memoir Amazon: Empires Collection - The Dynasties - Egypt's Golden Empire / **The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance / Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire / The Roman Empire in the First Century / The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization) - Empires Collection: By www.amazon.com Published On :: Egypt's Golden Empire: In 1570 B.C., when Rome was still a marsh and the Acropolis was an empty rock, Egypt was already 1000 years old. Although the period of the pyramid-builders was long over, Egypt lay on the threshold of its greatest age. The New Kingdom would be an empire forged by conquest, maintained by intimidation and diplomacy, and remembered long after its demise. Led by a dynasty of rich personalities, whose dramatic lives changed the course of civilization, Egypt's Golden Empire presents the most extraordinary period in Egyptian history: from 1570 B.C. to 1070 B.C., when the Egyptian Empire reached its zenith. -- The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance - From a small Italian community in 15th century Florence, the Medici family would rise to rule Europe in many ways. Using charm, patronage, skill, duplicity and ruthlessness, they would amass unparalleled wealth and unprecedented power. They would also ignite the most important cultural and artistic revolution in Western history- the European Renaissance. But the forces of change the Medici helped unleash would one day topple their ordered world. An epic drama played out in the courts, cathedrals and palaces of Europe, this series is both the tale of one family's powerful ambition and of Europe's tortured struggle to emerge from the ravages of the Dark Ages. -- Japan: Memoirs Of A Secret Empire - Commanding shoguns and samurai warriors, exotic geisha and exquisite artisans -- all were part of the Japanese "renaissance" -- a period between the 16th and 19th centuries when Japan went from chaos and violence to a land of ritual refinement and peace. But stability came at a price: for nearly 250 years, Japan was a land closed to the Western world, ruled by the Shogun under his absolute power and control. Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire brings to life the unknown story of a mysterious empire, its relationship to the West, and the forging of a nation that would emerge as one of the most important countries in the world. -- The Roman Empire in the First Century: Two thousand years ago, at the dawn of the first century, the ancient world was ruled by Rome. Through the experiences, memories and writings of the people who lived it, this series tells the story of that time - the emperors and slaves, poets and plebeians, who wrested order from chaos, built the most cosmopolitan society the world had ever seen and shaped the Roman empire in the first century A.D. -- The Greeks: Crucible [melting pot] of Civilization - The Greeks - Classical Greece of the 4th and 5th centuries, B.C. was a magnificent civilization that laid the foundations for modern science, politics, warfare, and philosophy, and produced some of the most breathtaking art and architecture the world has ever known. Through the eyes and words of the great heroes of ancient Greece, this dazzling production charts the rise, triumph, and eventual decline of the world's first democracy. Now, through dramatic storytelling and state-of-the-art computer animation, you witness history, art, and government with giants like Pericles, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. memoir Drifter's Memoirs - Amsterdam, Holland By driftersmemoirs.blogspot.com Published On :: Thu, 30 Jun 2005 21:46:00 -0700 Tags: travel memoirs picturesEuropehumorlifeHollandMilitarystoriesNetherlandsCan you believe I found myself in Amsterdam, Holland at the age of 20 years old in 1982? Who would have ever thought that the girl from Richmond, California would find herself in Holland? This was a big time party place. At times, Holland was a little frightening. Thank goodness we always were in a group of six or more people whenever we traveled abroad. We went to a place called the Flora Palace and danced like we had lost our minds. This is one place we had to be very careful. Drugs were legal and used in public places. Can you imagine dancing in a night club and finding yourself around drugs? This wasn't cool. We ran out of a night club when we discovered that there were drugs around us. You won't believe what type of club we ended up in that evening. For the first time in Europe, we heard Reggae music coming out of this spectacular night club. We walked in and discovered that it was a Rastafarian Night Club. Would you believe that this was the one club where we didn't see or smell drugs? The people were extremely friendly and gave us free drinks when they found out we were Americans. We danced to Reggae music until almost daylight. We had a ball. The next day, we took the traditional trip on our tour bus to downtown Amsterdam. We saw the Red Light District and visited every shop we could find.We stopped by one store and everything in it was red and black. Black pants, red pants, black tops, red tops, you get the message. The store next door only had black and white clothes. We so much fun and we all left looking like the bopsie twins. Madonna was really big during this time (1982) and everything we bought was made out of lace.Holland was a beautiful place. The canals and tulips is what I enjoyed the most. For some reason, I can't remember all of the attractions I saw there. Too much time has passed and we were only there for a short period of time. The below pictures will give you an idea of the type of sights I saw while I was there. memoir Drifter's Memoirs' New Turn - The Art Lover Remembers Paris France By driftersmemoirs.blogspot.com Published On :: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 21:58:00 -0700 Drifter's Memoirs is buying in on the idea of being able to display additional art for our art lovers in a bigger way. As you probably can tell, I love art and the creative aspects of it.When I was assigned in Alaska, I started purchasing numbered prints. Well today, may have been a new turn for me. I may be able to make a difference in artists' lives. When I went to Paris, France, there was a place that I went to that had a lot of stairs and it was where all of the artists painted and sketched. I think it was called the Student's orArtists' Square or something like that. Folks, I was 19 when I was in Paris and I'm Forty..... (cough) (cough)...uhhh something now lol. So please help me remember the name of the place I went that's well known to artists.Forex Enterprise One thing was to see the Mona Lisa and how her features are so captivating. I remember staring at her and saying to myself, "So this is the painting everyone admired for thousands of years." To be honest, I never thought that a small town person like me would end up in front of the Mona Lisa at the age of 19 years old. I had known a young man for 45 days that wanted to get married. He had already had orders to go back to the states. There was one thing he promised before he went on leave."I promise to take you to Paris for New Years." Can you imagine that?? Well, we went and I had a wonderful time. He was really a great guy, I was just too young to get married....ok...I trailed off again...I do that when I speak of Europe. I loved it there. Europe gave me an appreciation for museums, art, culture, cathedrals, and castles. Did I forget wine? lolThe Louvre Museum in Paris is where you'll find the Mona Lisa and the artist is Leonardo Di Vinci. What an awesome artist. He had a way of playing jokes on people through his paintings he was commissioned for paint for them. Some say Leornado Di Vinci painted himself as a woman. Some say the painting is an androgynous depiction of him. They also say that the only way he could have painted the picture was by looking at himself in the mirror while painting. (This wouldn't be any different than how Freida painted herself when you think about it). This wasn't revealed to me until I read "The Di Vinci Code". Wow, now that was an awesome book!HurryDateThere are many fascinating stories about the Knights of Templar and the ....wow...I can go on and on about this. To sum it up, life is under a Law of Balance (some say the Law of Opposites) and each opposite polar energy has to exist simultaneously with the other. (Next I'll start saying a mantra and wear the Yin Yang symbol around my neck....I do like those you know). This is part of the reason why I believe Leonardo Di Vinci depicted Mona Lisa the way he did. He was a brillant man and understood felt the Laws of Nature on a deeper level. A man before his time and a very cunning man in his art. His pictures speak a different message than what's on the surface. He seemed to always have hidden messages in his paintings. Then again, this is just me rambling, yet the Egyptians and the Art of Tantra believe in the Laws of Nature and it's opposites. Uh oh, guess I'm really getting deep here. Guess I have too much time on my hands lol. Soooo, how's football? I sure love those Niners and Raiders lol. Pass the chips and dip lol.Eat. Drink. Save!I'll keep you posted on the art developments and trust me, I'm going to share every juicy detail as it occurs. I'm sure any art lover will feel pleased.Johnetta MatthewsDrifter's MemoirsMy Secret Hiding PlaceThe Art Lover@------------>--------Travel Secrets Tags: travel memoirs FranceEurope humor life paintingsartists stories art loversmetaphysics Full Article
memoir Travel Memoirs? Cocktail Dresses? What's Next? By driftersmemoirs.blogspot.com Published On :: Sat, 17 Dec 2005 22:13:00 -0800 Hi Everyone,Blogging is so much fun. At times we can run across very ruthless people on here. One of the blogs I had to be changed from a blogspot blog to a dot com blog. This was not because of Blogger. Blogger has supported us above reproach and I'm a true Blogger fan. It's just when you have a good thing, you have to protect it. Our new web site address for Glamour and Cocktail Dresses is www.cocktaildressandheels.com . So if you want to continue looking for cocktail dresses and evening dresses with us, please go to the above address.Someone may ask, how in the heck did I go from Travel Memoirs to Cocktail Dresses? It's very simple. When you travel, you want to look good. When people go on a cruise, there's normally parties and formal nights.Men wear tuxes or suits and the women wear formals. It's really amazing how one travel experience can revamp a person's wardrobe.I recall taking a trip to Hawaii (while stationed in Alaska). I wanted a few nice outfits, dresses and new high heels. What did I do? I went on a shopping spree and begged a girlfriend for a few of her outfits. The next post, I'll tell you about my trip to Hawaii! Remember, I was stationed in Alaska and it was around 20 degrees and when I landed in Hawaii, it was 88 degrees lol. What a contrast.Take care and have a great holiday season.Drifters MemoirsTravel Banter BlogCocktail Dresses and Heels@---------->-------------Tags: travel memoirs humor cocktail dresses Full Article

memoir After Woody Allen's Memoir Was Signed, Book Publisher's Employees Walk Out By feeds.scpr.org Published On :: Thu, 05 Mar 2020 19:00:15 -0800 Hachette Book Group employees in New York City, during a Thursday walkout protesting their company's decision to publish Woody Allen's memoir.; Credit: Kendra Barkoff Lamy/Twitter Anastasia Tsioulcas | NPROn Thursday afternoon, dozens of employees of the publishing imprints Grand Central Publishing and Little, Brown staged a walkout to protest Grand Central's decision to publish Woody Allen's memoir, Apropos of Nothing, next month. Both imprints are owned by Hachette Book Group (HBG), the same house that published journalist Ronan Farrow's Catch and Kill. The walkout comes after Farrow announced on Tuesday that he felt he could no longer work with HBG after the Allen acquisition. Farrow is Allen's son with actress Mia Farrow; his sister, Dylan Farrow, has accused Allen of having sexually abused her as a child. Allen has long denied her allegations. In his statement, Farrow wrote in part that HBG "concealed the decision from me and its own employees while we were working on Catch and Kill — a book about how powerful men, including Woody Allen, avoid accountability for sexual abuse." Dylan Farrow also released a statement on Monday evening, in which she said in part: "Hachette's publishing of Woody Allen's memoir is deeply upsetting to me personally and an utter betrayal of my brother whose brave reporting, capitalized on by Hachette, gave voice to numerous survivors of sexual assault by powerful men. ... This provides yet another example of the profound privilege that power, money and notoriety affords. Hachette's complicity in this should be called out for what it is and they should have to answer for it." Employees at both HBG's New York and Boston offices participated in the Thursday walkout. Many also sent out an auto-reply email that read in part: "We stand in solidarity with Ronan Farrow, Dylan Farrow and survivors of sexual assault." Those include Little, Brown executive editor Vanessa Mobley, who was the editor of Catch and Kill. In a statement sent to NPR Thursday afternoon, HBG CEO Michael Pietsch said: "We respect and understand the perspective of our employees who have decided to express their concern over the publication of this book. We will engage our staff in a fuller discussion about this at the earliest opportunity." NPR reached out for comment to Allen's agent, who did not respond as of publication time. The New York Post reported that HBG employees approached the company's human resources department on Thursday afternoon to complain about the planned publication of Allen's book. A Hachette employee told NPR that HBG's CEO, Michael Pietch, attempted to hold a town hall meeting on Thursday to discuss the issue, but the employees walked out before the meeting was held. Farrow's agent, Lynn Nesbit, told NPR on Thursday, "I feel moved almost to tears by the walkout. It was such a brave gesture to management who, in my opinion, made such a misguided decision." Signing Allen, she said, was "a betrayal of Ronan, of the women in his book, of the issues in the book and of the staff of this publisher." She added that Farrow is "grateful for the support of his colleagues at Little, Brown." Last year, The New York Times reported that Allen had tried to sell the memoir to several major publishing houses, "only to be met with indifference or hard passes"; one source told NPR on Thursday afternoon that the title had been considered "radioactive" in the publishing world. Farrow also said in his Tuesday statement that HBG had not fact-checked Allen's memoir, nor did it contact Dylan Farrow for any response. "It also shows a lack of ethics and compassion for victims of sexual abuse, regardless of any personal connection or breach of trust here. ... I've also told Hachette that a publisher that would conduct itself in this way is one I can't work with in good conscience." Copyright 2020 NPR. To see more, visit https://www.npr.org.
