interfaces The Spiral Project Handbook: Effective interfaces between science, policy and society By www.eubon.eu Published On :: Thu, 24 Jul 2014 13:40:00 +0300 The Spiral Project Handbook: Effective interfaces between science, policy and society was developed as part of the SPIRAL project. SPIRAL is an interdisciplinary research project that studies science-policy interfaces between biodiversity research and policy to draw lessons and improve the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. This handbook provides a manual for projects and individuals interested in designing or improving interfaces between science, policy and society. It is challenging – but important – to establish appropriate connections between the diverse insights and perspectives of scientists and other knowledge holders, and the needs and interests of decision-takers, implementers and other knowledge users. These connections and interactions are the "science-policy interface" (SPI). Designing and improving SPIs of EU-funded research projects is the aim of this handbook. The handbook is structured around five main issues. It starts with a brief introduction to what SPIs are, and what they are not. Then moves on to the issue of why SPIs are needed before looking at certain important attributes of SPIs, namely credibility, relevance, legitimacy and iterativity. In the next part of the handbook, some steps and recommendations for designing, maintaining and improving the SPIs of EUfunded research projects are outlined. As part of this some factors facilitating successful SPIs are discussed. SPIRAL was funded under the EU 7th Framework Programme, contract number 244035. interfaces Unlocking the surface chemistry of ionic minerals: a high-throughput pipeline for modeling realistic interfaces By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-03-15 A systematic procedure is introduced for modeling charge-neutral non-polar surfaces of ionic minerals containing polyatomic anions. By integrating distance- and charge-based clustering to identify chemical species within the mineral bulk, our pipeline, PolyCleaver, renders a variety of theoretically viable surface terminations. As a demonstrative example, this approach was applied to forsterite (Mg2SiO4), unveiling a rich interface landscape based on interactions with formaldehyde, a relevant multifaceted molecule, and more particularly in prebiotic chemistry. This high-throughput method, going beyond techniques traditionally applied in the modeling of minerals, offers new insights into the potential catalytic properties of diverse surfaces, enabling a broader exploration of synthetic pathways in complex mineral systems. interfaces A Gamer's Desktop Platform Designed for Swappable User Interfaces By www.core77.com Published On :: To me, the gaming market is a lot like the EDC market: It's fascinating to see what developmental lengths people will go to, to push the UX of some object with highly specific functions. A case in point is this Elitech Protean Space Quick Control Swap Gaming System. The idea behind it, is that gamers have multiple task-dependent UI's on their desks: A keyboard for typing, a joystick and throttle for playing flight simulators, a steering wheel and a shifter for driving games. For gaming accuracy these need to be mounted, and juggling the mounts is apparently a hassle. So what this design does is, provide a modular platform on which to securely attach different controllers. The heart of the system is this keyboard base, with two wings. The keyboard base slides rearwards, revealing aluminum channels. The wing pieces can be slid towards each other along these channels, adjusted to your preferred width. The "X" in the top of the wings is stainless steel. This allows you to attach magnetic controllers.Furthermore, there are clamping attachments that allow you to attach a steering wheel and shifter. Thus the gamer can quickly achieve the set-up that they want: This isn't yet in production; the developer is planning a crowdfunding campaign. interfaces Intent-driven User Interfaces By www.lukew.com Published On :: Fri, 09 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0000 Increasingly when I see designers defaulting to more Ul controls and form elements in software interface designs, I encourage them to consider the implications of intent-driven instructions. Here's why... For years l've used this image of Adobe Illustrator's user interface evolution to highlight the continuous march of "more features, more Ul" that drives nearly every software company's releases. The end result for end users is more functions they don't know about and don't use. Not great. So what's the alternative? Perhaps something like Christian Cantrell's Photoshop assistant demos. In this series of videos, Christian uses natural language instructions connected to Photoshop's APIs to do things like mask the subject of a series of photos, blur the background in images, create layers and more. All without needing to know how and without clicking a bunch of windows, icons, menus, and pointers (WIMP). Intent-driven instructions to mask the subject of multiple images in Photoshop: Intent-driven instructions to mask the blur the backgrounds of multiple images in Photoshop: Intent-driven instructions to create layers and objects in Photoshop: While these kinds of interactions won't immediately replace conventional graphical user interface controls, it's pretty clear they enable a new way of control software with hundreds of features... just tell it what you want to do. interfaces Development of a scanning soft X-ray spectromicroscope to investigate local electronic structures on surfaces and interfaces of advanced materials under conditions ranging from low vacuum to helium atmosphere By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-03-18 A scanning soft X-ray spectromicroscope was recently developed based mainly on the photon-in/photon-out measurement scheme for the investigation of local electronic structures on the surfaces and interfaces of advanced materials under conditions ranging from low vacuum to helium atmosphere. The apparatus was installed at the soft X-ray beamline (BL17SU) at SPring-8. The characteristic features of the apparatus are described in detail. The feasibility of this spectromicroscope was demonstrated using soft X-ray undulator radiation. Here, based on these results, element-specific two-dimensional mapping and micro-XAFS (X-ray absorption fine structure) measurements are reported, as well as the observation of magnetic domain structures from using a reference sample of permalloy micro-dot patterns fabricated on a silicon substrate, with modest spatial resolution (e.g. ∼500 nm). Then, the X-ray radiation dose for Nafion® near the fluorine K-edge is discussed as a typical example of material that is not radiation hardened against a focused X-ray beam, for near future experiments. interfaces Transfer Learning for EEG-Based Brain-Computer Interfaces: A Review of Progress Made Since 2016. (arXiv:2004.06286v3 [cs.HC] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: A brain-computer interface (BCI) enables a user to communicate with a computer directly using brain signals. Electroencephalograms (EEGs) used in BCIs are weak, easily contaminated by interference and noise, non-stationary for the same subject, and varying across different subjects and sessions. Therefore, it is difficult to build a generic pattern recognition model in an EEG-based BCI system that is optimal for different subjects, during different sessions, for different devices and tasks. Usually, a calibration session is needed to collect some training data for a new subject, which is time consuming and user unfriendly. Transfer learning (TL), which utilizes data or knowledge from similar or relevant subjects/sessions/devices/tasks to facilitate learning for a new subject/session/device/task, is frequently used to reduce the amount of calibration effort. This paper reviews journal publications on TL approaches in EEG-based BCIs in the last few years, i.e., since 2016. Six paradigms and applications -- motor imagery, event-related potentials, steady-state visual evoked potentials, affective BCIs, regression problems, and adversarial attacks -- are considered. For each paradigm/application, we group the TL approaches into cross-subject/session, cross-device, and cross-task settings and review them separately. Observations and conclusions are made at the end of the paper, which may point to future research directions. Full Article

interfaces Interfaces for digital media processing By www.freepatentsonline.com Published On :: Tue, 26 May 2015 08:00:00 EDT APIs discussed herein promote efficient and timely interoperability between hardware and software components within the media processing pipelines of media content players. A PhysMemDataStructure API facilitates a hardware component's direct access to information within a memory used by a software component, to enable the hardware component to use direct memory access techniques to obtain the contents of the memory, instead of using processor cycles to execute copy commands. The PhysMemDataStructure API exposes one or more fields of data structures associated with units of media content stored in a memory used by a software component, and the exposed fields store information about the physical properties of the memory locations of the units of media content. SyncHelper APIs are used for obtaining information from, and passing information to, hardware components, which information is used to adjust the hardware components' timing for preparing media samples of synchronously-presentable media content streams.
