Rangeland exclosures of northeastern Oregon: stories they tell (1936-2004)

Rangeland exclosures installed primarily in the 1960s, but with some from the 1940s, were resampled for changes in plant community structure and composition periodically from 1977 to 2004 on the Malheur, Umatilla, and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests in northeastern Oregon. They allow one to compare vegetation with all-ungulate exclusion (known historically as game exclosures), all-livestock exclusion (known historically as stock exclosures), and with no exclusion (known as open areas). Thirteen upland rangeland exclosures in northeastern Oregon were selected and are presented with plant community trend data and possible causes of changes over time. Key findings are that moderate grazing by native ungulates afforded by the livestock exclosures generally stimulated bunchgrasses to retain dominance and vitality; native bunchgrasses can replace invasive rhizomatous plants given a reduction in disturbance over time; shrubs increased without ungulate use in shrubland communities; and invasive annuals that established following severe disturbances to the grassland community diminished with aggressive competition from perennial bunchgrasses.

Triangles in graphs without bipartite suspensions. (arXiv:2004.11930v2 [math.CO] UPDATED)

Given graphs $T$ and $H$, the generalized Tur'an number ex$(n,T,H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex graph with no copies of $H$. Alon and Shikhelman, using a result of ErdH os, determined the asymptotics of ex$(n,K_3,H)$ when the chromatic number of $H$ is greater than 3 and proved several results when $H$ is bipartite. We consider this problem when $H$ has chromatic number 3. Even this special case for the following relatively simple 3-chromatic graphs appears to be challenging.

The suspension $widehat H$ of a graph $H$ is the graph obtained from $H$ by adding a new vertex adjacent to all vertices of $H$. We give new upper and lower bounds on ex$(n,K_3,widehat{H})$ when $H$ is a path, even cycle, or complete bipartite graph. One of the main tools we use is the triangle removal lemma, but it is unclear if much stronger statements can be proved without using the removal lemma.

Grothendieck's inequalities for JB$^*$-triples: Proof of the Barton-Friedman conjecture. (arXiv:1903.08931v3 [math.OA] UPDATED)

We prove that, given a constant $K> 2$ and a bounded linear operator $T$ from a JB$^*$-triple $E$ into a complex Hilbert space $H$, there exists a norm-one functional $psiin E^*$ satisfying $$|T(x)| leq K , |T| , |x|_{psi},$$ for all $xin E$. Applying this result we show that, given $G > 8 (1+2sqrt{3})$ and a bounded bilinear form $V$ on the Cartesian product of two JB$^*$-triples $E$ and $B$, there exist norm-one functionals $varphiin E^{*}$ and $psiin B^{*}$ satisfying $$|V(x,y)| leq G |V| , |x|_{varphi} , |y|_{psi}$$ for all $(x,y)in E imes B$. These results prove a conjecture pursued during almost twenty years.

The 2d-directed spanning forest converges to the Brownian web. (arXiv:1805.09399v3 [math.PR] UPDATED)

The two-dimensional directed spanning forest (DSF) introduced by Baccelli and Bordenave is a planar directed forest whose vertex set is given by a homogeneous Poisson point process $mathcal{N}$ on $mathbb{R}^2$. If the DSF has direction $-e_y$, the ancestor $h(u)$ of a vertex $u in mathcal{N}$ is the nearest Poisson point (in the $L_2$ distance) having strictly larger $y$-coordinate. This construction induces complex geometrical dependencies. In this paper we show that the collection of DSF paths, properly scaled, converges in distribution to the Brownian web (BW). This verifies a conjecture made by Baccelli and Bordenave in 2007.

GraCIAS: Grassmannian of Corrupted Images for Adversarial Security. (arXiv:2005.02936v2 [cs.CV] UPDATED)

Input transformation based defense strategies fall short in defending against strong adversarial attacks. Some successful defenses adopt approaches that either increase the randomness within the applied transformations, or make the defense computationally intensive, making it substantially more challenging for the attacker. However, it limits the applicability of such defenses as a pre-processing step, similar to computationally heavy approaches that use retraining and network modifications to achieve robustness to perturbations. In this work, we propose a defense strategy that applies random image corruptions to the input image alone, constructs a self-correlation based subspace followed by a projection operation to suppress the adversarial perturbation. Due to its simplicity, the proposed defense is computationally efficient as compared to the state-of-the-art, and yet can withstand huge perturbations. Further, we develop proximity relationships between the projection operator of a clean image and of its adversarially perturbed version, via bounds relating geodesic distance on the Grassmannian to matrix Frobenius norms. We empirically show that our strategy is complementary to other weak defenses like JPEG compression and can be seamlessly integrated with them to create a stronger defense. We present extensive experiments on the ImageNet dataset across four different models namely InceptionV3, ResNet50, VGG16 and MobileNet models with perturbation magnitude set to {epsilon} = 16. Unlike state-of-the-art approaches, even without any retraining, the proposed strategy achieves an absolute improvement of ~ 4.5% in defense accuracy on ImageNet.

Generative Adversarial Networks in Digital Pathology: A Survey on Trends and Future Potential. (arXiv:2004.14936v2 [eess.IV] UPDATED)

Image analysis in the field of digital pathology has recently gained increased popularity. The use of high-quality whole slide scanners enables the fast acquisition of large amounts of image data, showing extensive context and microscopic detail at the same time. Simultaneously, novel machine learning algorithms have boosted the performance of image analysis approaches. In this paper, we focus on a particularly powerful class of architectures, called Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), applied to histological image data. Besides improving performance, GANs also enable application scenarios in this field, which were previously intractable. However, GANs could exhibit a potential for introducing bias. Hereby, we summarize the recent state-of-the-art developments in a generalizing notation, present the main applications of GANs and give an outlook of some chosen promising approaches and their possible future applications. In addition, we identify currently unavailable methods with potential for future applications.

SilhoNet: An RGB Method for 6D Object Pose Estimation. (arXiv:1809.06893v4 [cs.CV] UPDATED)

Autonomous robot manipulation involves estimating the translation and orientation of the object to be manipulated as a 6-degree-of-freedom (6D) pose. Methods using RGB-D data have shown great success in solving this problem. However, there are situations where cost constraints or the working environment may limit the use of RGB-D sensors. When limited to monocular camera data only, the problem of object pose estimation is very challenging. In this work, we introduce a novel method called SilhoNet that predicts 6D object pose from monocular images. We use a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) pipeline that takes in Region of Interest (ROI) proposals to simultaneously predict an intermediate silhouette representation for objects with an associated occlusion mask and a 3D translation vector. The 3D orientation is then regressed from the predicted silhouettes. We show that our method achieves better overall performance on the YCB-Video dataset than two state-of-the art networks for 6D pose estimation from monocular image input.

A Tale of Two Perplexities: Sensitivity of Neural Language Models to Lexical Retrieval Deficits in Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type. (arXiv:2005.03593v1 [cs.CL])

In recent years there has been a burgeoning interest in the use of computational methods to distinguish between elicited speech samples produced by patients with dementia, and those from healthy controls. The difference between perplexity estimates from two neural language models (LMs) - one trained on transcripts of speech produced by healthy participants and the other trained on transcripts from patients with dementia - as a single feature for diagnostic classification of unseen transcripts has been shown to produce state-of-the-art performance. However, little is known about why this approach is effective, and on account of the lack of case/control matching in the most widely-used evaluation set of transcripts (DementiaBank), it is unclear if these approaches are truly diagnostic, or are sensitive to other variables. In this paper, we interrogate neural LMs trained on participants with and without dementia using synthetic narratives previously developed to simulate progressive semantic dementia by manipulating lexical frequency. We find that perplexity of neural LMs is strongly and differentially associated with lexical frequency, and that a mixture model resulting from interpolating control and dementia LMs improves upon the current state-of-the-art for models trained on transcript text exclusively.

Does Multi-Encoder Help? A Case Study on Context-Aware Neural Machine Translation. (arXiv:2005.03393v1 [cs.CL])

In encoder-decoder neural models, multiple encoders are in general used to represent the contextual information in addition to the individual sentence. In this paper, we investigate multi-encoder approaches in documentlevel neural machine translation (NMT). Surprisingly, we find that the context encoder does not only encode the surrounding sentences but also behaves as a noise generator. This makes us rethink the real benefits of multi-encoder in context-aware translation - some of the improvements come from robust training. We compare several methods that introduce noise and/or well-tuned dropout setup into the training of these encoders. Experimental results show that noisy training plays an important role in multi-encoder-based NMT, especially when the training data is small. Also, we establish a new state-of-the-art on IWSLT Fr-En task by careful use of noise generation and dropout methods.

Deep Learning based Person Re-identification. (arXiv:2005.03293v1 [cs.CV])

Automated person re-identification in a multi-camera surveillance setup is very important for effective tracking and monitoring crowd movement. In the recent years, few deep learning based re-identification approaches have been developed which are quite accurate but time-intensive, and hence not very suitable for practical purposes. In this paper, we propose an efficient hierarchical re-identification approach in which color histogram based comparison is first employed to find the closest matches in the gallery set, and next deep feature based comparison is carried out using Siamese network. Reduction in search space after the first level of matching helps in achieving a fast response time as well as improving the accuracy of prediction by the Siamese network by eliminating vastly dissimilar elements. A silhouette part-based feature extraction scheme is adopted in each level of hierarchy to preserve the relative locations of the different body structures and make the appearance descriptors more discriminating in nature. The proposed approach has been evaluated on five public data sets and also a new data set captured by our team in our laboratory. Results reveal that it outperforms most state-of-the-art approaches in terms of overall accuracy.

Distributed Stabilization by Probability Control for Deterministic-Stochastic Large Scale Systems : Dissipativity Approach. (arXiv:2005.03193v1 [eess.SY])

By using dissipativity approach, we establish the stability condition for the feedback connection of a deterministic dynamical system $Sigma$ and a stochastic memoryless map $Psi$. After that, we extend the result to the class of large scale systems in which: $Sigma$ consists of many sub-systems; and $Psi$ consists of many "stochastic actuators" and "probability controllers" that control the actuator's output events. We will demonstrate the proposed approach by showing the design procedures to globally stabilize the manufacturing systems while locally balance the stock levels in any production process.

We speak to the rapping team at the head of the powerful rap/rock group ¡Mayday! – Ben “Wrekonize” Miller and Bernardo “Bernz” Garcia. Since the early 2000s, the band has been delivering powerful music to a growing legion of fans. That fan base was dramatically increased when the Miami group teamed up with Tech N9ne’s Strange Music label a few years ago. The most recent album released by the hardworking collective is a joint project with West Coast legend Murs called, appropriately enough, Mursday.

Wrek and Bernz talk about their career and songwriting process, but also find time to discuss their famous relatives, partying with Lil Wayne, and which group member is best with a slow cooker.

G Koop is your favorite producer’s secret weapon. In addition to being a successful beatmaker on his own for artists like Gift of Gab and Nelly, Koop has carved out a successful career as the go-to guy for sample replays. He can re-create nearly any song, from any era, and has done so for artists like Drake, Ice Cube, MF DOOM, Scarface, and countless others.

Lately, he has taken that one step further, and begun creating his own compositions for other producers to sample. That music has been the basis for songs by Future, 21 Savage, 2 Chainz. and even Migos’ recent number one smash hit “Bad and Boujee.”

SWEDISH RISING STAR NÁPOLES UNVEILS NEW SINGLE ‘CIRCULATE’

CHAMPIONED BY BBC 1XTRA, RINSE FM, SPOTIFY, KINGSIZE MAGAZINE, DSTNGR

STREAM ‘CIRCULATE’ HERE: https://open.spotify.com/album/06XeOLQyZ8FSRTjtqgcw05

Coming on the back of the success of her debut single ‘Slowzy’, which has been garnering support from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, Rinse FM, Spotify, DSTNGR, Kingsize Magazine, and PUMA, among others, fast-rising Swedish songstress and creative NÁPOLES is excited to release her brand new single titled ‘CIRCULATE’, serving as the second offering from her forthcoming debut EP Slowin It, which is due for release later this summer.

Raised in Stockholm, with Cuban and Russian heritage, Nápoles has always been surrounded by music, but her love affair with music started at the very young age of 8, after her first family visit to Cuba. She grew up on hip-hop, house, dancehall and gospel music, whether it was as a young street- style dancer, or as a 15-year old singer in youth choirs such as Joyful Noise and the Tensta Gospel Choir, which helped her develop her own musical language.

Fast-forward to 2020, and alongside her blossoming music career, Nápoles is also one-third of the popular Swedish-based DJ and creative collective Ladieslovehiphop, with whom she has opened for Beyonce and Jay-Z on their ‘On The Run II’ European tour, collaborated with adidas and PUMA, toured with Sweden’s biggest female rapper Silvana Imam, and collaborated with Red Bull Music to host the Ladieslovehiphop Music Festival, among other accomplishments.

Her new single ‘Circulate’ is produced by fellow Swedish creatives Chapee and Wihib Sulaiman, and co-written by herself and Joe Lefty, and the track sees Nápoles excellently weaving her laidback musical stylings, enchanting vocals, and captivatingly vivid songwriting, together with her lush soul, hip- hop, R&B and jazz sensibilities, to create an undeniably smooth and infectious offering, making the Swedish rising star two for two on homeruns in 2020.

For the ‘Circulate’ visuals, Nápoles has collaborated with fellow Ladieslovehiphop member Namarijana, video director Gustav Andersson, and cinematographer Daniel Edin, to capture a portrait of a night out with Nápoles. The visuals showcase the vibrant energy of a Ladieslovehiphop evening, underpinned by laughter, love and community. Shot in Stockholm, where Nápoles is currently based, the sensual and lively visuals showcase the transcendent feel-good energy and essence, not only of the track, but also of her Ladieslovehiphop movement.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Circulate’, Nápoles says, “the inspiration comes from my everyday life. I wrote ‘Circulate’ at a time when I was thinking about the universe, space and how everything is connected. At night, I would watch ‘Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey’ and read books of that nature, and during the day at work, I would daydream a lot about these themes. I was also figuring myself out as an artist, and the exploration of my sound, combined with all these thoughts, led to the making of ‘Circulate’. I want my music to be fun, smooth and energetic at the same time, and I think that comes across on this song”.

ZÁDOR, E.: Sinfonia Technica / Music for Clarinet and Strings / Trombone Concerto (Sólyomi, Fejér, Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV, Smolij) (8.574108)

The music of Eugene Zádor is both warmly expressive and colourful. The composer took great delight in writing for overlooked solo instruments, as his Trombone Concerto, garnished with elements of Hungarian folklore, clearly shows. The easy-going, gypsy-influenced Music for Clarinet and Strings is a beautifully proportioned quasi-concerto. The Sinfonia Technica, composed much earlier when he was living in Vienna, and something of a one-off, is an enchanting and exuberantly orchestrated example of ‘industrial music’.

Both Scarbo and Los requiebros are pillars of the piano repertoire, brimming with expressive and technical challenges for any performer, as is Carl Vine’s beautifully written but rarely heard Piano Sonata No. 1. Sánchez-Verdú’s Jardín de espejos (‘Garden of Mirrors’) is influenced by the multiple layers in Islamic art, the ‘mirrors’ of the title lending shape to a tradition of listening, silence and echoes. The programme concludes with Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major, an outstanding work in the chamber-music literature.

The distinguished Spanish composer and pianist Sira Hernández is known especially for her involvement with multi-discipline arts projects at major international festivals and cultural events. Many of her works are inspired by Italian artists as can be heard on this album. Minimalist techniques and the significance of tonality and timbre in communicating darkness and light are heard in Iniciación a la sombra and the sewing-machine ostinatos of Fantasía para piano. The presence of God amidst the bleak spaces of madness are expressed in Terra Santa, and the intensity of Don’t Forget About That invites us to resist oblivion.

HARSÁNYI, T.: Piano Works (Complete), Vol. 2 (Koukl) (GP807)

The Hungarian-born composer Tibor Harsányi is now recognised as an important personality in ‘L’École de Paris’. He had a lifelong interest in modern dance, represented here by the Petite suite and Trois Pièces de danse, and he also embraced jazz, which was part of the Parisian atmosphere of the inter-war period, and other influences, while keeping the Central European rhythms and tonalities of his Hungarian origins. The Trois Pièces lyriques is a rare example of Harsányi expressing torment during the turbulent years of the Second World War.
