About our group and our work The Arm Research Security Group works to "develop technology worthy of the trust that we place in it." We are not a "red team" identifying and publishing vulnerabilities in systems or suggesting point-fixes, but rather we seek to develop techniques and tools that eliminate large classes of vulnerabilities outright. To do this, we have projects broadly focussed on three research areas: Security. How can we implement systems that remain secure even in the face of well-organised and extraordinarily imaginative adversaries? In this area we are looking at, for example, designing "responsive hardware" that can spot and react to early signs of security threats. We are also looking into how an emerging set of post-quantum ciphers can be efficiently implemented on power-constrained Arm microcontrollers. Correctness. Can hardware and software systems be designed so that they are correct by construction? And what does "correct" even mean? We are currently trying to establish provable security properties for future extensions of the Arm architecture, and we recently started a collaboration with academics who are applying mathematical techniques to spot Spectre-like bugs in hardware designs. Privacy. How can emerging technologies increase the privacy of computations and data? We are investigating how trusted hardware and remote attestation protocols can be used to implement efficient secure-multiparty computations. We are collaborating with academic partners around the design and implementation of hardware acceleration for homomorphic encryption. Other ongoing projects look at using the high assurance seL4 Operating System to ensure security and privacy on untrustworthy Edge devices. Full Article

usa USA's super-duper hypersonic missile is big nothing compared to Russia's new weapons By english.pravda.ru Published On :: Thu, 30 Sep 2021 21:21:00 +0300 Guided hypersonic weapons have given Russia absolute leadership in the field of the development of strategic weapons. No other country in the world, save for, possibly, China, has hypersonic missiles in service. Military analysts do not have any reliable data about China's new weapons. Russia has at least three types of missiles capable of causing irreparable damage to any potential aggressor.Reference: Avangard hypersonic system is capable of developing the speed of up to Mach 28. The system currently uses the Stilett silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile as a carrier. In the future, the new prospective intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat is to be used for the purpose. For the time being, Russia has four such systems on alert. A missile like that is capable of flying from Saratov to New York in 18 minutes. The H-47M2 missile of the Kinzhal (Dagger) complex develops a speed of 12,250 km/h, has a combat range of 3,000 kilometers. Its carrier is the MiG 31K high-altitude fighter-interceptor aircraft. To date, Russia has made several hundreds of Kinzhal missiles. The Zircon is the anti-ship missile. It accelerates to Mach 8. Currently, one Russian warship can carry up to 20 Zircon missiles. At the same time, according to open data, at least several hundred units of these missiles have been produced. During naval exercises held in the White Sea this year, the Admiral Gorshkov frigate launched the Zircon missile that successfully struck the target at a distance of over 350 km. As one can see, all types of Russian hypersonic missiles have already proven their combat effectiveness. At the same time, Russia does not stop here: Russian engineers already work on an air defense system to neutralize hypersonic weapons. usa USA can still crush Russia, but it can also save the world from chaos By english.pravda.ru Published On :: Thu, 29 Sep 2022 15:52:00 +0300 The United States has been losing its global hegemony. The non-western world is opposed to the concept of global hegemony. Everything will happen within the next decade, Western analysts predict. Nevertheless, the Americans still have a chance to achieve the world order that suits them, if they make certain concessions, Jorgen Erstroem Moeller, former State Secretary of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in an article for The National Interest. Moeller drew attention to Vladimir Putin's announcement of partial call-up of reservists, the referenda and saw a threat of the use of nuclear force. The situation is indeed very alarming, but the United States could now take the world out of chaos that was created by Russia and the United States. At the same time, chances for Washington to demonstrate common sense are slim as the US has contributed greatly to the current crisis as well. Full Article Opinion

usa USA wants to finally kill Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas project By english.pravda.ru Published On :: Tue, 20 Oct 2020 19:36:00 +0300 The US will expand sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. The sanctions will now affect companies that provide services or funding to install equipment on board the vessels that take part in the project. Such a move may permanently halt the construction of the pipeline. The news to expand the sanctions was reported on the website of the US Department of State. Similar restrictions are to be imposed on the participants of the Turkish Stream and other similar projects. The Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline provides for the construction of two sections of the gas pipeline system with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the coast of Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Originally, the construction of the pipeline system was supposed to be completed in 2019. However, the work on the project was suspended after US Congress passed a package of sanctions against the participants of the project. The USA remains opposed to the project, claiming that it makes Europe overly dependent on Russian natural gas and increases political pressure on Ukraine, which transits natural gas further to Europe. Kiev and several countries of the European Union share the same position. "Russia uses its energy export pipelines to create national and regional dependencies on Russian energy supplies, leveraging these dependencies to expand its political, economic, and military influence, weaken European security, and undermine U.S. national security and foreign policy interests. These pipelines also reduce European energy diversification, and hence weaken European energy security," the US State Department said in a statement. Russia, Germany, Austria and a number of other countries, whose companies are involved in the construction, insist that this is nothing but a business project. In late 2019, the United States imposed sanctions on Nord Stream-2, having demanded the companies involved in the construction should immediately stop their works on the project. Allseas, a Swiss company, pulled out of the project almost at once.Representatives of Russia's natural gas monopoly, Gazprom, stated that they would be able to complete the construction of Nord Stream-2 independently. For the time being, one needs to finish the construction of the section that is 100 kilometres long. On October 17, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in an interview with RND that the project would be completed. Full Article Business
usa Exploring differences between bankruptcy in Russia vs. USA By english.pravda.ru Published On :: Wed, 28 Oct 2020 14:29:00 +0300 Bankruptcy isn't a topic that anyone likes to discuss. Creditors, debtors, and government officials all get a little queasy at the thought of bankruptcy, but it exists for a reason. And in many situations, it can provide relief when financial friction is heightened. But bankruptcy isn't the same in every country. Laws, rules, and stigmas differ rather significantly - particularly between Russia and the United States. The what and why of bankruptcy Bankruptcy is one of the primary methods by which control over an asset can be transferred to more capable or efficient owners in the instance of market economies. Ultimately, bankruptcy serves three distinct purposes: To solve collective action problems among creditors as they deal with insolvent debtors. To give individual debtors a chance at a "fresh start" when they're overburdened by debt. To preserve/save the financial distress firms have by reorganizing rather than liquidating. Bankruptcy is basically government-sanctioned relief that allows individuals or businesses to have debts forgiven, granted they meet specific criteria and follow certain guidelines. It plays an important role in keeping the larger economic engine hitting on all cylinders. Without bankruptcy, millions of citizens would find themselves impoverished and unable to financially recover from dire situations. Full Article Business

usa USA gradually switches Ukraine to terrorist war against Russia By english.pravda.ru Published On :: Fri, 26 Apr 2024 20:24:00 +0300 US Congress will provide $61 billion in military aid to Ukraine. Will Joseph Biden decide to transfer long-range missiles to Kyiv? Does Washington prepare for a terrorist war against Russia? Pravda.Ru asked these and other questions to Alexander Dudchak, candidate of economic sciences, leading researcher at the Institute of CIS Countries. The US Congress approved $61 billion in aid to Ukraine, but this money will be distributed between Ukraine, the American military-industrial complex and allies in Europe for arms procurement. What do you think of the bill? The decision did not come as a surprise. Of course, the bulk of the amount will be spent to support the US defence industry. The Americans say that they need long-term contracts to support the defence industry, and Washington is getting them by supporting Kyiv and the hostilities in Ukraine. A lion's share of those billions will be spent to support the US defence industry in the first place. In addition, they will allocate money for the National Nuclear Safety Committee and the Ministry of Health. Full Article Incidents

usa Time-resolved AUSAXS at BL28XU at SPring-8 By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-02-01 An anomalous ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (AUSAXS) system has been constructed at BL28XU at SPring-8 for time-resolved AUSAXS experiments. The path length was extended to 9.1 m and a minimum of q = 0.0069 nm−1 was attained. Scattering profiles at 0.0069 to 0.3 nm−1 were successfully obtained at 17 different X-ray energies in 30 s using the BL28XU optical setup, which enables adjustment of the energy of the incident X-rays quickly without the beam position drifting. Time-resolved measurements were conducted to investigate changes in the structure of zinc compounds in poly(styrene-ran-butadiene) rubber during vulcanization. A change in energy dependence of the scattered intensity with time was found during vulcanization, suggesting the transformation of zinc in the reaction. Full Article text
usa 2021 Miss Nevada Will Be The First Openly Transgender Miss USA Contestant By www.scpr.org Published On :: Sat, 03 Jul 2021 07:00:04 -0700 Josie Fischels and Sarah McCammon | NPRWearing a rainbow sequin gown she designed herself in honor of Pride Month, Kataluna Enriquez made history last weekend when she was crowned Miss Nevada USA — the win will make her the first openly transgender contestant to compete in the upcoming Miss USA pageant this fall. "My win is our win," she posted afterward on her Instagram in a message to the LGBTQ community. "We just made history. Happy pride." Enriquez, who was also Miss Nevada USA's first trans contestant, beat out 21 other women for the top spot. She will represent the Silver State at the 2021 Miss USA pageant that will be held on Nov. 29 in Tulsa, Okla., where she will have a chance to be crowned Miss USA and advance to the Miss Universe pageant. If crowned Miss USA, Enriquez will become the second trans contestant to compete for Miss Universe, after Angela Ponce, who represented Spain in the 2018 Miss Universe pageant. The pageant began allowing transgender contestants in 2012. Enriquez began competing in pageants in 2015. Unable to afford custom designer gowns that fit her body at the time, she began designing her own to wear for competitions and eventually started her own line, Kataluna Kouture (@katalunakouture). In March, Enriquez became the first trans woman to win Miss Nevada's preliminary pageant, Miss Silver State USA. The journey has not been easy, and Enriquez has faced discrimination. While competing in a pageant outside of Nevada, she had not been given a roommate when pageant organizers learned she was trans. A doctor had also been sent to certify that she was a woman before she could continue. But Enriquez told NPR's Weekend All Things Considered that her determination to make history was what motivated her to keep competing. "I had a purpose and I had a dream," she said. "I wanted to compete on the Miss USA stage. When I was young, I always wanted to see someone on the Miss USA stage — someone like me. And it just happened to be that I was the person that I needed to make history." As she prepares for the Miss USA pageant, Enriquez said she plans to advocate for equality and mental health. "My win is not just a win for the trans community," she said. "It's a win for all women to be represented." Kalyani Saxena and Tinbete Ermyas produced and edited the audio version of this story.
