A research agenda for respite care. Deliberations of an expert panel of researchers, advocates and funders

ARCH, the National Respite Network and Resource Center in the United States of America identified that evidence-based research on respite care has, to large extent, been lacking. Across ages, needs and settings, respite is based upon the premise that providing caregivers periodic relief from daily, ongoing caregiving responsibilities will directly benefit them in terms of their physical health, immediate and long-term psychological health, and social-emotional relationships with family members. These benefits are assumed to result in secondary benefits for care receivers and even larger societal benefits in the form of cost benefits or improved employee productivity. Some research studies point to the merits of these assumptions. However, evidence-based research supporting this premise - or going beyond it to demonstrate how to best provide respite care that results in maximum benefits - has not been available. This report presents the findings of an expert panel composed of academics, researchers, service providers, advocates, policymakers and administrators representing a range of age groups, disabilities and professional disciplines. Over a period of 18 months the panel explored the current status of respite research, proposed strategies to overcome barriers to research, and developed a plan to encourage rigorous research in key areas.

Rethinking Respite for People Affected by Dementia

The ‘Dementia: More Than Just Memory Loss’ report, was published in 2016, and set out some of the key issues affecting people with dementia in Wales, in particular: • A widespread lack of knowledge and understanding of dementia amongst professionals and the wider public. • A lack of flexibility to effectively meet the needs of people living with dementia and their carers. • A lack of co-operation between services creates unnecessary difficulties and barriers for people living with dementia and their carers. The authors of the report called for a range of actions to address this, and there has been some progress, however, despite a range of changes across society at a policy, practice and community level, there is still a long way to go to transform services and drive the cultural change needed to effectively meet the needs of people affected by dementia.  The author of this report has consistently focused on the importance of meaningful outcomes for people with dementia and their carers, to ensure that their lives have value, meaning and purpose. This is fundamental to ‘Rethinking Respite’ and to delivering the Welsh Government’s vision of ‘a dementia friendly nation that recognises the rights of people with dementia to feel valued and to live as independently as possible in their communities as outlined in the new Dementia Action Plan for Wales.

Understanding and Responding to the Needs of Carers of People with Dementia in the UK, US and Beyond

This research compares the different approaches to supporting carers of people with dementia across the UK, US and beyond.  Carried out by the University of Birmingham, this work explores the role and experience of carers in different national contexts, highlighting good practice examples and making policy and practice recommendations. Unsurprisingly perhaps, the report highlights just how much we have in common with other countries in trying to make available effective, personalised supports against a backdrop of increased demand and diminishing resource.  Interestingly, the report explores the language of ‘respite’ which it suggests has ‘negative overtones’ and proposes a more creative approache to service provision is needed.

Vivek Ramaswamy Tells DREAMers To Pound Sand On Mass Deportations

The cruelty is the point with these disgusting excuses for human beings. Maybe they can do something about illegal immigrant Elon while they're at it. The incompetent first Trump administration got their rear ends handed to them during their last attempt to deport all of the DREAMers who were living in the United States under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, otherwise known as DACA.

Now they're ready to do it again with Trump's plans for mass deportations, that would destroy the United States' economy.

Trump supporter Vivek Ramaswamy, who could end up with a job in the Trump administration, made an appearance on ABC's This Week, and was asked about whether Trump would actually follow through with his threat or not, and when host Jonathan Karl brought up the DREAMers, who were brought here as children, Ramaswamy basically told them all to pound sand.

KARL: Now, obviously, Trump's promised --and you've talked a lot about this, the -- you know, mass deportation of undocumented immigrants.

Oh No: Dipshit Elon Musk's Tender

Speculation is that this is Putin's way of sending Trump a message in a way that Trump would understand. Putin has not called to congratulate Trump. As Julia Davis notes, "Meanwhile in Russia: this is how the most watched state TV channel in the country welcomed Melania Trump's upcoming return to the White House."

Not exactly subtle these Russians. And Putin was right. Trump called Putin today.

Source: Newsweek

A Russian state television network congratulated Melania Trump on her husband's reelection as president of the United States by showing nude photographs of her on live television, according to a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

On the show 60 minutes, Russian television presenters, husband and wife Yevgeny Popov and Olga Skabeyeva, spoke about Donald Trump's reelection and showed numerous photos from Melania Trump's modeling days on screen, including nude photographs from a GQ profile in 2000.

Julia Davis, founder of the Russia Media Monitor watchdog group, posted video of the broadcast alongside the caption: "Meanwhile in Russia: this is how the most watched state TV channel in the country welcomed Melania Trump's upcoming return to the White House. Olga Skabeeva is trying not to laugh. This was probably her idea."

Oh No: Dipshit Elon Musk's Tender Feelings Hurt By SNL Impersonation

Dipshit billionaire Leon Musk, who we fondly refer to as that stupid fuck, isn't amused by Dana Carvey's impersonation of him on Saturday Night Live. So, he took his little fingers to Xitter, the once behemoth social site he destroyed only to influence the election to his audience of conspiracy theorists and far-right edge lords that use Peppy the Frog in their postings or avatars.

Well, Leon got quite a paycheck for promoting convicted felon and adjudicated rapist Donald Trump, so at least he's happy while the rest of us remain in shock over the election results.

SNL's cold open got under Leon's fragile narcissistic skin where the actors, sort of like him, pretended to be on Trump's side with solid support.

Dana Carvey – who previously played President Joe Biden, and we didn't bitch about it -- played the part of Leon. You can see Carey's part that shook Elon at around the 3:30 mark in the cold open, and below.

“Check it out, dark MAGA,” Carvey said while impersonating Musk in a black MAGA hat. “But seriously, I run the country now,” he added.

Skeletor Is Trump's Deputy Chief Of Staff For Policy

Stephen Miller, Trump's former racist policymaker on immigration has a new role in the Trump administration.
His xenophobic views on immigration have led to the mass deportation plans Trump plans to implement.

"In an interview with The New York Times last year, Miller said that under a second Trump term, the military would build detention centers to house immigrants who have been arrested and are facing deportation. The new camps would likely be built “on open land in Texas near the border,” he told The Times. Miller told The Times that Trump’s immigration plans are being designed to avoid having to create new substantial legislation.

Miller will do everything in his power to eliminate Congress from blocking any of his immoral ideas.

CNN's Dana Bash played a short clip that reveals his evil intentions.

BASH: I just want to play a little bit of a flavor of Stephen Miller, who he is, what he says, and what he believes.

MILLER: America is for Americans and Americans only.

You have two policy objectives that you proceed with utter determination on.

Seal the border.

No illegals in, everyone here goes out.

That's very straightforward.

Alex Jones: Infowars Tagged For Death

One of the oldest conspiracy and 'black helicopter' frauds is now facing the hand of the law. Alex Jones is reaping what he sowed.

During a portion of his Info Wars program, Alex Jones lamented over how his show is being stripped and sold off after a just verdict against him for his lies about Sandy Hook victims and their families.

A verdict he described as a "Nazi show trial."

Sucks to be you, Alex. And it couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.

JONES: InfoWars, the equipment, InfoWars.com, InfoWarsStore.com, and a whole bunch of other stuff is at a federal bankruptcy auction from the fake judgments and the rigged trials where I was found guilty beforehand and they had literal show trials out of the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany.

Robin, I walked in here during the break after getting a glass of water, saw the auctioneers inside the building, going around surveying from the last time they were here to make sure all the stuff's here. Everything tagged, everything marked, this death.

Good riddance, you motherfrakker.

Rudy Giuliani is trying to avoid the same fate.

Lee Zeldin To Head EPA Under Trump

Another insurrectionist election denier now has a prominent job in Trump's administration. Former Congressman Lee Zeldin was tapped to oversee the Environmental Protection Agency.

God help us.

Fox News host Martha McCallum claimed the EPA is the enemy to big business, which is a joke. Without rules and regulations trying to keep in check massive corporations, multitudes of Americans would be dead, diseased, infected or damaged in some way.

ZELDIN: Through the EPA, we have the ability to pursue energy dominance, to be able to make the United States the artificial intelligence capital of the world, to bring back American jobs to the auto industry, and so much more.

President Trump cares about conserving the environment.

As you just mentioned in that statement from him, his desire to ensure access to clean air, clean water, it was a top priority.

Trump has repeatedly claimed there's no point getting chemicals out of our air since China doesn't care about it.

Environmental protects are out the window. And thanks to the kangaroo Supreme Court for gutting the EPA and their task of curbing greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.

Say goodbye to any climate change regulations and any effort to ensure the air that we breath and safe drinking water.

Fox Business Tries In Vain To Defend Trump's Crazy Tariff Plans

Fox Business host Charles Payne and contributor Steve Moore did their best to soft-peddle the damage Trump's cringeworthy plan of tariffs would have to the US economy but still came up short.

Payne, subbing for Neil Cavuto, went back to a US history that is no longer relevant to us to prop up the idea of tariffs.

PAYNE: How does President Trump plan to convince his fellow Republicans that this is the right way to go?

MOORE: Well, there's two issues here, Charles.

One is how do we make his landmark 2017 tax bill permanent, because as you know, if no action is taken this year, a lot of that tax bill expires and the average family would pay about $2,500 more in taxes and it would hurt our businesses.

This is what the 2%ers and corporations want more than life itself. Letting these tax cuts expire won't hurt anybody. It makes it harder for the rich to fiddle with their tax returns.

Now comes the rub. This is where their clucking begins.

MOORE: And then, of course, there's the secondary issue about the tariffs that Trump has been talking about. Now, maybe, I'm just thinking out loud here, Charles, and I've talked to some of the top economic advisors that have worked with me in the Trump campaign, we could maybe mix these two and use tariffs as a way to pay for some of these tax cuts.

Can A Woman Ever Win The US Presidency?

by Gabrielle Wallace/Cronkite News, Arizona Mirror
November 12, 2024

WASHINGTON – Women have led the governments of nearly a third of the countries on Earth as presidents, prime ministers and chancellors. Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat kept the 235-year-old glass ceiling in the United States unbroken.

“It absolutely will happen,” said Jean Sinzdak, associate director of the Rutgers Center for American Women and Politics.

Just not yet.

In Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum was sworn in last month as the 66th president and the first woman on that list. Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s first female prime minister, held office from 1979 to 1990 – longer than all but six occupants of Downing Street since 1721 when the title was first used.

Angela Merkel led Germany as its first female chancellor from 2005 to 2021, longer than all but two since Otto von Bismarck. Indira Gandhi broke the barrier in India when she became prime minister in 1966, three years before Golda Meir became Israel’s fourth prime minister.

The barrier has been shattered on every continent except Antarctica.

“The U.S. is far behind other nations, unfortunately. I think it will be a slow process,” said Kim Fridkin, an Arizona State University political scientist who studies women in politics, “although women are having more success in gaining office statewide as governors and U.S. senators.”

Eric Hovde Needs To Sh*t Or Get Off The Pot

During the campaign, California banker Eric Hovde kept telling Wisconsinites that he would accept the election results, even if he lost. It's starting to look like just another one of the many lies Hovde tried to tell voters.

The election was a week ago and the results are in. Senator Tammy Baldwin won reelection by almost 30,000 votes. The Associated Press called it in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. Baldwin gave her acceptance speech.

Also on Wednesday, Hovde issued a short statement that they were carefully monitoring to make sure every vote was counted. Since then, nothing. Nada. Zilch. No concession or anything. Not even a call for a recount. It's like Laguna Beach fell into the ocean or something. For all the bravado and machismo he tried to present with during the weekend, he turned out to be a big, old wussy.

As mentioned above, per Wisconsin law, Hovde is close enough to ask for a recount. However, he is not close enough to have the taxpayers pay for it. But after dropping tens of millions of his own dollars on the race, he's probably reluctant to throw away even more money. And it would be throwing it away. As the counties are finalizing their canvassing, there has been very little change in the numbers. Certainly not enough to change the outcome.

Hovde needs to man up and either call for a recount or do the smart thing for once and just concede. In other words, it's time to shit or get off the pot, dude.

The people of Wisconsin have the right to move on and move forward.

Will DeSantis Get Himself Appointed To Fill Marco Rubio's Seat?

Forget that occasionally sane Marco Rubio we've caught glimpses of, he will completely fold to Donald Trump as Secretary of State. Do we at least get closer to a Senate majority with his leaving? No, we do not.

Florida Man DeSantis gets to appoint Rubio's temporary Senate replacement. The seat doesn't open until 2028.

Whoever's appointed would serve until a 2026 special election to complete the final two years of Rubio's term - so whoever's appointed has to win again in 2028.

First off the bat, Puddin' Fingers could appoint his wife, Casey "I'm Really Jackie Kennedy" DeSantis, to hold the seat until his term as governor is up.

He could also appoint his lieutenant governor, Jeanette Nunez. That would leave the option of allowing her to appoint him to the Senate seat.

According to CBS News, Attorney General Ashley Moody and former Florida House Speaker Jose Oliva are also in the mix.

FAFO: Latino Believes Trump Won't Deport Family-Oriented Migrants

In today's edition of FAFO (F*ck Around and Find Out) we have a man who is probably going to learn the hard way that being one of the "good ones" means nothing to the Trump administration.

See, MAGA loyalty only goes one way. They want your vote, but won't do anything to make your life better. This Latino male Trump voter told CNN that mass deportation won't extend to law-abiding workers.

He actually said, with a straight face: “That wouldn’t be fair. They need to make sure that they don’t throw away, they don’t kick out, they don’t deport people that are family oriented.”

Sweetie, they don't care if you are family oriented or not. If you are working a good job or not. If you are a criminal or not. To them, being non-American is enough to get you kicked out (and probably put in a camp before). Enjoy that Trump hair visor hat, honey. The leopards are coming for your face.

The Border is a Budget

How are borders made? State borders are the product of political conflict, nationalist discourse, unequal economic systems, and, as this essay shows, significant public financial investment. Public policy and political narratives naturalize state borders, often hiding how their origins are arbitrary and violent. State borders often mark space following war and conflict, but they also […]
