Broadband Subsidy Program Ends But Debate Continues

Four months after the end of a subsidy program for home broadband, individual states are figuring out if and how they can expand access. Meanwhile the debate over the value and impact of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) continues to rage. The program launched in 2021 as part of a wider infrastructure package. It was available to households earning up to double the federal poverty level or with somebody in a government assistance program. Under the program, households would get a government-funded discount of up to $30 a month on broadband services and a one-off discount of $100 for a ... (view more)

Win10 End-of-Life has Major Security Implications

With less than a year to go, Microsoft is sticking to its vow to stop supporting Windows 10. Analysts remain unconvinced given it remains the most used version of Windows. Officially, October 14, 2025 will be the end of life date for the system. Although it will still work, Microsoft will no longer offer security updates for Windows as standard. Instead, users will have the option to pay for extended security support. (Source: microsoft.com ) 10 Year Life Cycle In principle, this is perfectly normal. FTC Vows End to Free Trial and Subscription Scams

American consumers and businesses should soon find it much easier to cancel subscriptions, "free trials" and other ongoing payments. The FTC has added what it's dubbed the "Click to Cancel" rule that means it must be as easy to cancel such arrangements as it is to start them. The regulation is formally known as the "Rule Concerning Recurring Subscriptions and Other Negative Option Programs." In this case "negative" means the provider will start or continue to take payments unless the user expressly cancels the arrangement. Free Trials Have Surprise Catch The FTC has been working on the ... (view more)

Fox And Friends On Pete Hegseth Nomination: 'Is That Real?'

Fox and Friends co host Steve Doocy admitted his shock after realizing Trump had actually tapped his Fox News colleague Pete Hegseth to be Defense Secretary.

"Is that real?" Doocy said, not believing it could be true.

The Fox and Friends hosts did their best to pretend their colleague is completely qualified to be the Secretary of Defense, even though he has no experience running anything other than a shell charity that he paid his brother with.

Doccy: So I’m looking at Twitter for a moment or X because I noticed that Peter Doocy was trending on Twitter and it turns out because he’s been suggested for press secretary. And that’s just so funny to me because it’s like, come on.

And then I saw this thing. Pete Hegseth has been named the nominee for press secretary or, rather, Secretary of Defense, and I thought, ‘Well, is that real?’ And then it started to like a gusher. All this news that essentially caught Washington totally off guard. Pete Hegseth! The guy on the couch, is Donald Trump’s selection to be the Secretary of Defense.

I didn't clip all the rest of their chitchat since they gave their rubes the basic "alternative facts" rationale to defend Donald Dump and anything MAGA.

They almost claimed Hegseth was overqualified for the job.

What a joke.

'She didn't actually quit': CEO fires assistant after she spends $2k on fake farewell party with company funds

There's something universally awkward about office parties—whether it's the forced mingling, the questionable food choices, or that one coworker who takes "open bar" a little too literally. Most of us just try to blend into the crowd, avoid making eye contact with our managers, and hope the night ends without too many cringe-worthy moments. But for one unfortunate team, a party to celebrate an employee's resignation was nothing more than a "social experiment."

It's one thing to make a grand exit when you're moving on to bigger things, but this employee decided to throw herself a farewell bash complete with company-funded catering, decorations, and a custom cake... all while the CEO was on out of the office. The CEO returned from a conference to find her assistant had announced her departure in a company-wide email and threw a party on the company's dime, just to admit she was never really leaving in the first place.

'Just remember that in da clurrb, we all fam': Boss sends fake message to his team only to start layoffs the next day

This is definitely not the tone you want to set before firing a bunch of people on your team!

This boss had the audacity to send a team-wide message to boost everyone's morale by including the overused colloquial statement, "just remember that in da clurrb, we all fam." Yes, it was written that exact way, and no, this message did not get the intended reaction from its audience. Instead, this toxic boss's employees responded with confusion, frustration, and eye-rolls about how outdated and desperate their employer was acting.

Well, their frustrations did not stop there because the very next day, their boss decided to begin a well-planned series of layoffs across the team. The Redditor, who shared the initial team-wide email for all of us to mock, was one of the unfortunate employees to be let go from the company. However, in the long run, perhaps he was spared because who wants a boss like that?

Keep scrolling below for the full story and for the best reactions from folks in the comments section. For more, check out this post about a hybrid employee who demanded a $15k raise if they were going to make him come into the office five days a week.

Apple Defends Mac Mini Power Button Relocation

Apple executives have defended the relocation of the power button to the bottom of its new M4 Mac mini, citing the computer's significantly reduced size as the driving factor behind the design change. In a Bilibili video interview, Apple's Greg Joswiak and John Ternus explained that the Mac mini's form factor, now half the size of its predecessor, necessitated finding a new position for the power button. The executives said that the bottom placement allows for convenient access despite initial user criticism.

Vineyard and Zipline Trends Collide at the Pinot Express

Chris Leschinsky
Vineyards and ziplines have long been used to attract tourist dollars for destinations that, well, could use a little help:
  • Regardless of the area's suitability for growing grapes, plop down a vineyard or winery and travelers will come for a taste and buy a sympathy bottle (pro tip: go for the ice wine as it's harder to mess up)
  • Ski resorts looking to attract off-season dollars or stale attractions looking to draw media coverage and visitors hook up a zipline
So really, the 1,800-foot Pinot Express zipline at Margarita Adventures, which debuted recently at the Santa Margarita Ranch in the Paso Robles wine country on California's Central Coast, is the travel industry's destiny.

bmj;387/nov12_10/q2481/FAF1faJulia and Malcolm Donaldsondonaldson20241111.f1Malcolm Donaldson was a distinguished paediatric endocrinologist with a string of research publications to his name—but he was also happy to play second fiddle (almost literally) to his wife Julia, the celebrated author of much loved children’s books, including The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom.Malcolm, a talented musician and performer, accompanied his wife as she toured festivals, schools, and libraries in the UK and around the world. Together they performed the stories, with Malcolm acting characters ranging from an accident prone dragon to a comic cattle thief. His star role, in the words of Julia’s literary agent, was “a particularly suave fox” in The Gruffalo.Malcolm met Julia Shields when they were students at the University of Bristol and they married in 1972. Donaldson went on to work in Brighton, London, and Lyon, France, before moving back to Bristol to be a senior registrar in paediatrics. Six...

Neural Predictors of Fear Depend on the Situation

The extent to which neural representations of fear experience depend on or generalize across the situational context has remained unclear. We systematically manipulated variation within and across three distinct fear-evocative situations including fear of heights, spiders, and social threats. Participants (n = 21; 10 females and 11 males) viewed ~20 s clips depicting spiders, heights, or social encounters and rated fear after each video. Searchlight multivoxel pattern analysis was used to identify whether and which brain regions carry information that predicts fear experience and the degree to which the fear-predictive neural codes in these areas depend on or generalize across the situations. The overwhelming majority of brain regions carrying information about fear did so in a situation-dependent manner. These findings suggest that local neural representations of fear experience are unlikely to involve a singular pattern but rather a collection of multiple heterogeneous brain states.
