Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use for pediatric asthma is increasing. It is well known that effective asthma management depends on patient adherence to treatment. The authors of previous cross-sectional studies have linked CAM use with decreased adherence to conventional asthma treatment regimens.

This longitudinal data set was unique, allowing us to focus on patients who initiated CAM and to follow subsequent asthma medication adherence. We found that CAM use was not associated with adherence, suggesting that patients may practice CAM alongside conventional therapies. (Read the full article)

Parents are increasingly following alternative immunization schedules. Current studies suggest up to 21% of parents in the United States are intentionally delaying or refusing some or all of the recommended early-childhood vaccines.

This is the first study to use Immunization Information System data to quantify the proportion of children consistently delaying receipt of vaccines. Consistent-limiting children were found to have lower levels of recommended vaccines. (Read the full article)

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is common among children, especially those with chronic, recurrent, or incurable conditions. Concurrent use of CAM with conventional medications is of concern and needs to be assessed, especially in vulnerable patient populations.

CAM use is high among pediatric cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, oncology, and respiratory patients, most of whom use CAM concurrently with conventional care. This study provides additional evidence to suggest the use of CAM be included in routine patient history taking. (Read the full article)

Payment arrangements that blend global budgets with pay-for-performance are proliferating. However, little is known about how these contracts affect pediatric health care quality and spending for children with and without special health care needs receiving care from large provider organizations.

A prototypical global budget contract significantly improved preventive care quality measures tied to pay-for-performance, especially for children with special health care needs. This study addresses the major geo-environmental hazards caused by shallow coal mining in China's western eco-environment frangible area. These hazards are related to the high overburden pressure, surface subsidence, soil and water losses, and land desertification, with consequent vegetation and wildlife losses. To mitigate these hazards, three alternative backfill mining methods are proposed, for three typical shallow coal mining conditions, using aeolian sand-based backfilling materials, which are readily available in this area. The main influencing factor is the backfill material compaction ratio. Its effect on aquiclude deformation and water-conducting fracture evolution are assessed by numerical and physical simulation methods. The potential application of the proposed backfill coal mining alternatives is evaluated and discussed in detail. The results obtained are considered to be valuable for developing a strategy for the coordinated exploitation of coal resources and environmental protection in China's western frangible eco-environment area.
