dis Apple Seeds Second Beta of visionOS 2.2 to Developers With Ultrawide Mac Virtual Display By www.macrumors.com Published On :: Tue, 12 Nov 2024 10:10:46 PST Apple today seeded the second beta of an upcoming visionOS 2.2 update to developers for testing purposes, with the beta coming a little over a week after the first visionOS 2.2 beta. visionOS 2.2 can be installed by going to the Software Update section of the Settings app on the Vision Pro and opting into Beta Updates. The visionOS 2.2 update adds a new feature for the Mac Virtual Display option, allowing it to be set to Wide and Ultrawide. The Ultrawide setting is equivalent to two 4K displays side-by-side, and it is a notable improvement over the current Mac Virtual Display that's available in visionOS 2.1. The Mac Virtual Display allows the Vision Pro to be connected to a Mac with the Vision Pro serving as the display for the machine. The virtual Mac desktop works just like a standard desktop with an external display, but Vision Pro does not support multiple displays. As a solution, Apple has added the option for a wider display to maximize space.Related Roundup: visionOS 2Related Forum: Apple Vision ProThis article, "Apple Seeds Second Beta of visionOS 2.2 to Developers With Ultrawide Mac Virtual Display" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums Full Article visionOS
dis Anti-gay Pagans, anti-other-kinds-of-pagans Pagans, and Cognitive Dissonance By robbby-robinson.blogspot.com Published On :: Tue, 28 Jun 2011 06:29:00 +0000 Last weekend I had a lively discussion with a friend about Pagans she has met who don’t condone or accept the LGBT community, especially as it is intermingled with Paganism. She has met some of this ilk (I have not) and described how they do not condone non-straight sexuality when it is expressed in Paganism, and how this type also has a limited view of what should be expressed as Paganism, and other expressions are wrong.I gave her the impression I was surprised to hear this, but it was not surprise, but shock. I knew intellectually that this type exists (since all types of everything exist,) but this was the first I had heard of actual encounters with such thinking. We followers of Earth-based spirituality are persecuted and ridiculed enough with us doing it to ourselves. Think of how Christine O’Donnell (who has no business holding public office, but that is another story) was openly ridiculed when an old clip of her surfaced where she stated she dabbled in witchcraft. It tanked whatever chances she had in her Senatorial race, and was it because she was the wrong picture to put on the pagan community? No, it was because any inference that one is a practicing pagan is social suicide in most parts of the United States. We pagans need to be accepting of each other, and open to the great cosmos that is all of us. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to be a pagan. Those who think otherwise are suffering from cognitive dissonance. Full Article Antigay antiotherkindsofpagans Cognitive Dissonance Pagans

dis Austin Distance Challenge! By greglsblog.blogspot.com Published On :: Thu, 26 May 2016 16:59:00 +0000 The famous Distance Challenge fridge magnets It's been a few months, but I finally have some time to sit down and blog my having completed the Austin Distance Challenge (long course), sponsored by the Austin Runners Club. I'd done most of the events before, but decided to do the challenge itself (six races, culminating in the Austin Marathon), because I wanted to put more structure into my training for the marathon. I'd done several in the 90s, but this was my second of the century and I wanted to do better than my last one (2013). The first race was the Run Free Texas 80s 8k (for those who don't think in metric, that's about five miles) up in Cedar Park. Naturally enough, there were a couple of DeLoreans, each outfitted with a flux capacitor. Time travel being what it is, they were obviously the same car but from different time periods. :-). The course was through residential neighborhoods and parks and had some rolling hills -- nice for a beginning of the season race. Back to the Future! The second race of the Challenge was the Run for the Water Ten Miler. The course was along Lady Bird Lake and up through Tarrytown and then back downtown, There were some great hills on this course and let me know I needed more hill work...And, ironically enough, it was raining. :-) Rain and hills Race three was the Decker Challenge, a half marathon in early December with a course around Decker Lake. It's notorious for hills and really bad weather. (The last time I ran it, it was in the 40s and pouring rain). If anything, last year, it was a bit too warm. The hills were pretty brutal, though. My face when attacking the hills But Santa was there! After that, we had a month break until the Rogue Distance Festival 30k (about 18.6 miles) in early January. This one was fairly cold and probably my least favorite of the events. It was up in Cedar Park again and ran through residential neighborhoods which was fine. There was an issue with marking the course, though, so most of us got off track, which meant the mile markers were out of order so it was impossible to figure out a pace. (I think at some point, we were going in circles -- and ended up going about a mile farther than we should've.). Still, it was my longest run before the marathon and I was kind of glad it happened that way. Yay! I'm done! :-) With four events done, it was all downhill from there. Literally. The 3M Half Marathon starts up in the Great Hills area and runs a straight line down to downtown. It also has a swag bag filled with useful (and not so useful) 3M products.:-) Leo checks out the swag bag This one also started out pretty cold and way too early :-). Before dawn, in the warm car before the cold race. I really enjoyed this one, though, and it was a nice preview of many of the neighborhoods on the marathon route. Finisher! The piece de resistance, of course, was the Austin Marathon in mid-February. I like the course, but the first time I ran the Austin Marathon, it was all downhill, starting up north and snaking its way downtown. Now, there's a good bit of uphill until around mile 18. I still like the course, though, and it's not like the hills from the Decker Challenge or the Run for the Water races. I was pretty happy with my time -- my second fastest of the century! I did it in under 4 hours, which had been my goal. Next year, I'll work more on speed, but this time, I just wanted to not have my quads seize up in the last two miles :-). Running through UT campus Made it! Best time of the century! Anyway, thanks to everyone involved in putting on the races and the challenge itself: organizers, volunteers, emergency personnel, and all the rest! You keep Austin running! dis Austin Distance Challenge 2016-17 By greglsblog.blogspot.com Published On :: Mon, 22 May 2017 14:44:00 +0000 This past year, I signed up for the Austin Distance Challenge again, because it was intrinsically fun, but also to ensure that I would get enough running in for the Austin Marathon. The Distance Challenge, sponsored by the Austin Runners Club, involved five races: The Run Free 8k, the Run for the Water 10 miler, the Decker Challenge half marathon, the 3M Half Marathon, and the Austin Marathon. The Run Free 8K is out in Cedar Park, a considerable distance from downtown. It leaves from one of the high school football stadiums and winds through residential neighborhoods before returning to the starting line. It's a nice start to the fall training season. The first piece of the puzzle Run for the Water goes through downtown and along the lakefront. It's one of the prettiest routes in the challenge and much of it is along routes I train on. Starting line on Cesar Chavez The drum group at the finish line A friend got this shot of me at the starting line. After that came the Decker Challenge -- a hilly route just east of Austin in Decker, and notorious for terrible weather. This year, it wasn't bad --- a bit misty with a steady drizzle. By the finish line, my glasses were so fogged up I had to take them off to see anything at all. Which made it difficult to see things like potholes... Glasses fogging up as I climb the hills Blindly crossing the finish line Not on the Challenge, but still an Austin staple was the Turkey Trot! One of the more fun races, it usually features a good number of costumes and a large helping of whimsy. After the holidays, the next race was the 3M Half Marathon. It's almost the exact opposite to the Decker Challenge, because it's all downhill. It starts up in the Great Hills area and winds its way downtown. This year it was a particularly fast run because there was an incredible wind out of the north. Several folks, including myself, were nearly blown over as we ran past the UT football stadium. A selfie at the starting line the 3M photographer got a shot of me taking my selfie After the finish in sight of the Capitol And the last race was the Austin Marathon! But. About three weeks before the race, in the middle of the night, I slipped and came down on the edge of my entertainment console and tile floors. Result? A nice set of bruised ribs and a strangely linear scar on my right side. By race day, I could still feel it a bit but had gone on short runs with only minor discomfort, so I decided to go for it. The first half went pretty well, but the second was less pleasant. But I'm still glad I did it... Looking all chipper and optimistic before the race starts Vulcan salute for the photographer Gritting it out with a hundred yards to go Finished! So my time for the marathon ended up being a personal worst, although I did make it under five hours :-). Anyway, thanks to all the organizers, volunteers, emergency personnel, and everyone else involved in putting on these races! You keep Austin running! Next up? The Capital of Texas Triathlon! Hopefully there won't be rain... Full Article Austin Distance Challenge Austin Marathon races

dis NYT Spelling Bee: an archive of disallowed BrE words By separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.com Published On :: Tue, 11 Apr 2023 00:34:00 +0000 Twitter has been my main internet stomping ground since 2009, but I've been withdrawing my labo(u)r from it since October, when it became much more volatile for some reason. The New York Times Spelling Bee has been my morning-coffee activity for some of those years, and since November 2020 I've been jokingly tweeting the BrE words that it hasn't accepted. These go in a thread of posts that always start: Perfectly Common BrE Words the @NYTimesGames Spelling Bee Has Denied Me: An Occasional SeriesTwitter has really degraded this week, which is making me feel a bit sad that perhaps that thread will have to die. (I'm also sad that the thread has frayed along the way—it's very difficult to read it all the way to the beginning because it splits here and there.) So as a clearly procrastinatory measure, I'm putting the list of "perfectly common BrE words" here, with a little more explanation than they tended to get on Twitter. For those who don't know the Bee: it's an anagram game where one must use the middle letter. The twist—and what makes it a superior anagram game—is that you can use any of the letters as many times as you like. Here's what it looked like on the 5th of April when I hadn't yet got to Genius level. (My goal every day is 'make it to Genius before breakfast'. It's nice to be called 'Genius' before you've started work.) The game, of course, has its own word list, which is suitably American for its New York Times home. Still, some not-usually-AmE words are playable, like FLATMATE, LORRY and PRAM. But many words that are part of my everyday vocabulary in England are not playable. And non-AmE spellings are generally not playable. There's been a lot of attention to AmE words that (orig. AmE) stump non-American players in Wordle. (Here's Cambridge Dictionary's 2022 Word of the Year post, which covers some—and includes a video in which I talk about why HOMER was a great choice for Word of the Year.) Not as much attention has been paid to the Spelling Bee, which you need to subscribe to. I'm sure British players have their own (mental) lists of American words they've had to learn in order to get "Queen Bee" status (finding all the day's words) in the game. If you're one of them, do use the comments to tell us about those weird words. So, after all that preamble, here are the "Perfectly Common BrE Words the @NYTimesGames Spelling Bee Has Denied Me" words in alphabetical order, with translations or links to other blog posts. But first, a bit more preamble. The disclaimers! Words in the puzzle must be at least four letters long, so some of these are suffixed forms for which the three-letter base word was unplayable. If there's an -ED form but not an -ING form (etc.), that'll be because the other one's letters weren't in the puzzle. Some of these would not have been allowable—regardless of their dialectal provenance—on the basis that they are "naughty" words. I include them anyway. I have checked questionable cases against the GloWbE corpus to ensure that the word really is more common in BrE than AmE.Some are Irish or Australian by origin, but they are still more common in BrE than in AmE.Sometimes my spelling is a bit liberal here. If I could find one British dictionary that allowed me the word with the given spelling, I included it. Also the phrase "perfectly common" is not meant to be taken too seriously! These words were not playable at the time when I tried to play them. The word list may have changed and some of them may be playable now. Red ones are ones that have been unsuccessfully played/tweeted about since I first started this blog list. Green ones have been added to the blog since the original post, but were tweeted-about earlier than that—I just missed them in the tangled Twitter threads when I was writing the blog post. dis College Students Built Frozen-Themed Prosthetic Arm for a 9-Year-Old Girl to Help Fulfill Her Dream of Becoming a Disney Princess By cheezburger.com Published On :: Wed, 29 Jun 2016 10:00:00 -0700 The arm was created by Enabling the Future, which has a chapter at Sienna College in Albany, New York. For its first project the Siena e-NABLE group made an Iron Man-themed hand for 5-year-old Jack Carder in Ohio. In this case, nine-year-old Karissa Mitchell's (who was born without a right hand and most of her wrist) mother reached out to the group on campus, Siena College's director of marketing and communications said. "She's watched the movie at least 100 times. We sing the songs all the time. We even have a karaoke machine that's 'Frozen'-themed," said Karissa's mother. The prosthetic was built using a 3-D printer and is comprised of 30 parts (it took near 30 hours to make). To help Karissa achieve her dream of becoming a Disney princess, the team used "a pretty transparent ice blue color filament and added snowflakes to the forearm and her name with an Elsa crown on the cuff," said Alyx Gleason, the project lead and president of Siera e-NABLE. The arm also came with an Olaf LED light source.Anyone who is in need of an arm or hand is encouraged to reach out to Siena e-NABLE.
