races Schools shut, thousands evacuated as Spain braces for fresh floods By www.dawn.com Published On :: Wed, 13 Nov 2024 18:19:24 +0500 Parts of Spain are bracing for more dangerous flooding on Wednesday as a fresh storm system is set to release huge amounts of rainfall. The torrential downpours come just 15 days after a storm system triggered catastrophic flooding, killing at least 223 people and devastating the province of Valencia. Once again, the affected area is under orange alert for heavy rainfall. In Valencia, dozens of municipalities have cancelled classes. While the meteorological agency does not predict Valencia will get the worst of this storm, sewage systems are still full of mud from the last floods, which could complicate drainage. This time, the areas under red alert are around the Malaga and Tarragona regions. In Malaga, around 3,000 people have been evacuated from their homes on the banks of the Guadalhorce River. The same area also experienced flooding two weeks ago. Residents of the province of Malaga received cell phone alerts on Tuesday night, warning of an “extreme risk of rainfall” and advising them to avoid travel. Schools will not open on Wednesday across all of Malaga and the Granada coast. Meanwhile, some roads are being blocked, schools are closing, and rail lines are being cancelled in Tarragona, in the south of Catalonia. The preventative measures on Wednesday stand in contrast to the lack of an early warning in Valencia two weeks ago. There, despite being on red alert for rainfall, residents were generally not advised to stay home or seek higher ground until the flooding had already reached catastrophic levels. Both storm systems were caused by a weather phenomenon known as a Dana in Spain or a “cut-off low.” These occur when low-pressure areas get cut off from the westerly winds of the jet stream. Since they are isolated from the jet stream, they can move slowly and erratically, releasing huge amounts of rain over small areas. This storm system began affecting Spain on Tuesday and is expected to last until at least Friday, according to Spain’s meteorological agency. Speaking at COP29 on Tuesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez linked the intensity of these weather events to climate change. “Climate change kills,” he said, urging more action to reduce greenhouse gases to prevent future natural disasters. Last week, hundreds of residents of a Valencia suburb particularly badly hit by last week’s deadly floods protested during a visit by Spanish King Felipe and Prime Minister Sanchez, with some throwing mud at them. Chanting “Murderers, murderers!” they vented pent-up anger over what has been widely perceived by local residents as tardy alerts from the authorities about the dangers of the storm and flooding in the Valencia region, and then a late response by the emergency services when disaster struck. “It was known and nobody did anything to avoid it,” a young man told the king, who insisted on staying on to talk to the people despite the turmoil, while the prime minister had withdrawn. races The Holiness Movement by Gary Gilley -- The Holiness Movement actually traces its roots to John Wesley (June 28, 1703 - March 2, 1791) in the eighteenth-century, who taught sort of a two-tiered salvation - The first tier [John 20:22, Luke 24:45 - initial By www.svchapel.org Published On :: Revivalists, in the early 1800s, such as Asa Mahan (president of Oberlin College) and evangelist Charles Finney advanced Wesley's theology. They taught "that sinners had the natural ability to believe, and that evangelistic methods could overcome their 'moral' inability through the persuasive power of the Gospel." "Finney and Mahan applied this same understanding to the Christian's growth toward spiritual maturity. To be sanctified, they insisted, required only the same kind of simple, instantaneous faith one exercised to be converted." In 1836 both men experienced what they called "baptisms of the Holy Ghost" which they believed not only freed them from committing sin but also removed their tendency toward sin. Contributing to the spread of this "Holiness" doctrine were the popular camp meeting revivals of the first half of the 1800s, the ministry of Phoebe Palmer (1807-1874) (who taught that sanctification could be reached instantaneously by an act of faith) and the "Prayer Revival" of 1857-1858 (sometimes called the Third Great Awakening). There was also much unrest in Methodist circles as many felt the denomination had lost its fervor. The Wesleyan Methodist (in 1843) and the Free Methodist (in 1860) left the denomination to form the first Holiness denominations. Until the 1890s the Holiness Movement was largely a Methodist phenomenon, but as the Methodists settled more into mainstream Christianity tensions escalated into a schism which resulted in new, non-Methodist, Holiness denominations. These included the Church of God, Anderson, Indiana (1880), Church of the Nazarene (1908) and Pilgrim Holiness Church (1897). The Holiness adherents saw themselves as the true descendents of the Wesleys and practiced strict moral ethics, abstinence from worldly pleasures and amusements and a strong belief in entire sanctification (also known as the "second blessing" and the baptism of the Holy Spirit). More importantly "Holiness teaching offered 19th-century evangelicals a means of overcoming their sectarian conflicts. Doctrine might divide, but the experience of a pure heart would unite all true believers against the threats posed by religious formalism, atheism, and Roman Catholicism." This Holiness emphasis would continue to be spread throughout the 19th century by individuals and groups as diverse as the Salvation Army, Quakers, D. L. Moody, Hannah Whitall Smith, the Y.M.C.A., the Keswick Movement and Oswald Chambers. A brief explanation concerning some of those might prove helpful. ... Maturity in Christ is expected of every believer; freedom from spiritual battle with the world, the flesh and the devil is attained only in the next life. At the same time, we must be careful that we do not over react to Holiness philosophy and believe that godliness is attained through our own self-determined efforts of obedience. We are certainly called to obedience, but it is not a self-energized, self-motivated or self-obtaining obedience. It is an obedience made possible only because of the power of God in our lives. This is the consistent teaching of the New Testament, but we will direct our attention to Romans 8:12-13. So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Peterson, once again, summarizes things well, "Holiness of life is not simply attained by moral effort nor even by striving to keep the law of God. It is not even a matter of 'letting go and letting God.' Practical holiness involves 'putting to death' in our lives what God has already sentenced to death on the cross ('mortification') and living out the new life given to us by the indwelling Christ. Human effort is required, but not apart from, nor distinct from the activity of God's Spirit, who subdues the flesh as we mortify it in His power, and as we set our minds upon the things of the Spirit." -- Holiness of life should be the heart-felt desire of every Christian. But that holiness is not found in either short-cuts or self effort. **It is found as we pursue righteousness (2 Timothy 2:22) laying aside the deeds of the flesh (Colossians 3:5-10) through the power of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16) and as we behold the glory of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18). The Holiness Movement was in many ways a reaction to the dead orthodoxy and lifeless spirituality that infiltrated so much of Christianity during the nineteenth-century. However, its [explicit] remedy, a second blessing [based more on human ability] resulting in the eradication of sinful tendencies and a higher life not available to the unbaptized, went beyond the teaching of Scripture. As is often the case in reactionary movements, the cure [i.e. a cultural salvation, human based rules salvation] may be as bad as the [original sin] disease. Full Article

races Chooch’s Branding Embraces Authenticity Through Playful Imperfection By abduzeedo.com Published On :: Wed, 06 Nov 2024 14:30:53 +0000 Chooch’s Branding Embraces Authenticity Through Playful Imperfection abduzeedo1106—24 Discover how amStudio’s branding and visual identity of Chooch captures authentic, handmade aesthetics for fashion accessories. Chooch, formerly known as Flat Fifteen, has redefined its brand to better reflect its founder Francesca Kappo’s evolving vision. With the guidance of amStudio, this rebrand has transformed the brand’s identity from a broad handmade focus to one that is solely centered around fashion accessories. Chooch stands out with its playful name, unique backstory, and brand elements that weave together storytelling, imperfection, and tactile aesthetics. The Meaning Behind “Chooch” The rebranding from Flat Fifteen to Chooch came as Francesca Kappo shifted her focus. The name “Chooch” is personal, rooted in a nickname given to Francesca by her uncle. He also played a foundational role in the brand’s beginnings, supplying her first batch of deadstock fabrics from his 1990s fashion label. These fabrics continue to be a vital part of Chooch’s accessory designs today, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to sustainability and storytelling. The name itself is more than just a rebranding—it’s a celebration of heritage and identity. Short, memorable, and fun to say, “Chooch” captures the playful spirit of the brand. As Alam Mohammed, founder of amStudio, notes, the name’s flexibility in pronunciation makes it a warm, approachable identity that consumers can connect with personally. This idea carried over to the logo design, where the doubled O’s have a playful, imperfect alignment, mirroring the brand’s handmade ethos. Playful Imperfection: The Brand Identity Alam Mohammed and his team at amStudio developed a brand identity for Chooch that prioritizes authenticity. Hand-painted illustrations are central to this, appearing across the brand’s packaging, website, and social media. This choice keeps the look grounded, tactile, and relatable, evoking the feel of handmade fashion. By maintaining this aesthetic, the brand sets itself apart in a market often dominated by hyper-polished digital imagery. The branding extends beyond static visuals. Chooch’s social media and marketing leverage stop-motion animations, adding a dynamic yet still homemade feel. This use of motion emphasizes the brand’s accessible nature, where every element ties back to the concept of imperfection being perfectly beautiful. The stop-motion clips give life to the fashion accessories, highlighting the fun and creativity behind each product. Chooch’s narrative goes deeper than playful design. By continuing to use deadstock fabrics, Francesca Kappo honors her roots and commits to a more sustainable future. The tactile branding elements mirror this philosophy, creating a seamless experience from the physical product to the digital space. The history of the materials and the personal touch behind the brand make each accessory more than just a fashion statement—they become a story in themselves. The rebranding also came with strategic moves to elevate Chooch’s market presence. The bags are now featured at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s shop as part of the first-ever Naomi Campbell exhibition. This collaboration has not only introduced the brand to a wider audience but also solidified its standing as a contemporary, fashion-forward label. The exhibition has boosted Chooch’s brand awareness and increased its social media following, translating to more sales and a growing fan base. The Chooch rebrand exemplifies a growing trend: the embrace of imperfection in design. By favoring hand-drawn illustrations, irregular alignments, and a conversational tone, amStudio has given the brand an inviting, human feel. This approach rejects the overly polished and instead celebrates the beauty of the handmade. It’s a move that resonates well in today’s world, where consumers value authenticity and transparency. Chooch’s rebranding is a masterclass in how thoughtful design can reflect a brand’s core values. From its name rooted in personal history to its playful logo and tactile illustrations, Chooch stays true to its story. Alam Mohammed and the amStudio team have created a brand identity that isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling real, celebrating imperfections, and staying connected to tradition. As Chooch grows, its story continues to inspire, reminding us that the imperfect is often the most perfect of all. Branding and visual identity artifacts Full Article

races Oracle Code Innovate Retools, Embraces Virtual Format to Engage Developers By traffic.libsyn.com Published On :: Wed, 17 Nov 2021 16:37:01 +0000 Jim Grisanzio from Oracle Developer Relations talks with Chip Baber from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) about the Oracle Code Innovate Program. The conversation centers around building the cloud community by working directly with developers — that's side by side, hands on coding collaboration — on real cloud projects for active customers. The program, which started in 2018 with in-person sprints and moved virtual in 2020, uses a flexible Agile framework that spans a week of interactions, such as planning, training, ideation, coding, standups, demos, etc. What’s great about the program is that all sides learn — the customer’s developers get more direct experience coding in OCI, the customer’s executive management gets needed projects initiated that can be evolved to eventual deployment, and Oracle gets valuable engineering feedback that can help improve OCI. Plus, it’s fun. People at all levels who contribute to the project are really passionate about it. Listen in to hear why.
