AP-XPS beamline, a platform for operando science at Pohang Accelerator Laboratory

Beamline 8A (BL 8A) is an undulator-based soft X-ray beamline at Pohang Accelerator Laboratory. This beamline is aimed at high-resolution ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS), soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (soft-XAS) and scanning photoemission microscopy (SPEM) experiments. BL 8A has two branches, 8A1 SPEM and 8A2 AP-XPS, that share a plane undulator, the first mirror (M1) and the monochromator. The photon beam is switched between the two branches by changing the refocusing mirrors after the monochromator. The acceptance angle of M1 is kept glancing at 1.2°, and Pt is coated onto the mirrors to achieve high reflectance, which ensures a wide photon energy range (100–2000 eV) with high resolution at a photon flux of ∼1013 photons s−1. In this article, the main properties and performance of the beamline are reported, together with selected experiments performed on the new beamline and experimental system.

Understanding the mechanical limitations of the performance of soft X-ray monochromators at MAX IV laboratory

MAX IV is a fourth-generation, or diffraction-limited, synchrotron light source with a number of state-of-the-art beamlines. The performance of a beamline is, to a high degree, set by the energy resolution it can achieve, which in turn is governed to a large extent by the monochromator. During the design phase of a monochromator, the mechanical requirements must be fully understood and met with margin. During commissioning, the performance must be verified and optimized. In this paper, six soft X-ray monochromators at MAX IV beamlines (Bloch, Veritas, HIPPIE, SPECIES, FinEstBeAMS and SoftiMAX) are examined with a focus on their resolving power, energy range and the time required to change measurement range, as those parameters are dependent on each other. The monochromators have a modern commercial design, planned and developed in close collaboration with the vendors. This paper aims to present the current status of the commissioning at MAX IV with emphasis on elucidating the mechanical limitations on the performance of the monochromators. It contains analysis of the outcome and our approach to achieve fast and high-resolution monochromators.

Polymeric poly[[decaaquabis(μ6-1,8-disulfonato-9H-carbazole-3,6-dicarboxylato)di-μ3-hydroxy-pentazinc] decahydrate]

The asymmetric unit of the title MOF, [Zn5(C14H5NO10S2)2(OH)2(H2O)10]n comprises three ZnII atoms, one of which is located on a centre of inversion, a tetra-negative carboxylate ligand, one μ3-hydroxide and five water molecules, each of which is coordinated. The ZnII atom, lying on a centre of inversion, is coordinated by trans sulfoxide-O atoms and four water molecules in an octahedral geometry. Another ZnII atom is coordinated by two carboxylate-O atoms, one hydroxy-O, one sulfoxide-O and a water-O atom to define a distorted trigonal–bipyramidal geometry; a close Zn⋯O(carboxylate) interaction derived from an asymmetrically coordinating ligand (Zn—O = 1.95 and 3.07 Å) suggests a 5 + 1 coordination geometry. The third ZnII atom is coordinated in an octahedral fashion by two hydroxy-O atoms, one carboxylate-O, one sulfoxide-O and two water-O atoms, the latter being mutually cis. In all, the carboxylate ligand binds six ZnII ions leading to a three-dimensional architecture. In the crystal, all acidic donors form hydrogen bonds to oxygen acceptors to contribute to the stability of the three-dimensional architecture.

Redetermination of the crystal structure of BaTeO3(H2O), including the localization of the hydrogen atoms

The redetermination of the crystal structure of barium oxidotellurate(IV) monohydrate allowed the localization of the hydrogen atoms that were not determined in the previous study [Nielsen, Hazell & Rasmussen (1971). Acta Chem. Scand. 25, 3037–3042], thus making an unambiguous assignment of the hydrogen-bonding scheme possible. The crystal structure shows a layered arrangement parallel to (001), consisting of edge-sharing [BaO6(H2O)] polyhedra and flanked by isolated [TeO3] trigonal pyramids on the top and bottom. O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds of medium strength link adjacent layers along [001].

Trinuclear copper–pyrazolate entities are present in various Cu-based enzymes and nanojar supramolecular arrangements. The reaction of copper(II) chloride with pyrazole (pzH) and sodium benzoate (benzNa) assisted by microwave radiation afforded a neutral centrosymmetric hexanuclear copper(II) complex, [Cu6(C7H5O2)4(OH)2(C3H3N2)6(C2H5OH)2]·2C2H5OH. Half a molecule is present in the asymmetric unit that comprises a [Cu3(μ3-OH)(pz)3]2+ core with the copper(II) atoms arranged in an irregular triangle. The three copper(II) atoms are bridged by an O atom of the central hydroxyl group and by three bridging pyrazolate ligands on each of the sides. The carboxylate groups show a chelating mode to one and a bridging syn,syn mode to the other two CuII atoms. The coordination environment of one CuII atom is square-planar while it is distorted square-pyramidal for the other two. Two ethanol molecules are present in the asymmetric unit, one binding to one of the CuII atoms, one as a solvent molecule. In the crystal, stabilization arises from intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Poly[(μ4-phenylphosphonato)zinc(II)]

The title two-dimensional coordination polymer, [Zn(C6H5PO3)]n, was synthesized serendipitously by reacting a tetraphosphonate cavitand Tiiii[C3H7, CH3, C6H5] and Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O in a DMF/H2O mixture. The basic conditions of the reaction cleaved the phosphonate bridges at the upper rim of the cavitand, making them available for reaction with the zinc ions. The coordination polymer can be described as an inorganic layer in which zinc coordinates the oxygen atoms of the phosphonate groups in a distorted tetrahedral environment, while the phenyl groups, which are statistically disordered over two orientations, point up and down with respect to the layer. The layers interact through van der Waals interactions. The crystal studied was refined as a two-component twin.

In the title compound, [Cu2(C7HF4O2)4(C12H8N2)2(CH3OH)], the molecule lies on a twofold rotation axis in space group C2/c. The Cu2+ ion exhibits a distorted octahedral sphere with two N atoms from the phenanthroline ligand, three O atoms from the 2,3,4,5-tetrafluorobenzoate ligands and one O atom from a methanol molecule. The distortion from an octahedral shape is a consequence of the Jahn–Teller effect of CuII and the small bite angle for the bidentate fluorobenzoate ligand [54.50 (11)°]. The methanol molecule bridges two symmetry-related CuII atoms to form the complete molecule. In the bidentate fluorobenzoate ligand, one F atom is disordered over two positions of equal occupancy. In the crystal structure, only weak intermolecular interactions are observed.

The solvated centrosymmmtric title compound, [Li2(C24H34O4P)2(C10H8N2)2]·2C7H8, was formed in the reaction between {Li[(2,6-iPr2C6H3-O)2POO](MeOH)3}(MeOH) and 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) in toluene. The structure has monoclinic (P21/n) symmetry at 120 K and the asymmetric unit consists of half a complex molecule and one molecule of toluene solvent. The diaryl phosphate ligand demonstrates a μ-κO:κO'-bridging coordination mode and the 2,2'-bipyridine ligand is chelating to the Li+ cation, generating a distorted tetrahedral LiN2O2 coordination polyhedron. The complex exhibits a unique dimeric Li2O4P2 core. One isopropyl group is disordered over two orientations in a 0.621 (4):0.379 (4) ratio. The title compound, [Fe2(C44H28N4O)2O], was obtained as a by-product during the synthesis of FeIII tetraphenylporphyrin perchlorate. It crystallizes as a new polymorphic modification in addition to the orthorhombic form previously reported [Hoffman et al. (1972). J. Am. Chem. Soc. 94, 3620–3626; Swepston & Ibers (1985) Acta Cryst. C41, 671–673; Kooijmann et al. (2007). Private Communication (refcode 667666). CCDC, Cambridge, England]. In its crystal structure, the two crystallographically independent FeIII cations are coordinated in a square-planar environment by the four N atoms of a tetraphenylporphyrin ligand. The FeIII-tetraphenylporphyrine units are linked by a μ2-oxido ligand into a dimer with an Fe—O—Fe angle close to linearity. The final coordination sphere for each FeIII atom is square-pyramidal with the μ2-oxido ligand in the apical position. The crystal under investigation consisted of two domains in a ratio of 0.691 (3): 0.309 (3).

Crystal structure, synthesis and thermal properties of tetrakis(4-benzoylpyridine-κN)bis(isothiocyanato-κN)iron(II)

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Fe(NCS)2(C12H9NO)4], consists of an FeII ion that is located on a centre of inversion, as well as two 4-benzoylpyridine ligands and one thiocyanate anion in general positions. The FeII ions are coordinated by two N-terminal-bonded thiocyanate anions and four 4-benzoylpyridine ligands into discrete complexes with a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. These complexes are further linked by weak C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds into chains running along the c-axis direction. Upon heating, this complex loses half of the 4-benzoylpyridine ligands and transforms into a compound with the composition Fe(NCS)2(4-benzoylpyridine)2, that might be isotypic to the corresponding MnII compound and for which the structure is unknown.

Synthesis, characterization, and crystal structure of aquabis(4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine)[μ-(2R,3R)-tartrato(4−)]dicopper(II) octahydrate

Typical electroless copper baths (ECBs), which are used to chemically deposit copper on printed circuit boards, consist of an aqueous alkali hydroxide solution, a copper(II) salt, formaldehyde as reducing agent, an l-(+)-tartrate as complexing agent, and a 2,2'-bipyridine derivative as stabilizer. Actual speciation and reactivity are, however, largely unknown. Herein, we report on the synthesis and crystal structure of aqua-1κO-bis(4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine)-1κ2N,N';2κ2N,N'-[μ-(2R,3R)-2,3-dioxidosuccinato-1κ2O1,O2:2κ2O3,O4]dicopper(II) octahydrate, [Cu2(C12H12N2O2)2(C4H2O6)(H2O)]·8H2O, from an ECB mock-up. The title compound crystallizes in the Sohncke group P21 with one chiral dinuclear complex and eight molecules of hydrate water in the asymmetric unit. The expected retention of the tartrato ligand's absolute configuration was confirmed via determination of the absolute structure. The complex molecules exhibit an ansa-like structure with two planar, nearly parallel bipyridine ligands, each bound to a copper atom that is connected to the other by a bridging tartrato `handle'. The complex and water molecules give rise to a layered supramolecular structure dominated by alternating π stacks and hydrogen bonds. The understanding of structures ex situ is a first step on the way to prolonged stability and improved coating behavior of ECBs.

(1R,2S,4r)-1,2,4-Triphenylcyclopentane-1,2-diol and (1R,2S,4r)-4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenylcyclopentane-1,2-diol: application as initiators for ring-opening polymerization of ∊-caprolactone

Reductive cyclization of 1,3,5-triphenyl- and 3-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1,5-diphenylpentane-1,5-diones by zinc in acetic acid medium leads to the formation of 1,2,4-triphenylcyclopentane-1,2-diol [1,2,4-Ph3C5H5-1,2-(OH)2, C23H22O2, (I)] and 4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenylcyclopentane-1,2-diol [4-(2-MeOC6H4)-1,2-Ph2C5H5-1,2-(OH)2, C24H24O3, (II)]. Their single crystals have been obtained by crystallization from a THF/hexane solvent mixture. Diols (I) and (II) crystallize in orthorhombic (Pbca) and triclinic (Poverline{1}) space groups, respectively, at 150 K. Their asymmetric units comprise one [in the case of (I)] and three [in the case of (II)] crystallographically independent molecules of the achiral (1R,2S,4r)-diol isomer. Each hydroxyl group is involved in one intramolecular and one intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bond, forming one-dimensional chains. Compounds (I) and (II) have been used successfully as precatalyst activators for the ring-opening polymerization of ∊-caprolactone.

Crystal structure, spectroscopic characterization and Hirshfeld surface analysis of trans-diaqua[2,5-bis(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole]dithiocyanatonickel(II)

The reaction of 2,5-bis(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (4-pox) and thiocyanate ions, used as co-ligand with nickel salt NiCl2·6H2O, produced the title complex, [Ni(NCS)2(C12H8N4O)2(H2O)2]. The NiII atom is located on an inversion centre and is octahedrally coordinated by four N atoms from two ligands and two pseudohalide ions, forming the equatorial plane. The axial positions are occupied by two O atoms of coordinated water molecules. In the crystal, the molecules are linked into a three-dimensional network through strong O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds. Hirshfeld surface analysis was used to investigate the intermolecular interactions in the crystal packing.

Crystal structure of bis[dihydrobis(pyrazol-1-yl)borato-κ2N2,N2'](1,10-phenanthroline-κ2N,N')zinc(II)

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Zn(C6H8N4B)2(C12H8N2)], comprises one half of a ZnII cation (site symmetry 2), one dihydrobis(pyrazol-1-yl)borate ligand in a general position, and one half of a phenanthroline ligand, the other half being completed by twofold rotation symmetry. The ZnII cation is coordinated in form of a slightly distorted octahedron by the N atoms of a phenanthroline ligand and by two pairs of N atoms of symmetry-related dihydrobis(pyrazol-1-yl)borate ligands. The discrete complexes are arranged into columns that elongate in the c-axis direction with a parallel alignment of the phenanthroline ligands, indicating weak π–π interactions.

Crystal structure of poly[[[μ4-3-(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)adamantane-1-carboxylato-κ5N1:N2:O1:O1,O1']silver(I)] dihydrate]

The heterobifunctional organic ligand, 3-(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)adamantane-1-carboxylate (tr-ad-COO−), was employed for the synthesis of the title silver(I) coordination polymer, {[Ag(C13H16N3O2)]·2H2O}n, crystallizing in the rare orthorhombic C2221 space group. Alternation of the double μ2-1,2,4-triazole and μ2-η2:η1-COO− (chelating, bridging mode) bridges between AgI cations supports the formation of sinusoidal coordination chains. The AgI centers possess a distorted {N2O3} square-pyramidal arrangement with τ5 = 0.30. The angular organic linkers connect the chains into a tetragonal framework with small channels along the c-axis direction occupied by water molecules of crystallization, which are interlinked via O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds with carboxylate groups, leading to right- and left-handed helical dispositions.

Crystal structure of poly[[(μ3-hydroxido-κ3O:O:O)(μ3-selenato-κ3O1:O2:O3)tris[μ3-2-(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)acetato-κ3N1:N2:O]tricopper(II)] dihydrate]

The title coordination polymer, {[Cu3(C4H4N3O9)3(SeO4)(OH)]·2H2O}n or ([Cu3(μ3-OH)(trgly)3(SeO4)]·2H2O), crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c. The three independent Cu2+ cations adopt distorted square-pyramidal geometries with {O2N2+O} polyhedra. The three copper centres are bridged by a μ3-OH anion, leading to a triangular [Cu3(μ3-OH)] core. 2-(1,2,4-Triazol-4-yl)acetic acid (trgly-H) acts in a deprotonated form as a μ3-κ3N1:N2:O ligand. The three triazolyl groups bridge three copper centres of the hydroxo-cluster in an N1:N2 mode, thus supporting the triangular geometry. The [Cu3(μ3-OH)(tr)3] clusters serve as secondary building units (SBUs). Each SBU can be regarded as a six-connected node, which is linked to six neighbouring triangles through carboxylate groups, generating a two-dimensional uninodal (3,6) coordination network. The selenate anion is bound in a μ3-κ3O1:O2:O3 fashion to the trinuclear copper platform. The [Cu3(OH)(trgly)3(SeO4)] coordination layers and guest water molecules are linked together by numerous O—H⋯O and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, leading to a three-dimensional structure.

Crystal structure of (15,20-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-5,10-{(pyridine-3,5-diyl)bis[(sulfanediylmethylene)[1,1'-biphenyl]-4',2-diyl]}porphyrinato)nickel(II) dichloro

The crystal structure of the title compound, [Ni(C63H31F10N5S2)]·xCH2Cl2 (x > 1/2), consists of Ni–porphyrin complexes that are located in general positions and dichloromethane solvent molecules that are disordered around centers of inversion. The NiII ions are in a square-pyramidal (CN5) coordination, with four porphyrin N atoms in the equatorial and a pyridine N atom in the apical position and are shifted out of the porphyrine N4 plane towards the coordinating pyridine N atom. The pyridine substituent is not exactly perpendicular to the N4 plane with an angle of intersection between the planes planes of 80.48 (6)°. The dichloromethane solvent molecules are hydrogen bonded to one of the four porphyrine N atoms. Two complexes are linked into dimers by two symmetry-equivalent C—H⋯S hydrogen bonds. These dimers are closely packed, leading to cavities in which additional dichloromethane solvent molecules are embedded. These solvent molecules are disordered and because no reasonable split model was found, the data were corrected for disordered solvent using the PLATON SQUEEZE routine [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst. C71, 9–18].

Crystal structure of tetra-μ-acetato-bis[(5-amino-2-methylsulfanyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-κN1)copper(II)]

The reaction of 2-methylthio-5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (Me-SNTD; C3H5N3S2) with copper(II) acetate monohydrate [Cu(OAc)2·H2O; C4H8CuO5] resulted in the formation of the title binuclear compound, [Cu2(C2H3O2)4(C3H5N3S2)2] or [Cu2(OAc)4(Me-SNTD)2]. The structure has triclinic (P overline{1}) symmetry with a crystallographic inversion centre located at the midpoint of the line connecting the Cu atoms in the dimer. These two Cu atoms of the dimer [Cu⋯Cu = 2.6727 (6) Å] are held together by four carboxylate groups. Each Cu atom is further coordinated to the N atom of an Me-SNTD molecule and exhibits a Jahn–Teller-distorted octahedral geometry. The dimers are connected into infinite chains by hydrogen bonds between the NH (Me-SNTD) and the carboxylate groups of neighbouring molecules, generating an R22(12) ring motif. The molecules are further linked by C—H⋯π interactions between the thiadiazole rings and the methyl groups of the acetate units.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of bis(benzoato-κ2O,O')[bis(pyridin-2-yl-κN)amine]nickel(II)

A new mononuclear NiII complex with bis(pyridin-2-yl)amine (dpyam) and benzoate (benz), [Ni(C7H5O2)2(C10H9N3)], crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c. The NiII ion adopts a cis-distorted octahedral geometry with an [NiN2O4] chromophore. In the crystal, the complex molecules are linked together into a one-dimensional chain by symmetry-related π–π stacking interactions [centroid-to-centroid distance = 3.7257 (17) Å], along with N—H⋯O and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The crystal packing is further stabilized by C—H⋯π interactions, which were investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of bis[butyltris(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)borato]iron(II)

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Fe(C13H18BN6)2], contains two half independent complex molecules. In each complex, the FeII atom is located on an inversion center and is surrounded by two scorpionate ligand butyltris(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)borate molecules that coordinate to the iron(II) ion through the N atoms of the pyrazole groups. The two independent complex molecules differ essentially in the conformation of the butyl substituents. In the crystal, the complex molecules are linked by a series of C—H⋯π interactions, which generate a supramolecular three-dimensional structure. At 120 K, the average Fe—N bond distance is 1.969 Å, indicating the low-spin state of the iron(II) atom, which does not change upon heating, as demonstrated by high-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Crystal structure of catena-poly[[[bis(3-oxo-1,3-diphenylprop-1-enolato-κ2O,O')zinc(II)]-μ2-tris[4-(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl]amine-κ2N:N'] tetrahydrofuran monosolvate]

The reaction of bis(3-oxo-1,3-diphenylprop-1-enolato-κ2O,O')zinc(II), [Zn(dbm)2], with tris[4-(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl]amine (T3PyA) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) afforded the title crystalline coordination polymer, {[Zn(C15H11O2)2(C33H24N4)]·C4H8O}n. The asymmetric unit contains two independent halves of Zn(dbm)2, one T3PyA and one THF. Each ZnII atom is located on an inversion centre and adopts an elongated octahedral coordination geometry, ligated by four O atoms of two dbm ligands in equatorial positions and by two N atoms of pyridine moieties from two different bridging T3PyA ligands in axial positions. The crystal packing shows a one-dimensional polymer chain in which the two pyridyl groups of the T3PyA ligand bridge two independent Zn atoms of Zn(dbm)2. In the crystal, the coordination polymer chains are linked via C—H⋯π interactions into a sheet structure parallel to (010). The sheets are cross-linked via further C—H⋯π interactions into a three-dimensional network. The solvate THF molecule shows disorder over two sets of atomic sites having occupancies of 0.631 (7) and 0.369 (7).

In the title compound, [Cd(NO3)2(C13H11N3)2], the CdII atom lies on a twofold rotation axis and is coordinated by four N atoms and two O atoms, provided by two bidentate 2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)aniline ligands, and two nitrato O atoms, forming a distorted octahedral geometry [range of bond angles around the Cd atom = 73.82 (2)–106.95 (8)°]. In the ligand, the dihedral angle between the aniline ring and the benzimidazole ring system is 30.43 (7)°. The discrete complex molecule is stabilized by an intramolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bond. In the crystal, intermolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the molecules, forming a three-dimensional network.
