Social Costs of Morbidity Impacts of Air Pollution - Environment Working Paper

Outdoor air pollution is a major determinant of health worldwide. The objective of this paper is to inform the development of improved estimates of the social costs of human morbidity impacts resulting from outdoor air pollution in two components; namely to develop a core set of pollutant-health end-points to be covered when estimating the costs of morbidity, and to review current estimates of the cost of morbidity from air pollution.

[1–9-NαC]-Linusorb B3 (Cyclolinopeptide A) dimethyl sulfoxide monosolvate

Crystals of the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvate of [1–9-NαC]-linusorb B3 (Cyclolinopeptide A; CLP-A; C57H84N9O9·C2H6OS), a cyclic polypeptide were obtained following peptide extraction and purification from flaxseed oil. There are four intramolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. In the crystal, the molecules are linked in chains along the a axis by N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Each DMSO O atom accepts a hydrogen bond from an NH group at the Phe6 location in the CLP-A molecule.

Crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface and frontier molecular orbital analysis of 10-benzyl-9-(3-ethoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-3,4,6,7,9,10-hexahydroacridine-1,8(2H,5H)-dione

In the fused ring system of the title compound, C32H37NO4, the central dihydropyridine ring adopts a flattened boat conformation, the mean and maximum deviations of the dihydropyridine ring being 0.1429 (2) and 0.2621 (2) Å, respectively. The two cyclohexenone rings adopt envelope conformations with the tetrasubstituted C atoms as flap atoms. The benzene and phenyl rings form dihedral angles of 85.81 (2) and 88.90 (2)°, respectively, with the mean plane of the dihydropyridine ring. In the crystal, molecules are linked via an O—H⋯O hydrogen bond, forming a helical chain along the b-axis direction. A Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates that the most important contributions to the crystal packing are from H⋯H (65.2%), O⋯H/H⋯O (18.8%) and C⋯H/H⋯C (13.9%) contacts. Quantum chemical calculations for the frontier molecular orbitals were undertake to determine the chemical reactivity of the title compound.

Spin resolved electron density study of YTiO3 in its ferromagnetic phase: signature of orbital ordering

The present work reports on the charge and spin density modelling of YTiO3 in its ferromagnetic state (TC = 27 K). Accurate polarized neutron diffraction and high-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments were carried out on a single crystal at the ORPHÉE reactor (LLB) and SPRING8 synchrotron source. The experimental data are modelled by the spin resolved pseudo-atomic multipolar model (Deutsch et al., 2012). The refinement strategy is discussed and the result of this electron density modelling is compared with that from XRD measured at 100 K and with density functional theory calculations. The results show that the spin and charge densities around the Ti atom have lobes directed away from the O atoms, confirming the filling of the t2g orbitals of the Ti atom. The dxy orbital is less populated than dxz and dyz, which is a sign of a partial lift of degeneracy of the t2g orbitals. This study confirms the orbital ordering at low temperature (20 K), which is already present in the paramagnetic state above the ferromagnetic transition (100 K).

At 1,500,000 mph, twin stars in the constellation Cancer win speediest orbit award

The stars move quickly because they are very close to each other, separated by only about one-fourth the distance from the Earth to the Moon. As a result, they share strong gravitational forces. They were once farther apart but have spiraled closer together over time. Billions of years from now, they will crash together and merge.
