Today Otherlab, a sort of incubator/skunkworks, unveiled this aluminum-framed Lightfoot scooter.

It's got a 48-volt, 1.1kWh battery that provides up to 37 miles (60 km) of range, and which can be charged at a standard wall socket. But as you've undoubtedly noticed, the scooter has rather a lot of solar panels. Otherlab says you can use the sun to get up to 18 miles (28 km) of additional range. "Each hour of sunbathing recharges Lightfoot with 3 miles of solar-powered freedom," the firm writes.

I can't imagine why they've not photographed this, but the Lightfoot reportedly sports a lockable storage compartment that can hold "more than 1.5 cubic feet (45.2 liters)–comparable in size to a carry-on suitcase," Otherlab writes. "This compartment can comfortably fit up to 33 lbs. (15kg) of cargo, enough space for three large grocery bags, a work bag, a helmet or anything else you need to stash on your travels. Its weatherproof design and sturdy lock protect your stuff from prying eyes and the elements, ensuring your belongings arrive as safely as you do."

The Lightfoot is retailing for $4,995, and is expected to ship in January.

The right photo effect can transform an ordinary image into a work of art. Adjustments to lighting, color balance, and texture help you create the perfect mood for your project.

If you own an AirPort base station, you can use the Timed Access feature to control the days and times when users access the Internet. This could come in handy in a variety of situations. For example, if you own a cafe and provide free wi-fi access, you can configure the AirPort to block all access to the Internet when your business is closed. And if you have children, you can set time limits for specific devices in your home.

There are two ways to use the timed access feature. You can create a default allow policy to allow all devices to access the Internet at any time, and then specify custom schedules for specific devices. Or you can create a default deny policy to prevent all devices from accessing the Internet according the schedule you specify, and then exempt specific devices by creating custom schedules.

Here's how to control AirPort network access with time limits:

1. Open the AirPort Utility application. (It's in Applications → Utilities.) The window shown below appears.
   
   
2. Click the AirPort Extreme's icon. The status pop-up window appears.
   
   
3. Click Edit. The settings window appears.
   
   
4. Select the Network tab. The window shown below appears.
   
   
5. Select the Enable Access Control checkbox.
   
   
6. Click Timed Access Control. The window shown below appears.
   
   
7. Select the Unlimited (default) option. By default, this allows all of the devices connected to your AirPort to access the Internet all day, every day, but you can change this to block Internet access for all devices (except the ones you specify later) during the times you set.
   
   
8. If you'd like to limit the days and times that a specific device can access the Internet, click the + button under the Wireless Clients field. The window shown below appears.
   
   
9. Enter a name for the device in the Description field.
   
   
10. Enter the device's MAC address in the MAC Address field. You can use the following tutorials to find the device's MAC address.

    • How to Find Your iPad's MAC Address
    • How to Find Your iPhone's MAC Address
    
    
11. Use the + button under the Wireless Access Times field to create a schedule for this device's Internet access.
    
    
12. Once you've added all of your devices and customized the schedules, click Save.
    
    
13. Click Update. The AirPort will restart to apply the changes.

Congratulations! You have successfully set time limits for the devices connecting to your AirPort network. The schedule you created is effective immediately.

Mr Nisen has a long association with Scotland. From 1987 through 1993 Mr Nisen was President and CEO of OWL International, a joint U.S./Scottish company, where he directed a turn-around of the company, managed its growth with sales exceeding $10MM, sold it and successfully transitioned all operations to Matsushita Electronics Industrial. Mr Nisen also has held management positions at Lotus Development Corp. and Harvard University's Computer Graphics Laboratory. Nisen also serves on the board of directors for several technology companies. William gave the opening keynote plenary talk on day 2 on Knowledge Based Web Sites: A Preliminary Investigation.

Tom Franklin runs Franklin Consulting which offers consultancy services in educational technology. His particular interests are in portals, educational technology standards and VLEs and MLEs. He is technical advisor to the Higher Education Academy's Connects portal, where his work has included the selection and definition of appropriate standards and developing appropriate techniques for developing the channels in Web sites and portals. Franklin gave a plenary talk on "There Is No Such Thing As A Silver Bullet: CMS And Portals Will Not Solve Your Problems!" and facilitated a workshop session on "Embedding Third Party Services in Web Sites and Portals - From Links to WSRP the Pros and Cons". Mike Ellis has just emerged from 7 years working as Head of Web for the National Museum of Science and Industry, UK, which comprises the Science Museum in London, Media Museum in Bradford and Railway Museum in York. Mike is now working for a Bath-based company called Eduserv who are a not for profit IT services group. Mike's interests are in user generated content, Web 2.0, ubiquitous computing and innovation and how to lever these for maximum benefit in cultural institutions. Mike facilitated a workshop on "Mashups: More than Maps".

Alison Wildish is Head of Web Services at Edge Hill University where, for the past seven years, she has led a team responsible for the development of the corporate Web site(s), intranet sites and Web services. Prior to joining Edge Hill, Alison was developing Web applications in the commercial sector. Alison has an active interest in the opportunities offered by personalisation and user owned technologies and gave a plenary talk on "Let the Students do the Talking...."
