Abelardo Morell was born in Havana, Cuba in 1948. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1962. Morell received his undergraduate degree in 1977 from Bowdoin College and an MFA from The Yale University School of Art in 1981. In 1997 he received an honorary degree from Bowdoin College.

His publications include a photographic illustration of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1998) by Dutton Children’s Books, A Camera in a Room (1995) by Smithsonian Press, A Book of Books (2002) and Camera Obscura (2004) by Bulfinch Press and Abelardo Morell (2005), published by Phaidon Press. Recent publications include a limited edition book by The Museum of Modern Art in New York of his Cliché Verre images with a text by Oliver Sacks.

His work has been collected and shown in many galleries, institutions and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York, The Chicago Art Institute, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Houston Museum of Art, The Boston Museum of Fine Art, The Victoria & Albert Museum and over seventy other museums in the United States and abroad. A retrospective of his work organized jointly by the Art Institute of Chicago, The Getty in Los Angeles and The High Museum in Atlanta closed in May 2014 after a year of travel. Abelardo will be having his first show at the Edwynn Houk Gallery in New York opening October 23, 2014 and will run until December 20, 2014 featuring a selection of new pictures.

Patrick Lauke currently works as Web Editor for the University of Salford, where he heads a small central Web team. In 2003 he implemented one of the first Web standards based XHTML/CSS driven UK university sites. He has been engaged in the discourse on accessibility since early 2001, regularly contributing to a variety of Web development and accessibility related mailing lists and forums. He also takes an active role in the running of Accessify.com, moderates the Accessify forum, and is co-lead of the Web Standards Project Accessibility Task Force (WaSP ATF), which he joined in June 2005. An outspoken accessibility and standards advocate, Patrick favours a pragmatic hands-on approach to Web accessibility over purely theoretical, high-level discussions. "I'm an idealist by nature, but a pragmatist by trade. I'd never class myself as an expert and I certainly don't have all the answers...I'm just an opinionated guy eager to find real world solutions 'where the rubber meets the road'." Published works include a chapter in Web Accessibility: Web Standards and Regulatory Compliance, released by Friends of Ed in 2006. In his spare time, Patrick pursues his passion for photography and runs a small Web/design consultancy. Claire Gibbons is the Web Officer for the University of Bradford, working within the department of Marketing and Communications. Claire is responsible for the external face of the University's web presence and works closely with departments and Schools to ensure consistency of University brand and message as well as compliance with standards and legislation, such as SENDA. Claire is also studying for the Chartered Management Institute Diploma in Management - which has sparked her current (and slightly obsessive) interest in organisational culture. Claire is also working on the new University visual identity roll-out for the University of Bradford and the Content Management System Project. Claire facilitated a workshop session on "People, Processes and Projects - How the Culture of an Organisation can Impact on Technical System Implementation" with Russell Allen.

John Slater, University of Kent at Canterbury, gave a talk entitled "Who will rid me of this troublesome beast".

Lawrie Phipps is an environmental science graduate turned learning technologist. He worked on the development of Web-based resources, computer simulations and 'virtual' fieldwork for several years before running the JISC-funded TechDis Service, which looks at all aspects of Technology and Disabilities in the further and higher education sectors. Lawrie maintains a research interest in virtual lab and fieldwork in the sciences. The title of Lawrie's talk is "Legislation, Disabilities and Educational Web Sites".

Derek Law is the Librarian and Head of Information Resources Directorate at the University of Strathclyde, Professor in the Department of Computing and Head of the Centre for Digital Library Research, University of Strathclyde. He has worked in several British universities since 1970 and have published over 150 book chapters, articles and conference papers since then, some of them republished in seven other languages. Most of his work has been to do with the development of networked resources in higher education and with the creation of national information policy. Recently I have worked on the use of wireless technology in developing new methods of teaching and learning. Derek was awarded the Barnard prize for contributions to Medical Informatics in 1993, Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1999 and was awarded an honorary degree by the Sorbonne in 2000. Derek gave the opening keynote plenary talk.

Duncan Ireland has been in the Internet Officer role at the University of Strathclyde since late 2002. His time is largely taken up with rolling out the T4 Sitemanager CMS (see http://www.strath.ac.uk/terminalfour/). Before arriving in academia, Duncan could be found at Scottish Amicable (latterly Prudential) where he worked on a project to implement the MediaSurface CMS. Prior to that he worked for BAE Systems where he saw the introduction of standard desktops, internet access and an Intranet. His leisure time is largely spent learning how to duck(!) while training with Caledonian Muay Thai in Glasgow (see http://www.caledonianmuaythai.co.uk/) - he refutes any suggestion that this training was deliberately undertaken to bring more folk round to his way of thinking in meetings. Professor Mark Clark became the Director of Information Systems at The Victoria University of Manchester in September 2001 and his role encompasses responsibilities for all University IS as well as providing hosting for the Research Council's National Supercomputing Service, CSAR, and the JISC's National Data Services incorporating MIMAS, as well as many other services. With the merger of the old Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST, Mark was appointed as Director of Information Systems, and has overseen the restructuring of computing support for the new institution, The University of Manchester, incorporated in October 2004. Previously Mark held the post of Director of Academic Information Systems at the University of Salford for six years (a converged service where he had responsibility for both Library and Computing). Prior to that he was Director of Computing at the University of Essex where he also held a Senior Lectureship in the Department of Electrical Systems Engineering, researching and teaching in the area of networks and computing systems. Mark holds a BSc and MSc in Electrical Engineering (Digital Systems and Telecommunications), and his PhD subject was speech coding using digital adaptive delta modulation. Mark was invited to join the UKERNA Board as HEFCE nominated Director; he also is the Chair of Internet Facilitators Ltd and of Net North West Ltd. Mark gave a plenary talk on "Challenges at The University of Manchester arising from Project UNITY".

Derek Law has worked in several British universities and published and spoken at conferences extensively. Most of his work has been to do with the development of networked resources in higher education and with the creation of national information policy. This has been combined with an active professional life in professional organisations related to librarianship and computing. A committed internationalist he has been involved in projects and research in over forty countries. He was awarded the Barnard prize for contributions to Medical Informatics in 1993, Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1999, an honorary degree by the Sorbonne in 2000, the IFLA medal in 2003, Honorary Fellowship of CILIP in 2004 and was an OCLC Distinguished Scholar in 2006. He is currently Chair of the new JISC Services Management Company and Programme Consultant for the Libraries of the Future Horizon Scan. Derek gave a plenary talk entitled "Headlights on Dark Roads".

Dave Flanders is a programme manager at JISC where he works as part of the Information Environment team. Previously he has worked at the University of London and British Library in building cutting edge technologies specific to teachers, researchers, curators, librarians, administrators and learners. His experience working as developer, usability expert and manager provides a unique perspective on how innovation occurs across teams in the modern Web Environment. David will be talking on innovation and why it is essential (especially in times of recession) for institutions to take risks. Dave gave a video presentation of a plenary talk entitled "Agile Prototyping in Academia".

Mike Nolan is Head of Web Services at Edge Hill University where he is responsible for development of external Web sites and a portal service for staff and students. Michael regularly posts about HE web development topics on the Edge Hill Web Services blog and is a regular participant (and hence speaker!) at BarCamps around the country. Mike chaired the final morning session and facilitated the Developer's Lounge Show and Tell session.

James Lappin is a records management consultant and trainer. He writes on records management topics for his blog Thinking Records. James is the co-author of Northumbria University's 'Investigation into the use of SharePoint in UK Higher Education Institutions' published in January 2010. He is an accredited trainer for the European Commission, for whom he provides records management training. James obtained his MA in Archives and Records Management at UCL in 1994, after which he held records management roles at The National Archives, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, and the Wellcome Trust. He worked as a consultant and trainer for TFPL between 2004 and 2008, before founding his company Thinking Records, at the start of 2009. James will be giving a plenary talk entitled "The impact of SharePoint in Higher Education" with Peter Gilbert, part of the Doing the Day Job session.

Nicholas Watson is the media account manager for Corporate Projects for Learning and Teaching Solutions (LTS) - the media production arm of the Open University (OU). He is responsible for production of Open Educational Resources such as OpenLearn, iTunes U and YouTube. Fonterra has opened a new A$6 million ricotta manufacturing plant in north central Victoria that will deliver global opportunities for the Victorian dairy industry. Built with $250,000 grant from the Victorian Government, the Perfect Italiano Ricotta project demonstrates Fonterra’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a presence in northern Victoria and boosts the company’s Stanhope workforce to 126.

Malaria is a devastating disease, affecting 200 million people worldwide and causing more than 600 000 deaths each year. In the past decade, great inroads have been made in reducing the number of infections, primarily through the implementation of insecticide-laced bed nets, and also reducing the death rate with combination therapies. However the emergence of drug-resistant malaria is rendering these therapies less effective, and there is an urgent need to develop novel therapies to cure malaria.

The expression of interest for the Ballarat West Employment Zone (BWEZ) has officially opened. BWEZ is the Ballarat region’s engine room for jobs and economic growth over the next 20 years. Located just over an hour north-west from the Melbourne city centre, Ballarat has fantastic connections to road, rail, ports and airports and the region is home to a large, skilled and stable workforce. With an increasing population of 100,000, Ballarat is one of the largest inland cities in Australia and serves as a key access point to the other regional centres in Northern and Western Victoria.

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), in collaboration with NICTA (National ICT Australia) have announced the opening of a joint data analytics lab in Victoria. The lab will be based at RMIT University’s School of Computer Science & Information (CSIT) in Melbourne. NICTA is Australia’s largest ICT organisation, and its Machine Learning Research Group has been independently rated amongst the top five groups of its kind in the world. In a collaboration valued at over A$1 million, NICTA will combine its expertise with RMIT University’s CSIT, which is widely recognised as a leader in data and information management.

Global pharmaceutical company Janssen-Cilag, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has signed a three-year research collaboration agreement with Melbourne’s Monash University. The collaboration will focus on ground-breaking research at Monash University to develop potential new medicines to treat autoimmune diseases and disorders .

The global data centre and software giant, Equinix, has recently opened a new state-of-the-art data centre in Melbourne, as part of its expansion plans throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The centre, which is strategically located in Port Melbourne, about 2.5 kilometres from the Central Business District, will help to meet the growing regional demand for premium data centre services, and comes amidst strong growth in Australia and Victoria’s IT markets. Equinix has invested A$60 million in the centre, known as ME1, and early reports indicate an successful launch.

One of the leading Belgian violinists, JOLENTE De MAEYER, has brought her virtuosity and passionate interpretations to diverse global audiences. She is recognized as an exceptionally gifted artist, reflected in the numerous awards and effusive reviews she has received for both her live performances and recordings.

Prizewinner of several international competitions in Portugal (Cardona Competition), Russia (Liana Issakadze Competition) and London (Benjamin Britten Competition), the international career of Jolente started with a successful participation at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. Performances with all major Belgian orchestras and concert tours in Europe and the United States followed. She made her debut in Florida, Vermont, California, Washington DC and Canada in 2017. This was followed by an extensive tour in South Africa. Future engagements include concert tours in Europe, Canada, United States and China.

Her recordings include concerti by Saint-Saëns and Vieuxtemps with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège with Christian Arming, awarded an ‘Editors Choice’ from Diapason, and the CD *Kreutzer Sonata* with duo partner Nikolaas Kende, awarded a ‘Gold Label’ from Klassiek Centraal.

After an invitation from Yehudi Menuhin when she was 14 years old, Jolente studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School near London. She continued her studies in London, Berlin and Waterloo where she graduated in the class of Augustin Dumay in 2013.

Since 2018 Jolente is professor violin at the Conservatory of Tilburg, the Netherlands and since 2021 also at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. Jolente has given masterclasses in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Texas and California.

NIKOLAAS KENDE has been praised for his poetic playing and honest, passionate musicality. Critics have honored his sensitive and visionary musicianship and his flawless skills always serving the music. Both as soloist and chamber musician he is a highly demanded pianist on international concert stages.

A winner of several competitions, including the Cantabile, EPTA, Vriendenkrans Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Tenuto competitions, Nikolaas started performing in all major halls in Belgium and the Netherlands. Highlights included the performances of the piano concertos by Brahms, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann and Bartok with Brussels Philharmonic, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, National Radio Orchestra Romania, among others.

After a concert at the Festival de Dansa y Musica Granada in 2019 *Ideal* wrote: "This promising pianist caresses the keyboard, expressive with colors and tender with the melody and all the degrees of affection that typify the romantic soul."

Besides being a regular guest at the Festival of Flanders, he has also performed at festivals in Italy (Ravello, Rome, Bari), France (Menton, Montpellier, Vexin), Portugal (Coimbra), Germany (Görlitz, Munich, Bad Berleburg) , Austria (Salzburg), Ireland (Westport), UK (Cotswolds), Czech Republic (Prague), Spain (Zaragoza, Madrid).

Nikolaas made his debut in America in 2009 with the 1st piano concerto of Brahms. This debut was well received in the press, “One could almost imagine a young Brahms at the keyboard doing precisely the same thing: more intent on communicating his piece than dazzling listeners with his performance.” Since then he has returned to America annually and has toured in Texas (Houston, Austin, San Antonio), California (San Francisco, Fresno, LA) and Vermont, Florida, California, Texas, Washington DC and New York. In 2019 amongst others his debut for the 'Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts' in Chicago. He also performed in the Netherlands Antilles, Canada and South Africa, where several tours followed.

In 2018 he made his debut in China with recitals in Bejijng, Harbin, Chongqing and Chengdu. Concerts in Shanghai, Xi'An, Yangzhou and Guangzhou followed in 2019. Also for the next seasons, concerts are planned in North America, Canada, South Africa and China.

As a chamber music partner he was a member of the Narziss und Goldmund trio and the Rubens Ensemble. His duo with violinist Jolente De Maeyer, which exists for almost 20 years, is often praised in the press for its exceptional synergy and harmony. The duo's debut CD *Kreutzer Sonata* was released by Warner and won a Golden Label from Klassiek Centraal for best chamber music album of 2016. De Standaard wrote about this: "You want to listen to this captivating recital album again immediately after the last track." In 2020 their next CD *Remains* was released by Evil Penguin Records.

Nikolaas studied in Antwerp with his parents, Heidi Hendrickx and Levente Kende, in Amsterdam with Jan Wijn and in Munich and Fiesole with Elisso Virsaladze. In addition he studied with such artists as Murray Perahia, Aldo Ciccolini and Radu Lupu.

In 2015, Nikolaas was appointed professor of piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. He has given masterclasses in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Texas, California and China.

This month, we are reading *The Palace of Eros* by Caro De Robertis. A recent release, the novel was featured in *Electric Literature*’s “65 Queer Books You Need to Read in Summer 2024.” The Palace of Eros reimagines the Greek myth of Psyche and Eros through a feminist and queer lens. Psyche—pursued by many but longing for freedom—is tied to a rock as a sacrifice to appease Aphrodite. But rather than meeting destruction, she is saved by the nonbinary deity of desire Eros, who whisks her away to a hidden palace safe from the eyes and authority of Olympus. As Psyche and Eros fall in love, their relationship is tested by the complexities of secrecy, freedom, and desire—and met with transformative consequences.

Join us in Room 125 of Newberry Hall for an evening of community and conversation led by Gabriel Key, a PhD candidate in the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology. Light refreshments will be served.

Fernando Laposse specializes in transforming humble natural materials into refined design pieces. He has worked extensively with overlooked plant fibers such as sisal, loofah, and corn leaves. Laposse’s works are the result of extensive research which culminates in objects of “endemic design” where materials and their historical and cultural ties to a particular location and its people take center stage. He often works with indigenous communities in his native Mexico to create local employment opportunities and raise awareness about the challenges they face in a globalized world.
Laposse’s projects are informative and educational and touch on topics such as sustainability, the loss of biodiversity, community dissolution, migration, and the negative impacts of global trade in local agriculture and food culture. He does so by documenting the issues and announcing possible resolutions through the transformative power of design.
Laposse’s projects have been exhibited in the Triennale di Milano, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, The Design Museum in London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the World Economic Forum, among others. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Design Museum Gent, Le centre national des arts plastiques, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Laposse studied at Central Saint Martins in London as a product designer and currently lives and works in Mexico City.

In this talk, I will explore the emergent physics resulting from the complex interaction between real-space and momentum-space topology in strongly correlated quantum materials, with a particular focus on skyrmions. Using quantum Hall and quantum spin Hall insulators as key examples, I will explain the mechanisms behind skyrmion formation through electron doping in these correlated and gapped topological systems. We provide a detailed analysis of the phase diagrams and the formation of skyrmion lattices within the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model, supported by calculations from both the unrestricted real-space Hartree-Fock and density matrix renormalization group methods. In these systems, the doped electron and skyrmion form a composite object whose density is governed by the doped electron density. This electron-skyrmion bound state is stabilized by the coupling between the orbital magnetization of the Chern band and the emergent magnetic flux generated by the skyrmion. Moreover, we find that doping induces quantum anomalous Hall crystals, which exhibit quantized Hall conductance and broken translational symmetry. Our theory offers an intrinsic mechanism for the experimentally observed robust quantum anomalous Hall insulator over an extended doping range near a filling factor of ν = 1 in twisted transition metal moiré superlattices.

Short-bio:
Shizeng Lin completed his Ph.D. at the National Institute for Materials Science and the University of Tsukuba in Japan. After earning his Ph.D., he joined Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 2011, initially as a postdoctoral researcher in the Theoretical Division. In 2014, he was appointed as a scientist at LANL. He is also currently affiliated with the Center for Integrated Nanotechnology at LANL, one of the five Nanoscale Science Research Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Lin’s research primarily focuses on theoretical studies of novel quantum materials, with a particular emphasis on systems characterized by correlation and topology. He received the LANL Laboratory-Directed Research and Development Program Early Career Award in 2017 and the LANL Fellows Prize for Outstanding Research in 2024.

About the speaker: Courtney Paquette is an assistant professor at McGill University and a CIFAR Canada AI chair, MILA. She was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship in Computer Science in 2024. Paquette’s research broadly focuses on designing and analyzing algorithms for large-scale optimization problems, motivated by applications in data science. She is also interested in scaling limits of stochastic learning algorithms. She received her PhD from the mathematics department at the University of Washington (2017), held postdoctoral positions at Lehigh University (2017-2018) and the University of Waterloo (NSF postdoctoral fellowship, 2018-2019), and works 20% as a research scientist at Google DeepMind, Montreal.


Abstract: Given the massive scale of modern ML models, we now only get a single shot to train them effectively. This restricts our ability to test multiple architectures and hyper-parameter configurations. Instead, we need to understand how these models scale, allowing us to experiment with smaller problems and then apply those insights to larger-scale models. In this talk, I will present a framework for analyzing scaling laws in stochastic learning algorithms using a power-law random features model, leveraging high-dimensional probability and random matrix theory. I will then use this scaling law to address the compute-optimal question: How should we choose model size and hyper-parameters to achieve the best possible performance in the most compute-efficient manner?

Adam Lenhart performs a 30 minute recital on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons. The program celebrates the life, legacy & music of Selena Quintanilla Pérez (1971-1995) as part of Lenhart's American Women Concert Series.

Thirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.
