Long Term Life Tips: Top 5 Regrets People Make on their Deathbed:

An astonishing “top 5 list” blog comes to us via longtermtips and I’m pleased to say I’m pretty sure I won’t have any of these regrets when my time inevitably comes.

By Bronnie Ware (who worked for years nursing the dying)

For many years I worked in palliative care. My patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. I was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives.

SOUNDLOCATIONS - THE TIME FOR A NEW MUSICAL PATH HAS COME TO GO FORWARD TOGETHER

Germany, end of 2013: dark clouds hanging over the heads of analog musicians. A popular music magazine found out that the number of rehearsal rooms and venues for young bands is significantly decreased. Especially the situation for rehearsal rooms is dramatically: too less, too expensive, too dirty and hard to reach. But in cultivated countries there should be room for many different types of culture not only mainstream ...

Athabasca oil sands

The Athabasca oil sands (also called the Athabasca tar sands or Alberta tar sands) are large deposits of bitumen or extremely heavy crude oil, located in northeastern Alberta, Canada – roughly centred on the boomtown of Fort McMurray. These oil sands, hosted primarily in the McMurray Formation, consist of a mixture of crude bitumen (a semi-solid form of crude oil), silica sand, clay minerals, and water. The Athabasca deposit is the largest known reservoir of crude bitumen in the world and the largest of three major oil sands deposits in Alberta, along with the nearby Peace River and Cold Lake deposits (the latter stretching into Saskatchewan).

Alaska - Breath of Fresh Air

Tags:

Alaska is also one of my favorites. During the summer months, when it never got dark outside, we would party at a night club until 2 am and immediately change into our fishing clothes. We would combat fish for salmon until 6 am almost every weekend. You may be wondering what's combat fishing?

Combat fishing is when everyone on the bank stands 12" apart and consistently cast out for the salmon. Once a person catches a salmon and begins to walk upstream, everyone yells "Fish On". This is when everyone without a fish moves away from the edge of the bank to allow the person to reel in their fish. It's combat fishing because everyone is trying to catch a fish at the same time and are standing really close to one another.

Talking about being spooked out. A baby bear cub was found in our dumpster at my apartment building. Have you ever been in the near vicinity of a bear?? Bears have a very distinct smell. It's a very sour and disgusting smell. Just to think they are still capable of being able to smell someone else. :o)

Another time, a couple of friends and I were hiking in Alaska, and guess what? We smelled that sour smell and I swore that I would never go hiking again. I just didn't want to see us have a scene from one of the horror movies where the dummies go out in the woods asking for trouble. You know the types. The ones that think they can out run a bear. Anyway, here's a lovely picture of a momma and her baby cub. They're real cute on a poster, glad I didn't see them in person. I guess you figured we didn't fish that day.

Just remember, if you move to Alaska, it doesn't get dark in the summer. So, if you have plans of leaving your girlfriend's house at 4 am., someone will be certain to see you. Remember how the group TLC sang about Creepin? No one Creeps in Alaska. :o) And you're definitely going to smell a bear if it's nearby. :o)

In closing, here's a picture for your thoughts from Alaska.

How to Unshrink Clothes (Wool Sweather, etc)

Here is an article which tells you exactly how to unshrink wool.

When wool gets wet and warm, the fibres in the wool lock themselves together and don't want to let go, resulting in shrinkage (you can get wool warm or wet, but not both), which kind of makes washing wool garments a dangerous business.
To un-shrink the wool, soak the garment in warm water with a mild wool friendly soap for about 10 minutes. This unlocks the fibres in the wool. Then lay the garment out on some towels in a cool place. Stretch the garment out to its original dimensions. The stretching pulls the unlocked wool fibres away from each other. Once this is done relax and allow your wool garment to dry. The absence of heat from the drying process allows the wool fibres to set in place without locking together and shrinking the garment again.

Podcasting Your Research paves a pathway to a new audience

Academia and podcasting have a similar problem: unless you’re involved in them, they seem incredibly intimidating to get into. With academia that is mostly true; a number of economic, systemic, and personal reasons make it inaccessible for a lot of people. With podcasts, however, that is not the case — to the same extent. If you have access to a recording device, editing software, and an internet connection, that is all you need to share your work with the digital world.

Animal Health Official Respond to First Detection of High Path Avian Influenza in a Pig

Farmscape for November 7, 2024

Animal health officials are responding to the first case of a pig in the United States testing positive for high path H5N1 avian influenza.
On October 30th USDA confirmed that the first detection in a pig of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza had occurred on a small backyard mixed farm in Oregon that housed poultry, swine, sheep and goats.
Swine Health Information Center Executive Director Dr. Megan Niederwerder notes the investigation was triggered when birds on the farm started showing clinical signs of infection.

Quote-Dr. Megan Niederwerder-Swine Health Information Center:
We know that H5N1 is a specific highly pathogenic avian influenza strain that has really increased with regards to circulation over the last two years.
This is primarily maintained in migratory waterfowl but the virus has spilled over into other mammalian species such as seals and sea lions as well as domestic livestock including dairy cattle, first detected in March of 2024 and now in the first pig in October of 2024.
These pigs that were housed on this farm, there were five pigs, none of these animals were intended for the commercial food supply.
Pork continues to be safe for consumption.
There is no concern about the safety of the nation's pork supply as a result of this finding.
The other aspect of this detection is that none of the pigs that were housed on the operation, including the one that was found to be infected, had any clinical signs.
They were completely healthy so this could indicate a low pathogenicity in pigs.
We're still learning about that.
Only a single pig has been shown to be infected so there's a lot to learn about the potential risk to the swine industry.

Dr. Niederwerder encourages pork producers to review their biosecurity procedures focussing on areas where workers or equipment may be exposed to both dairy farms and pig farms or poultry farms and pig farms.
To keep up to date on the situation visit swinehealth.org.

A More Direct Path!

The Getting Real book really got me thinking. For their online applications, their first goal is to get their core functionality working and make it available ASAP. Other features and enhancements can be added later.

With Behold, I managed to get the alpha up and available over two years ago. I've been working since then to ensure that it can display everything from the GEDCOM, and I've been fiddling to get the data structures right and making decisions on how everything is best displayed. That was all very important work and necessary.

But at the same time, I've been also doing a lot of tweaking and fine details. I've added a lot of features that are not core to the working of Behold. I've probably expended over two thirds of my time since the initial alpha release doing non-essentials.

As I look at my current Future Plans list, I see that trend continuing. I've been diligent in adding anything I think is worthwhile doing into my Future Plans, and placing it at the appropriate version where similar work is being done. But now I see what that did is to obscure my path to version 2 with more non-essentials and very much extending my time towards that important release.

Behold to me will not be a full program until I get to Version 2. It must have editing capability before it becomes the necessary program I expect it to be. So obviously what I must start doing is to set my path to get there more directly, and make all the other nice-to-have goodies wait until then. So tonight, I'm going to go through my To Dos that are in my Future Plans, and reorganize them, and start off with just what's necessary to get to Version 1.0 (first release), Version 1.5 (Saving GEDCOMs) and Version 2.0 (Editing). The rest will then follow.

Tomorrow, I'll report here on my blog as to how that works out.
