B2: Web CMS and University Web Teams Part II - the Never Ending Story?

The University of Bradford Web CMS project began in October 2005 and by the time IWMW 2008 happens we will have purchased our Web CMS and have a new University Web Team in place (just!). "Crumbs - that's taken a long time," you may say! Well, yes - but we know that by the end of the project we will have a Web CMS that suits our organisational needs and is welcomed and accepted by the users, as well as a new resource to assist the University of Bradford in taking its Web presence forward - the University Web Team. So how did we do it? Following on from last year's IWMW 2007 session (People, Processes and Projects - How the Culture of an Organisation can Impact on Technical System Implementation) we will give some insight into why we think our project has continued to be successful - detailing the hurdles we met along the way and how we overcame them - and imparting the knowledge that we have learnt during the project which can help you take your organisation with you and enable you to implement a huge change management project successfully. Hint - it's all about the people! The session was facilitated by Claire Gibbons and Russell Allen, University of Bradford.

Stuart Smith, MIMAS considers that we live in a time in which a plethora of portable computing devices are available such as mobile phones, handheld computers, gaming devices and movie and music players. These devices offer powerful computing power, often on a par with desktop computers of only a few years ago. Additionally, they are increasingly have wireless connectivity to the Internet. These devices are in wide spread usage and are considered affordable by many students and academics. The array of portable computing power can be bewildering this session will look at options available and how they might used by institutions to increase the learning value for students.

Ed Bristow is the Technical Manager of the PKI Project within the Information Technology Services Group of the Australian Taxation Office. Ed has worked for the ATO for most of the last 12 years, moving from database to mainframe applications to his current role in electronic service delivery. Ed has spent periods working in the private sector and prior to finding his way into IT was a librarian with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library in Canberra.

The Contractual Basis of Incentive Compensation Re-Emphasized: Restricted Stock in Lieu of Cash Wages Can Be Forfeited By Resignation in California

In Schachter v. Citigroup, Inc.,1 the California Supreme Court rejected claims that an incentive plan that conditioned the earning of restricted stock based on continued service was unlawful where the employee voluntarily elected to participate in the plan, and the employee quit before the date on which the incentive was earned. The plan was lawful even though the incentive plan was funded from wages that the employee would have otherwise received in cash.

Atlanta Amends Anti-Discrimination Ordinance to Include Protections for Gender Expression and Criminal Histories

The City Council of Atlanta, Georgia recently passed an ordinance that amends its existing anti-discrimination law to include protection on the basis of “criminal history status” as well as “gender expression.”  The ordinance is effective immediately.

With regard to gender expression, the law simply amends existing law to include “gender expression” as an additional protected characteristic.

  • The city of Gainesville has passed a Fair Chance Hiring law governing an employer’s use and consideration of a job applicant’s criminal history in making employment decisions.

The Bar Has Been Lowered – Congress Further Relaxes Hiring Restrictions for Banking Personnel with Criminal Histories

  • FY 2023 National Defense Authorization Act loosens restrictions on hiring those with criminal records at FDIC-member banks and NCUA-insured credit unions.
  • Sections 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act and 205(d) of the Federal Credit Union Act should no longer be relied upon as a basis to automatically disqualify applicants convicted of certain offenses.

New Law Prohibits Florida Businesses from Requiring Vaccine Passport from Patrons and Customers

On May 3, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law SB 2006 (codified as Section 381.00316, Florida Statutes).  The law prevents business entities from requiring that patrons or customers provide documentation certifying COVID-19 vaccination or post-infection recovery to enter or obtain service from a business in Florida. It also prohibits educational institutions from requiring students or residents, and governmental entities from requiring persons, to provide vaccination passports or proof of post-infection recovery.
