When Your Great-Great-Great-Grandfather Is a Civil War Hero

Photographer Drew Gardner has a passion for history. His long-term project, “The Descendants,” (https://www.drewgardner.com/descendants)  wherein he recreates famous portraits of historical figures featuring their direct offspring, is his most visible expression of this interest. But like a lot of people who study history, Gardner has in recent years begun to contemplate more deeply the question of whose stories have been judged worthy of preservation, and whose have been allowed to fade into obscurity. That was how he decided to shift his specific focus to locating and photographing Black American descendants of Civil War veterans. You can take a look at Gardner’s photographs and read magazine editor Jennie Rothenberg Gritz’s exploration of their meaning here (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/descendants-black-civil-war-heroes-wear-heritage-pride-180983397/) . On the latest episode of the Smithsonian podcast “There’s More to That,” (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/podcast)  I speak with Janisse Flowers and her 9-year-son, Neikoye, who are descended from the Civil War drummer boy David Miles Moore Jr. After some reflection, Janisse and her husband decided to grant Gardner’s request to photograph Neikoye dressed in a replica of Moore’s Union Army uniform. Both Janisse and Neikoye share their surprise over how this experience made them more conscious of their heritage. I’m also joined by Gardner himself, who describes the challenges—and, he hopes, the potential benefits—of asking Black Americans to revisit one of the most painful chapters of America’s history by (almost) literally stepping into their ancestors’ shoes. You can learn more about Drew and his work at his website (https://www.drewgardner.com/) . Find prior episodes of our show here (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/podcast/) . How NASA Captured Asteroid Dust to Find the Origins of Life

Capturing a piece of an asteroid and bringing it to Earth is even more difficult than it is time-consuming. After four years in space, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx craft made a brief landing on the asteroid Bennu to collect samples of the ancient rock. Six months later, part of the spacecraft began its journey home to Earth, and earlier this fall, that sample collection canister landed, via parachute, in Utah. Scientists will be studying those samples of Bennu for decades in the hope of unlocking the mystery of how life on Earth began — but they’ve already learned enough to get them excited. In this episode, we speak with Linda Shiner, the former editor of Air & Space / Smithsonian magazine, about the challenges and triumphs of the OSIRIS-REx mission, and what scientists hope it will teach us about how life on Earth began. USB4 Interoperability with Thunderbolt™︎ 3 (TBT3) Systems

One of the key goals for USB4 is to retain compatibility with the existing ecosystem of USB3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt  products, and the resulting connection scales to the best mutual capability of the devices being connected. USB4 is designed to work with older versions of USB and Thunderbolt . USB4 Fabric support high throughput interconnects of 10 Gbps (for Gen 2) and 20 Gbps (for Gen 3) and supports Thunderbolt 3-compatible rates of 10.3125 Gbps (for Gen 2) and 20.625 Gbps (for Gen 3). It becomes very important to verify the Thunderbolt  backward compatibility with the designs. Though the support of USB4 Interoperability with Thunderbolt  3 (TBT3) is optional in USB4 host or USB4 peripheral device and required USB4 Hub and USB4 Based Dock but it is very essential to work in the existing ecosystem.

Few Main features of USB4 Interoperability with Thunderbolt  3 (TBT3) Systems

  • Support for Bi-Directional Pins & Retimers: TBT3 Active Cables can contain two bidirectional Re-timers which have the capability to send AT Responses on its RX channel. Router connected directly to such Retimer needs to support A Router that is connected directly to a bidirectional Re-timer shall support reception of Transactions on both TX and RX channels.

  • Bounce Mechanism: This feature is used by Router to access the Register Space of a Cable Re-timer that can only be accessed by its Link Partner.
  • Asymmetric Negotiation: The Router which connects with Cable Retimers needs to follow Asymmetric TxFFE in Phase 5 of Lane Initialization.
  • USB4 Link Transitions: In TBT3 mode, the configuration of two independent Single Lane Links can be used non-transient state or Single Lane Link just using the Lane1 Adapter.

Cadence has a mature USB4 Verification IP solution that can help in the verification of USB4 designs with TBT3. Cadence has taken an active part in the Cairo group that defined the USB4 specification and has created a comprehensive Verification IP that is being used by multiple members. If you plan to have a USB4-compatible design, you can reduce the risk of adopting new technology by using our proven and mature USB4 Verification IP. Please contact your Cadence local account team, for more details.

12 bodies recovered from Cameroon landslides

Yaounde, Cameroon — Workers have recovered 12 bodies following landslides that engulfed a road in the west of Cameroon, a regional official said Saturday, adding there is no hope of finding survivors.   State television CRTV reported the comments by the governor of Ouest region, Augustine Awa Fonka.   "In our opinion, there is no longer any possibility of finding survivors," he told the station.  Only 12 bodies had been recovered from the site of the disaster, the last of them on Saturday morning, he said.   Dozens more people are still missing, and the search for bodies is still continuing, he added.   Two landslides hit the Dschang cliff road Tuesday — the second as emergency workers were using heavy machinery to try to clear the road.   Vehicles hit included three coaches with around 20 seats each, five six-seater vehicles, and several motorbikes said Awa Fonka in an earlier statement.   Cameroon's roads are notoriously dangerous, with almost 3,000 deaths each year in accidents, or more than 10 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the latest figures from the World Health Organization, published in 2023.    In early September, a tractor-trailer carrying passengers plunged off a cliff road into a ravine near the town of Dschang, killing eight people and injuring 62 others, including eight children.
