ay Your Boss May Soon Track You At Work For Coronavirus Safety By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Fri, 08 May 2020 18:55:13 +0000 The last time you were in your office, who did you walk past in the lobby? Stand next to in the elevator? Chat with in the kitchen? You're not alone if you can't remember each of those encounters. But that is exactly the sort of information employers want to have on hand, in case an employee catches the coronavirus. Some companies that are preparing to welcome employees back to the office are planning to use technology to monitor their movements at work. While the technology may be more precise than human memory, it raises fears about greater surveillance at work — and whether employers would relinquish that power after the health crisis subsides. One company that has begun to use such tools is PwC, the big accounting and consulting firm. It has developed an app that tracks how close employees get to each other by noting their smartphones' Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals. The app allows the company to do contact tracing — the process of identifying people who may have been exposed to the Full Article

In a companywide meeting Thursday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said employees who needed to work in the office would be allowed to return in June or July with enhanced safety measures in place. The rest would likely continue working from home, a Google spokesperson told NPR. Google had originally told employees work-from-home protocols would be in place at least through June 1. Facebook also said it would allow most of its employees to work remotely through the end of 2020, according to media reports. ay Someone to design and implement a simple, attractive static web page (bay area, california) By jobs.metafilter.com Published On :: Mon, 27 Jan 2020 08:22:42 -0800 Forgive me for the following display of ignorance. I'm looking for someone to develop a simple and attractive static website. I'm agnostic about the development framework. The functionality needed would be a simple landing page that functions as about/contact and a page that would act as a form where users could upload a file (~25MB .wav). The files would be automatically uploaded to Dropbox or Google Drive, etc. (whatever is easiest). I have no visual assets (logos, images, etc.). I have some examples of design I have in mind as models (Jekyll pages, etc.) that I can share with you. I have never hired anyone for a project of this kind, so I don't know what common practice is re: contract pay, but I have a soft budget of ~1,000USD. I don't yet have a domain registered anywhere. ay Perform Record a Version of the Song "Down by the Bay" (Remote) By jobs.metafilter.com Published On :: Tue, 14 Apr 2020 19:21:37 -0800 I wrote a book for my son's birthday that is a version of the song Down by the Bay. I would love to accompany the not-quite-a-book with an MP3 of the song that he can sing along with. If you can sing and play an instrument (guitar, piano, kazoo, whatever) and put together a fun/happy/lively recording of the song, I want you! I was thinking $50 CAD? But I don't really know what's reasonable here. Also, I would somewhat prefer a Canadian just because I know how to email/text money to a Canadian, but I'm not really sure how I would pay anyone else. But if you have a way for me to pay you (I dunno a web site where I can "checkout" or whatever) then I'm happy for whoever. Full Article music perform record
ay 6 Ways College Might Look Different In The Fall By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Tue, 05 May 2020 12:20:11 +0000 What will happen on college campuses in the fall? It's a big question for families, students and the schools themselves. A lot of what happens depends on factors outside the control of individual schools: Will there be more testing? Contact tracing? Enough physical space for distancing? Will the coronavirus have a second wave? Will any given state allow campuses to reopen? For all of these questions, it's really too early to know the answers. But one thing is clear: Life, and learning for the nation's 20 million students in higher education, will be different. "I don't think there's any scenario under which it's business as usual on American college campuses in the fall," says Nicholas Christakis, a sociologist and physician at Yale University. So why are so many colleges announcing they will be back on campus in the fall? In many cases, it's because they're still trying to woo students. A survey of college presidents found their most pressing concern right now is summer and fall Full Article
ay French Education Minister Says School Reopenings Will Be Done 'Very Progressively' By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Fri, 08 May 2020 20:39:00 +0000 Primary schools in France are reopening next week. There will, of course, be social distancing measures in place. Class sizes will be limited to 15 and no games at recess. It's a gradual three-week process beginning with preschoolers. The government says the reopening is voluntary and students won't be forced to return. Still, many parents and administrators are against the plan. More than 300 mayors in the Paris region signed an open letter to President Macron, urging a delay in reopening and saying the timeline is " untenable and unrealistic ." They said schools needed more time to implement the required sanitary measures. Jean-Michel Blanquer, France's minister of education, talked with Mary Louise Kelly on All Things Considered about bringing students back to class for the first time since mid-March. Here are selected excerpts: Do you think they will come? Do you think you will have 15 students in classrooms come next week? Yes, because we are asking the parents during the last Full Article

ay Minnesota Gov. Walz Says More Testing Is Needed Before Many Businesses Can Reopen By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Fri, 08 May 2020 11:54:00 +0000 As Minnesota Gov. Walz weighs his decision on when to let nonessential businesses reopen, he's facing a lot of pressure from a frustrated workforce, especially from small business owners who are trying to stay afloat during the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus outbreak. "The frustrations that they have are real. These are businesses that, they may have been in families for generations or they built up," the Democratic governor says in an interview with Morning Edition . The state is under a stay-at-home order until at least May 18 . In reopening the economy, he says, businesses will face another challenge: consumer confidence. Walz worries that — even with stay-at-home orders lifted — many consumers will be skittish about reengaging with businesses until they feel safe. Walz says many businesses should remain closed until the state ramps up its testing capacity. Achieving that goal will help contain the virus's spread, as well as bolster the public's confidence, he says. Full Article

ay Anti-Vaccination Activists Join Stay-At-Home Order Protesters By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Sat, 09 May 2020 11:00:00 +0000 Protests over stay-at-home orders because of COVID-19 have become more common around the country. In California, a surprising group is behind some of them: those who oppose mandatory vaccinations. On Thursday, a mash-up of people mingled on the sidewalk in front of California's state Capitol in Sacramento. There were Trump supporters wearing MAGA hats and waving American flags. There were Christians, singing along to religious rock songs and raising their hands in prayer. The event's MC. urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to tune into their event. "Everybody up at the Capitol, tell Gavin Newsom [to tune in to] 107.9 FM, if he wants to hear what we have to say," the MC told the crowd over loudspeakers. "It could be kind of good for him!" There were also mothers with their children at the rally. Many people were not wearing face masks or observing social distancing protocols. They'd all come out to protest California's stay-at-home order, put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. This week's Full Article

ay Essay about the Role of R&B Music in Culture By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Thu, 30 Apr 2020 08:19:15 PDT It is normal for college students to find it difficult to understand an essay topic. But the big issue is how to write an essay according to the instructions of the paper. An essay topic related to the role of R&B music may pose a little challenge. Students often need a well-written sample to get the perfect picture of what to write. If you are a student with a similar topic, go through this sample essay, and use it as a guide. Sample Paper: The Role of R&B Music in Culture Music connects human beings irrespective of culture, ethnicity, or race, and this has become accepted in many regions of the world. Rhythm and Blue or R&B is of African-American origin born popular in the 1940s but has a growing fan base in contemporary times. The role of the R&B lies in connecting with the people, expressing personality, and asserting cultural freedom. Rhythm and Blues provide the avenue for musicians in this genre to find expression and connect with the people of a particular culture. Like every human on earth, these musicians have encountered life problems. They face racial discrimination and continuous harassment from law enforcement agents. Since R&B had its origin from the Black experience (Shaw 71), the emotional connection is often intense. An example of the experience that triggers the same emotional expression is the case of Trayvon Martins. George Zimmerman shot and killed Martins on February 26, 2012. R&B uses an incidence like this to find expression and create a familiar voice, especially for the black community. The intimacy and the ability to relate to the content of R&B music play an essential role in culture, especially in black communities. Most musicians in this genre use their songs as a platform for passing a message or expressing their personal beliefs. Although it can turn into a civil movement or used for political propaganda (Higgins 1), in some cases, it has a humanizing end. Imagine how influential the voices and personality of R&B musicians would be in a time of the global pandemic. These powerful voices can make governments begin to care for the masses. Thus, the outcry will yield better healthcare and lasting infrastructure. Freedom to live and practice inherited culture can come under threat by social and political forces. R&B, and the movement it drives, can be a force for good and help in liberating cultures considered to be less civilized. Limited understanding of the culture of other people can cause social frictions and the inability to live in harmony. With well-written lyrics and well-presented songs, R&B can articulate the grievances by lesser cultures. This will unite different cultures and generate mutual understanding and respect for all cultures of the world. The role of R&B music in culture goes beyond the melody, sweet voices, and instrumentals. It connects people who share a common history, presents an avenue to pass global messages, and becomes a tool for racial and ethnic freedom. With the discouragement of the use of arms and ammunition and the approval of non-violent means, R&B can use its popular music genres to forge unity and understanding between cultures. Rounding Off Once you have written your essay according to the above format, you should go ahead to choose a style of reference. If you look at the sample essay, you will notice some in-text citations. This is in the MLA style or Modern Language style, but you may pick APA style or ASA style depending on the requirements of the paper. Some supervisors give students the freedom to choose the style of their choice. The important thing is to pay attention to the instructions for the paper. The lack of following instructions can lead to a failed paper. Thus, you will lose the efforts and money spent. It is impossible to downplay the importance of proper research, as this serves as the bedrock for an excellent paper. There are many offline books and tons of online resources that can serve as authentic sources of information. When you gather the necessary ideas and materials, writing an essay on R&B will be easy. The reason most students claim to not get materials for their essay is that they did not search in the right places. Google Scholar and JSTOR Research are some of the right places to find materials for academic research. The bottom line is to view the sample essay, take note of the thesis statement, and understand how to write the topic sentence and detailed explanation of each point in the paragraph. But sometimes the pressure of academic work can be overwhelming, or you needed to come to terms with the technicality of essay writing. At that point, you may seek help from AffordablePapers to get your essay written for you at a reasonable price. Reference(s) 1.
