ada Can plankton adapt to warmer oceans? By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 14 Feb 2013 12:14:48 GMT Future decades could see shifts in phytoplankton populations, leading to less diversity among phytoplankton strains in increasingly warm tropical oceans, researchers predict. These microorganisms play an important role in regulating the Earth's climate. Full Article
ada Ecosystem-based adaptation provides promising approach By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Mon, 18 Mar 2013 17:31:15 +0100 The advantages of soft ecosystem-based climate change adaptation over hard infrastructure-based approaches are becoming increasingly recognised. A new analysis highlights these advantages and calls for more effort to improve our understanding of ecosystem-based adaptation's (EbA) effectiveness. Full Article
ada Causes of ecological degradation in waterways By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 2 May 2013 12:53:52 +0100 Human activities can have a multitude of different effects on rivers and streams, and it is difficult identify those that have the biggest impact on aquatic populations. A newly developed method for assessing ecological degradation in waterways helps deal with this problem and could provide crucial information for water managers charged with tackling the root causes of degradation. ada Ecosystem-based adaptation can support food security By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Tue, 17 Sep 2013 11:20:44 +0100 Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to climate change could help avoid future food crises in Africa, a new review suggests. By examining United Nations EbA projects implemented across Africa, the authors demonstrate that such approaches help improve the climate change resilience of production systems and the communities dependent upon them. ada Mangroves provide both climate change mitigation and adaptation services By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Tue, 17 Sep 2013 11:21:54 +0100 Rates of carbon storage by mangroves are substantially higher than previously thought, research suggests. Using new data, researchers have estimated that worldwide, mangroves bury 26.1 megatonnes of organic carbon per year, which is 42% more than the estimations made in 2008. Full Article
ada Localised adaptation makes some oysters more resilient to climate change than others By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 18 Feb 2016 09:12:34 GMT Olympia oysters (Ostrea lurida) have been shown to adapt to local environments that are as little as 20 km apart, and these adaptations can be passed on to offspring. In this study, oysters that originated from less saline areas tended to be more resilient to extremely low saline conditions than oysters from more saline areas. Since episodes of reduced salinity are a predicted effect of climate change in the San Francisco Bay area under study, the authors say their findings could be useful for future conservation and restoration efforts. ada Biodegradation of PPCPs in wastewater treatment plants — a Danish case study By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Wed, 04 May 2016 12:34:56 GMT The non-restricted production and use of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has led to their presence in effluents from treatment plants, which can pose a threat to aquatic organisms downstream. This study analysed the breakdown of six common chemicals in four Danish treatment plants. The findings shed new light on the factors affecting removal of PPCPs from waste, showing that the composition of waste is more important than the design of the treatment plant. Full Article
ada Biodegradable, oxo-degradable and compostable bags observed over three years in the sea, open air and soil By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 28 November 2019 11:23:19 GMT European scientists have conducted the first ever long-term study into the breakdown of alternative plastic bags compared to conventional plastic bags, across multiple habitats — open air, soil and sea. Oxo-degradable, compostable and biodegradable bags are often marketed as being recycled back into nature more quickly than normal bags; however, the long-term environmental studies to back this up are lacking and there is concern regarding microplastic pollution from these alternative plastic bags. ada Multi-pollutant approach needed to halt soil degradation By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Tue, 22 Dec 2009 15:13:25 GMT A new study highlights the need for new policies to stop the rise of nitrogen oxide emissions in China. The researchers suggest that the positive impact of policies to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions are not enough in themselves to avoid soil acidification, as they will be outweighed over the next decade by the impact of nitrogen emissions. ada Vegetative Vigour Terrestrial Plant Test adapted for assessment of atmospheric pollution By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 12 April 2018 9:23:19 GMT It is important to understand the extent to which atmospheric (air) pollution damages plants (i.e. its phytotoxicity) as well as the wider ecosystem (i.e. its ecotoxicity). For this reason, researchers have adapted the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Vegetative Vigour Test1 for the assessment of the ecotoxicity of samples of aerosol (suspensions of fine solid particles or liquid droplets in air). Typically, the test involves spraying the trial liquid on above-ground portions of the plant, such as the leaves. The adapted protocol involves extracting water-soluble aerosol compounds from aerosol samples to spray on the plant. The new protocol is sensitive enough to determine phytotoxicity and establish a clear cause–effect relationship, and as such has the potential to serve as a useful tool for the assessment of the effects of air pollution on environmental and human health.
