The varied structures of cobalt(II)–pyridine (py)–sulfate: [Co(SO4)(py)4]n, [Co2(SO4)2(py)6]n, and [Co3(SO4)3(py)11]n

The solid-state structures of two cobalt–pyridine–sulfate compounds, namely catena-poly[[tetra­kis­(pyridine-κN)cobalt(II)]-μ-sulfato-κ2O:O'], [Co(SO4)(C5H5N)4]n, (1), and catena-poly[[tetra­kis­(pyridine-κN)cobalt(II)]-μ-sulfato-κ3O:O',O''-[bis­(pyridine-κN)cobalt(II)]-μ-sulfato-κ3O,O':O'']n, [Co2(SO4)2(C5H5N)6]n, (2), are reported. Compound (1) displays a polymeric structure, with infinite chains of CoII cations adopting octa­hedral N4O2 coordination environments that involve four pyridine ligands and two bridging sulfate ions. Compound (2) is also polymeric with infinite chains of CoII cations. The first Co center has an octa­hedral N4O2 coordination environment that involves four pyridine ligands and two bridging sulfate ligands. The second Co center has an octa­hedral N2O4 coordination environment that involves two pyridine ligands and two bridging sulfate ions that chelate the Co atom. The structure of (2) was refined as a two-component inversion twin.

Diversifying molecular and topological space via a supramolecular solid-state synthesis: a purely organic mok net sustained by hydrogen bonds

A three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network based on a rare mok topology has been constructed using an organic molecule synthesized in the solid state. The molecule is obtained using a supramolecular protecting-group strategy that is applied to a solid-state [2+2] photodimerization. The photodimerization affords a novel head-to-head cyclo­butane product. The cyclo­butane possesses tetrahedrally disposed cis-hydrogen-bond donor (phenolic) and cis-hydrogen-bond acceptor (pyridyl) groups. The product self-assembles in the solid state to form a mok network that exhibits twofold interpenetration. The cyclo­butane adopts different conformations to provide combinations of hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor sites to conform to the structural requirements of the mok net.

Scanning electron microscopy as a method for sample visualization in protein X-ray crystallography

Developing methods to determine high-resolution structures from micrometre- or even submicrometre-sized protein crystals has become increasingly important in recent years. This applies to both large protein complexes and membrane proteins, where protein production and the subsequent growth of large homogeneous crystals is often challenging, and to samples which yield only micro- or nanocrystals such as amyloid or viral polyhedrin proteins. The versatile macromolecular crystallography microfocus (VMXm) beamline at Diamond Light Source specializes in X-ray diffraction measurements from micro- and nanocrystals. Because of the possibility of measuring data from crystalline samples that approach the resolution limit of visible-light microscopy, the beamline design includes a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to visualize, locate and accurately centre crystals for X-ray diffraction experiments. To ensure that scanning electron microscopy is an appropriate method for sample visualization, tests were carried out to assess the effect of SEM radiation on diffraction quality. Cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus polyhedrin protein crystals cryocooled on electron-microscopy grids were exposed to SEM radiation before X-ray diffraction data were collected. After processing the data with DIALS, no statistically significant difference in data quality was found between datasets collected from crystals exposed and not exposed to SEM radiation. This study supports the use of an SEM as a tool for the visualization of protein crystals and as an integrated visualization tool on the VMXm beamline.

Structure variations within RSi2 and R2TSi3 silicides. Part I. Structure overview

Here, structural parameters of various structure reports on RSi2 and R2TSi3 compounds [where R is an alkaline earth metal, a rare earth metal (i.e. an element of the Sc group or a lathanide), or an actinide and T is a transition metal] are summarized. The parameters comprising composition, lattice parameters a and c, ratio c/a, formula unit per unit cell and structure type are tabulated. The relationships between the underlying structure types are presented within a group–subgroup scheme (Bärnighausen diagram). Additionally, unexpectedly missing compounds within the R2TSi3 compounds were examined with density functional theory and compounds that are promising candidates for synthesis are listed. Furthermore, a correlation was detected between the orthorhombic AlB2-like lattices of, for example, Ca2AgSi3 and the divalence of R and the monovalence of T. Finally, a potential tetragonal structure with ordered Si/T sites is proposed.

Correlative vibrational spectroscopy and 2D X-ray diffraction to probe the mineralization of bone in phosphate-deficient mice

Bone crystallite chemistry and structure change during bone maturation. However, these properties of bone can also be affected by limited uptake of the chemical constituents of the mineral by the animal. This makes probing the effect of bone-mineralization-related diseases a complicated task. Here it is shown that the combination of vibrational spectroscopy with two-dimensional X-ray diffraction can provide unparalleled information on the changes in bone chemistry and structure associated with different bone pathologies (phosphate deficiency) and/or health conditions (pregnancy, lactation). Using a synergistic analytical approach, it was possible to trace the effect that changes in the remodelling regime have on the bone mineral chemistry and structure in normal and mineral-deficient (hypophosphatemic) mice. The results indicate that hypophosphatemic mice have increased bone remodelling, increased carbonate content and decreased crystallinity of the bone mineral, as well as increased misalignment of crystallites within the bone tissue. Pregnant and lactating mice that are normal and hypophosphatemic showed changes in the chemistry and misalignment of the apatite crystals that can be related to changes in remodelling rates associated with different calcium demand during pregnancy and lactation.

Most articles dealing with R2TSi3 compounds are only interested in one specific composite or in a series of composites with varying T elements while keeping R fixed (or vice versa). The present work gives an overview of the complete range of 2:1:3 silicides, similar those of Hoffmann & Pöttgen (2001) and Pan et al. (2013). In contrast to the work of Hoffmann & Pöttgen (2001), reasons for formation of the different symmetries and superstructures are discussed. Here, crystallographic properties are in[the] focus, whereas physical and magnetic properties are omitted because those are given by Pan et al. (2013). An extracellular domain of the EsaA membrane component of the type VIIb secretion system: expression, purification and crystallization

The membrane protein EsaA is a conserved component of the type VIIb secretion system. Limited proteolysis of purified EsaA from Staphylococcus aureus USA300 identified a stable 48 kDa fragment, which was mapped by fingerprint mass spectrometry to an uncharacterized extracellular segment of EsaA. Analysis by circular dichroism spectroscopy showed that this fragment folds into a single stable domain made of mostly α-helices with a melting point of 34.5°C. Size-exclusion chromatography combined with multi-angle light scattering indicated the formation of a dimer of the purified extracellular domain. Octahedral crystals were grown in 0.2 M ammonium citrate tribasic pH 7.0, 16% PEG 3350 using the hanging-drop vapor-diffusion method. Diffraction data were analyzed to 4.0 Å resolution, showing that the crystals belonged to the enantiomorphic tetragonal space groups P41212 or P43212, with unit-cell parameters a = 197.5, b = 197.5, c = 368.3 Å, α = β = γ = 90°.

For first time, scientists prove locusts use vision to place their legs when walking

In their laboratory, scientists from the University of Cambridge, the University of Southampton and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, observed as a number of adult locusts walked along a horizontal ladder. After covering the right or left eye of an insect, the scientists observed a significant increase in the error rate of rungs missed by the front leg on the side of the covered eye.

New comet may be visible to the naked eye in 2013

Astronomers have discovered a new comet that they expect will be visible to the naked eye in early 2013.A preliminary orbit computed by the Minor Planet Center at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Mass., shows that the comet will come within about 30 million miles of the sun in early 2013, about the same distance as Mercury. The comet will pose no danger to Earth.
