Spin reorientation and the interplay of magnetic sublattices in Er2CuMnMn4O12

We show that the interplay of multiple magnetic sublattices in Er2CuMnMn4O12 leads to four magnetic phase transitions characterized by the onset of ferrimagnetic order, spin-reorientation, spin canting, and the polarization of Er ions. While we elucidate numerous features of this complex magnetic system, the exact nature of the low-temperature coupling between erbium and manganese, and the origin of a k = (0, 0, ½) modulation, remain intriguing topics for future studies.

Synthesis and structural study of the partially disordered complex hexagonal phase δ1-MnZn9.7

A detailed structural analysis of the Zn-rich δ1-MnZn9.7 phase using single-crystal X-ray diffraction is presented. The δ1 phase has been synthesized by the high-temperature synthetic route. The structure crystallizes in space group P63/mmc (Pearson symbol hP556) with unit-cell parameters: a = b = 12.9051 (2) Å and c = 57.640 (1) Å. The 556 atoms are distributed over 52 Wyckoff positions in the hexagonal unit cell: seven ordered Mn sites, 37 ordered Zn sites and eight positionally disordered Zn sites. The structure predominantly consists of Frank–Kasper polyhedra (endohedral icosahedra Zn12 and icosioctahedron Zn16) and four distinct types of glue Zn atoms. The structure comprises a 127-atom supercluster (Mn13Zn114), a 38-atom extended Pearce cluster (Mn3Zn35), a 46-atom L-tetrahedron (Mn4Zn42), a Friauf polyhedron (Zn17), a disordered icosahedral cluster (MnZn12) and four glue Zn atoms. Positionally disordered Zn sites around an Mn site can be visualized as the superimposition of three differently oriented Zn12 icosahedra.

Spin reorientation and the interplay of magnetic sublattices in Er2CuMnMn4O12

Through a combination of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction measurements we have revealed a sequence of four magnetic phase transitions in the columnar quadruple perovskite Er2CuMnMn4O12. A key feature of the quadruple perovskite structural framework is the complex interplay of multiple magnetic sublattices via frustrated exchange topologies and competing magnetic anisotropies. It is shown that in Er2CuMnMn4O12, this phenomenology gives rise to multiple spin-reorientation transitions driven by the competition of easy-axis single ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction; both within the manganese B-site sublattice. At low temperature, one Er sublattice orders due to a finite f-d exchange field aligned parallel to its Ising axis, while the other Er sublattice remains non-magnetic until a final, symmetry-breaking phase transition into the ground state. This non-trivial low-temperature interplay of transition metal and rare-earth sublattices, as well as an observed k = (0, 0, ½) periodicity in both manganese spin canting and Er ordering, raises future challenges to develop a complete understanding of the R2CuMnMn4O12 family.

Synthesis and crystal structure of Ba2Y0.87(1)Mn1.71(1)Te5

We report the structural characterization of a new quaternary telluride, Ba2Y0.87(1)Mn1.71(1)Te5, which was synthesized by the direct reaction of the elements inside a vacuum-sealed fused-silica tube. The quaternary phase is the first member of the Ba–M–Mn–Te system (M = Sc and Y). The composition and structure of the phase were elucidated using SEM–EDX (scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) studies. The title phase is nonstoichiometric and crystallizes in the monoclinic system (space group C2/m) having the refined unit-cell parameters a = 15.1466 (8), b = 4.5782 (3), c = 10.6060 (7) Å and β = 116.956 (2)°, with two formula units (Z = 2). The pseudo-two-dimensional crystal structure of Ba2Y0.87(1)Mn1.71(1)Te5 consists of distorted YTe6 octahedra and MnTe4 tetrahedra as the building blocks of the structure. The YTe6 octahedra are arranged to form infinite one-dimensional chains by sharing edges along the [010] direction. These chains are further connected to the MnTe4 tetrahedra along the c axis to create layered two-dimensional polyanionic [Y0.87(1)Mn1.71(1)Te5]4− units. The stuffing of Ba2+ cations in between the layers of [Y0.87(1)Mn1.71(1)Te5]4− anions brings the charge neutrality of the structure. Each Ba atom in the structure sits at the centre of a distorted monocapped trigonal prism-like polyhedron of seven Te atoms.

Synthesis, spectroscopic and crystallographic characterization of various cymantrenyl thioethers [Mn{C5HxBry(SMe)z}(PPh3)(CO)2]

Starting from [Mn(C5H4Br)(PPh3)(CO)2] (1a), the cymantrenyl thioethers [Mn(C5H4SMe)(PPh3)(CO)2] (1b) and [Mn{C5H4–nBr(SMe)n}(PPh3)(CO)2] (n = 1 for compound 2, n = 2 for 3 and n = 3 for 4) were obtained, using either n-butyllithium (n-BuLi), lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) or lithium tetramethylpiperidide (LiTMP) as base, followed by electrophilic quenching with MeSSMe. Stepwise consecutive reaction of [Mn(C5Br5)(PPh3)(CO)2] with n-BuLi and MeSSMe led finally to [Mn{C5(SMe)5}(PPh3)(CO)2] (11), only the fifth complex to be reported containing a perthiolated cyclopentadienyl ring. The molecular and crystal structures of 1b, 3, 4 and 11 were determined and were studied for the occurrence of S⋯S and S⋯Br interactions. It turned out that although some interactions of this type occurred, they were of minor importance for the arrangement of the molecules in the crystal.

On the magnetic and crystal structures of NiO and MnO

The magnetic and crystal structures of manganese and nickel monoxides have been studied using high-resolution neutron diffraction. The known 1k-structures based on the single propagation vector [½ ½ ½] for the parent paramagnetic space group Fm3m are forced to have monoclinic magnetic symmetry and are not possible in rhombohedral symmetry. However, the monoclinic distortions from the rhombohedral crystal metric allowed by symmetry are very small, and the explicit monoclinic splittings of the diffraction peaks have not been experimentally observed. We analyse the magnetic crystallographic models metrically compatible with our experimental data in full detail by using isotropy subgroup representation approach, including rhombohedral solutions based on the propagation vector star {[½ ½ ½], [−½ ½ ½], [½−½ ½], [½ ½ −½]}. Although the full star rhombohedral RI3c structure can equally well fit our diffraction data for NiO, we conclude that the best solution for the crystal and magnetic structures for NiO and MnO is the 1k monoclinic model with the magnetic space group Cc2/c (Belov–Neronova–Smirnova No. 15.90, UNI symbol C2/c.1'c[C2/m]).

Synthesis and crystal structures of two related Co and Mn complexes: a celebration of collaboration between the universities of Dakar and Southampton

We report the synthesis and structures of two transition-metal complexes involving 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole (2hpbi – a ligand of interest for its photoluminescent applications), with cobalt, namely, bis[μ-2-(1H-1,3-benzodiazol-2-yl)phenolato]bis[ethanol(thiocyanato)cobalt(II)], [Co2(C13H9N2O)2(NCS)2(C2H6O)2], (1), and manganese, namely, bis[μ-2-(1H-1,3-benzodiazol-2-yl)phenolato]bis{[2-(1H-1,3-benzodiazol-2-yl)phenolato](thiocyanato)manganese(III)} dihydrate, [Mn2(C13H9N2O)4(NCS)2]·2H2O, (2). These structures are two recent examples of a fruitful collaboration between researchers at the Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination Organique/Organic Coordination Chemistry Laboratory (LCCO), University of Dakar, Senegal and the National Crystallography Service (NCS), School of Chemistry, University Southampton, UK. This productive partnership was forged through meeting at Pan-African Conferences on Crystallography and quickly grew as the plans for the AfCA (African Crystallographic Association) developed. This article therefore also showcases this productive partnership, in celebration of the IUCr's 75 year anniversary and the recent inclusion of AfCA as a Regional Associate of the IUCr.

Synthesis, crystal structure and photophysical properties of a dinuclear MnII complex with 6-(diethylamino)-4-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)quinoline

A new quinoline derivative, namely, 6-(diethylamino)-4-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)quinoline, C24H23N3 (QP), and its MnII complex aqua-1κO-di-μ-chlorido-1:2κ4Cl:Cl-dichlorido-1κCl,2κCl-bis[6-(diethylamino)-4-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)quinoline]-1κ2N1,N2;2κ2N1,N2-dimanganese(II), [Mn2Cl4(C24H23N3)2(H2O)] (MnQP), were synthesized. Their compositions have been determined with ESI-MS, IR, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The crystal-structure determination of MnQP revealed a dinuclear complex with a central four-membered Mn2Cl2 ring. Both MnII atoms bind to an additional Cl atom and to two N atoms of the QP ligand. One MnII atom expands its coordination sphere with an extra water molecule, resulting in a distorted octahedral shape. The second MnII atom shows a distorted trigonal–bipyramidal shape. The UV–vis absorption and emission spectra of the examined compounds were studied. Furthermore, when investigating the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, it was found that the fluorescent color changes from blue to green and eventually becomes yellow as the fraction of water in the THF/water mixture increases from 0% to 99%. In particular, these color and intensity changes are most pronounced at a water fraction of 60%. The crystal structure contains disordered solvent molecules, which could not be modeled. The SQUEEZE procedure [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst. C71, 9–18] was used to obtain information on the type and quantity of solvent molecules, which resulted in 44 electrons in a void volume of 274 Å3, corresponding to approximately 1.7 molecules of ethanol in the unit cell. These ethanol molecules are not considered in the given chemical formula and other crystal data.

New way for bridges to withstand earthquakes: Support column design

Full Text:

Bridges make travel faster and more convenient, but, in an earthquake, these structures are subject to forces that can cause extensive damage and make them unsafe. Now civil and environmental engineer Petros Sideris of Texas A&M University is leading a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded research project to investigate the performance of hybrid sliding-rocking (HSR) columns. HSR columns provide the same support as conventional bridge infrastructure columns but are more earthquake-resistant. HSR columns are a series of individual concrete segments held together by steel cables that allow for controlled sliding and rocking. This allows the columns to shift without damage, while post-tensioning strands ensure that at the end of an earthquake the columns are pushed back to their original position. Conventional bridges are cast-in-place monolithic concrete elements that are strong but inflexible. Structural damage in these bridge columns, typically caused by a natural disaster, often forces a bridge to close until repairs are completed. But bridges with HSR columns can withstand large earthquakes with minimal damage and require minor repairs, likely without bridge closures. Such infrastructure helps with post-disaster response and recovery and can save thousands in taxpayer dollars. In an earthquake, HSR columns provide "multiple advantages to the public," Sideris said. "By preventing bridge damage, we can maintain access to affected areas immediately after an event for response teams to be easily deployed, and help affected communities recover faster. In mitigating losses related to post-event bridge repairs and bridge closures, more funds can be potentially directed to supporting the recovery of the affected communities." According to Joy Pauschke, NSF program director for natural hazards engineering, "NSF invests in fundamental engineering research so that, in the future, the nation's infrastructure can be more resilient to earthquakes, hurricanes, and other forces of nature."
