Nokia 6.1 and recording

The nokia 6.1 came out at the beginning of 2018.
It is under the android one program, which means that it is running stock android.
Also it gets updates faster than other phones.
At the time of writing, I am waiting to get android 9.0 pie on my phone which some nokia 6.1 users started receiving already.

I am using hi-q mp3 recorder pro for my tests.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hiqrecorder.full

Probably you will get similar results with amazing mp3 recorder, but I am more familiar with hi-q mp3 so I am using this one instead.

In hi-q mp3 recorder we have got 5 available microphone options with in settings.
Front microphone which is enabled by default, rear microphone if available, raw audio no pre processing, device default and unprosessed raw.

The last option unprosessed raw, is available only for android 7 and above. I don't find this option on my nexus5 which is on android 6.01.

On the nokia 6.1, the 3 options front microphone, raw audio no pre processing and device default, don't give good results either in mono or stereo.
Noise cancelation is used, similar to the nexus5, and the gain volume is pritty high.
This is also the type of sound you get if you send voice messages in facebook messenger, watsapp and viber.
The gain is not as high, but you get noise cancelation.
Your voice sounds nice and clear, but don't expect to capture the surrounding atmosphere if you are out and about at the sea, the garden etc.

Only the options rear microphone if available and unprocessed raw are giving good results.

In mono, the rear microphone option is much louder than unprosessed raw, but the result is good for both without noise cancelation.

When stereo is enabled, both options are pritty much the same in my oppinion.

When stereo is enabled, the left microphone is the one on the top where the headphones juck is, and the right one is on the bottom where the usb port and speaker is.

When recording in stereo, to avoid distortions, it's better in my opinion to have the gain at 80 or 85 percent.
You can always use a sound editor later to change the volumes.
It's much easier to make a quiet recording louder, but if it is distorted it's pritty impossible to fix it.

Personal comments about the stereo recording.

The over all result is good.
I would say it is impressive for a phone which costs 270 dollars or less.

I have got the impression that the right microphone is slightly louder than the left, and perhaps some more bass would be better.
The highs are very good, maybe a bit too much, but for my needs they are welcome because I want to record bird sounds especially during Spring.

Finally it wouldn't be possible to talk about recording without a sample.

The following recording is about 7 minutes and 30 seconds long and there are 3 parts in it.

Part1 is very short. It's a car passing from right to left in front of me.
Part2 is the longest. It is some general ambianse from the ikea restaurant in Nicosia Cyprus.
Finally part3 is a short sample of a music practice.

You can use the link below to have a listen.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/x7036rjgq5ak9vc/Nokia%206.1%20stereo%20demo.mp...

Android pie and recording.

With the update to android pie on this phone, it is not possible to make long recordings with the screen locked.
After 30 or 40 minutes of recording, the microphones are muted and the rest of the recording is completely silent.

Unfortunately the only work around is to keep screen on during the recording to make sure that all the sounds will be captured without interruption.

In hi-q mp3 settings, unfortunately we have got the option to keep screen on under trouble shooting settings.
We have got the options to dim the screen during recording or to use it with the brightness we use any other time when the screen is on.

Unfortunately this method will use more battery but for now I couldn't find anything else.

I hope this issue will be fixed with a future update.
I know the intention was good. Probably they wanted to protect us from programs which might watch the microphone and camera without our attention but this functionality is useful for some other apps.

I will update this article if nokia fix this issue.
Thanks for reading.

The Role of the Rat Prefrontal Cortex and Sex Differences in Decision-Making

The prefrontal cortex is critical for decision-making across species, with its activity linked to choosing between options. Drift diffusion models (DDMs) are commonly employed to understand the neural computations underlying this behavior. Studies exploring the specific roles of regions of the rodent prefrontal cortex in controlling the decision process are limited. This study explored the role of the prelimbic cortex (PLC) in decision-making using a two-alternative forced-choice task. Rats first learned to report the location of a lateralized visual stimulus. The brightness of the stimulus indicated its reward value. Then, the rats learned to make choices between pairs of stimuli. Sex differences in learning were observed, with females responding faster and more selectively to high-value stimuli than males. DDM analysis found that males had decreased decision thresholds during initial learning, whereas females maintained a consistently higher drift rate. Pharmacological manipulations revealed that PLC inactivation reduced the decision threshold for all rats, indicating that less information was needed to make a choice in the absence of normal PLC processing. μ-Opioid receptor stimulation of the PLC had the opposite effect, raising the decision threshold and reducing bias in the decision process toward high-value stimuli. These effects were observed without any impact on the rats’ choice preferences. Our findings suggest that PLC has an inhibitory role in the decision process and regulates the amount of evidence that is required to make a choice. That is, PLC activity controls "when," but not "how," to act.

Orbitofrontal Cortex Mediates Sustained Basolateral Amygdala Encoding of Cued Reward-Seeking States

Basolateral amygdala (BLA) neurons are engaged by emotionally salient stimuli. An area of increasing interest is how BLA dynamics relate to evolving reward-seeking behavior, especially under situations of uncertainty or ambiguity. Here, we recorded the activity of individual BLA neurons in male rats across the acquisition and extinction of conditioned reward seeking. We assessed ongoing neural dynamics in a task where long reward cue presentations preceded an unpredictable, variably time reward delivery. We found that, with training, BLA neurons discriminated the CS+ and CS– cues with sustained cue-evoked activity that correlated with behavior and terminated only after reward receipt. BLA neurons were bidirectionally modulated, with a majority showing prolonged inhibition during cued reward seeking. Strikingly, population-level analyses revealed that neurons showing cue-evoked inhibitions and those showing excitations similarly represented the CS+ and behavioral state. This sustained population code rapidly extinguished in parallel with conditioned behavior. We next assessed the contribution of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), a major reciprocal partner to the BLA. Inactivation of the OFC while simultaneously recording in the BLA revealed a blunting of sustained cue-evoked activity in the BLA that accompanied reduced reward seeking. Optogenetic disruption of BLA activity and OFC terminals in the BLA also reduced reward seeking. Our data indicate that the BLA represents reward-seeking states via sustained, bidirectional cue-driven neural encoding. This code is regulated by cortical input and is important for the maintenance of vigilant reward-seeking behavior.

Eight PTI men ‘exonerated’ in Lahore corps commander house attack case

• Govt objects to repeal of prison rules for PTI founder
• Imran booked in 54 cases across Punjab, LHC told

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday disposed of pre-arrest bail petitions of eight PTI activists in the case regarding an attack on the Lahore corps commander’s residence after police declared them innocent in the investigation.

ATC-I Judge Manzer Ali Gill was hearing the bail petitions of 32 activists when a prosecutor stated that a joint investigation team (JIT), formed to probe the May 9 incidents, had exonerated eight of the petitioners for lack of evidence.

At this, the lawyer for the activists sought the court permission to withdraw their bail petitions.

The judge adjourned the bail petitions of other activists till Dec 11 and 13, asking them to join the JIT investigation.

The judge allowed the request and disposed of the petitions of Tanzila Imran, Rizwana Ghazanfar, Makiya Saeed, Shahbaz Amir Ali, Farooq Ahmad, Usman Naveed, Zirk Khan and Mian Ahmad Rehman.

Sarwar Road police of Lahore had registered a case against PTI leaders and workers for attacking the Lahore corps commander house, also known as Jinnah House, on May 9 last year.

Separately, ATC-III Judge Arshad Javed adjourned the hearing of post-arrest bail petitions by the PTI leaders, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Rashid and Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, in May 9 cases.

The judge directed the petitioners’ lawyers to conclude their arguments on the next hearing; otherwise, the petitions would be decided on the basis of police record.

The judge postponed the pleas of Rasheed till Nov 12, Dr Yasmin till Nov 13 & 16, and Qureshi till Nov 19.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz, issued a notice to Advocate Sher Afzal Marwat on whose petition the section was set aside, seeking his response.

Prison rules

Meanwhile, a two-member division bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) took up the petition of the chief commissioner Islamabad against setting aside of Section 265 of the Punjab Prison Rules that prohibits political discussion during prisoner meetings with visitors.

The plea contested Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan’s verdict, which had struck down Section 265.

Advocate General Islamabad Ayaz Shaukat argued that the IHC lacked jurisdiction to intervene in Punjab’s laws and maintained that the single bench did not have the authority to nullify provisions in the Punjab Prison Rules.

Chief Justice Farooq asked, “So, you are saying that the Islamabad High Court cannot interfere in any provincial law?”

Justice Imtiaz noted that the Punjab Prison Rules are also applicable to prisoners in Islamabad, suggesting an overlap in jurisdiction.

The CJ inquired whether a formal notice under Section 27A was issued to the attorney general or the advocate general by the single bench, a requirement before declaring any law invalid.

While the advocate general said he had been summoned, he acknowledged that a formal notice was not issued.

Advocate General Shaukat requested the immediate suspension of the single bench’s decision, but Chief Justice Farooq scheduled a formal hearing for the next week.

Justice Farooq Haider was hearing a petition filed by Imran’s sister, Noreen Niazi, challenging the non-disclosure of the cases’ details against her brother.

Cases against Imran

Also on Tuesday, Punjab Police told the Lahore High Court that 54 criminal cases, including those related to May 9, had been registered against PTI founding chairman Imran Khan in different cities of the province.

Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536) - Erasmus' Bible Version the 'Textus Receptus' meaning the 'Received Texts' - In considering the experiences of Linacre and Colet, the great scholar Erasmus was so moved to correct the corrupt Latin Vulga

Writings of Erasmus: His more serious writings begin early with the Enchiridion Militis Christiani, the "Manual (or Dagger) of the Christian Gentleman" (1503). In this little volume Erasmus outlines the views of the normal Christian life which he was to spend the rest of his days in elaborating. The key-note of it all is sincerity. The chief evil of the day, he says, is formalism, a respect for traditions, a regard for what other people think essential, but never a thought of what the true teaching of Christ may be. Another of Erasmus's books worthy of mention was, Praise of Folly, dedicated to his friend Sir Thomas More. -- While in England Erasmus began the systematic examination of manuscripts of the New Testament to prepare for a new edition and Latin translation. This edition was published by Froben of Basel in 1516 and was the basis of most of the scientific study of the Bible during the Reformation period. It was the first attempt on the part of a competent and liberal-minded scholar to ascertain what the writers of the New Testament had actually said. The Greek text produced by Erasmus is known as textus receptus and was the basis for the King James Version of the New Testament. Erasmus dedicated his work ironically, to Pope Leo X., and he justly regarded this work as his chief service to the cause of a sound Christianity. Immediately after he began the publication of his Paraphrases of the New Testament, a popular presentation of the contents of the several books. These, like all the writings of Erasmus, were in Latin, but they were at once translated into the common languages of the European peoples, a process which received the hearty approval of Erasmus himself.
