Emphasis on muscularity has increased in recent decades. Identifying adolescent populations at risk for unhealthy muscle-enhancing behaviors is of considerable importance, yet recent research in the United States is limited in terms of sample diversity and behaviors of interest.

Muscle-enhancing behaviors were common for both boys and girls, and rates were higher than reported previously. Adolescents in high school, of Asian background, in overweight/obese BMI categories, and involved in sports reported significantly greater use than other youth. (Read the full article)

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and those with ADHD are at risk for problematic video game use. However, group differences in media use or in the factors associated with problematic video game use have not been studied.

Boys with ASD and ADHD demonstrated greater problematic video game use than did boys with typical development. Inattention was uniquely associated with problematic use for both groups, and role-playing game genre was associated with problematic use among the ASD group only. (Read the full article)

Prenatal and postnatal organophosphate (cholinesterase inhibitor) pesticide exposure has been associated with delays in attention, memory, intelligence, and inhibitory control. Two recent studies reported decreased attention and working memory with greater exposure to organophosphates in boys but not in girls.

This is the first study to report associations between decreased acetylcholinesterase activity, a stable marker of cholinesterase inhibitor pesticide exposure, and lower overall neurodevelopment, attention, inhibitory control, and memory. Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk for sleep disturbances and excessive media use. However, the relationship between media use and sleep in children with ASD or ADHD has not been studied.

In-room access to screen-based media and video game hours were associated with less sleep among boys with ASD. The relationships between media use and sleep were much more pronounced among boys with ASD than among boys with ADHD or typical development. (Read the full article)

Anabolic-androgenic steroid misuse is not uncommon among adolescent boys, and initial use in adolescence is associated with a host of maladaptive outcomes, including cardiovascular, endocrine, and psychiatric complications.

This is the first known study to examine prevalence rates of anabolic-androgenic steroid misuse as a function of sexual orientation. A dramatic disparity was found, in that sexual minority boys reported misuse at a much higher rate than heterosexual boys. (Read the full article)

Investigations of adolescents’ sexual risk behavior have focused on factors such as parental monitoring, deviant peer affiliation, and daring that occur during early and midadolescence. Less is known about early childhood precursors to adolescent sexual risk behavior.

This prospective longitudinal study identifies parenting practices and mothers’ depressive symptomatology during early childhood as precursors to later sexual risk behavior and involvement in pregnancy in adolescent boys, with deviant peer affiliation during emerging adolescence mediating these relationships. Adolescent males from low-income communities are a group at increased risk of obesity and related health concerns. Obesity prevention interventions targeting adolescents have so far had mixed success. Targeted interventions, tailored for specific groups, may be more appealing and efficacious.

A multicomponent school-based intervention using smartphone technology can improve muscular fitness, movement skills, and key weight-related behaviors among low-income adolescent boys. (Read the full article)
