The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric has examined 30-day risk-adjusted outcomes in children’s surgery. Because of low event rates, initial efforts yielded valid models that did not meaningfully discriminate outcomes among over 20 participating institutions.

Programmatic growth, sampling algorithm refinement, and hierarchical modeling use have resulted in the ability to reliably discriminate performance among hospitals in multiple domains. Research in the aftermath of large-scale terrorist attacks shows that exposed children experience numerous negative psychological sequelae, including increased emotional difficulties, posttraumatic stress, and significant attack-related life disruptions.

Most research on terrorism-exposed youth examines large-scale terrorism. Limited work examines reactions to terrorism of the scope of the marathon attack, and the extraordinary manhunt and shelter-in-place warning was an unprecedented experience. Concerns as well as hopes regarding electronic games have led researchers to study the influence of games on children, yet studies to date have largely examined potential positive and negative effects in isolation and using samples of convenience.

Children who suffer abusive head trauma (AHT) have lasting health and development problems. AHT can reduce life expectancy dramatically. AHT’s contribution to the burden of disease has been estimated only as part of a broad category of intentional injury.

Trainee success rates with infant lumbar puncture are poor. The model of just-in-time learning via simulation has produced clinical improvement for other medical skills such as cardiac compressions and central line dressing changes.

This is the first study to evaluate the impact of just-in-time-and-place simulation-based learning on success with infant lumbar puncture. The intervention improved clinical behaviors associated with success without making a significant impact on success with the procedure. (Read the full article)

In our cohort of 869 mother-daughter pairs, we found no differences in general adjustment, but 10- to 13-year-old girls with breast cancer family histories reported higher breast cancer–specific distress and perceived breast cancer risk.
