Star Trek: Discovery - Season Two

Recommended

This review necessitates an unusually long premise, so bear with me. I'm a lifelong casual fan of the Star Trek franchise, from the original 1966-69 series through The Next Generation and, a bit less so, Deep Space Nine and all the feature films made up to that point. In the minority, I also regard Star Trek Voyager as the best, most daring of the "Next Generation" era shows, but didn't care for Star Trek: Enterprise, as its post 9/11-era teleplays seemed to swing the Star Trek universe hard to the right, in directions that seemed in stark opposition to the original intentions of the franchise's late creator, Gene Roddenberry.

That series ended in 2005. Four years later J.J. Abrams's Star Trek feature film attempted to "reboot" the Star Trek universe, with new actors playing characters from the original 60s show. I pretty much loathed everything about it, m...Read the entire review

'Pajamas Media' Network for Elitist Bloggers only:

The innocence of its name belies the true nature of this new virtual organism.

Meaning? PJs is a powerplay by a handful of elitist bloggers to carve out a new media empire for their personal (and financial) gratification.

"Pajamas Media, a new blogging venture designed to bring together top online writers, journalists and commentators under a single umbrella, today unveiled its editorial board as it prepares for its formal debut next month.

The announcement comes as Pajamas Media further realizes its vision of coalescing the internet's brightest minds and most compelling content into a single source that will, in turn, complement and re-define journalism in the 21st century."

So there you have it folks. The brightest stars in the virtual firmament who are going to "re-define journalism in the 21st century".

Can you believe the hype? The kahunas! A bunch of pompous self-serving goofballs if there ever was.

And speaking of balls, here I thought re-defining journalism is what the blogosphere is all about, even without the help of PJs et al. Silly me.

They are touting Glenn Reynolds as one of their greatest acquisitions. I must confess that I am all the more enlightened from his inspired and in depth analysis. Spewing his best Spock impersonations such as "indeed" and "indeed", or one of my personal favorites... "indeed".

Do you think perhaps they might (hopefully) consider (God willing) allowing us insignificant pee-ons add our (albeit smallish) comments to their omnipoobah flatulation? Well try this one on for size:

"Golly gee Instapundit, you sure are great. I was really hoping that if you might possibly consider linking to me some time. Pretty please, and I promise to forever be your grovelling fan... pant, pant, drool."

Or will it be the same old droning monologue we're all accustomed to - the sermon from the mount a la Instapun style.

Hell, if we wanted sermons we can always watch Anderson Cooper 360 report to the CNN situation room. So much for a blogging community folks.

Guys, you've got it all mixed up. If you want a one-sided conversation find a soap box and run for public office. Or better still make an application to CNN.

If you want to write a book then write the stinkin' book. If you want to build an exclusive empire so you can call the shots, give Bill Gates a call. But if you want to blog, join the community.

BUT damn it choose, because they're different. Got it? (Are you listening Glenn)?

Can somebody please explain to me how all this nonsense benefits the blogosphere? Oh yeah right, I forgot - it doesn't.

It sounds more like Al Gore's reinvention of the internet than anything else. So let's be clear boys and girls - it is the technology and all of our collective efforts that has re-defined journalism. Not just a few arrogant twits.

Not since the invention of the printing press has so much been given to the common folk. It is its inclusive, collaborative nature and community spirit that gives blogging its influential power.

HELLO! Are you listening? The blogosphere is not the exclusive playground of an old-boys network trying to elevate itself above the rest of us mere mortals.

That is bass-ackwards thinking, destructive and the last thing we need. Another media empire of self-important opportunists believing in their own press, shovelling verbal poop down our collective throats.

Think about it. Did we take down Dan Rather just to create a job opening for Reynolds? I don't think so. Personally I'd rather have Dan back (no pun intended). And for that matter I hear he's looking for work. Any takers?

It's the same old story. If it becomes popular the politicians have to control it, and the capitalists want to exploit it.

Not that I object to making money from blogging. God knows I could use the extra coin. But it is their elitist business model and its ominous implications that I find offensive.

It's called good old fashioned exploitation. The great American way. Look out Weblogs here we come.

Mark my words. The blogosphere is on the fast track to being hijacked by the control freaks and big business interests.

More restrictive laws and government intervention. Acquisitions and mergers, IPO offerings, get-rich-quick dot-com scam artists, media moguls, ABC, MSNBC, FOX, Pajamas party, whatever.

Sounding all too familiar? PJs is a cash grab. Plain and simple. And for whose benefit? The way it reads right now PJs will benefit only a few elitists, that's who.

Perhaps it got lost in the translation, but until they can find a more inclusive model the blogosphere needs this shite like a hole in the head.

Direct Internet Network Marketing

Today's message is on a topic I rarely see discussed
online, that being how to apply direct marketing
principles to your network marketing business.

To be fair, network marketing itself, does in fact
follow a direct marketing model, but not in the most
efficient way.

It's understandable why, in many highly successful
direct marketing businesses the phone is a key
component to creating results, but you don't see the
owner of the organization on the phone themselves,
rather they hire a phone room to do the dirty work.

When done properly it can be highly effective, but when
done improperly it can alienate your customers and give
them a bad impression of you and your business.

Just yesterday, which was Sunday, I was riding along in
the car with a friend when my phone rang. It turned out
to be a telemarketer who had pulled my name from the
list of customers of someone I had purchased an
information product from trying to solicit a seminar
sale.

I was wholly closed to this because it was Sunday and I
have better things to do than be sold a ticket to a
seminar that I had no interest in.

The phone is a very sensitive media and this should be
understood. Now, instead of looking favourably upon the
person I had purchased from I will forever hold a
negative vision of them because of this call.

So that's how telemarketing can be done wrong.

In network marketing you're taught to do 3 way calls,
which can be effective, but understand when you're
taught to do this without first being taught how to
generate your leads first you're basically being
reduced to a telemarketer.

Understand that the phone if you so choose to use it in
your business is only one piece of the puzzle and all
pieces must be present for optimum success.

It starts with lead generations. Where are you going to
find your prospective recruits? Online there are
several different ways to do this.

Next comes qualifying them. How are you going to get
them to raise their hand and show you that they are
interested in what you have? Are you going to use a
lead capture page or something else to have your leads
qualify themselves?

Next comes communication with your leads. How are you
going to constantly communicate with your leads so that
a trusting relationship is built? Are you going to use
email, teleseminars, personal phone follow up, or are
you going to do them all.

Finally we come to the offer. What are you going to
offer your prospects that they want and how are you
going to have them take action to get it? Will it be a
sales page that you use, direct mail?

In all this you have to understand that all parts of
the system must be congruent with each other. You can't
get traffic from people interested in health and sell
them personal development. It won't work optimally.

Further you can't have your leads opt into a lead
capture page for one thing and then in your email
follow up talk about something completely different.

It's all got to fit together.

And you've got to offer your prospects what they want.
So you have to know what they want. You can't guess at
this, because you don't know until you ask them.

It's like the game show "Family Feud" you don't get
points for giving the BEST answer you win by giving the
answer that most people polled said.

It's not about you, it's about them.

All these things must be in harmony for you to leverage
a direct marketing approach to network marketing most
effectively, it's not just getting some leads from a
leads company and calling them.

If you just do this you'll miss out on truly leveraging
what direct marketing should be for your network
marketing business, especially when we talk about the
Internet.

What if you could grow a network marketing organization
of 6057 in less than 2 years and personally recruit 401
people without picking up the phone? Imagine how
different you life could be. Here's the first step to
making that happen. Go here now:

A Tale Of Two Network Marketers And A Secret . . .

Joe Jones joins a network marketing company and says .
. .

"Wow this business looks great!

I can't believe how great this product is. I never knew
it existed until that day I luckily happened upon it
online, but ever sense that day I've been a different
person. The team I'm on is fantastic and I can't wait
to learn what they are going to teach me next.

This business is going to change my life and my sponsor
is teaching me things I never knew. I set a goal to
cover both my mortgage and car note with this business
and I gave my word not only to myself, but to my
sponsor as well, that it's happening and as far as I'm
concerned it's as good as done.

It's only a matter of time."

Bill Baxter joins the same network marketing company
and says . . .

"This Company looks pretty good, but the last time I
gave this a shot it didn't work. I'm only going to give
this go around two months and if I'm not making at
least $1000 a month I'm out of here. I think my sponsor
said something about a co-op. I'm gonna join and if
that doesn't grow my business then I'll know.

I think this stuff can work. I mean, I've seen it work
for so many other people, but they all get up on stage
and bring prospects to those business calls, I've done
that before and I'm not doing it again.

I've only got 4 hours to spare a week and if this
business doesn't grow with that sort of time you won't
see me around here in a month I can promise you that.
They say anyone can make it happen, yeah right . . ."

Six months later . . .

Joe is making double what he set out to as his goal and
Bill has moved on to three more network marketing
companies and hasn't made a dime yet.

I wonder why?

It's your belief system. It's a thermometer for you.
Where you set it is exactly where you go.

Where you go is exactly how people see you.

Believe big in you and bigger things than you thought
would happen will, but have little belief in yourself
and little to nothing happens.

It's your choice.

What do you believe about your business?

Are you going to make it happen or make sure it
doesn't? It all comes down to what you think.

And to be honest if you believe big you'll get there,
but you'll get there faster if you know a few secrets
to get you there faster.

Here is where you'll find them, the question is . . .
will you use them?

What if you could learn how to grow your network
marketing business the 2007 way, instead of having to
rely on what worked 30 years ago because your sponsor
doesn't know any better? Do you'd think you'd reach you
goals faster? Here's how to find out:

The Duality Of Internet Network Marketing

(This is an extract from our newsletter - if you would
like to find out more check out the resource box)

It's a beautiful morning here in Washington DC. I woke
up and went out side and just sat there for a few
minutes to listen. There's a light breeze and just
hearing the rustling of the leaves as gentle wind blows
on them is a powerfully calming feeling.

As I sat there I thought about the Internet and how we
use it. As I watched the leaves blow from one direction
to the next an extremely important principle popped
into my mind. Something I've never thought about
directly, but just as that gentle wind blew the leaves
from direction so does this affect your business, maybe
without you even knowing about it.

This may be one of the most important emails that I
ever send to you. If you can understand what I am about
to say you'll understand the true fabric of both the
Internet and using the Internet to grow your network
marketing business.

Understand this . . .

Just as there are two sides to everything, a ying and
yang to say, so are there two sides to your internet
business and many make the mistake by not taking note
of this.

There are several things that you can do to generate
targeted traffic to your site and for each and every
single one of them there are about 50 guys with
products telling you and me how to do them the best.
That's fine and it's actually a good sign because it
means there truly is more than one way to skin a cat
with any given traffic generation technique, but unless
you realize what you're doing you can put a great deal
of undue stress on yourself.

I don't mean know what you're doing in terms of being
an expert in any of this stuff, I mean a goal, a vision
of what your business is going to look like one year
from now, and then 5 and 10 years from now.

Without this you can easily put yourself in a position
where you're doing far too much for little to no
appreciable result and a mind full of mixed emotions
and fear.

Quite a few of the people that email me fall into this
trap. (It's not their fault, it just happens to us a
people if we're not aware of what's going on in our
mind and let our emotions lead us.)

Their emails go something like this . . .

"John I've been doing xyz and I've generated some
traffic, but no one is buying anything I'm scared,
frustrated, and I think I'm going to quite."

What you think is what generally happens so when I read
these words I can literally see the little spark that
started their business start to flutter out.

Further . . .

Even putting things like this into writing is the wrong
idea because it creates and transmits the wrong mental
vibe for success, and mostly likely will send you on a
downward spiral towards a negative outlook on your
business. And if you're not positive about your
business you're on the way out.

It's reactionary in nature. Entrepreneurs don't react
they create.

And all this happens because most don't really know
what they are doing. They have a vague idea that they
want more money right now and they've found a business
with an opportunity to fulfill that, but they don't
think past it.

This happened to me when I began and it left me open to
self victimization. Anything that promised me money now
I bought

and subsequently failed.

Understand this about the internet . . .

There are things that you can do that are quick fixes
and others that will build a foundation so that your
business continues to grow for years to come.

I chose to do the later, after trying the other way.

The strategies and the mental focus differ
significantly.

If you think I need to set up a PPC campaign so that I
can get people into my business today because I need
money right now then you'll most likely do the
following.

You'll find the quickest and easiest way to put up a
vaguely targeted Google Adwords campaign and just throw
it out there to see what sticks.

Most of the stuff won't. And you'll say I generated
some traffic but nothing is happening.

On the other hand, if you think with a long term
perspective in mind on your business when you approach
your marketing, even with that same exact PPC campaign
you'll do things totally differently.

You'll say I want this campaign to still produce
targeted traffic a year from now and I don't want to
have to keep updating it all the time so let me make
sure when I do my research I do it thoroughly so I
won't have to do it again.

It will take longer to do, but the results are much
much better both in the short and long term.

Do you see what I'm saying here?

It's where you focus you mind in your marketing that
will dictate your results.

Think first of what you want and then create your
internet advertising campaign around that, and what you
want has to be more specific than just some targeted
traffic and some leads and some people in my business
so that I make money now.

Have a real defined end in mind before the game begins.

And don't think this faulty mindset is something that
only happens to us as marketers. It happens to owners
of network marketing companies that go out of business
in just a few short years and those guys launching
product after product just to see what we will buy.

These people also have a frantic "now now now" frame of
mind.

Think about the type of people and companies you are
dealing with just as much as yourself when doing your
marketing.

Stay as far away from those with vaguely defined goals
and visions of what they want no matter if they are
your upline leader, company owner, or the guy you're
thinking about buying an eBook from.

Why?

Well remember how I said I was listening and watching
the leaves blow in the wind?

If you or you follow the advice of a person who only
thinks about right now well then you become just like
those leaves. You leave yourself open to whatever
weather blows you're way.

If you plan and set out only to do those things that
fit your plan you root yourself deep into the ground
like a sturdy oak tree that ain't moving.

Internet Network Marketing is about creating long term
stable wealth online, not vague ideas on how to get
rich quick only to be left broke. If you'd like to
learn the real secrets to creating a long term stable
online business that will allow you retire on here's
where to learn it live and in person:

Some REAL Results In Internet Network Marketing . . .

(This is an extract from our newsletter - if you would
like to find out more check out the resource box)

The biggest problem I have with a lot of the stuff that
I see people selling to others online is that I
sometimes wonder if they are actually using the
information that they are peddling or if they are just
unloading it on the public.

If there is one thing that I will consistently be is
the biggest testimonial that Internet MLM Success works
and continues to work, so I want to share with you the
complete results of an advertising campaign that I
carried out recently in my OWN current Internet network
marketing efforts.

A few months ago I placed an ad online.

It was costly at $695.

It took about a month for the ad to run, but here are
the results . . .

The ad brought in 2818 unique views at a cost of $.25
cent per click (not so bad) . . .

It generated over 460 leads at $1.51 a lead.

Here's the IMPORTANT info . . .

From those leads I had a total of 48 people join my
team at a cost of 14.47 per new team member.

Of those 16 upgraded to a premium level in my company
on the front end, so that's an upgrade at $43.44.

All this while I was away at work.

That's what Internet network marketing is all about.

It's not about buying leads, it's about leverage.

It's about finding groups of people that are interested
in your product or service and then giving them the
opportunity see what you have to offer and THEN letting
the interested parties take action.

That way you never deal with anyone that isn't
motivated for success, and you're making the absolute
best use of your time as a marketer.

That's the way to do if you asked me . . .

What if you could guarantee you make money in your
business regardless of whether or not any joins your
business?

Using TCP Keepalive to Detect Network Errors

This is not only a H.323 topic, but since H.323 also uses TCP connections, it applies to H.323 as well:

To detect network errors and signaling connection problems, you can enable TCP keep alive feature. It will increase signaling bandwidth used, but as bandwidth utilized by signaling channels is low from its nature, the increase should not be significant. Moreover, you can control it using keep alive timeout.

The problem is that most system use keep alive timeout of 7200 seconds, which means the system is notified about a dead connection after 2 hours. You probably want this time to be shorter, like one minute or so. On each operating system, the adjustment is done in a different way.

After settings all parameters, it's recommended to check whether the feature works correctly - just make a test call and unplug a network cable at either side of the call. Then see if the call terminates after the configured timeout.

Linux systems

Use sysctl -A to get a list of available kernel variables
and grep this list for net.ipv4 settings (sysctl -A | grep net.ipv4).
There should exist the following variables:
net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_time: time of connection inactivity after which
the first keep alive request is sent
net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_probes: number of keep alive requests retransmitted
before the connection is considered broken
net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_intvl: time interval between keep alive probes

You can manipulate with these settings using the following command:

sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_time=60 net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_probes=3
    net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_intvl=10

This sample command changes TCP keepalive timeout to 60 seconds with 3 probes,
10 seconds gap between each. With this, your application will detect dead TCP
connections after 90 seconds (60 + 10 + 10 + 10).

FreeBSD and MacOS X

For the list of available TCP settings (FreeBSD 4.8 an up and 5.4):

sysctl -A | grep net.inet.tcp

net.inet.tcp.keepidle - Amount of time, in milliseconds, that the (TCP)
connection must be idle before keepalive probes (if enabled) are sent.

net.inet.tcp.keepintvl - The interval, in milliseconds, between
keepalive probes sent to remote machines. After TCPTV_KEEPCNT (default
8) probes are sent, with no response, the (TCP)connection is dropped.

net.inet.tcp.always_keepalive - Assume that SO_KEEPALIVE is set on all
TCP connections, the kernel will periodically send a packet to the
remote host to verify the connection is still up.

therefore formula to calculate maximum TCP inactive connection time is
following:

net.inet.tcp.keepidle + (net.inet.tcp.keepintvl x 8)

the result is in milliseconds.

therefore, by setting
net.inet.tcp.keepidle = 10000
net.inet.tcp.keepintvl = 5000
net.inet.tcp.always_keepalive =1 (must be 1 always)

the system will disconnect a call when TCP connection is dead for:
10000 + (5000 x 8) = 50000 msec (50 sec)

To make system remember these settings at startup, you should add them
to /etc/sysctl.conf file

Solaris

For the list of available TCP settings:

ndd /dev/tcp ?

Keepalive related variables:
- tcp_keepalive_interval - idle timeout

Example:
ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_keepalive_interval 60000

New Alabama Relocation Network makes debut

A new network of websites which features the largest 494 cities in Alabama will make it's debut statewide in December. Called the ePartners Network, the statewide web will make it easier for consumers to find properties all across the state of Alabama. In particular, the major cities, Montgomery, Huntsville, Birmingham, and Mobile and their surrounding communities are linked and cross linked so consumers can easily search for homes and real estate from one single location.

The state affiliate Broker, Mike Carraway (Broker, Access Realty), has already introduced the network to real estate agents in Birmingham, Huntsville, Jasper, Cullman, Hoover, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Montgomery, and several other Alabama cities. Each city has it's own site and weblog and an agent can elect to be the exclusive real estate agent for their city to help consumers find what they want or to market their property statewide.

This is the first time in the history of real estate that geographic boundaries have been erased. In the past, agents and brokers have worked in certain geographic areas and basically limited themselves to that area, even though they were licensed to do business anywhere in the state. Now, for the first time, those boundaries are gone. An agent licensed to do business in the state can assist customers finding homes or locating a local agent from anywhere.

This new network will be a plus for all real estate ancillary services as well. Mortgage companies, insurance companies, and others can now advertsie their services on the network either statewide or in a local community.

The ePartners Network will change the way that the real estate business is done in other ways as well. It will serve as the first statewide, and even nationwide, platform for paperless real estate transactions.

Two Transport Biosecurity Projects Approved Under Wean-to-Harvest Biosecurity Research Program

Farmscape for October 30, 2024

Two research projects approved through the Swine Health Information Center's Wean-to-Harvest Biosecurity Research Program will focus on reducing the risk of swine transport vehicle contamination at hog processing plants and at deadstock disposal sites.
The Swine Health Information Center’s Wean-to-Harvest Biosecurity Research Program, funded in collaboration with the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research and Pork Checkoff, has approved funding for research intended to help improve transport vehicle biosecurity where the transport trailer interfaces with the harvest facility and at the deadstock disposal site.
SHIC Associate Director Dr. Lisa Becton says two projects will be conducted by the University of Minnesota.

Quote-Dr. Lisa Becton-Swine Health Information Center:
The first project is quantifying trailer contamination rates at the harvest plant interface.
The goal of this project is to gather and analyze data on viral contamination rates in trailers and this will be looking at a 12-month period over time at the plant interface.
It's going to assess the rates of PED, PRRS and Senaca Valey Virus and the goal is to understand what are the epidemiology factors related to trailers and unloading for the ability to either increase or decrease contamination rates, to understand what happens at that interface and then determine what are things that we can do to mitigate those risks.
The second project is going to be assessing viral contamination of mortality disposal structures at wean to harvest farms.
It's going to describe what the current procedures are for disposal and assess viral contamination in the environment around those containers but also to assess what is happening at these disposal structures such as compost and dead box and to detect and test what could be a decontamination strategy.
Again, the goal is to help identify risks and to develop a strategy to mitigate those risks.

Dr. Becton says the two projects will be conducted over a 12 month span to take into account seasonal changes and how those changes can drive the risk of disease introduction.

Saskatchewan Pork Industry Symposium Offers Pork Producers, Industry Leaders, Government Representatives, Suppliers Networking Opportunities

Farmscape for November 1, 2024

The Communications and Marketing Coordinator with Sask Pork says the 47th edition of Saskatchewan Pork Industry Symposium will provide an opportunity for pork producers to learn the latest in research and technology development, to interact with government officials and industry leaders and to network.
The Saskatchewan Pork Development Board's Saskatchewan Pork Industry Symposium 2024 is scheduled for Saskatoon Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sask Pork Communications and Marketing Coordinator Steve Seto says the symposium focusses on fostering an environment that supports sustainability, efficiency and profitability.

Quote-Steve Seto-Saskatchewan Pork Development Board:
The symposium is our annual event where many of our producers come to Saskatoon for two days.
It does give our producers a great opportunity to talk with industry leaders.
Water quality is probably going to be a big one, just making sure that the water quality up to par.
The changes to the Code of practice with the Canadian pork Council will probably be discussed.
Funding and government grants, I assume will be a big talking point between producers and some of the government officials that will be there.
Always trying to make things more sustainable and efficient and helping our producers be profitable is kind of our main goal every year, making sure the industry is very strong going forward.
Those are going to be some of the key highlights but it's also a great opportunity to just talk and network not only with other producers but industry leaders.
We've been doing it now for 47 years and it's a really good opportunity for people to come together.

Two Types of Problems

The last thing to do before I issue the next release is to eliminate the log file and move the messages that were reported in the log file into the File Information section of the Everything Report.

In doing so, I am revisiting all the error and warning messages that Behold produced. I'm rewriting them and making their text customizable (so different languages can be supported) and making them selectable (so they can be turned off if you don't want them).

I see that I can classify them into two types: Possible GEDCOM problems and possible data errors.

GEDCOM standards have changed over time, and every program outputs its data into GEDCOM in slightly different forms, often not conforming to the latest GEDCOM standard. I've made Behold to be very forgiving so that it reads everything possible. But when Behold reads files that may be GEDCOM but seem to have something wrong with them, Behold will report these to let you know. Maybe the file was truncated or maybe the character set was wrong. But Behold will still read as much data as possible from the file and try to continue processing. Often you can just ignore these GEDCOM errors knowing that Behold will read everything it can.

But you will want to look at the problems reported as possible data errors. These will tell you where you might need to fix your data. For example, there might be duplicate IDs, multiple husbands, missing links or undefined sources. To fix these, you'll need to go into your genealogy program that created the GEDCOM and update your data. When version 2 of Behold is out, you'll be able to fix your data right in Behold.

The messages up to now were are real hodge-podge. I added them as I developed. They are inconsistent in form and style. So I am now turning each into one of the two types: GEDCOM problems and data problems, improving their default text and getting them to work in a consistent way. There are over 50 of these messages, and I'm going through them one by one. This should take a couple of days and then the new release will be out.

Two Problems in Two Days

So first I was told that Behold was not detecting the new version when you "Check Online for New Version".

What had happened was I went from version 0.98.9d to 0.98.9.5. I changed from the letter suffix to the point number for Vista compatibility.

Version 0.98.9d detects the new version okay, but 0.98.9c, b, or a do not. Those three previous versions checked to see that the running program's version is LESS than the online version. But that's a problem because "." is greater than "a" or "b" or "c" in a computer string comparison. I changed the check in the 0.98.9d version that it be UNEQUAL rather than LESS than. So it's not a problem if you previously had upgraded to 0.98.9d.

The bottom line here is that if you still have the 0.98.9a, b or c versions, you will not be able to use the "Check Online for New Version" to upgrade. Instead, you'll have to go to the Behold download page, click on the "Click Here to Download" and say "Run". That will run the new install file and put the newest 0.98.9.5 version on your machine. You won't have to re-register.

The second problem was that Behold stopped working in Windows 98. I didn't realize that I still had a user using Windows 98, but I do. It ended up being a memory call that I purposely changed so that more than 2 GB could be reported. Unfortunately that call causes an error in Windows 98.

So I found a way to make the correct call depending on the Operating System. Google searches do wonders. It found the method to do this in a forum, and it didn't matter that the forum was in German.

So if you are still running in Windows 98, let me know, and I'll give you a link to the fix you need.

Two Things Learned

3 great days in Nashville. 2 lousy days in airports. But it was a great getaway.

After taking the listing I had of that side of the family, I realized a couple of things:

(1) The research I have done and questioning of older ancestors many years ago was quite comprehensive. There was not much our relatives were able to add to that. I guess that's both good and bad.

(2) It is hard in the Behold listing to easily find siblings in the same generation when they are far from each other because of their descendants intervening. There is not much indentation for generation levels, and there's nothing on the paper that can help you find the next sibling.

That latter point is something I have thought about for awhile. My original concept was to draw lines on the left margin to connect parents with their children. But implementing that was non-trivial, especially when I wanted it to appear the same when printed and when exported to HTML or RTF. But I think I will want to try to implement that before beta if I can.
