A significant part of Web data is available only through the login and password protected applications. As that data is very important for the usefulness of described process, proposed infrastructure needs to support authorized access to user's personal data. In this paper we propose a semantically enhanced Web portal that presents unique personalized user's entry to the domain-specific Web information. We also propose an identity management system that supports authorized access to the protected Web data. This paper presents an approach to support the automatic generation of relationships among document images by exploiting Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR). We developed the LinkDI (Linking of Document Images) service, which extracts and indexes document images content, computes its latent semantics, and defines relationships among images as hyperlinks. LinkDI was experimented with document images repositories, and its performance was evaluated by comparing the quality of the relationships created among textual documents as well as among their respective document images. Considering those same document images, we ran further experiments in order to compare the performance of LinkDI when it exploits or not the LSI technique. Experimental results showed that LSI can mitigate the effects of usual OCR misrecognition, which reinforces the feasibility of LinkDI relating OCR output with high degradation. Full Article

sem Towards Classification of Web Ontologies for the Emerging Semantic Web By www.jucs.org Published On :: 2011-07-20T10:20:32+02:00 The massive growth in ontology development has opened new research challenges such as ontology management, search and retrieval for the entire semantic web community. These results in many recent developments, like OntoKhoj, Swoogle, OntoSearch2, that facilitate tasks user have to perform. These semantic web portals mainly treat ontologies as plain texts and use the traditional text classification algorithms for classifying ontologies in directories and assigning predefined labels rather than using the semantic knowledge hidden within the ontologies. These approaches suffer from many types of classification problems and lack of accuracy, especially in the case of overlapping ontologies that share common vocabularies. In this paper, we define an ontology classification problem and categorize it into many sub-problems. We present a new ontological methodology for the classification of web ontologies, which has been guided by the requirements of the emerging Semantic Web applications and by the lessons learnt from previous systems. The proposed framework, OntClassifire, is tested on 34 ontologies with a certain degree of overlapping domain, and effectiveness of the ontological mechanism is verified. It benefits the construction, maintenance or expansion of ontology directories on the semantic web that help to focus on the crawling and improving the quality of search for the software agents and people. We conclude that the use of a context specific knowledge hidden in the structure of ontologies gives more accurate results for the ontology classification. Full Article

The use of spatial and visual characteristics in wikis is important to improve human comprehension, creation and organization of knowledge. Another important capability in wikis is to allow machines to process knowledge. Wikis that formally structure knowledge for this purpose are called semantic wikis. This paper describes how ShyWiki can make use of spatial hypertext in order to be a semantic wiki. ShyWiki can represent knowledge at different levels of formality. Users of ShyWiki can annotate the content and represent semantic relations without being experts of semantic web data description languages. The spatial hypertext features make it suitable for users to represent unstructured knowledge and implicit graphic relations among concepts. In addition, semantic web and spatial hypertext features are combined to represent structured knowledge. The semantic web features of ShyWiki improve navigation and publish the wiki knowledge as RDF resources, including the implicit relations that are analyzed using a spatial parser. Full Article

sem A Study on the Effectiveness of an Undergraduate Online Teaching Laboratory With Semantic Mechanism From a Student Perspective By Published On :: 2020-08-30 Aim/Purpose: The current study was conducted to investigate the students’ perceived satisfaction with the use of a semantic-based online laboratory, which provides students with a search mechanism for laboratory resources, such as instruments and devices. Background: The increasing popularity of using online teaching labs, as an important element of experiential learning in STEM education, is because they represent a collection of integrated tools that allow students and teachers to interact and work collaboratively, whereas they provide an enriched learning content delivery mechanism. Moreover, several research studies have proposed various approaches for online teaching laboratories. However, there are hardly any studies that examine the student satisfaction provided by online laboratories based on students’ experiential learning. Methodology: To measure the effectiveness of the laboratory, we performed a case study in a Computer Fundamentals online course in which undergraduate students were able to manage devices and instruments remotely. Participants were a sample of 50 third semester students of Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology Administration who were divided in experimental and control groups (online laboratory vs. traditional manner). Given a laboratory assignment, students were able to carry out the management of devices and instruments through a LabView virtual environment and web services. The data of the experiment were collected through two questionnaires from both groups. The first is a system usability score (SUS) questionnaire concerning lab usability and the second one students’ cognitive load. Contribution: The results of the study showed a high correlation between usability and cognitive load-satisfaction of students who used the online teaching laboratory compared to the students who did not use it. Findings: On the one hand, the online laboratory provided students with an easy way to share and deploy instruments and devices, thus enhancing system usability. On the other hand, it offered important facilities which enabled students to customize the search for instruments and devices, which certainly had a positive impact on the relationship between cognitive load and satisfaction. Recommendations for Practitioners: In this work we propose an intuitive laboratory interface as well as easiness to use but challenging and capable of providing similar experiences to the traditional laboratory. Recommendation for Researchers: This study is one of the first to analyze the cognitive load-satisfaction relationship and compare it with usability scores. Impact on Society: Our analyses make an important contribution to the literature by suggesting a correlation analysis comparing the results of experimental and control groups that participated in this research work, in terms of usability and cognitive load-satisfaction. Future Research: Future work will also investigate other methodological aspects of instructional design with the aim to improve personalized learning and reinforce collaborative experiences, as well as to deal with problems related to laboratory access, such as authentication, scheduling, and interoperability. sem Measurement of Doctoral Students’ Intention to Use Online Learning: A SEM Approach Using the TRAM Model By Published On :: 2023-08-22 Aim/Purpose: The study aims to supplement existing knowledge of information systems by presenting empirical data on the factors influencing the intentions of doctoral students to learn through online platforms. Background: E-learning platforms have become popular among students and professionals over the past decade. However, the intentions of the doctoral students are not yet known. They are an important source of knowledge production in academics by way of teaching and research. Methodology: The researchers collected data from universities in the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) using a survey method from doctoral students using a convenience sampling method. The model studied was the Technology Readiness and Acceptance Model (TRAM), an integration of the Technology Readiness Index (TRI) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Contribution: TRAM provides empirical evidence that it positively predicts behavioral intentions to learn from online platforms. Hence, the study validated the model among doctoral students from the perspective of a developing nation. Findings: The model variables predicted 49% of the variance in doctoral students’ intent. The TRAM model identified motivating constructs such as optimism and innovativeness as influencing TAM predictors. Finally, doctoral students have positive opinions about the usefulness and ease of use of online learning platforms. Recommendations for Practitioners: Academic leaders motivate scholars to use online platforms, and application developers to incorporate features that facilitate ease of use. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers can explore the applicability of TRAM in other developing countries and examine the role of cultural and social factors in the intent to adopt online learning. We investigate the informal interdependencies among marketing, finance, operation, and management core courses in these schools. By conducting hypothesis tests on a large dataset, we identify a flexible network showing the preferred sequencing of these courses to improve students' performance as measured by the course grade. Better performances in this context may also lead to higher retention-rates and lower time-to-degree. We recommend taking Finance or Finance and Management as the first course(s). Marketing should be the next course before or concurrent with Operations Management. Regarding the lower division courses, it is recommended to take Statistics before Economics and Accounting courses and Accounting before or concurrent with Economics. Background: This study investigates the CSFs (i.e., Strategic Leadership, Employee Training, System Quality, and Information Quality) that impact the usage intention of KMS in mobile contexts which have been neglected. Since users normally consider the usefulness belief in a system before usage, this study examines the role of perceived benefits as a mediator between the CSFs and usage intention. Methodology: A survey-based research approach in the Malaysian semiconductor industry was employed via an integrated model of TAM and ISSM. At a response rate of 59.52%, the findings of this study were based on 375 usable responses. The data collected was analyzed using the Partial Least Squares with SmartPLS 3.0. Contribution: This study contributes to the body of knowledge in the areas of mobile technology acceptance and knowledge management. Specifically, it helps to validate the integrated model of TAM and ISSM with the CSFs from knowledge management and information system. In addition, it provides the would-be adopters of MKMS with valuable guidelines and insights to consider before embarking on the adoption stage. Findings: The findings suggest that Employee Training and Information Quality have a positive significant relationship with Perceived MKMS Benefits. On the contrary, Strategic Leadership, System Quality, and Perceived User-friendliness showed an insignificant relationship with Perceived MKMS Benefits. Additionally, Employee Training and Information Quality have an indirect relationship with MKMS Usage Intention which is mediated by Perceived MKMS Benefits. Recommendations for Practitioners: The findings are valuable for managers, engineers, KM practitioners, KM consultants, MKMS developers, and mobile device producers to enhance MKMS usage intention. Additionally, the mediation effect of TAM via Perceived Usefulness (i.e., perceived MKMS benefits) on usage intention of MKMS should be further investigated with other CSFs. Future Research: Future studies could perhaps include other critical factors from both KM and IS as part of the external variables. Furthermore, Perceived Ease of Use (i.e., Perceived User-friendly) should be tested as a mediator in the future, together with Perceived Usefulness (i.e., perceived MKMS Benefits) to compare which would be a more powerful predictor of usage intention. The primary focus of this paper is to develop an effective medicine recommendation approach for recommending suitable medications to patients based on their specific medical conditions. Background: With a growing number of people becoming more conscious about their health, there has been a notable increase in the use of online healthcare platforms and e-services as a means of diagnosis. As the internet continues to evolve, these platforms and e-services are expected to play an even more significant role in the future of healthcare. For instance, WebMD and similar platforms offer valuable tools and information to help manage patients’ health, such as searching for medicines based on their medical conditions. Nonetheless, patients often find it arduous and time-consuming to sort through all the available medications to find the ones that match their specific medical conditions. To address this problem, personalized recommender systems have emerged as a practical solution for mitigating the burden of information overload and data sparsity-related issues that are frequently encountered on online healthcare platforms. Methodology: The study utilized a dataset of MC ratings obtained from WebMD, a popular healthcare website. Patients on this website can rate medications based on three criteria, including medication effectiveness, ease of use, and satisfaction, using a scale of 1 to 5. The WebMD MC rating dataset used in this study contains a total of 32,054 ratings provided by 2,136 patients for 845 different medicines. The proposed HSMCCF approach consists of two primary modules: a semantic filtering module and a multi-criteria filtering module. The semantic filtering module is designed to address the issues of data sparsity and new item problems by utilizing a medicine taxonomy that sorts medicines according to medical conditions and makes use of semantic relationships between them. This module identifies the medicines that are most likely to be relevant to patients based on their current medical conditions. The multi-criteria filtering module, on the other hand, enhances the approach’s ability to capture the complexity of patient preferences by considering multiple criteria and preferences through a unique similarity metric that incorporates both distance and structural similarities. This module ensures that patients receive more accurate and personalized medication recommendations. Moreover, a medicine reputation score is employed to ensure that the approach remains effective even when dealing with limited ratings or new items. Overall, the combination of these modules makes the proposed approach more robust and effective in providing personalized medicine recommendations for patients. Contribution: This study addresses the medicine recommendation problem by proposing a novel approach called Hybrid Semantic-based Multi-Criteria Collaborative Filtering (HSMCCF). This approach effectively recommends medications for patients based on their medical conditions and is specifically designed to overcome issues related to data sparsity and new item recommendations that are commonly encountered on online healthcare platforms. The proposed approach addresses data sparsity and new item issues by incorporating a semantic filtering module and a multi-criteria filtering module. The semantic filtering module sorts medicines based on medical conditions and uses semantic relationships to identify relevant ones. The multi-criteria filtering module accurately captures patient preferences and provides precise recommendations using a novel similarity metric. Additionally, a medicine reputation score is also employed to further expand potential neighbors, improving predictive accuracy and coverage, particularly in sparse datasets or new items with few ratings. With the HSMCCF approach, patients can receive more personalized recommendations that are tailored to their unique medical needs and conditions. By leveraging a combination of semantic-based and multi-criteria filtering techniques, the proposed approach can effectively address the challenges associated with medicine recommendations on online healthcare platforms. Findings: The proposed HSMCCF approach demonstrated superior effectiveness compared to benchmark recommendation methods in multi-criteria rating datasets in terms of enhancing both prediction accuracy and coverage while effectively addressing data sparsity and new item challenges. Recommendations for Practitioners: By applying the proposed medicine recommendation approach, practitioners can develop a medicine recommendation system that can be integrated into online healthcare platforms. Patients can then utilize this system to make better-informed decisions regarding the medications that are most suitable for their specific medical conditions. This personalized approach to medication recommendations can ultimately lead to improved patient satisfaction. Recommendation for Researchers: Integrating patient medicine reviews is a promising way for researchers to elevate the proposed medicine recommendation approach. By leveraging patient reviews, the approach can gain a more comprehensive understanding of how certain medications perform for specific medical conditions. Additionally, exploring the relationship between MC-based ratings using an improved aggregation function can potentially enhance the accuracy of medication predictions. This involves analyzing the relationship between different criteria, such as medication effectiveness, ease of use, and satisfaction of the patients, and determining the optimal weighting for each criterion based on patient feedback. A more holistic approach that incorporates patient reviews and an improved aggregation function can enable the proposed medicine recommendation approach to provide more personalized and accurate recommendations to patients. Impact on Society: To mitigate the risk of infection during the COVID-19 pandemic, the promotion of online healthcare services was actively encouraged. This allowed patients to continue accessing care and receiving treatment while adhering to physical distancing guidelines and shielding measures where necessary. As a result, the implementation of personalized healthcare services for patients is expected to be a major disruptive force in healthcare in the coming years. This study proposes a personalized medicine recommendation approach that can effectively address this issue and aid patients in making informed decisions about the medications that are most suitable for their specific medical conditions. Future Research: One way that may enhance the proposed medicine recommendation approach is to incorporate patient medicine reviews.
