Europe's rivers ‘highly contaminated’ with long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids

Long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are persistent chemicals with proven toxic effects. This study estimated the emissions and concentrations of two such chemicals, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in 11 of Europe's most populated river catchments. Estimated emissions were lowest in the Thames and highest in the Rhine, while the EU environmental quality standard for PFOS was exceeded in all rivers. This study provides a picture of PFAAs contamination in rivers across Europe, and makes recommendations for achieving reductions.

Highly dispersed metal catalysts

The present invention relates to a novel method for preparing a new type of catalyst for the oxidation of CO in a reactant gas or air. The method provides the preparation of a catalyst having nano-sized metal particles and a capping agent deposited on a solid support. The size and distribution of the metal particles can be easily controlled by adjusting reaction condition and the capping agent used. The catalyst prepared has high activity at low temperature toward selective oxidation of CO and is stable over an extended period of time. Tapping the Talents of Highly Skilled Immigrants in the United States: Takeaways from Experts Summit

Economists project a shortage of 5 million U.S. workers with postsecondary education and training by 2020. Yet 2 million immigrant college graduates in the United States are either unemployed or work in jobs that require no more than a high school degree. How can this skill underutilization, known as "brain waste," be remedied? MPI asked the experts, and this report summarizes their discussion and recommendations.

(1 + epsilon)-class Classification: an Anomaly Detection Method for Highly Imbalanced or Incomplete Data Sets

Anomaly detection is not an easy problem since distribution of anomalous samples is unknown a priori. We explore a novel method that gives a trade-off possibility between one-class and two-class approaches, and leads to a better performance on anomaly detection problems with small or non-representative anomalous samples. The method is evaluated using several data sets and compared to a set of conventional one-class and two-class approaches.

Domain Adaptation in Highly Imbalanced and Overlapping Datasets. (arXiv:2005.03585v1 [cs.LG])

In many Machine Learning domains, datasets are characterized by highly imbalanced and overlapping classes. Particularly in the medical domain, a specific list of symptoms can be labeled as one of various different conditions. Some of these conditions may be more prevalent than others by several orders of magnitude. Here we present a novel unsupervised Domain Adaptation scheme for such datasets. The scheme, based on a specific type of Quantification, is designed to work under both label and conditional shifts. It is demonstrated on datasets generated from Electronic Health Records and provides high quality results for both Quantification and Domain Adaptation in very challenging scenarios. Potential benefits of using this scheme in the current COVID-19 outbreak, for estimation of prevalence and probability of infection, are discussed.
