Countries should address disruptive effects of the digital economy

Countries are making increased efforts to develop their digital economies in a way that will maximise social and economic benefits, but now need to address the risk of disruption in areas like privacy and jobs, according to a new OECD report.

The digital disruption of productivity

The UK’s tallest mountain is Ben Nevis in Scotland. Recently, it became one metre taller, standing now at 1 345m rather than 1 344m above sea level. Of course, the mountain did not actually grow. Rather, the team of Ordnance Survey experts who re-measured it for the first time since 1949 were able to do so more accurately because of improvements in technology, and specifically through the use of GPS.

Smog disrupts Northern Railways

Hardnews Bureau

The smog that has engulfed large swathes of Northern India has effectively brought the Northern Indian Railways to a standstill

Witnessing delays and cancellations due to the heavy smog that has descended over large parts of North India, several long-distance trains reaching stations such as New Delhi, Chandigarh and Lucknow and others have been held up by more than twelve hours. This disruption has caused several problems, many people have been stranded, unable to get to their workplaces on time, while others have been seen lying on the platform.

Trains that have been delayed:

Kamyakhya Express Kamkhaya Junction, Maligaon Guwahati Anand Vihar, New Delhi + 20h
Chhattisgarh Express Bilaspur, Chhatisgarh Amritsar, Punjab +11h
Heerakund Express Amritsar Jn, Punjab Vishakhapatanam, Andhra Pradesh +5h
Lucknow-Chandigarh Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chandigarh, Punjab +5h
Unchahar Express Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh Chandigarh, Punjab +5h50m

According to the Northern Railways, over 25 trains were delayed in the Ambala division on Thursday. The morning Shatabdi, operating between Chandigarh and Delhi, was delayed by three hours and failed to reach at the scheduled time. “The trains are running late due to smog in Delhi and other parts of the northern states. On Thursday as well several trains were delayed. We don’t see any change in the coming days. The situation will improve only if the smoggy weather ends,” said an official to news agencies.

Several trains have been cancelled as well, which include: The Ajmer-Jammu Tavi Express, New Delhi-Amritsar Express, Allahabad-Saharanpur Express, Amritsar-Jai Nagar express, Malda-Delhi Farakka Express, Poorvottar Express from Amritsar to Silchar and Pooja Express from Jammu to Ajmer.

Increasing aridity will disrupt soil nutrient cycles in global drylands

The drying of soils under global warming could disrupt the balance of nutrients in large areas of the Earth's land surface, according to new research. The study focused on ‘drylands' – arid areas with low levels of rainfall – which support over 38%% of the world's population. Such nutrient imbalances could diminish the provision of ecosystem services, such as food production and carbon storage, the researchers say.

Moth behaviour disrupted by street lighting, may affect pollination

Street lighting reduces the number of moths at ground level and increases flight activity at the level of the lights, shows new research. Less pollen was transported by moths at lit sites in the UK study as a result of the disruptive effects on moth behaviour. The study highlights the need to consider both the direct and indirect ecological impacts of artificial light.

More research needed on endocrine disrupters

There has been an established increase in reproductive disorders and other hormonal diseases, according to a recent European Environment Agency (EEA) report. The report documents a growing body of research that indicates this increase is influenced by growing levels of chemical pollutants in the environment known as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs).

disrupt

Dangerously high levels of endocrine disrupting chemicals found in marine sediments

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can interfere with the hormonal systems of both humans and wildlife. New research quantifying EDCs in marine environments in Greece found concentrations which present significant risks to sediment-dwelling organisms.

Hormones in wastewater disrupt fish reproduction over generations

Farmers could help to maintain populations of bees and other pollinators by sowing inexpensive seed mixes on their land, a new study suggests. Researchers surveyed pollinators visiting study plots in Berkshire, UK, and explored how sowing different seed mixes and using different management techniques affected the flowers produced and the pollinators visiting them.

Are endocrine disrupting chemicals responsible for downward trends in male fertility?

A growing body of evidence suggests that endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) are contributing to declines in fertility. This case-control study found that EDCs were associated with changes to sex hormones and risk of subfertility in men. The researchers say environmental levels of these chemicals should be reduced to protect male fertility.

High levels of endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in sediments and fish from the Italian River Po and its Lambro tributary

Researchers have recommended that fish from some sections of the River Po and the River Lambro, one of the Italian River Po tributaries, should not be eaten due to high levels of some endocrine-disrupting chemicals in the river sediments and fish. This recommendation is based on an extensive update regarding pollution levels of such substances in the rivers.

Exposure to BPA derivatives: newer analogues may also have endocrine-disrupting effects

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical that is widespread in the environment. Researchers reviewed and critically discussed the sources and routes of human exposure to chlorinated derivatives (ClxBPA) and alternatives to BPA (BPF, BPS), as well as their metabolism, toxicity and concentrations in human tissues. The researchers suggest BPA alternatives and derivatives may have similar effects, and provide directions for future research.

Micro-organism communities disrupted near world's largest ship recycling yard

Pollutants have been shown to alter the structure of bacterial communities in the coastal waters around the Alang-Sosiya shipbreaking yard in north-west India. The research analysed seawater from two sites near Alang-Sosiya and from pristine sea water taken 10 km from the coast. The results provide a clearer idea of changes to the microbial ecology near a large ship recycling yard.

Waste-water analysis highlights exposure to endocrine-disrupting phthalate plasticisers

Researchers in Spain have analysed waste water to calculate levels of exposure to phthalates in individuals. The calculations showed that levels of four types of phthalate exceeded safe daily limits in some of the sites studied, with levels of exposure in children being of particular concern. Using the results of waste-water analysis in this way can identify areas where action may need to be taken to lower exposure.

Seven UV filters with potential endocrine-disrupting properties found at low levels in eggs of seven wild bird species, national park, Spain

Personal Care Products (PCPs) are of increasing global concern, as thousands of tonnes enter the environment every year. Similar to persistent organic pollutants (POPs), some substances used in PCPs are toxic, persist in the environment and accumulate in the bodies of organisms that take them in. This study focused on the presence of ultraviolet filters (UV-Fs) (used in PCPs such as sunscreens and cosmetics) in the unhatched eggs of wild birds.
