BON-in-a-Box workshop

http://geobon.org/bon-in-a-box-workshop-colombia/

GEO BON in partnership with Colombia’s Instituto von Humboldt held the first BON in a Box (Biodiversity Observation Network in a Box) regional workshop in Armenia, Colombia.

Over 50 participants from Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and several ‘external’ GEO BON participants convened over 4 days to enthusiastically define the structure and content for this regional toolkit for biodiversity observations.

The workshop outcomes are directly guiding the development of the first prototype of this web-based, customizable toolkit which will be released in November of this year.

EU BON was represented by Hannu Saarenmaa, who gave a presentation on using GBIF IPT for sharing sample based data and the related new data standards.

Inside the Box

As traditional business models continue to break down, entrepreneurs have their sights on one more area to disrupt: traditional orthodontics.

Also: biodegradable six-pack holders finally go on the market; a former ambassador tells us what's in a diplomatic pouch; the French consider adopting 'le doggy bag' for restaurant leftovers; we ride along with 23 greyhounds across the US/Mexico border; and composer Idan Raichel performs a song for us using an assortment of improvised musical instruments.

Crayon Box Families

We weren’t looking to adopt another child. We already had four young kids in tow. Our adopted daughter fell into our lives through a series of circumstances too long and complex to describe here. It was God’s doing. We are missionaries to Haiti and when you invest your life in a foreign culture it doesn’t take long for that culture to divest itself into you. Sometimes it adds a kid to your family. When we came back from Haiti with one more kid than we went with, we were a multicolored family. I...

Cannabis legalization may hit a ‘red wall’ at the ballot box

The results of these ballot measures obviously matter to residents of each state, but they also will be telling for the future of the cannabis legalization movement. Andy Ruiz Jr.: The new king in heavyweight boxing

Photo credits: Wikipedia/Faren29/CC BY-SA 4.0 By Romer Cherubim, UK Anthony Joshua lost his four heavyweight boxing titles on 01 June in spectacular fashion against Andy Ruiz Jr. at Madison Square Garden, NYC, USA. Eddie Hearn's master plan to introduce Joshua to the American public and make him look good, failed. Hearn did everything in his power to help Joshua to win his first defence of his heavyweight crown on American soil. By selecting Andy Ruiz Jr. as Joshua's next opponent, with Ruiz Jr. having only six weeks' notice of the fight, Hearn was convinced that Joshua was guaranteed an easy pay day. However, the likeable Ruiz Jr. tore up the script and proved all doubters wrong by producing a skillful display of boxing and sticking to a workable game plan. This was not a one punch wonder.

'Inside the Box' Look at Excited Hadrons Could Help Solve Mystery of Particle X(3872)

So-called "XYZ states" defy the standard picture of particle behavior and have given rise to several attempts to understand their nature. But researchers with the Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics (Theory Center) at the U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility say there is a simpler way to explain the abundance of exotic charmonium particles using lattice quantum chromodynamics.
