cd Beards and Face Masks from the CDC By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Tue, 03 Mar 2020 16:09:29 +0000 Back in 2017, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published this infographic on the Facial Hairstyles and Filtering Facepiece Respirators to help men understand that beards can make facemasks ineffective. With the daily news about the Coronavirus (Covid-19) bordering on panic, this infographic has resurfaced, and is being widely republished.NOTE: The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from COVID-19.From the CDC FAQ:Does the CDC recommend the use of facemask to prevent COVID-19?CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. You should only wear a mask if a healthcare professional recommends it. A facemask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms. This is to protect others from the risk of getting infected. The use of facemasks also is crucial for health workers and other people who are taking care of someone infected with COVID-19 in close settings (at home or in a health care facility). From the original CDC blog post on November 2, 2017:The month of November is full of fun, interesting, and thought-provoking observances. November is National Raisin Bread Month, Historic Bridge Awareness Month, and Inspirational Role Models Month among so much more. November is also the host month to campaigns like No-Shave November and Movember. Campaigns such as these are working hard to raise money for important causes such as cancer research, education, and awareness. These increasingly popular campaigns are a great way to demonstrate your support … unless you need to wear a tight-fitting respirator for your job.Don’t despair! We will not completely ruin your plans to compete for facial hair bragging rights. But we’re going to have to get creative about it…I do love that the CDC is using infographics to spread valuable information in a fun, easy-to-digest way that informs people using visual explanations. cd Revised dynamics of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction model. (arXiv:2005.03325v1 [nlin.CD]) By arxiv.org Published On :: The main aim of this paper is to detect dynamical properties of the Gy"orgyi-Field model of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical reaction. The corresponding three-variable model given as a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations depends on one parameter, the flow rate. As certain values of this parameter can give rise to chaos, the analysis was performed in order to identify different dynamics regimes. Dynamical properties were qualified and quantified using classical and also new techniques. Namely, phase portraits, bifurcation diagrams, the Fourier spectra analysis, the 0-1 test for chaos, and approximate entropy. The correlation between approximate entropy and the 0-1 test for chaos was observed and described in detail. Moreover, the three-stage system of nested subintervals of flow rates, for which in every level the 0-1 test for chaos and approximate entropy was computed, is showing the same pattern. The study leads to an open problem whether the set of flow rate parameters has Cantor like structure. Full Article

cd BookMark: "Charming Billy" By Alice McDermott By radio.wpsu.org Published On :: Thu, 30 Apr 2020 21:45:00 +0000 What makes a book relevant more than twenty years after it was first published? In order to persist, books tell tales that go beyond the experiences of the main character and become relatable to broad audiences across time. “Charming Billy” by Alice McDermott does exactly this while questioning the nature of relevance through an exploration of the titular character. Billy Lynch is an alcoholic. That’s the unchanging reality that leads him to die alone in New York City before the book begins. In the opening chapter, readers meet the community at his funeral, huddled inside a bar and grill ironically drinking the very stuff that fueled Billy’s addiction. It’s through their conversation that we learn of Billy’s goodhearted nature. Billy is willing to help out a friend in any situation and finds ways to make people feel good about life. It’s at that table we meet Billy’s cousin Dennis, who seems to have access to Billy’s life in ways the rest of the family doesn’t. Dennis’ daughter, Full Article

These are some of the CDC's guidelines for reopening schools, childcare centers and day camps safely in places where coronavirus cases are on the decline. The guidance, which also covers restaurants, churches and other public places, was obtained by The Associated Press , which reports that the White House tried to keep it from coming to light. The New York Times quoted Mark Meadows, the chief of staff, as being concerned that the guidelines were "overly prescriptive." The CDC does not have authority to enforce its guidance, which is intended for public information only; the actual policy decisions are up to state and local governments. Schools are closed through the end of the school year throughout much of the country, with the exception of Montana, which welcomed a handful of students back this week. Child care protocols are different in different states. But millions of parents need child care so they can work, and socialization and Full Article
