IDCUP Algorithm to Classifying Arbitrary Shapes and Densities for Center-based Clustering Performance Analysis

Aim/Purpose: The clustering techniques are normally considered to determine the significant and meaningful subclasses purposed in datasets. It is an unsupervised type of Machine Learning (ML) where the objective is to form groups from objects based on their similarity and used to determine the implicit relationships between the different features of the data. Cluster Analysis is considered a significant problem area in data exploration when dealing with arbitrary shape problems in different datasets. Clustering on large data sets has the following challenges: (1) clusters with arbitrary shapes; (2) less knowledge discovery process to decide the possible input features; (3) scalability for large data sizes. Density-based clustering has been known as a dominant method for determining the arbitrary-shape clusters. Background: Existing density-based clustering methods commonly cited in the literature have been examined in terms of their behavior with data sets that contain nested clusters of varying density. The existing methods are not enough or ideal for such data sets, because they typically partition the data into clusters that cannot be nested. Methodology: A density-based approach on traditional center-based clustering is introduced that assigns a weight to each cluster. The weights are then utilized in calculating the distances from data vectors to centroids by multiplying the distance by the centroid weight. Contribution: In this paper, we have examined different density-based clustering methods for data sets with nested clusters of varying density. Two such data sets were used to evaluate some of the commonly cited algorithms found in the literature. Nested clusters were found to be challenging for the existing algorithms. In utmost cases, the targeted algorithms either did not detect the largest clusters or simply divided large clusters into non-overlapping regions. But, it may be possible to detect all clusters by doing multiple runs of the algorithm with different inputs and then combining the results. This work considered three challenges of clustering methods. Findings: As a result, a center with a low weight will attract objects from further away than a centroid with higher weight. This allows dense clusters inside larger clusters to be recognized. The methods are tested experimentally using the K-means, DBSCAN, TURN*, and IDCUP algorithms. The experimental results with different data sets showed that IDCUP is more robust and produces better clusters than DBSCAN, TURN*, and K-means. Finally, we compare K-means, DBSCAN, TURN*, and to deal with arbitrary shapes problems at different datasets. IDCUP shows better scalability compared to TURN*. Future Research: As future recommendations of this research, we are concerned with the exploration of further available challenges of the knowledge discovery process in clustering along with complex data sets with more time. A hybrid approach based on density-based and model-based clustering algorithms needs to compare to achieve maximum performance accuracy and avoid the arbitrary shapes related problems including optimization. It is anticipated that the comparable kind of the future suggested process will attain improved performance with analogous precision in identification of clustering shapes.

China sends three taikonauts on board Shenzhou-19 spacecraft into orbit

Chinese manned spacecraft Shenzhou-19 with three taikonauts on board was successfully launched into low-Earth orbit from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China, UDN Global reports. The spacecraft blasted off on October 29 at 23:27 Moscow time, or October 30 at 04:27 local time. A Long March 2 °F-19 launch vehicle was used for the liftoff. About ten minutes into the flight, the Shenzhou-19 manned spacecraft successfully separated from the rocket and flew into orbit. There are three crew members on board the Shenzhou-19. They will conduct 86 scientific experiments in space, including experiments in the field of medicine, biology, fundamental physics of microgravity, materials science and space technology, the agency notes.

The role of carboxyl­ate ligand orbitals in the breathing dynamics of a metal-organic framework by resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit structural flexibility induced by temperature and guest adsorption, as demonstrated in the structural breathing transition in certain MOFs between narrow-pore and large-pore phases. Soft modes were suggested to entropically drive such pore breathing through enhanced vibrational dynamics at high temperatures. In this work, oxygen K-edge resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy of the MIL-53(Al) MOF was performed to selectively probe the electronic perturbation accompanying pore breathing dynamics at the ligand carboxyl­ate site for metal–ligand interaction. It was observed that the temperature-induced vibrational dynamics involves switching occupancy between antisymmetric and symmetric configurations of the carboxyl­ate oxygen lone pair orbitals, through which electron density around carboxyl­ate oxygen sites is redistributed and metal–ligand interactions are tuned. In turn, water adsorption involves an additional perturbation of π orbitals not observed in the structural change solely induced by temperature.

Development of dual-beamline photoelectron momentum microscopy for valence orbital analysis

The soft X-ray photoelectron momentum microscopy (PMM) experimental station at the UVSOR Synchrotron Facility has been recently upgraded by additionally guiding vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light in a normal-incidence configuration. PMM offers a very powerful tool for comprehensive electronic structure analyses in real and momentum spaces. In this work, a VUV beam with variable polarization in the normal-incidence geometry was obtained at the same sample position as the soft X-ray beam from BL6U by branching the VUV beamline BL7U. The valence electronic structure of the Au(111) surface was measured using horizontal and vertical linearly polarized (s-polarized) light excitations from BL7U in addition to horizontal linearly polarized (p-polarized) light excitations from BL6U. Such highly symmetric photoemission geometry with normal incidence offers direct access to atomic orbital information via photon polarization-dependent transition-matrix-element analysis.

The diamond–silicon carbide composite Skeleton® as a promising material for substrates of intense X-ray beam optics

The paper considers the possibility of using the diamond-silicon carbide composite Skeleton® with a technological coating of polycrystalline silicon as a substrate for X-ray mirrors used with powerful synchrotron radiation sources (third+ and fourth generation). Samples were studied after polishing to provide the following surface parameters: root-mean-square flatness ≃ 50 nm, micro-roughness on the frame 2 µm × 2 µm σ ≃ 0.15 nm. The heat capacity, thermal conductivity and coefficient of linear thermal expansion were investigated. For comparison, a monocrystalline silicon sample was studied under the same conditions using the same methods. The value of the coefficient of linear thermal expansion turned out to be higher than that of monocrystalline silicon and amounted to 4.3 × 10−6 K−1, and the values of thermal conductivity (5.0 W cm−1 K−1) and heat capacity (1.2 J K−1 g−1) also exceeded the values for Si. Thermally induced deformations of both Skeleton® and monocrystalline silicon samples under irradiation with a CO2 laser beam have also been experimentally studied. Taking into account the obtained thermophysical constants, the calculation of thermally induced deformation under irradiation with hard (20 keV) X-rays showed almost three times less deformation of the Skeleton® sample than of the monocrystalline silicon sample.

New achievements in orbital angular momentum beam characterization using a Hartmann wavefront sensor and the Kirkpatrick–Baez active optical system KAOS

Advances in physics have been significantly driven by state-of-the-art technology, and in photonics and X-ray science this calls for the ability to manipulate the characteristics of optical beams. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams hold substantial promise in various domains such as ultra-high-capacity optical communication, rotating body detection, optical tweezers, laser processing, super-resolution imaging etc. Hence, the advancement of OAM beam-generation technology and the enhancement of its technical proficiency and characterization capabilities are of paramount importance. These endeavours will not only facilitate the use of OAM beams in the aforementioned sectors but also extend the scope of applications in diverse fields related to OAM beams. At the FERMI Free-Electron Laser (Trieste, Italy), OAM beams are generated either by tailoring the emission process on the undulator side or, in most cases, by coupling a spiral zone plate (SZP) in tandem with the refocusing Kirkpatrick–Baez active optic system (KAOS). To provide a robust and reproducible workflow to users, a Hartmann wavefront sensor (WFS) is used for both optics tuning and beam characterization. KAOS is capable of delivering both tightly focused and broad spots, with independent control over vertical and horizontal magnification. This study explores a novel non-conventional `near collimation' operational mode aimed at generating beams with OAM that employs the use of a lithographically manufactured SZP to achieve this goal. The article evaluates the mirror's performance through Hartmann wavefront sensing, offers a discussion of data analysis methodologies, and provides a quantitative analysis of these results with ptychographic reconstructions.

Comparing single-shot damage thresholds of boron carbide and silicon at the European XFEL

Xray free-electron lasers (XFELs) enable experiments that would have been impractical or impossible at conventional X-ray laser facilities. Indeed, more XFEL facilities are being built and planned, with their aim to deliver larger pulse energies and higher peak brilliance. While seeking to increase the pulse power, it is quintessential to consider the maximum pulse fluence that a grazing-incidence FEL mirror can withstand. To address this issue, several studies were conducted on grazing-incidence damage by soft X-ray FEL pulses at the European XFEL facility. Boron carbide (B4C) coatings on polished silicon substrate were investigated using 1 keV photon energy, similar to the X-ray mirrors currently installed at the soft X-ray beamlines (SASE3). The purpose of this study is to compare the damage threshold of B4C and Si to determine the advantages, tolerance and limits of using B4C coatings.

Crystal structure and cryomagnetic study of a mononuclear erbium(III) ox­am­ate inclusion com­plex

The synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of an ox­am­ate-con­taining erbium(III) com­plex, namely, tetra­butyl­ammonium aqua­[N-(2,4,6-tri­methyl­phen­yl)oxamato]erbium(III)–di­methyl sulfoxide–water (1/3/1.5), (C16H36N)[Er(C11H12NO3)4(H2O)]·3C2H6OS·1.5H2O or n-Bu4N[Er(Htmpa)4(H2O)]·3DMSO·1.5H2O (1), are reported. The crystal structure of 1 reveals the occurrence of an erbium(III) ion, which is surrounded by four N-phenyl-substituted ox­am­ate ligands and one water mol­ecule in a nine-coordinated environment, together with one tetra­butyl­ammonium cation acting as a counter-ion, and one water and three dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) mol­ecules of crystallization. Variable-temperature static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic mea­sure­ments were carried out for this mononuclear com­plex, revealing that it behaves as a field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) below 5.0 K.

Synthesis of organotin(IV) heterocycles containing a xanthenyl group by a Barbier approach via ultrasound activation: synthesis, crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis

A series of organotin heterocycles of general formula [{Me2C(C6H3CH2)2O}SnR2] [R = methyl (Me, 4), n-butyl (n-Bu, 5), benzyl (Bn, 6) and phenyl (Ph, 7)] was easily synthesized by a Barbier-type reaction assisted by the sonochemical activation of metallic magnesium. The 119Sn{1H} NMR data for all four com­pounds confirm the presence of a central Sn atom in a four-coordinated environment in solution. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies for 17,17-dimethyl-7,7-di­phenyl-15-oxa-7-stanna­tetra­cyclo­[11.3.1.05,16.09,14]hepta­deca-1,3,5(16),9(14),10,12-hexa­­ene, [Sn(C6H5)2(C17H16O)], 7, at 100 and 295 K con­firmed the formation of a mono­nuclear eight-membered heterocycle, with a conformation depicted as boat–chair, resulting in a weak Sn⋯O inter­action. The Sn and O atoms are surrounded by hydro­phobic C—H bonds. A Hirshfeld surface analysis of 7 showed that the eight-membered heterocycles are linked by weak C—H⋯π, π–π and H⋯H noncovalent inter­actions. The pairwise inter­action energies showed that the cohesion between the heterocycles are mainly due to dispersion forces.

Crystal structure of the sodium salt of mesotrione: a triketone herbicide

The crystal structure of the sodium salt of mesotrione, namely, catena-poly[[sodium-μ3-2-[(4-methane­sulfonyl-2-nitro­phen­yl)carbon­yl]-3-oxo­cyclo­hex-1-en-1-olato] ethanol monosolvate], {[Na(C14H12NO7S)]C2H5OH}n, is described. The X-ray structural analysis results reveal that the coordination sphere is established by two chelating O atoms, the O atom of the coordinated ethanol mol­ecule, and an O atom from the methyl­sulfonyl group of a neighboring mol­ecule. Simultaneously, an O atom of the cyclo­hexane fragment serves as a bridge to a neighboring sodium ion, forming a flat Na–O–Na–O quadrangle, thereby forming a mono-periodic polymer. The structure displays O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and C—H⋯O short contacts. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data indicate that the sodium salt of mesotrione decomposes in four stages.

The crystal structure of a mononuclear PrIII complex with cucurbit[6]uril

A new mononuclear complex, penta­aqua­(cucurbit[6]uril-κ2O,O')(nitrato-κ2O,O')praseodymium(III) dinitrate 9.56-hydrate, [Pr(NO3)(CB6)(H2O)5](NO3)2·9.56H2O (1), was obtained as outcome of the hydro­thermal reaction between the macrocyclic ligand cucurbit[6]uril (CB6, C36H36N24O12) with a tenfold excess of Pr(NO3)3·6H2O. Complex 1 crystallizes in the P21/n space group with two crystallographically independent but chemically identical [Pr(CB6)(NO3)(H2O)5]2+ complex cations, four nitrate counter-anions and 19.12 inter­stitial water mol­ecules per asymmetric unit. The nona­coordinated PrIII in 1 are located in the PrO9 coordination environment formed by two carbonyl O atoms from bidentate cucurbit[6]uril units, two oxygen atoms from the bidentate nitrate anion and five water mol­ecules. Considering the differences in Pr—O bond distances and O—Pr—O angles in the coordination spheres, the coordination polyhedrons of the two PrIII atoms can be described as distorted spherical capped square anti­prismatic and muffin polyhedral.
