Defeating the Slavery of “Bad Habits”

Among the greatest struggles in the Christian life are the "little things"—the day-to-day "bad habits" by which we continually fall, and which seem to trap us in our sin. Is there a way out? In this week's episode, Fr. Dcn. Matthew examines the Fathers on sin as habits, how these habits enslave us—and most importantly, how we can overcome our shackles and progress toward the Kingdom.

Identification of badminton players' swinging movements based on improved dense trajectory algorithm

Badminton, as a fast and highly technical sport, requires high accuracy in identifying athletes' swing movements. Accurately identifying different swing movements is of great significance for technical analysis, coach guidance, and game evaluation. To improve the recognition accuracy of badminton players' swing movements, this text is based on an improved dense trajectory algorithm to improve the accuracy of recognising badminton players' swing movements. The features are efficiently extracted and encoded. The results on the KTH, UCF Sports, and Hollywood2 datasets demonstrated that the improved algorithm achieved recognition accuracy of 94.2%, 88.2%, and 58.3%, respectively. Compared to traditional methods, the innovation of research lies in optimised feature extraction methods, efficient algorithm design, and accurate action recognition. These results provide new ideas for the research and application of badminton swing motion recognition.

Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, and Facilitating Conditions as Factors Influencing Smart Phones Use for Mobile Learning by Postgraduate Students of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria

Aim/Purpose: This study examines the influence of Performance Expectancy (PE), Effort Expectancy (EE), and Facilitating Conditions (FC) on the use of smart phones for mobile learning by postgraduate students in University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Background: Due to the low level of mobile learning adoption by students in Nigeria, three base constructs of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model were used as factors to determine smart phone use for mobile learning by the postgraduate students in the University of Ibadan. Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive survey research design of the correlational type, the two-stage random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 217 respondents, and a questionnaire was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics (frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation), test of norm, and inferential statistics (correlation and regression analysis) were used to analyze the data collected. Contribution: The study empirically validated the UTAUT model as a model useful in predicting smart phone use for mobile learning by postgraduate students in developing countries. Findings: The study revealed that a significant number of postgraduate students used their smart phones for mobile learning on a weekly basis. Findings also revealed a moderate level of Performance Expectancy (???? =16.97), Effort Expectancy (???? =12.57) and Facilitating Conditions (???? =15.39) towards the use of smart phones for mobile learning. Results showed a significant positive relationship between all the independent variables and use of smart phones for mobile learning (PE, r=.527*; EE, r=.724*; and FCs, r=.514*). Out of the independent variables, PE was the strongest predictor of smart phone use for mobile learning (β =.189). Recommendations for Practitioners: Librarians in the university library should organize periodic workshops for postgraduate students in order to expose them to the various ways of using their smart phones to access electronic databases. Recommendation for Researchers: There is a need for extensive studies on the factors influencing mobile technologies adoption and use in learning in developing countries. Impact on Society: Nowadays, mobile learning is increasingly being adopted over conventional learning systems due to its numerous benefits. Thus, this study provides an insight into the issues influencing the use of smart phones for mobile learning by postgraduate students from developing countries. Future Research: This study utilized the base constructs of the UTAUT model to determine smart phone use for mobile learning by postgraduate students in a Nigerian university. Subsequent research should focus on other theories to ascertain factors influencing Information Technology adoption and usage by students in developing countries.

The Good, the Bad, and the Neutral: Twitter Users’ Opinion on the ASUU Strike

Aim/Purpose: Nigeria’s university education goes through incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This strike has led to shared emotion on micro-blogging sites like Twitter. This study analyzed selected historical tweets from the “ASUU” to understand citizens’ opinions. Background: The researchers conducted sentiment analysis and topic modelling to understand Twitter users’ opinions on the strike. Methodology: The researchers used the Valence Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) technique for sentiment analysis, and the Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) was used for topic modelling. A total of 10,000 tweets were first extracted for the study. After data cleaning, 1323 tweets were left. Contribution: To the researcher’s best knowledge, no published study has presented a sentiment analysis on the topic of the ASUU strike using the Twitter dataset. This research will fill this gap by providing a sentiment analysis and drawing out subjects by exploring the tweets on the phrase “ASUU.” Findings: The sentiment analysis result using VADER returned 567 tweets as ‘Negative,’ with the remaining 544 and 212 categorized as Positive and Neutral. The result of the LDA returned six topics, all comprising seven keywords. The topics were the solution to the strike, ASUU strike effect, strike Call-off, appeal to ASUU, student protest and student appeal. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers can use this study’s findings to compare with other contexts of opinion mining. Practitioners may also use the research to understand better the attitudes of their staff and students about the strikes to create actionable solutions before the suspension of the strike. Future Research: Future studies can collect information from other social networking and blogging sites.

Jonas Bader - Around the world trip - Interview

Jonas Bader - Around the world trip - Interview

Jonas Bader decided last year to do a trip with his bike around the world and visited countries like Mexiko, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Bali, Tahiti, Portugal, New Caledonia and Spain. Now he is back in Berlin and brought us some fotos and words which we would like to share!

Yo Jonas, you just came back from a huge around the world trip. How did the idea of this trip came up to you?

I was looking forward to do a longer trip like that for quiet a bit, because i didn’t had to much time to travel while i took my studies for my bachelor exams in Stuttgart. For me traveling is an essential part that comes along with bmx. When i was young i already loved all those small trips to the neighboor villages and now im expanding haha.

By the way how long have you been traveling in total and wich countries have you been too?

In total its been a full year. My Goal was to see all 3 Mekkas of BMX. BARCELONA, CALI and Australia. And because i am going that far i made some stops in between: Portugal, Mexico, Tahiti, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Bali and Singapore.

How did you plan our travel destinations?

Like i said i had the master plan of going to BCN, CALI and OZ. I had the rough plan of a few other destinations, but most of them occurred spontaneous. I visited my brother in Portugal for example, who was on a Globetrotter trip with 2 Defhleffs together with Kilian and the two aussies Raph and Jerry. BEST TIME !

What role has played BMX for your journey and what expierences you could get from it?

BMX was a really important while my travels. I recon after a few months of traveling i would have been to bored without. At some point one is just done with all the tourist attractions. I just got sick of the smallest, biggest, narrowest, most blue, highest whats or ever of the world. Thats when i hopped on my BMX and had the best time of my trip and saw the world with a whole other perspective. Unfortunately those were the most honest and interesting experiences of the cities/countries, just cruising my bike and explore the hood.

You have send us also some pics from New Caledonia! How is the BMX szene there?

Sadly i didn’t ride my bike to much over there. I saw a few edits and so on of people from there. But during my stay i didn’t get to know someone. Most of the time i was hanging out with a skater / photographer that i met randomly. But the nature in New Caledonia is so astonishing that i was mostly surfing, snorkeling or diving, was a bit like holiday from my holidays haha.

Which spots, countries or city you could advise us?

I can advice you every single one! I guess its not about wich country you go to, its just about to break habits and go out there and do something different than on a normal day. Get your self in a new adventure and try something new. In the end its up to you if you have a good time, its possible in every country!

What are you doin now in Germany?

I just started to study again and take my master exams in architecture.

Would you like to say something else or do you want to greet someone?

First the standard THANK YOU to my parents and friends and all those who made my trip to what it was in any way! AWESOME. And of course a big thanks to you guys for keeping my bike always fresh as hell. Its not obligatory to get a new bike shipped to Australia! RESPECT.

And one more thing … Wendel hast a small ….. hahahahaha.

Thanks Jonas for your photos and your words Fotos!

Peace out Daniel !

Good News, Bad News

Is it just me, or does it seem like every time things start to look up in your world, it’s almost immediately followed by a big, proverbial waah-waah?

Like literally yesterday, after a phenomenal weekend of celebrating my 40th birthday, my boys started back to school and when my oldest (who is in 6th grade - aka THE WORST) came home, he brought with him a load of homework that should’ve taken an hour or less. But instead, I spent the hours between 4:00pm and 7:00pm working overtime to not say all the worst cuss words out loud in front of my child, because he had decided that everything else on planet earth was more important than his homework - “everything” meaning our dog, the smudges on the wall behind him, where the light in the window was coming from, and whether it’s been long enough since his last pack of fruit snacks to get another one.

Why is it that just when we enter into what feels like a season of good news, lurking just around the corner is some sort of bad news. Sometimes it’s silly, insignificant things like my situation yesterday. But other times it’s not so silly.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas this past year, things in my own personal world experienced an enormous shift that would leave me in a place vocationally that I’ve dreamed of for as long as I can remember dreaming. However, in the other corner of the ring that is my life, my sweet husband is enduring the most trying season of work that he’s ever had to deal with and for the most part, it is succeeding at robbing every ounce of joy and peace in our home that it can.

For some other friends of ours, in the midst of celebrating and gearing up for the birth of their 2nd baby later this spring, they suddenly lost their two year old son. So for them, excitement and expectation has been replaced with devastation and grief. Yet each day they fight. They fight for hope and joy and love and the future.

I think that part of this strange cycle can be chalked up to life just being life. But I also can’t help but wonder if some of it has to do with the unseen, spiritual battle waging around us every single day specifically against those of us who serve the local church and strive to abide in the kingdom.

Paul reminds us:

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  - Ephesians 6:12

But Jesus also said:

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. - John 16.33

So while I would love to tell you that this piece is full of tips on how to avoid the bad news so that you can relish the good, alas it is not. But what I would like to do is encourage you, my brothers and sisters in ministry, to remember and bank on a few things.

  1. You are not alone! Not only do you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you, giving you the power to endure it all, you are surrounded by a host of others who are experiencing the same dichotomy of good and bad, victory and loss, rejoicing and mourning. You have not somehow been singled out to be forgotten by the Father.
  2. Leaning is not weakness! Even Moses had to rely on Aaron and Hur when his arms grew weak. God gives us people to press into so that we don’t have to carry our burdens alone. We at All About Worship would love to be that for those of you out there on the front lines where perhaps there isn’t a ready stock of support.
  3. There is an “other side”! Jesus’ promise to us holds all the weight that we need to endure the days that seem riddled with bad news. When we take each circumstance to Him, His response is “Done! I’ve overcome it!” That doesn’t mean we immediately feel relief and things are resolved. But sometimes, knowing that truth helps us take the next breath, gives us what we need to press forward, and believe that He’s still in control.
  4. Rejoicing and mourning can coexist! When something good is followed by something not-so-good, don’t overlook the victory. The enemy would love to see us move right past celebrating and acknowledging something God provided or did for us into dwelling on the negative. But it’s important that we delight in and make much of the moments when God shows his faithfulness and favor. Sometimes, those moments are what will carry us through the hard ones.

As long as we are on this side of heaven, good news and bad news will always live next door to one another and there really is nothing we can do about that. What we can do though is steady our hearts to be ready for both at any given moment. We do that by arming ourselves with the truths and promises in His Word, by surrounding ourselves with others to fight alongside, by worshiping even when it doesn’t make sense, and by praying first in every situation.

If there is ever a way that All About Worship can come alongside you as you make your way through the up and down seasons of ministry life, never hesitate to reach out on here, email us at info@allaboutworship.com, or find us on social media. We are for you and will do whatever we can to support you in your various places. Feel free to comment below specific ways we can be praying for you in the coming weeks.
