ey ‘In lockdown, spring is unfolding before my eyes’ By www.theguardian.com Published On :: 2020-05-09T06:00:48Z With no alternative but to explore the nature on their doorstep, three writers describe the joy of enforced slow travel It is a place I’d discovered before the virus: a left-hand bend in a narrow stream, a couple of steps off the footpath. There is nothing remarkable there, or not at first glance. There are breeze blocks in the stream bed and plastic bags deeply embedded in the roots of an alder tree. With a few variations, it could be anywhere in Britain: the neglected corner of a city park, the back of a private garden, behind a national park cafe. It’s just one of those spots that no one ever thinks to stop at and, if not for Covid-19, I would not have begun visiting daily, pausing for a few breaths before continuing. I saw the first snowdrops appear there, followed by primroses; then they were swamped by wild garlic and wood anemone. One morning a weasel shot out of a hole under a root and sprinted up the opposite bank. It was the first of several surprises. Continue reading... ey Kevin Spacey breaks silence over sex assault claims to compare industry shunning to coronavirus job losses By uk.movies.yahoo.com Published On :: Wed, 06 May 2020 16:10:13 GMT Actor Kevin Spacey has broken his silence over sex assault allegations, comparing being shunned by the film industry to those who are out of work as a result of the coronavirus crisis. The 60-year-old American Beauty star has not appeared in a professional movie or series since accusations of abuse were made by several men. "I don't think it will come as a surprise for anyone to say that my world completely changed in the fall of 2017,” he said in comments made during an interview for the German business conference Bits & Pretzels podcast. “My job, many of my relationships, my standing in my own industry were all gone in just a matter of hours.” The former House of Cards lead, who was dropped by the show after allegations surfaced, has largely kept a low profile since the allegations were made. He was also removed from the film All the Money in the World, which had to be reshot with actor Christopher Plummer. Spacey has always denied the claims, several of which date back several decades. “While we may have found ourselves in similar situations, albeit for very different reasons and circumstances, I still believe that some of the emotional struggles are very much the same," he said. “And so I do have empathy for what it feels like to suddenly be told that you can't go back to work or that you might lose your job and that it's a situation that you have absolutely no control over.” At the end of the podcast interview, Spacey added: “I was so busy defining myself by what I did or what I was trying to do, that when it all stopped I had no idea what to do next. All I knew how to do was act, I was born to do it. “I don’t want to sugarcoat this devastating time that we’re in, I am hoping that I can encourage you to see an opportunity in all of this and turn this into a positive.” Full Article

ey Songs that make me misty-eyed: Róisín Murphy’s Irish playlist By www.theguardian.com Published On :: 2020-05-07T10:00:00Z The singer-songwriter, formerly of Moloko, picks songs from folk to rock and electronica that will transport you to Ireland “This reminds me of home. I first heard about John McCormack through my grandma,” Murphy says. “It’s about Avoca, which is near Arklow in County Wicklow, where I’m from. I got a bit misty-eyed when I was listening to it this morning. It made me want to be out walking around Avoca and down to the water. Of course the pubs wouldn’t be open, which would be a tragedy.” McCormack, a renowned operatic tenor from Athlone, recorded the song in 1940, with lyrics from a poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore. “My da used to sing this song too. He has a lovely voice and knows hundreds of songs. He used to play a game with us: ‘Name anything and I bet you I know a song about it,’ he’d say.” Continue reading... ey How to dress in lockdown | Jess Cartner-Morley By www.theguardian.com Published On :: 2020-05-08T12:00:26Z The latest trends may not matter any more, but there is a whole new set of influences on what we wearI know, I know – there are more important things to think about than clothes at the moment. I get that. On the other hand, I don’t see that me squinting at graphs or scrolling through headlines is going to make a vaccine come any quicker. So thinking about clothes is no less constructive than pondering logarithmic scales or contact tracing approaches, really.I have pretty much checked out of fashion, in the sense of trends, during the period universally known as This Difficult Time. For those of us fortunate enough not to be at the sharp end of the crisis, lockdown is a little like living in a freeze-frame, and the “spring trends” that were scheduled to be happening in our wardrobes now – Bermuda shorts, crochet dresses, waistcoats – feel like outfits for a party that got cancelled. Fashion in the this-week’s-must-have sense feels like a radio station that’s still broadcasting, but with no one tuning in. Continue reading... Full Article Fashion Life and style
