ap Evaluation of the Importance of Capsule Transparency in Dry Powder Inhalation Devices [Research Briefs] By www.annfammed.org Published On :: 2024-09-23T14:00:14-07:00 The aim of this work is to test whether the use of a transparent capsule affects the residual capsule weight after inhalation as a surrogate of the inhaled delivered dose for patients with non-reversible chronic airway disease. Researchers conducted an observational cross-sectional study with patients using a single-dose dry powder inhaler. The weight of the capsule was measured with a precision microbalance before and after inhalation. Ninety-one patients were included, of whom 63 (69.2%) used a transparent capsule. Inhalation with a transparent capsule achieved a weight decrease of 30.1% vs 8.6% for devices with an opaque capsule (P <0.001). These data reinforce the need to provide patients with mechanisms that verify the correct inhalation technique. Full Article
ap Integration of lung function data: turning snapshots into stories By breathe.ersjournals.com Published On :: 2024-11-12T00:25:08-08:00 Missing or inaccessible lung function measurements, gathered over time, have the potential to stagnate or impair clinical care decisions being made. This jeopardises patient safety and often contributes to excessive resource utilisation. Data integration is fundamental to clinical decision-making and entails amalgamating lung function data from multiple sources in a user-friendly format. Despite this, current systems for recording lung function data are suboptimal, with copious gaps in the clinical picture arising from missing or inaccessible lung function measurements. This article discusses the importance of data integration for lung function, with a call to action for key stakeholders involved in the performance, management and interpretation of such tests. ap News Wrap: Dozens missing after deadly Mogadishu truck bombing By www.pbs.org Published On :: Mon, 16 Oct 2017 22:45:17 +0000 Watch Video | Listen to the AudioJUDY WOODRUFF: And in the day’s other news: More than 300 people are now confirmed dead after Saturday’s massive truck bombing in Somalia, one of the world’s worst attacks in years. Nearly 400 more were wounded. The government blamed the al-Qaida-linked Al-Shabaab group. Rescue crews today searched for survivors at the scene of the bombing, a crowded street in the capital, Mogadishu. With dozens still missing, officials say they expect the death toll to rise. OSMAN LIBAH IBRAHIM, Deputy Minister for Natural Resources, Somalia (through interpreter): More bodies are gradually being found and removed from the rubble. There are other people who are under the rubble. We have heard them as they scream for help. My biggest worry is that even the wounded are succumbing to their injuries. JUDY WOODRUFF: The attack happened two days after Somalia’s defense minister and army chief resigned for undisclosed reasons. There’s been yet another shift to the right in European politics; 31-year-old conservative Sebastian Kurz, Austria’s foreign minister, is set to become that country’s next leader. But he’s short of a majority in Parliament and will likely form a coalition with the far-right Freedom Party. It was founded by ex-Nazis in the 1950s. Kurz has called for the European Union to focus more on internal trade and securing borders. He celebrated in Vienna. SEBASTIAN KURZ, Austrian People’s Party (through interpreter): I have a big request for you. Use today to celebrate. You all have earned it through hard work and dedication. At the same time, I need to tell you that tomorrow the work starts. We didn’t just run to win the elections. We did so to bring Austria back to the top. We ran in this election to achieve real change. JUDY WOODRUFF: A final result in the election is likely to be decided on Thursday. Wildfires that broke out over the weekend in Portugal have killed at least 35 people, including a one-month-old infant. Today, more than 5,300 firefighters with some 1,600 vehicles were battling the fires, some of which officials say were started by arsonists. Wildfires have also left at least four people dead in neighboring Spain. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl pleaded guilty today to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. He was captured by the Taliban in 2009, after leaving his post in Afghanistan. It prompted an intense search and a prisoner swap. Bergdahl appeared before a military judge in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, today. The 31-year-old could be sentenced to life in prison. He said his actions were very inexcusable, adding he didn’t — quote — “think there’d be any reason to pull off a crucial mission to look for one guy.” The truck driver in deadly immigrant smuggling run has pleaded guilty in court. San Antonio police found at least 39 immigrants, 10 of whom died, packed into a sweltering semi-trailer last year and died. The driver, James Matthew Bradley Jr., pleaded to conspiracy and transporting immigrants, resulting in death. He faces now up to life in prison. A New Jersey man has been convicted of planting two pressure-cooker bombs on New York City streets last year. Ahmed Khan Rahimi faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for charges including using a weapon of mass destruction. One of the bombs exploded in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, wounding 30. The second didn’t detonate. Officials said Rahimi was inspired by ISIS and al-Qaida. JOHN MILLER, Deputy Commissioner, NYPD Intelligence & Counterterrorism: Ahmed Khan Rahimi learned a lesson which we keep reminding people of. This is the wrong place to try and carry out an act of terrorism. Witnesses will come forward, evidence will be developed, arrests will be made, prosecutions will be brought forth, and they will be successful. JUDY WOODRUFF: Prosecutors said Rahimi also planted a pipe bomb in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, but no one was injured. Colin Kaepernick has filed a grievance against the national football league. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback says that he remains unsigned due to collusion by team owners over his national anthem protests. Kaepernick sparked a debate when he kneeled during the anthem last year, protesting police mistreatment of African-Americans. On Wall Street today, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 85 points to close at 22957. The Nasdaq rose 18. And the S&P 500 added four. It was a milestone day in the world of astronomy. For the first time, researchers say they have detected gravitational waves with a flash of light from the same cosmic event. The dual observation supports Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity. The ripples in space and the light burst were caused by the collision of two neutron stars. They were first detected in August. The post News Wrap: Dozens missing after deadly Mogadishu truck bombing appeared first on PBS NewsHour. Full Article al-Shabab Austria Mogadishu Sebastian Kurz
ap U.S., Japan agree to maximize diplomatic pressure on North Korea By www.pbs.org Published On :: Tue, 17 Oct 2017 13:01:05 +0000 Monitor in Tokyo shows news of North Korea firing a ballistic missile on July 4. File photo by Toru Hanai/Reuters TOKYO — U.S. and Japanese diplomats agreed Tuesday to maximize pressure on North Korea to resolve tensions over its nuclear program, while citing the need to be prepared for the worst if diplomacy fails. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, after meeting his Japanese counterpart, Shinsuke Sugiyama, told reporters that the focus at the State Department is still on diplomacy to solve the problem and eventually denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. “We must, however, with our allies in Japan and South Korea and elsewhere, be prepared for the worst should diplomacy fail,” he said. The U.S. must be prepared to defend itself and its allies, he said. Sugiyama, briefing reporters separately, reiterated Japan’s support for President Donald Trump’s policy of keeping all options open, but stressed the need for a diplomatic solution by bolstering cooperation among Japan, U.S. and South Korea, as well as via cooperation with China and Russia. The two diplomats will join their South Korean counterpart in Seoul for further talks Wednesday on North Korea. READ MORE: Rex Tillerson says continue diplomacy with North Korea ‘until first bomb drops’ The talks come as the U.S. and South Korea hold joint naval drills this week. They regularly conduct joint exercises, though North Korea condemns them as an invasion rehearsal. North Korea’s deputy U.N. ambassador warned on Monday that the situation on the peninsula “has reached the touch-and-go point and a nuclear war may break out any moment.” Kim In Ryong told the U.N. General Assembly’s disarmament committee that North Korea has been subjected to a direct nuclear threat from the United States and has the right to possess nuclear weapons in self-defense. He pointed to military exercises and what he called a U.S. plan to stage a “secret operation aimed at the removal of our supreme leadership.” Kim’s speech follows increasingly tough U.N. sanctions. Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country is curtailing economic, scientific and other ties with North Korea in line with U.N. sanctions, and the European Union announced new sanctions as well. ap U.S.-backed Syrian forces recapture Raqqa from Islamic State group By www.pbs.org Published On :: Tue, 17 Oct 2017 16:57:20 +0000 Fighters of Syrian Democratic Forces celebrate after Raqqa in Syria was liberated from Islamic State militants on Oct. 17. Photo by Erik De Castro/Reuters U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces announced Tuesday that they had captured the city of Raqqa from Islamic State militants. “Everything is finished in Raqqa, our forces have taken full control of Raqqa,” SDF spokesman Talal Sello told AFP. A formal declaration would be announced after operations to clear any remaining sleeper cells and to remove landmines in the city were completed, Sello added. The move is a major setback for the Islamic State which considered Raqqa the de-facto capital of its self-declared caliphate. It comes on the third anniversary of the global effort to defeat ISIS. Raqqa was the first provincial capital to fall from government control in March 2013 after it was captured by a rebel army. The army included both Syrian opposition groups and more hard line parties including al-Nusra and the Islamic State. A civilian government that was established in the city divided two months later, and less than a year later ISIS recaptured Raqqa and named the the capital of their caliphate. About 900 civilians have been killed since the the start of the five-month operation, including 570 people in coalition air raids, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the civilian death toll at 1,130 people. American journalist James Foley was beheaded in the mountains south of the city. SDF fighters pulled down the Islamic State’s black flag from the city’s National Hospital near the city’s stadium, according to a Reuters report. Special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS Brett McGurk said in August that the U.S. would attempt to perform a “stabilization” in Raqqa — including demining, removing rubble from major pathways to allow trucks and equipment through, and “basic electricity, sewage, water, the basic essentials to allow populations to come back to their home.” It is not clear when the 300,000 civilians who have fled Raqqa since April during the operation will be able to return. ap Metaphor Re:Fantazio (PS5) By www.vgchartz.com Published On :: Mon, 11 Nov 2024 14:15:24 GMT When I was reviewing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a few months ago, it looked set to be my Game of the Year. Metaphor: ReFantazio was still a distant concept and, I thought, communication of that concept was anything great. It turns out that I was really underestimating Atlus at the time. It's been eight years since Persona 5, and maybe I had begun to forget its magic, because as a JRPG from the creators of Persona 5, the magic is undoubtedly there in Metaphor: ReFantazio. When I was younger, I used to watch the Columbo series, where you know the culprit's identity right away at the start. Metaphor: ReFantazio is a bit like that, because the introduction shows the King of Euchronia (Metaphor's fantasy world) being murdered in his sleep by an ambitious aristocrat named Louis, which throws the whole country into turmoil. From there, the protagonist and the comrades he meets all have different reasons for sharing the same goal: to prevent the wicked Louis from seizing the throne. As simple as it seems, the narrative has its fair share of surprises. This has to do with the tremendous wealth of characters in the game. Due to a certain magic, the race for the throne is turned into an election, in which the protagonists gets to runs. Adding to the eight playable characters, you meet several competitors and followers who back you. All of them have personal stories and strange personalities that make Metaphor's adventure strikingly vivid. The sub-stories are quite interesting for most part, for they convey a range of different emotions: sometime are heart-breaking, sometime heart-warming or just purely fun, and they'll keep you engaged for hours. They often leave you in suspense, since the structure of the game has you experiencing them little by little. And, just like in Persona, you can spend extensive time with your allies in a whole lot of mini sequences that play a great part in making the cast truly unforgettable. But that doesn't mean you'll forget about the main story. Metaphor: ReFantazio offers some fascinating chapters. Take for instance the Opera house one, it's a breathtaking chapter very reminiscent of the great Final Fantasy VI, absolutely loaded with memorable sequences, grandiose fights, and striking reveals. And in the end, the whole game is like that. The thirst for more is real, as Atlus always drops a little something to make you eager to progress and feel engaged - a new character, intense combat, a shocking truth, stunning landscapes, etc. Even the most common NPCs sometimes tell a tale that blows your mind. Metaphor: ReFantazio has so much to offer in terms of characters, creativity, and storytelling that I couldn't help feeling overwhelmed at times. The incongruity of an election in a kingdom ruled by Royals for ages is in reality an occasion for the story to develop elaborate thoughts about democracy and society. The protagonist always carries with him a strange book about an ideal world, where people have equal chances, decide their own fates, and live in harmony. It's a dream-like realm wholly different from Euchronia, which is a medieval regime plagued by injustice, greed, and poverty. But there are whispers of a past, of a very advanced civilisation that ultimately failed, creating a scenario that raises the question of the relationship between democracy and freedom. There are also different tribes in the game, and it's worth noticing that the protagonist's party has one representative of each tribe, like a call for tolerance in a kingdom known for its inequality. The narrative therefore has powerful philosophic elements - something that only the greatest works in JRPG history possess. Metaphor: ReFantazio boasts world design like you seldom see, starting with the giant flying rock that has symbolized it since reveal. Here again Atlus' creativity is absolutely inspired. The designers left their comfort zone and came up with an innovative take on characters, meaning that they ditched the classical human hero or heroine. You befriend an elf-like girl, a bat-like character or a maiden with a third eye, but no real typical human. The result is a party that literally breathes fantasy, a bit like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance did in its time. Humans exist, though, but on the opposite side of the divide. These so-called Humans are twisted and awfully misshapen creatures roaming Euchronia as dangerous enemies. Atlus went beyond the boundaries of the bizarre with these designs and the result is amazing. I could also mention the funny Runner, a land vessel with legs that the party owns. Just travelling with it feels incredible. There are numerous examples like this, but in short the world is packed with wonders that I've never seen in a game before. As for combat, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a good old turn-based JRPG, where strategy and careful planning matter. Characters wield the power of Archetypes, abstract figures that party members turn into when attacking. Archetypes are essentially jobs, hence my mention of Final Fantasy Tactics above. You can equip a character with an archetype, and they then acquire attack and passive skills specific to that archetype. For example, the Gunner can deal what is called "pierce" damage from behind, the Warrior heavy "slash" damage with its greatsword, and the Mage masters the natural elements. There are also very complex Archetypes like the Masked Dancer, which can wear different masks to mimic other Archetypes, or the all-powerful Summoner, who masters absolutely ever type of damage once you acquire the corresponding stones (needless to say, these are incredibly difficult to come by). Unlike Persona 5, every character can equip any archetype, so you can choose the allies you like the most. Besides that, the currently-equipped Archetype can also inherit a couple of skills or spells from another, allowing for very elaborate lineups. Combat isn't simplistic or easy; basic skills won't do much against bosses or even the relatively big enemies within dungeons. For these, the player must analyze how Archetypes can cooperate. Two Healers can, for example, cast a light spell on all opponents, while a single healer only targets one. Three magic-type archetypes lets the Mage unleash the mightiest fire spell available, which comes in handy at times. Such cooperation skills take more than one turn crystal (as turns are represented in game), but you can save turn crystals by exploiting the enemy's weakness, like you can in Shin Megami Tensei and its spin-offs. The possibilities offered by Archetypes are fantastic and their complexity goes well beyond anything I've experienced from Atlus thus far. You have several types of Archetypes that work against a set weakness (three Archetype lineages have fire spells, for example). So you can choose the ones that fit your current goal or preferences. Boss fights are no joke and it's a renewed pleasure to overcome the various (tough) challenges after devising the right strategy. Metaphor: ReFantazio also lives up to Persona 5 in two particular aspects: main dungeons are never short of surprises, and the presentation of the battle menu is once again fantastic. Like in Persona, Metaphor: ReFantazio is played in limited time. There's an in-game calendar with deadlines set to clear the main dungeons. So you can't have everyone master every archetype - you need to choose and use every day wisely. Unlike Persona 5, which gives you fixed Personas that you have to figure out how to use optimally, building characters and Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio must be planned well ahead of time. This a fundamental difference between the two and the reason why this new IP elevates Atlus' core gameplay conceits, which were already very good. Exploration is important and quite entertaining too: you can tackle tricky secondary dungeons, discover special shops, or visit your followers. The latter provide perks, like increased slots for inherited skills, greater experience gain and, most importantly, the ability to unlock advanced Archetypes. The Healer can become the Cleric, for instance, with far superior healing capabilities, and you can become a General after being a Commander, gaining powerful ice skills in addition to the potent fire skills the latter had. The whole game must be seen as a wide array of possibilities, with the player finding their own way to victory with their choices and favorite characters. As far as I'm concerned, this feels rewarding beyond anything I expected. Overflowing with content, the game is very long (around 70 hours), even with Atlus allowing you save time (any low-level enemy on the map can be beaten instantly without entering a turn-based battle, and you'll still gain experience and materials). The visuals are Metaphor's clear weakness. The game modeling isn't what you'd expect from a PS5 game in 2024, and I'd say it's fairly underwhelming for PS4 too. The backgrounds aren't very sharp and you see aliasing here and there. Secondary dungeons look very common; actually, they don't look like much of anything really. And there are several towers to explore across Euchronia, but the interior of each tower looks the exact same everytime. This kind of reuse of assets is fairly disappointing for a game of this magnitude. I shiver at the thought of what Metaphor: ReFantazio could have looked like with a Final Fantasy-sized budget. I expect it would have been my first perfect score, but it looks like I'll need to withhold that one once again. One aspect that does score perfect marks is the original music score. Here again, I was pretty sure that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth would be my soundtrack of the year, but Metaphor's music blows it away completely. Atlus' sound team has crafted vibrant choruses befitting the heroic fantasy genre, but with such unorthodox compositions that it felt fresh to my ears. Other vocals and melodies are bewitching to the point they lift your spirit in battle or dungeons. And there's the strange theme of Virga island, with its weird vocals and hypnotic murmurs. It sounds like a tribal chant from afar, a bit like what Genshin Impact achieved with the Natlan soundtrack two months ago. The music is a splendid journey in itself. Metaphor: ReFantazio is the type of game you feel was made to achieve something greater than just sales. It's a completely new world, boasting an immense wealth of gameplay, characters, locations, and music, redefining heroic fantasy like no JRPG has done for decades. Atlus' latest title is also a fantastic challenge for turn-based combat and strategy lovers, with highly enjoyable and rewarding dungeons. Put another way, Metaphor: ReFantazio is the golden age of fantasy JRPGs, revived from the ashes in all its majesty, no less. During the day, Thomas is a normal account manager. ap The Sunday Papers By www.rockpapershotgun.com Published On :: Sun, 03 Nov 2024 11:00:00 +0000 It's official: I am once again the Sunday correspondent around here. That means it falls to me to round up (mostly) good (mostly) writing about (mostly) video games. I will otherwise be spending my Sunday continuing the fight against my dog's fleas, which rebound every three weeks no matter how much I spray, scrub or throw things away. On, the independent video game magazine which I linked to last week, has run a series of brief interviews with each of the contributors to its launch issue. I recommend Christian Donlan's for the puzzle game recommendations and Margaret Robertson's which expands on her fascination with Japanese paper games. ap Warcraft 2: Tides Of Darkness Remastered apparently leaks ahead of the RTS series’ 30th anniversary direct next week By www.rockpapershotgun.com Published On :: Wed, 06 Nov 2024 09:47:14 +0000 We’re still a week away from Blizzard’s Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct next Wednesday the 13th of November, but art from an apparent remaster of 1995 real time strategy game Warcraft II: Tides Of Darkness has leaked online, via Xibbly user Stiven. It’s a thin one, as far as leaks go, but does show what looks to be cover, logo art, and a Battle.net icon. Thanks for the spot, Percy Coswald Gamer. ap Apex Legends is revisiting the past, but it should be prouder of its present By www.rockpapershotgun.com Published On :: Fri, 08 Nov 2024 09:49:08 +0000 Nostalgia, when you think about it, is bollocks. There has never been a better time than right this second – averaged out, and despite repeated attempts to the contrary, humanity has never been healthier, freer, or more enlightened by knowledge. It’s true of games too. For every by-committee platter of passionless map markers, there are thousands of more personal, more creative, more interesting works, all adding to the decades' worth of great stuff we can still play today. What isn’t bollocks is the emotional pull that nostalgia, for all its lack of cold, hard reason, still manages to wield inside our warm, squishy brains. Hence, the centrepiece of Apex Legends’ Season 23 update is a mode that recreates the battle royale FPS as it was back in 2019, defaulting back to the original map and weapon arsenal while cutting the 26-strong legend roster to the earliest ten. It’s a Fortnite-style rolling back of the clock, and a passably enjoyable one, but also a reminder that the good old days weren’t always that good. Still, it's an ever-evolving thing and Activision have announced the game's first seasonal drop. It's a hefty one with a lot of additions, so I'll try my best to break down the good stuff. TLDR: there's some new maps for multiplayer and zombies, new modes, and a few extra bits. I'm mildly excited for more. More in this case is good. ap The Sunday Papers By www.rockpapershotgun.com Published On :: Sun, 10 Nov 2024 11:00:00 +0000 November 8th, 2005 was my first day as a full-time games journalist, which means I have now entered my 20th year of doing this. "This" has changed a lot over time: from producing CD and DVD coverdiscs, to writing for a magazine, to editing magazines and a website, to solely editing a website, to managing several websites. Sprinkle podcasts, videos, events and a lot of other things in there and "games journalist" doesn't really cover it. One of the only constants is that I read a lot of writing about video games. Dapper gent Oli Welsh wrote for Polygon about the fan reboot of City Of Heroes. We briefly covered fans getting an official license earlier this year, but Oli went and spoke to the folks making it all work. Read more Full Article The Sunday Papers Blockbuster
ap The new Nvidia App is out now, justly banishing GeForce Experience to history By www.rockpapershotgun.com Published On :: Tue, 12 Nov 2024 13:56:26 +0000 After nearly a year of public beta honing, the Nvidia App – Team Green’s new one-stop shop for desktop GPU management – is out in full. Not alongside the upcoming RTX 50 series, as rumoured, but right-now-today-this-minute. I’ve been testing out the launch version and while it’s not without some dud features, it does agreeably achieve its stated goal of combining the functions within Nvidia Control Panel and GeForce Experience. And if installing it means never having to use the latter again, well, that’s 149MB well spent. Read more Full Article Graphics Cards Nvidia Nvidia G-Sync Hardware Nvidia DLDSR Overclocking
ap Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 patch adds a new weapon, plus some tweaks for the existing arsenal By www.rockpapershotgun.com Published On :: Tue, 12 Nov 2024 15:08:03 +0000 "Where’s my Neo-Volkite pistol, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2?" was my perhaps slightly ungrateful reaction upon booting the action game up after the previous patch. "I didn’t even know what a Neo-Volkite pistol was until five minutes ago, but now this whole game is trash until I get one!." As promised in the roadmap, the last big update added a whole new Operations map, complete with a gargantuan new pseudo-boss in the form of a hierophant bio-titan. It did not, however, give me my beloved pistol. It’s fine. It’s in now, along with a few, less Neo-Volkite updates to other weapons. ap Man accused of killing Muslim teen indicted on capital murder charges By www.pbs.org Published On :: Tue, 17 Oct 2017 00:03:24 +0000 An attendee leaves flowers for Nabra Hassanen, a teenage Muslim girl killed by a bat-wielding motorist near a Virginia mosque, during a vigil in New York City. Photo by Brendan McDermid/Reuters A grand jury has formally charged a 22-year-old man with capital murder and rape in the death of Nabra Hassanen, who was killed on her walk back to a Virginia mosque. The Fairfax County Circuit Court indicted Darwin Martinez-Torres of Sterling, Virginia, on Monday on four counts of capital murder for killing Nabra, who was with friends while they had a meal before Ramadan services. Dozens of people had gathered outside the courthouse today, chanting “Justice for Nabra.” Virginia law has specific conditions for pursuing the death penalty, but the Associated Press reported that the grand jury’s indictment described in graphic detail how Nabra’s killing was grounds for a death penalty against Martinez-Torres. The indictment appears to acknowledge for the first time that the 17-year-old Muslim teen was raped. Under state law, the combination of a rape charge with a premeditated murder charge means the death penalty can be pursued. Police have said that Martinez-Torres, who is an undocumented immigrant, got into a confrontation on June 18 with a group of teens walking back to the All Dulles Area Muslim Society after grabbing a late meal. He is accused of returning later and beating Nabra with a baseball bat. Police said Nabra’s body was later discovered in a pond. A search warrant affidavit revealed that Martinez-Torres admitted to killing Nabra and had led authorities to where he dumped her body, AP reported. Nabra’s parents and Muslim advocates have said that Nabra’s death was motivated by hate, but police has said that they will not treat the killing as a hate crime. Instead, police have said it was a road rage incident. “The reason this guy he hit my daughter is because she’s Muslim,” Nabra’s father Mahmoud Hassanen told WAMU. “Why [didn’t he] hit the boy who bothered him?” Nabra’s father added that he hoped for the death penalty, while her mother said she wanted Martinez-Torres to serve life in prison. “I just want people to remember her, and don’t forget her,” Mahmoud told WAMU. “I think nobody can forget her too, for what she did in her life.” A preliminary hearing for Martinez-Torres reportedly turned emotional on Friday, with Nabra’s parents both shouting at the suspect in court. Nabra’s mother Sawsan Gazzar apparently threw a shoe at Martinez-Torres during the proceedings. ap News Wrap: Trump’s latest travel ban blocked by federal judge By www.pbs.org Published On :: Tue, 17 Oct 2017 22:45:01 +0000 Watch Video | Listen to the AudioJUDY WOODRUFF: And in the day’s other news: A federal judge in Hawaii struck down the Trump administration’s latest travel ban. That temporarily blocks enforcement of the order nationwide, but the Justice Department says it will appeal. The ban extended to six mostly Muslim nations, plus North Korea and Venezuela. Pennsylvania Congressman Tom Marino withdrew today from consideration to be President Trump’s drug czar. That followed an investigation by The Washington Post and CBS News. They found Marino was key in passing a 2016 law that limits the Drug Enforcement Administration’s ability to rein in opioid distribution. A new verbal battle has broken out between the president and Republican Senator John McCain. It began last night in Philadelphia, when the Arizona senator and former Vietnam POW appeared to criticize Mr. Trump and his followers. He cited a list of failings. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, R-Ariz.: To fear the world we have organized and led for three-quarters-of-a-century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems. (CHEERING AND APPLAUSE) JUDY WOODRUFF: The president answered by saying, “At some point, I fight back, and it won’t be pretty.” In turn, McCain said, “I have faced tougher adversaries.” In Afghanistan, Taliban bombings and shootings left at least 74 people dead today. The worst was Paktika province in the east, where two car bombs killed dozens, including the provincial police chief, and wounded more than 100 others. Taliban militants also staged attacks in the south and west of the country. In Syria, militia forces backed by the U.S. say they have retaken the Islamic State group’s de facto capital. The city of Raqqa had been under ISIS control since 2014. The battle to recapture it began in June. Today, Kurdish-led fighters celebrated as they moved into the city center. The U.S. military said 90 percent of Raqqa has been taken, with pockets of militants remaining. There’s word that U.S. airstrikes in Yemen killed dozens of Islamic State fighters on Monday. The strikes were apparently carried out by drones. The Pentagon says the targets were training camps for recruits. In Northern Iraq, Kurdish forces withdrew from more territory today, as Iraqi government troops advanced. It came on the heels of the Kurds’ vote for independence. Federal forces and allied militia had already forced the Kurds to leave the area in and around Kirkuk and its oil fields. Iraq’s prime minister said that paves the way for talks. HAIDER AL-ABADI, Prime Minister, Iraq (through interpreter): I call for dialogue on the basis of partnership in one country and under the Constitution. The referendum is finished and has become a thing from the past. We hoped that they would cancel it, but we have finished it on the ground. JUDY WOODRUFF: Meanwhile, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan, Massoud Barzani, insisted that the referendum will not be in vain. Another 10,000 to 15,000 Rohingya Muslims fled Buddhist Myanmar for Bangladesh over the weekend. Drone video showed snaking lines of refugees making the trek to already crowded camps. Many told of villages torched by mobs and soldiers. Others said they were starved out of their homes. Back in this country, a new fire broke out in the San Francisco Bay Area, just as crews had made major progress against other fires in Northern California. Thick smoke billowed from the new site early today, as it burned through forests in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Weary fire crews said they’re calling in more help. ROB SHERMAN, Division Chief, Cal Fire: So, the idea is to hit it pretty hard with aircraft and then go ahead and hit it with the ground resources at the same time. We have had north winds, a lot of drying, and everything’s really, really dry. So it’s challenging. JUDY WOODRUFF: In Southern California, yet another fire spread on Mount Wilson, about 25 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. It threatened a historic observatory and communications towers. President Trump’s overall wealth has taken a hit, as his New York real estate loses some of its luster. Forbes ranks him 248 this year on its list of the 400 wealthiest Americans. That’s down nearly 100 points from last year. His estimated worth is $3.1 billion. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates again tops the list. He’s worth nearly $90 billion. And on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average traded above 23,000 for the first time. In the end, it gained 40 points to close at 22997. The Nasdaq fell a fraction, and the S&P 500 added one point. The post News Wrap: Trump’s latest travel ban blocked by federal judge appeared first on PBS NewsHour. ap Karen Pence to outline goals for art therapy initiative By www.pbs.org Published On :: Wed, 18 Oct 2017 12:33:59 +0000 File photo of Karen Pence (right) by Jonathan Ernst/Reuters WASHINGTON — When Karen Pence found out that an art therapist in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico couldn’t afford the clay her clients needed, she sprang into action. A trained watercolor artist and advocate of the little-known mental health profession, Vice President Mike Pence’s wife went to the Virginia art supply store she frequented when they lived in the state during his tenure in Congress, bought 120 pounds of self-drying clay and packed it aboard Air Force Two for their flight down to survey the damage. “She cleaned him out,” the vice president said of the store’s owner. Mrs. Pence made art therapy her cause ever since she first learned about it more than a decade ago. She has visited numerous art therapy programs, both in the U.S. and abroad, and on Wednesday in Florida, nine months into the administration, she planned to formally announce the goals for her art therapy initiative. She wants to help people understand the difference between art therapy and arts and crafts, and to grasp that art therapy is a viable option for treating trauma, injury and other life experiences. She also wants to encourage young people to choose art therapy as a career. “I don’t think that a lot of people understand the difference between therapeutic art and art therapy,” Mrs. Pence, a trained watercolor artist, told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview before the announcement at Florida State University in Tallahassee. The school has an art therapy program she described as “tremendous.” Blabbing to a girlfriend can be therapeutic, she explained, but it is not the same as art therapy, which has three elements: a client, a trained therapist and art. READ MORE: VP Pence’s wife aims to raise awareness about art therapy As passionate as she is about raising art therapy’s profile, other issues help make Karen Pence tick, too. One of them is helping military families, especially spouses. Her only son, Michael, is in the Marines. There’s also her interest in honeybees. Mrs. Pence installed a beehive on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory, where the vice president’s official residence is located, to help call attention to a decline in managed bee colonies that officials say could negatively affect U.S. agricultural production. She had a beehive at the Indiana governor’s residence for the same reason. Now 60 and married to the vice president since 1985, Mrs. Pence has long been viewed as one of her husband’s most trusted political advisers. They are often together on trips, at the White House, or at the observatory, almost always holding hands. Since returning to Washington in January (the family lived in the area when her husband served in Congress), she has accompanied the vice president on goodwill tours of Europe, Asia and Latin America, as well as trips to survey recent hurricane damage in Texas, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. She tries to visit art therapy programs wherever she goes. Journalists who travel with Pence often keep an eye out for his wife; she often brings them cookies when he ventures back to the press cabin for small talk. READ MORE: Devastated Puerto Rico needs unprecedented aid, says governor She’s even done a little campaigning, urging Virginians to vote next month for Ed Gillespie in what’s viewed as a tight gubernatorial race. “It really makes a difference, I can tell you. Nobody thought that we were going to win,” she said, an apparent reference to the Trump-Pence ticket. The vice president often refers to his wife as the family’s “prayer captain.” She has led congregations in prayer during their hurricane-damage trips. “We’re people of faith so we just try and approach everything with prayer,” Mrs. Pence said from her sunny, second-floor office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in the White House complex, where she and her staff enjoy coveted views of the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial. Art therapy drawings given as gifts adorn the outer office. She proudly displayed several of her paintings, including of the Capitol dome, the vice president’s residence, a Ball canning jar-turned-flower vase, a cardinal bird and a pink peony. She turns many of her watercolors into prints and boxed notecards that she gifts to art therapists she meets. Except for myriad pets, including two cats, a dog and a rabbit named Marlon Bundo, the Pences are empty nesters. Their son and two adult daughters are off on their own. “I think for us this is a good time in our life for this role because our kids are out of college. They’re living their own lives,” Mrs. Pence said. She’s also launching a blog in conjunction with Wednesday’s announcement to chronicle her visits to art therapy programs. ap Escaping Harvey Weinstein was a ‘cat-and-mouse game,’ says Katherine Kendall By www.pbs.org Published On :: Wed, 18 Oct 2017 22:15:13 +0000 Watch Video | Listen to the AudioHARI SREENIVASAN: Let’s turn to the continuing fallout and reaction to the Harvey Weinstein story. Yesterday, Weinstein resigned from the board of his production company following numerous revelations of sexual harassment and several allegations of assault. More than three dozen women have said Weinstein harassed them. While Weinstein has admitted to behaving inappropriately, he has said he didn’t physically assault anyone. One of those women is Katherine Kendall. She was a 23-year-old actress who met Weinstein in 1993. She alleges that he invited her to his apartment in New York, where, she says, he took off his clothes and asked for a massage. As other actresses began coming forward about their painful experiences, she also went public with her own story. She joins me now from Los Angeles. First, thanks for joining us. And I don’t want to relive something that’s painful for you, but you are taking a public stance on it. For people who don’t know your story, what happened? KATHERINE KENDALL, Actress/ Photographer: Well, I was you know, a young actress, and I had had a formal meeting at the Miramax office earlier that day. And then, at the end of the meeting, which I thought went really well, he invited me to come to screenings. He said: “Welcome to the Miramax family. You know, come to premieres, screenings, et cetera. In fact, there’s one this afternoon. Would you like to come?” And I said, “Sure.” And I ended up going to see a movie with him. It ended up just being a movie, not a screening, but the film “Red Rock West.” And, you know, that’s right when I had this sort of sinking feeling that something wasn’t going right. And then, after the movie, we walked for a few blocks. And he said he needed to go up to his apartment to get something, and would I just come with him real quick? And I sort of said no, and we went back and forth on that for a minute. It was sort of a negotiation with him always, trying to sort of stand my ground, but then be convinced it was OK. I did go into his apartment. Once there, we talked for a long time about art and movies. And I felt like he was treating me like an intellect. And I felt like the meeting was going really well, and sort of continued. I didn’t feel unsafe once I was in there. And, at one point, then, he got up to go to the bathroom. And he came back in a robe and asked me to give him a massage. And I was extremely uncomfortable. And I was like, oh, God, no, I’m not comfortable with that. And we went back and forth on that. And then he went back to the bathroom again, and came back this time completely naked. And, you know, that changed it entirely for me, too. It just took it to the next place. It was completely disorienting. And I was scared, you know? I was really scared. And then it became sort of a cat-and-mouse game of, like, how am I going to get out of there? And I’m — it’s hard to make sense of what someone is trying to do to you when they’re fully naked, and they’re… HARI SREENIVASAN: Yes. KATHERINE KENDALL: You know, I’m 105 pounds. He’s a large man standing between me and the door. And, I mean, I felt very resolute, like, I will definitely get out of here somehow. But I’m not — I’m not sure — I’m not sure what’s going to happen here. You know, a lot was going through my head. And he said, well, if you won’t give me a massage, will you at least show me your breasts? And it was just — you know, it was, all in all, an extremely humiliating experience for me. And even though I got away, I felt like something had still — like something horrible had just happened to me. HARI SREENIVASAN: You know, in the immediate aftermath, did you tell someone about it? Because you have said before that you felt ashamed… KATHERINE KENDALL: I did. HARI SREENIVASAN: … even though you were the victim. KATHERINE KENDALL: I did. It’s really interesting how that happens. And I think — you know, I’m older now, and I have done some work on myself. And I have learned that a lot of people feel that way. It’s — it’s not — it wasn’t just me. But the just me feeling that this is my fault, this must have only happened to me, there’s something wrong with me, is so common when someone perpetrates against you. HARI SREENIVASAN: What were the… KATHERINE KENDALL: And I did. I told my mom. And I told some good friends. But, you know, one of the things that happened was, I didn’t want them to tell anybody. You know, people wanted to help me, but they didn’t know how, and I didn’t want them to try too hard, because I didn’t want it to backlash. I was scared. And I think that it’s important to remember that we don’t really come from a culture that supports women in talking about sexual harassment, in my — in my experience, that is. And, you know, I just haven’t felt like it was something I was going to get support on… HARI SREENIVASAN: You know, how long… KATHERINE KENDALL: … in the bigger picture. HARI SREENIVASAN: Yes. How long did this feeling last? Or, I guess, what are the longer-term ripple effects here? Did it shake your confidence in your abilities? KATHERINE KENDALL: I think it did. I think it did. I think it did. I think it made me feel like, wow, you know, that was a wash. He wasn’t interested at all in what I had to say, or, you know, he didn’t see any talent there or intellect there. He was assessing the situation the whole time for something else. And I think that — that did hurt. You know, I wish it didn’t. HARI SREENIVASAN: Yes. KATHERINE KENDALL: But he had produced so many movies that I thought were wonderful. And it was — it’s hard when someone has made art that you love, and how do you stay attached to liking their art, but feeling conflicted about them? And, yes, I think it does have long-term effects. I think you tuck it away. And then, for me, also, I realized that it came back when I would see his name or see him in person. I would start to sort of tremble all over again. I mean, I wouldn’t think about him on a daily basis or anything for years, and then I would see him, and I would think, oh, I don’t feel well. I got to get out of here. HARI SREENIVASAN: Right. KATHERINE KENDALL: You know, it would bring up so much emotion. And the most recent one was the woman in New York, the Italian model. I felt so, so enraged when I saw what happened there, and that they sort of — the police had him, and that then he got away. And then she was being dragged through the press as somebody who just, you know, wanted a payout, et cetera. HARI SREENIVASAN: You know, in the wake of that, there was — a friend of yours had tweeted, “At some point, all the women who have been afraid to speak out about Harvey Weinstein are going to have to hold hands and jump.” This was back in 2015. And from your Twitter account, you said, “Agreed.” It seemed like you almost had the opportunity to come forward. What made you want to come forward now? Has this become a turning point in the industry? KATHERINE KENDALL: This is a turning point. It’s a turning point. There are so many times when I thought about it, and then felt like — there were times when I thought about it and said, well, I have nothing to lose, I will just do it. And then I thought, I — I just didn’t have the strength or the courage yet. And I think somebody like Jodi Kantor doing the story for The New York Times, the fact that she thought it was a story at all was startling to me and made me feel like, wow, something is going to be done. And I knew she had told me — I mean, they were looking for women that this had happened to, because they’d been hearing rumors for so long that it happened to so many people. And she had told me other people were coming out. And I thought, I can’t — when I watched Rose McGowan or any of the other actresses come forward, I just — or Ashley Judd — I just thought, they look strong to me, and I don’t want to be the one that stays silent. HARI SREENIVASAN: Well, Katherine Kendall… KATHERINE KENDALL: I want to stand beside them. HARI SREENIVASAN: Katherine Kendall, thank you very much for speaking with us. And, hopefully, there are other people that are empowered by you coming forward. KATHERINE KENDALL: I hope so. Thank you. At a hearing today, he bridled at Democratic Senator Al Franken’s accusation that he’d — quote — “moved the goalposts” on the nature of his discussions. SEN. AL FRANKEN, D-Minn.: First it was, I didn’t have communications with Russians, which wasn’t true. Then it was, I never met with any Russians to discuss any political campaign, which may or may not be true. Now it’s, I didn’t discuss interference in the campaign. JEFF SESSIONS, Attorney General: Well, let me just say without hesitation, that I conducted no improper discussions with the Russians at any time regarding the campaign or any other item facing this country. HARI SREENIVASAN: Sessions has recused himself from the Justice Department’s investigation into Russia’s election meddling. President Trump had new criticism today for former FBI Director James Comey over the Hillary Clinton e-mail probe. He complained again that Comey decided to clear Clinton before she was even interviewed. That’s based on newly released draft statements by Comey from May of 2016. FBI officials say it was already clear that no charges were warranted. On another issue, the president faced fallout over the death of Army Sergeant La David Johnson in Niger this month. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson says she was with Mrs. Johnson when the president called. The Florida Democrat told The Washington Post that Mr. Trump said — quote — “He knew what he was signing up for, but I guess it hurts anyway.” The sergeant’s mother confirmed it, but the president denied it, and White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders went after Wilson. SARAH SANDERS, White House Press Secretary: This is a president who loves our country very much, who has the greatest level of respect for men and women in uniform and wanted to call and offer condolences to the family, and I think to try to create something from that, that the congresswoman is doing, is, frankly, appalling and disgusting. HARI SREENIVASAN: The Post also reported on another incident today. It quoted the father of a soldier killed in Afghanistan as saying the president offered $25,000 from his personal account, but never followed through. We will get more detail on all of this after the news summary. The death toll in Northern California’s wildfires rose to 42 today. Officials in Sonoma County found the remains of the latest victim, as they searched hundreds of burned homes. Meanwhile, fire crews made new gains overnight with the help of cooler weather and low winds. A two-time Olympic medalist says the former team doctor for U.S. women’s gymnastics sexually abused her for years. McKayla Maroney is the highest profile athlete to come forward in the scandal. In a statement today, she said Dr. Larry Nassar began molesting her when she was just 13. He’s awaiting sentencing on a child pornography charge, but has denied any sexual abuse. More questions tonight about drug pricing. A new study finds the costs of injectable cancer drugs, approved since 1996, rose an average of 25 percent over eight years. That’s far higher than the rate of inflation. The study was based at Emory University and published in “The Journal of Clinical Oncology.” And on Wall Street, health insurers and IBM fueled a surge in stocks today. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 160 points, more than half-a-percent, to close above 23000 for the first time. The Nasdaq rose just a fraction, and the S&P 500 was up two points.
