Batsman should be given out LBW if any ball goes on to hit the stumps: Chappell

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has proposed radical changes in the LBW laws, stating that a batsman should be given out leg before as long as the ball is hitting the stumps irrespective of the spot of its landing and impact. Chappell also said captains should agree on one way of working up the ball which will encourage swing bowling, even as the ICC is considering the use of artificial substances to shine the ball instead of sweat and saliva in post COVID-19 scenario. "The new lbw law should simply say: 'Any delivery that strikes the pad without first hitting the bat and, in the umpire's opinion, would go on to hit the stumps is out regardless of whether or not a shot is attempted'," he wrote in a column for ESPNcricinfo. "Forget where the ball pitches and whether it strikes the pad outside the line or not; if it's going to hit the stumps, it's out." The 76-year-old said the change in lbw law would attract expected criticism from the batsmen but it would make the game more ...

Bulletproof HTML5 `<details>` fallback using jQuery

The HTML5

element is currently not natively supported in any browser natively supported in Chrome 12 and up. This makes it a little hard to guess how exactly this new element will behave, but reading the spec gives us a pretty good idea. While we wait for browsers to implement it, how about we create a fallback/polyfill for browsers who don’t understand
(yet)?

Using the `oninput` event handler with `onkeyup`/`onkeydown` as its fallback

HTML5 standardizes the oninput event handler, which should be used to detect user input in JavaScript. Sure, you could use onkeydown or onkeyup instead, but those were never really designed for this particular use case, and it shows.

My Mailbox Overfloweth but I Don't Have Time for Your Unsubscribe #wtfUX

September 17, 2015

"Don't you love the way companies find you and spam you daily the moment you make a sideways glance towards one of their products?" Indrani Stangl asks us. It's a good question. It's all too easy to get sucked into a newsletter situation. Some of them are good, many of them are all kinds of blight. Here, Stangl goes deeper into the unsubcribe dilemma.

My inbox, like everyone else's, is brimming with newsletters, offers, coupons, and other nonsense. Why I would take the time to read a newsletter by a staffer at 'Nothing Bundt Cakes' (don't get me started on ridiculous company names) or the place I purchased dog poop bags from, is beyond me. Generally speaking I filter these directly into my trash file, but every once in a while, enough is enough. I take the time to click the 'unsubscribe' link that is in .00001 type at the very bottom of their message.
Then starts the drill....read more

X-ray free-electron laser wavefront sensing using the fractional Talbot effect

Wavefront sensing at X-ray free-electron lasers is important for quantitatively understanding the fundamental properties of the laser, for aligning X-ray instruments and for conducting scientific experimental analysis. A fractional Talbot wavefront sensor has been developed. This wavefront sensor enables measurements over a wide range of energies, as is common on X-ray instruments, with simplified mechanical requirements and is compatible with the high average power pulses expected in upcoming X-ray free-electron laser upgrades. Single-shot measurements were performed at 500 eV, 1000 eV and 1500 eV at the Linac Coherent Light Source. These measurements were applied to study both mirror alignment and the effects of undulator tapering schemes on source properties. The beamline focal plane position was tracked to an uncertainty of 0.12 mm, and the source location for various undulator tapering schemes to an uncertainty of 1 m, demonstrating excellent sensitivity. These findings pave the way to use the fractional Talbot wavefront sensor as a routine, robust and sensitive tool at X-ray free-electron lasers as well as other high-brightness X-ray sources.

5-Chloro-2-ferrocenylbenzo[d]oxazole

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Fe(C5H5)(C12H7ClNO)], consists of one ferrocenyl group bonded to chlorobenzo[d]oxazole. The conformation of the ferrocenyl moiety is slightly away from eclipsed. The bond angles between the 5-chloro-benzoxazole and ferrocenyl fragments are N—C—C = 127.4 (7)° and O—C—C = 116.8 (7)°. The benzo[d]oxazole ring is planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.0042 Å) and makes an angle of 11.3 (4)° with the cyclopentadienyl ring attached to it. The crystal packing is characterized by intermolecular π–π contacts, resulting in chain formation along the b-axis direction. The centroid-to-centroid distance between the six- and five-membered rings is 3.650 (5) Å. Together with a C—H⋯π interaction, these intermolecular contacts form laminar arrays along the ac plane.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 2,2'-{(1E,1'E)-[ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanylylidene)]bis(methanylylidene)}bis[4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenol]copper(II) hydroquinone hemisolvate

In the title complex, [Cu(C18H12F6N2O4)]·0.5C6H6O2, the CuII ion has a square-planar coordination geometry, being ligated by two N and two O atoms of the tetradentate open-chain Schiff base ligand 6,6'-{(1E,1'E)-[ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanylylidene)]bis(methanylylidene)}bis[2-(trifluoromethoxy)phenol]. The crystal packing is stabilized by intramolecular O—H⋯O and intermolecular C—H⋯F, C—H⋯O and C—H⋯π hydrogen bonds. In addition, weak π–π interactions form a three-dimensional structure. Hirshfeld surface analysis and two-dimensional fingerprint plots were performed and created to analyze the intermolecular interactions present in the crystal, indicating that the most important contributions for the crystal packing are from F⋯H/H⋯F (25.7%), H⋯H (23.5%) and C⋯H/H⋯C (12.6%) interactions.

Crystal structure of 1-[(4-methylbenzene)sulfonyl]pyrrolidine

The molecular structure of the title compound, C11H15NO2S, features a sulfonamide group with S=O bond lengths of 1.4357 (16) and 1.4349 (16) Å, an S—N bond length of 1.625 (2) Å, and an S—C bond length of 1.770 (2) Å. When viewing the molecule down the S—N bond, both N—C bonds of the pyrrolidine ring are oriented gauche to the S—C bond with torsion angles of −65.6 (2)° and 76.2 (2)°. The crystal structure features both intra- and intermolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, as well as intermolecular C—H⋯π and π–π interactions, leading to the formation of sheets parallel to the ac plane.

A phase-retrieval toolbox for X-ray holography and tomography

Propagation-based phase-contrast X-ray imaging is by now a well established imaging technique, which – as a full-field technique – is particularly useful for tomography applications. Since it can be implemented with synchrotron radiation and at laboratory micro-focus sources, it covers a wide range of applications. A limiting factor in its development has been the phase-retrieval step, which was often performed using methods with a limited regime of applicability, typically based on linearization. In this work, a much larger set of algorithms, which covers a wide range of cases (experimental parameters, objects and constraints), is compiled into a single toolbox – the HoloTomoToolbox – which is made publicly available. Importantly, the unified structure of the implemented phase-retrieval functions facilitates their use and performance test on different experimental data.

The site-symmetry induced representations of layer groups on the Bilbao Crystallographic Server

The section of the Bilbao Crystallographic Server (http://www.cryst.ehu.es) dedicated to subperiodic groups includes a new tool called LSITESYM for the study of materials with layer and multilayer symmetry. This new program, based on the site-symmetry approach, establishes the symmetry relations between localized and extended crystal states using representations of layer groups. The efficiency and utility of the program LSITESYM is demonstrated by illustrative examples, which include the analysis of phonon symmetry in Aurivillius compounds and in van der Waals layered crystals MoS2 and WS2.
