What Africa Can Learn from China about Growing its Agribusiness Sector

There is growing evidence that the Chinese economic miracle is a consequence of the rural entrepreneurship which started in the 1980s. This contradicts classical interpretations that focus on state-led enterprises and receptiveness to foreign direct investment....The lesson from China's experience is that development must be viewed as an expression of human potentialities, not as a product of external interventions.

24 Growling Giggle-Worthy Grumpy Feline Memes to Guarantee That You Have a Purrfectly Terrible Meownday

Ugh, is it really Meownday again? For once in our lives, we don't have anything funny to say about it - this is because we're still half asleep and our brains are back in bed. But, instead of being tucked in underneath our fuzzy blankets, we're in the cold on our way into the office. How else are we supposed to feel except grumpy? The vibes are in the air, and they aren't holiday vibes, nor pawsitive vibes, but curiously cantankerous vibes for all of us grumpy cats today.

Don't talk to us today unless you want to be growled at, grumpiness in the only company we need (and cat memes). Good thing cats are known for being grouchy, especially if you make them do something they don't want to do, so we're embracing our inner feline today and taking inspawration from these growling giggle-worthy funny felines to make sure we have a purrfectly terrible Meownday. Remember, if you expect the worst, you can never be disappointed.

HaBO: He’s Described as a Lion with Tawny Eyes

This HaBO comes from Kiruthika, who is trying to find this Mills & Boon romance. Content warning for mentions of abuse and rape: It’s a 70s or 80s Mills and Boon that my mom had that I sneakily read as a 12 year old! 'She has a temper [...] I hate her': 16-year-old girl refuses to tutor her terrible 15-year old sister despite parents' threats of punishment

We're often taught that we have an obligation to love our family and that "blood is thicker than water." While this is overly simplistic, I think it remains true that we should try harder to make things work with our family than we would with other random people. We should seek to resolve issues that reasonably can be resolved with a higher obligation than we would with friends and acquaintances. But even with family, there is a point where cutting ties becomes the only option.

Still, these sisters may come to find they grow closer as they grow older and as whatever chip this younger sister has on her shoulder subsides and she matures—or they may never come to find common ground, with old deep cuts festering and becoming impossible to resolve and move past. But, for now, it's hard to say that the older sister is wrong for not wanting to help her sister out. Siblings are going to fight, but there's a point where things go way too far, and the parents desperately need to intervene. Perhaps the parents would be better off just hiring a tutor to help her with the subjects she's falling behind in.

Expanded distribution in the US for BBC World News

This week viewers to BBC World News have been watching a series of reports focusing on the Arab uprisings, two years after they first began. Correspondents have been in Damascus, Tunis, Cairo, the Syria-Lebanon border and elsewhere. Their eyewitness TV reporting is accompanied by further explanation and analysis on our website, bbc.com/news. These are expert journalists, with years of experience and knowledge, living the story on behalf of the audience. They demonstrate our commitment to reporting the world, and bringing clarity to complex events.

Until now, however, viewers in the world's biggest TV market, the US, have found it hard to access BBC reporting of this kind. The market is saturated with TV channels, but for the past couple of years we've been very focused on securing widespread carriage on the distribution systems which bring TV into most homes.

So today the BBC is delighted to announce we have agreed to a partnership with the US cable giant - Time Warner Cable - and through this and other deals, a further 10 million homes in the US will have access to BBC World News 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This means by the end of this year we will be available in 25 million homes, including those in most of the major markets - New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston. There is still some way to go before we can say we have reached everyone - but 2012 has been a year of significant breakthroughs for us in the US.

The BBC is already well-known in America through its partnerships with public radio, through the success of our website BBC.com/news, and because of our nightly broadcast on public television fronted by Katty Kay. We believe our brand of high-quality, intelligent and non-partisan journalism has something to offer US audiences, and we're determined to make access to our services as simple as possible.

The timing could not be better. We're just a few weeks away from the first broadcasts of BBC World News from our brand new headquarters in central London. Three new studios, a big investment in production and journalism, and working more closely with BBC journalists working in English and 27 other languages - it's more than just a new home, it's a new start. We're delighted to share that even more widely.

Richard Porter is controller of English at BBC Global News

The Ideal Mix For Hotel Distribution: Direct Bookings to Lead by 2030

By 2030, direct digital bookings are expected to reshape the landscape of hotel distribution, overtaking online travel agencies (OTAs) as the primary channel for global hotel reservations. Skift Research’s 2024 Hotel Distribution Outlook reveals that while OTAs currently dominate the market, hotels are increasingly focusing on direct digital channels to engage travelers more effectively and reduce dependency on intermediaries. This shift is projected to generate $409 billion in global hotel bookings through direct digital channels by the end of the decade, marking a pivotal transition in how consumers book travel accommodations.
