Cognitive Effort Modulates Connectivity between Dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex and Task-Relevant Cortical Areas

Investment of cognitive effort is required in everyday life and has received ample attention in recent neurocognitive frameworks. The neural mechanism of effort investment is thought to be structured hierarchically, with dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) at the highest level, recruiting task-specific upstream areas. In the current fMRI study, we tested whether dACC is generally active when effort demand is high across tasks with different stimuli, and whether connectivity between dACC and task-specific areas is increased depending on the task requirements and effort level at hand. For that purpose, a perceptual detection task was administered that required male and female human participants to detect either a face or a house in a noisy image. Effort demand was manipulated by adding little (low effort) or much (high effort) noise to the images. Results showed a network of dACC, anterior insula (AI), and intraparietal sulcus (IPS) to be more active when effort demand was high, independent of the performed task (face or house detection). Importantly, effort demand modulated functional connectivity between dACC and face-responsive or house-responsive perceptual areas, depending on the task at hand. This shows that dACC, AI, and IPS constitute a general effort-responsive network and suggests that the neural implementation of cognitive effort involves dACC-initiated sensitization of task-relevant areas.

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Although cognitive effort is generally perceived as aversive, its investment is inevitable when navigating an increasingly complex society. In this study, we demonstrate how the human brain tailors the implementation of effort to the requirements of the task at hand. We show increased effort-related activity in a network of brain areas consisting of dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), anterior insula, and intraparietal sulcus, independent of task specifics. Crucially, we also show that effort-induced functional connectivity between dACC and task-relevant areas tracks specific task demands. These results demonstrate how brain regions specialized to solve a task may be energized by dACC when effort demand is high.

Predictors of Cognitive Function and Recovery 10 Years After Traumatic Brain Injury in Young Children

Previous research has demonstrated that young children with traumatic brain injury are at elevated risk of poor outcomes, particularly following severe injuries. These deficits persist until at least 5 years postinsult. Factors predicting outcomes in this age group have not been established.

This study follows survivors of very early traumatic brain injury into adolescence. Results indicate that severe injury is associated with poorest outcome, but after 3 years, the gap between children with severe traumatic brain injury and peers stabilizes. (Read the full article)

Antenatal Antecedents of Cognitive Impairment at 24 Months In Extremely Low Gestational Age Newborns

Among extremely premature infants, survival has improved, but the rate of cognitive impairment has not. Impaired cognition is the most frequent developmental problem identified in survivors. Several antenatal factors have been associated with cognitive impairment, mostly related to social disadvantage.

In addition to social disadvantage, antenatal characteristics associated with cognitive impairment include maternal obesity and thrombosis of fetal stem vessels. Maternal Serum Vitamin D Levels During Pregnancy and Offspring Neurocognitive Development

Vitamin D levels in the general population have decreased considerably over the past decade. The implications of maternal vitamin D insufficiency during pregnancy for offspring neurocognitive development remain unclear.

Very preterm children are at risk for developmental problems and, therefore, a systematic follow-up is important. However, the relevance of early follow-up of cognitive development has been questioned because of the divergent data on the prognostic value of early measures.

Good stability of cognitive development was found between the ages of 2 and 5 years. Qualitative Brain MRI at Term and Cognitive Outcomes at 9 Years After Very Preterm Birth

Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated associations between the white matter injury and cognitive impairment in very preterm born children. Longitudinal studies confirmed the relationships between cerebral MRI at term and neurodevelopmental outcomes at up to 2 years old.

Neurocognitive Phenotype of Isolated Methylmalonic Acidemia

Isolated methylmalonic acidemia, one of the most common inborn errors of organic acid metabolism, is known to be associated with variably impaired intellectual functioning and severe biochemical and clinical abnormalities. However, the neurocognitive outcomes have yet to be fully described.

This research defines the neurocognitive phenotype of isolated methylmalonic acidemia and identifies processing speed as a specific impairment. Maternal Multiple Micronutrient Supplements and Child Cognition: A Randomized Trial in Indonesia

Micronutrients are essential for brain development during gestation and infancy. Few randomized trials of maternal multiple micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy and postpartum have examined child outcomes beyond the neonatal period or tested which cognitive domains show long-term effects.

Children of undernourished mothers given multiple micronutrients performed as well as children of well-nourished mothers in motor and visual attention/spatial ability at age 42 months; children of undernourished mothers given iron/folic acid showed 4- to 5-month delays in these abilities. Long-term Differences in Language and Cognitive Function After Childhood Exposure to Anesthesia

Immature animals exposed to anesthetics display apoptotic neurodegeneration and long-term cognitive deficiencies. In children, studies of cognitive deficits associated with anesthesia exposure have yielded mixed results. Maternal Prepregnancy BMI and Child Cognition: A Longitudinal Cohort Study

Maternal obesity is an increasingly important public health concern and may adversely affect central nervous system development in offspring. However, few studies have explored the relationship between maternal prepregnancy BMI and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children, with conflicting results.

Using data from a large and contemporary UK birth cohort, we found that maternal prepregnancy BMI is negatively associated with children’s cognitive performance. Effects of Iron Supplementation of LBW Infants on Cognition and Behavior at 3 Years

Low birth weight (LBW) infants (<2500 g) are at risk for cognitive and behavioral problems later in life. During infancy, they are also at risk for iron deficiency, which has been associated with impaired neurodevelopment in other high-risk groups.

Iron supplementation during the first 6 months of life to LBW infants reduces the risk of behavioral problems at 3.5 years. Mild iron deficiency in infancy may be an important, preventable contributor to behavioral problems in children born with LBW. (Read the full article)

Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Pediatric Functional Abdominal Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Pediatric functional abdominal pain is common and costly. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a promising treatment for these complaints, but solid evidence for its effectiveness is lacking.

This randomized controlled trial shows that CBT reduces abdominal pain in 60% of children 1 year after treatment. Six sessions of CBT delivered by trained master’s students in psychology were equally effective as 6 visits to an experienced pediatrician. (Read the full article)

Antenatal and Postnatal Growth and 5-Year Cognitive Outcome in Very Preterm Infants

Better postnatal growth, especially head growth, associates with better cognitive development in preterm infants. Suboptimal postnatal growth is more common in infants with poor antenatal growth than in infants with normal growth.

Sibship size has been negatively associated with children’s language, cognitive, and academic outcomes. This phenomenon is often explained in terms of resource dilution, wherein more children in the home is associated with fewer parental resources allocated to each child.

Greater numbers of invasive procedures from birth to term-equivalent age, adjusted for clinical confounders, are associated with altered brain microstructure during neonatal care and poorer cognitive outcome at 18 months’ corrected age in children born very preterm.

Altered myelination at school age is associated with greater numbers of invasive procedures during hospitalization in very preterm children without severe brain injury or neurosensory impairment. Cognitive Outcomes of Preterm Infants Randomized to Darbepoetin, Erythropoietin, or Placebo

Although a number of randomized controlled trials of erythropoietin administration to preterm infants have been performed, few studies have reported 2-year or longer neurodevelopmental outcomes, and no studies have evaluated neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants randomized to receive Darbepoetin.

Cognitive Deficit and Mental Health in Homeless Transition-Age Youth

Neurocognitive deficits, academic delays, and behavioral and emotional problems are well documented in school-age children in relation to socioeconomic disadvantage and residential instability. Cognitive-Behavioral Counseling for Exclusive Breastfeeding in Rural Pediatrics: A Cluster RCT

Exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of an infant’s age is described as the safest, most powerful and cost-effective intervention to reduce infant morbidity and mortality globally. In developing countries, only ~25% of infants are exclusively breastfed for 6 months.

We developed a psycho-educational intervention combining education with techniques of cognitive-behavioral therapy, integrated it into the routine work of community health workers, which increased the rate and duration of exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of an infant’s age. Cognitive Ability at Kindergarten Entry and Socioeconomic Status

Previous research has established steep socioeconomic status gradients in children’s cognitive ability at kindergarten entry. Few studies have had comprehensive data to examine the contribution of a wide range of risk and protective factors across early childhood to these gradients.

Cognitive Outcomes After Neonatal Encephalopathy

Surviving infants with neonatal encephalopathy treated with hypothermia have lower rates of moderate to severe cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment at 18 to 24 months. Limited data exist on the association between cognitive functioning and neuromotor, behavioral, and school outcomes.

Late Preterm Birth and Neurocognitive Performance in Late Adulthood: A Birth Cohort Study

More than 70% of all preterm deliveries are late preterm (34–36 weeks of gestation). Existing evidence suggests that compared with those born at term, those born late preterm score lower on neurocognitive tests in childhood and young adulthood.

The effect of late preterm birth on neurocognitive performance persists up to late adulthood, especially among those who have only a basic or upper secondary level of education. Late preterm birth is also associated with a risk of memory impairments. (Read the full article)

Bayley-III Cognitive and Language Scales in Preterm Children

There is concern that the Bayley-III overestimates developmental functioning in preterm populations. The ability of the Bayley-III Cognitive and Language scales to predict later functioning in very preterm children has not been examined.

Head Growth and Neurocognitive Outcomes

Microcephaly is known to be associated with neurocognitive disorders and increasing head size with hydrocephalus. Head circumference is widely measured in childhood, but its practical value as a screening test is unclear.

Measured head size is not a stable characteristic and centile shifts occur very commonly, mostly reflecting measurement error or regression to the mean. Even where head size was consistently extreme, it was not a good predictor of later developmental problems. (Read the full article)

Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Cognition in VLBW Infants at 8 years: an RCT

Suboptimal brain development and increased risk of cognitive deficits are well documented in very low birth weight children. Supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid has been associated with positive cognitive effects.

This follow-up study of a randomized controlled trial of supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid to very low birth weight infants is the first report on both cognition and brain macrostructure measured with MRI.
