South Korea's president says his proposal to North Korea on jointly tackling infectious diseases such as the COVID-19 illness remains valid, though the North hasn't responded. President Moon Jae-in told reporters Sunday that he believes the North is suffering various difficulties over the coronavirus pandemic. Moon didn't elaborate. His spy agency recently told lawmakers the virus pandemic resulted in sharply shrinking the North's external trade and causing panic buying in Pyongyang, the North's capital. Moon says he'll try to persuade North Korea to accept his offers for reconciliation projects after the pandemic is stabilized. Moon has proposed reconnecting severed railways, resuming reunions of families split by war and sending South Korean tourists to North Korea. North Korea has been taking intense anti-virus quarantine steps but it has steadfastly claimed there hasn't been a single case of the coronavirus on its territory. Many foreign experts are skeptical of the North's claim.

Linear array detector for online diagnostics of spectral distributions at MHz repetition rates

Free-electron lasers (FELs) based on superconducting accelerator technology and storage ring facilities operate with bunch repetition rates in the MHz range, and the need arises for bunch-by-bunch electron and photon diagnostics. For photon-pulse-resolved measurements of spectral distributions, fast one-dimensional profile monitors are required. The linear array detector KALYPSO (KArlsruhe Linear arraY detector for MHz-rePetition rate SpectrOscopy) has been developed for electron bunch or photon pulse synchronous read-out with frame rates of up to 2.7 MHz. At the FLASH facility at DESY, a current version of KALYPSO with 256 pixels has been installed at a grating spectrometer as online diagnostics to monitor the pulse-resolved spectra of the high-repetition-rate FEL pulses. Application-specific front-end electronics based on MicroTCA standard have been developed for data acquisition and processing. Continuous data read-out with low latency in the microsecond range enables the integration into fast feedback applications. In this paper, pulse-resolved FEL spectra recorded at 1.0 MHz repetition rate for various operation conditions at FLASH are presented, and the first application of an adaptive feedback for accelerator control based on photon beam diagnostics is demonstrated.

The asymmetric units of the title compounds, trans-di­aqua­(3-benzyl-1,3,5,8,12-penta­aza­cyclo­tetra­decane-κ4N1,N5,N8,N12)copper(II) isophthalate monohydrate, [Cu(C16H29N5)(H2O)2](C8H4O4)·H2O, (I), and trans-di­aqua­[3-(pyridin-3-ylmeth­yl)-1,3,5,8,12-penta­aza­cyclo­tetra­decane-κ4N1,N5,N8,N12]copper(II) iso­phthalate 0.9-hydrate, [Cu(C15H28N6)(H2O)2](C8H4O4)·0.9H2O, (II) consist of one di­aqua macrocyclic cation, one di­carboxyl­ate anion and uncoordinated water mol­ecule(s). In each compound, the metal ion is coordinated by the four secondary N atoms of the macrocyclic ligand and the mutually trans O atoms of the water mol­ecules in a tetra­gonally distorted octa­hedral geometry. The average equatorial Cu—N bond lengths are significantly shorter than the average axial Cu—O bond lengths [2.020 (9) versus 2.495 (12) Å and 2.015 (4) versus 2.507 (7) Å for (I) and (II), respectively]. The coordinated macrocyclic ligand in the cations of both compounds adopts the most energetically favorable trans-III conformation. In the crystals, the complex cations and counter-anions are connected via hydrogen-bonding inter­actions between the N—H groups of the macrocycles and the O—H groups of coordinated water mol­ecules as the proton donors and the O atoms of the carboxyl­ate as the proton acceptors. Additionally, as a result of O—H⋯O hydrogen bonding with the coordinated and water mol­ecules of crystallization, the isophthalate dianions form layers lying parallel to the (overline{1}01) and (100) planes in (I) and (II), respectively.

Crystal structures and comparisons of huntite aluminum borates REAl3(BO3)4 (RE = Tb, Dy and Ho)

Three huntite-type aluminoborates of stoichiometry REAl3(BO3)4 (RE = Tb, Dy and Ho), namely, terbium/dysprosium/holmium trialuminium tetrakis(borate), were synthesized by slow cooling within a K2Mo3O10 flux with spontaneous crystallization. The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) data. The synthesized borates are isostructural to the huntite [CaMg3(CO3)4] structure and crystallized within the trigonal R32 space group. The structural parameters were compared to literature data of other huntite REAl3(BO3)4 crystals within the R32 space group. All three borates fit well into the trends calculated from the literature data. The unit-cell parameters and volumes increase linearly with larger RE cations whereas the densities decrease. All of the crystals studied were refined as inversion twins.

Two salts were prepared by methyl­ation of the respective imidazoline-2-thione at the sulfur atom, using Meerwein's salt (tri­methyl­oxonium tetra­fluorido­borate) in CH2Cl2. 1,3-Dimeth­oxy-2-(methyl­sulfan­yl)imidazolium tetra­fluorido­borate (1), C6H11N2O2S+·BF4−, displays a syn conformation of its two meth­oxy groups relative to each other whereas the two benz­yloxy groups present in 1,3-dibenz­yloxy-2-(methyl­sulfan­yl)imidazolium tetra­fluorido­borate (2), C18H19N2O2S+·BF4−, adopt an anti conformation. In the mol­ecules of 1 and 2, the methyl­sulfanyl group is rotated out of the plane of the respective heterocyclic ring. In both crystal structures, inter­molecular inter­actions are dominated by C—H⋯F—B contacts, leading to three-dimensional networks. The tetra­fluorido­borate counter-ion of 2 is disordered over three orientations (occupancy ratio 0.42:0.34:0.24), which are related by rotation about one of the B—F bonds.

Ubc13-Mms2 cooperates with a family of RING E3s in membrane protein sorting [RESEARCH ARTICLE]

Polyubiquitin chains linked via lysine (K) 63 play an important role in endocytosis and membrane trafficking. Their primary source is the ubiquitin protein ligase (E3) Rsp5/NEDD4, which acts as a key regulator of membrane protein sorting. The heterodimeric ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (E2), Ubc13-Mms2, catalyses K63-specific polyubiquitylation in genome maintenance and inflammatory signalling. In budding yeast, the only ubiquitin protein ligase (E3) known to cooperate with Ubc13-Mms2 so far is a nuclear RING finger protein, Rad5, involved in the replication of damaged DNA. We now report a contribution of Ubc13-Mms2 to the sorting of membrane proteins to the yeast vacuole via the multivesicular body (MVB) pathway. In this context, Ubc13-Mms2 cooperates with Pib1, a FYVE-RING finger protein associated with internal membranes. Moreover, we identified a family of membrane-associated FYVE-(type)-RING finger proteins as cognate E3s for Ubc13-Mms2 in several species, and genetic analysis indicates that the contribution of Ubc13-Mms2 to membrane trafficking in budding yeast goes beyond its cooperation with Pib1. Thus, our results widely implicate Ubc13-Mms2 as an Rsp5-independent source of K63-linked polyubiquitin chains in the regulation of membrane protein sorting.

After 20 months of work, a $41-million reconstruction project at The Music Center in downtown Los Angeles was completed with this week. 

The goal is to be more welcoming to everyone, not just those who can afford tickets to the opera or the theater, Music Center President and CEO Rachel Moore said. 

The plaza will be home to performances, screenings, and other public events, most of which will be free or low-cost.

Sea level rise may cause soils in coastal regions to become more saline. In a recent study, reproduction in soil invertebrates was impaired in soils containing salt levels below the threshold used currently to define saline soils.
