The Big Question: What Do the Proposed EPA Regulations Mean for the Energy Industry?

In June, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rule to restrict the amount of carbon dioxide released from power plants. The rule calls for reducing carbon 30 percent by 2030 over 2005 levels. Many have praised the aggressive proposal, while others are less favorable.

What Business Are Electric Utilities In?

Many businesses can now perform the traditional functions of an electric utility — provide affordable, reliable, resilient power to homes and businesses. The barriers to entry in the business have fallen. For instance, a home with rooftop solar panels, batteries, and gas-based generators may choose to be grid-independent. Even when homes decide to remain grid-tied, utilities face falling demand and revenue, and the possibility of future grid-defection. Further, competing electricity solutions can emerge quickly, and not one-home-at-a-time — microgrids can offer community, village, or campus-level solutions.

Texas Senator Seeks to Dismantle What He Helped Create: The Renewable Portfolio Standard

Sen. Troy Fraser (R-Horseshoe Bay) has filed a bill that would eliminate Texas’ Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) – a policy that has catapulted Texas to world leadership in wind energy and strengthened Texas’ energy diversity. In addition to terminating the RPS at the end of the year, SB 931would make it more difficult to build renewable energy infrastructure. The argument behind the bill is that because Texas has achieved its RPS goals it’s time to move on. Sounds reasonable, right? Well…

What to do about PG&E? Cities and others offer ideas

Plenty of people, it seems, have plans for PG&E Corp. Even before the California utility giant filed for bankruptcy facing $30 billion in potential liabilities from wildfires, state regulators began studying whether it needed to be reformed, restructured or even taken over by the government. They asked interested parties -- city officials, unions, consumer groups and trade associations -- to chime in.

Pursuing North Korea Sanctions That Work

Pursuing North Korea Sanctions That Work
EWC Non-Resident Senior Fellow Marcus Noland, who has done extensive economic and political research on North Korea, argues in an op-ed published in the current issue of Newsweek ’s international edition that the Obama administration and world community are unlikely to deter North Korea from staging another missile launch simply by the threat of a return to limited and “toothless” U.N economic sanctions, which have failed in the past. However, Noland writes, other, more substantive measures have previously proved more successful in dealing with the North Korean regime, including cutting off oil deliveries from China and freezing the regime’s overseas bank assets.
