Well, using @Esri ArcGIS Pro Network Analysis toolset! In general terms, there were 4 steps:1. Created a dot grid for the whole of the continental U.S. This grid is what enables the routes to be created to D.C. A dot was also created for D.C.2. Run Network Analysis to find the shortest route to D.C. from each dot.3. Run a calculation for the number of overlapping routes (shown as the stronger strokes on the roadways)4. Then, of the 4 main spokes I saw, I copied them over into their own layers and colored them accordingly.Red generally follows I-70 to I-270, Green generally follows I-81 to I-66, Blue generally follows I-95 south of D.C., Orange generally follows I-95 north of D.C. dc The Adventure zone : the crystal kingdom / based on the podcast by Griffin McElroy, Clint McElroy, Travis McElroy, Justin McElroy ; adaptation by Clint McElroy, Carey Pietsch ; art by Carey Pietsch. By library.gcpl.lib.oh.us Published On :: "A desperate call for help interrupts holiday celebrations at the Bureau of Balance, and sends Taako, Magnus and Merle on a high-stakes mission to find and reclaim a fourth deadly relic: a powerful transmutation stone, hidden somewhere in the depths of a floating arcane laboratory that's home to the Doctors Maureen and Lucas Miller. An unknown menace has seized control of the stone, and is using it to transform the lab into a virulent pink crystal that spreads to everything it touches. It's only a matter of time before this sparkling disaster crash-lands, but in order to find the stone and save the whole planet from being King Midased, our heroes will have to fight their way through a gauntlet of rowdy robots and crystal golems, decide whether they can trust the evasive Lucas Miller, and solve the mystery of what— or who— has put them all in peril, before there's no world left to save." -- Provided by publisher Full Article

dc DCMB / CCMB Weekly Seminar featuring Karen Miga, PhD (UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute) (November 13, 2024 4:00pm) By events.umich.edu Published On :: Mon, 04 Nov 2024 15:18:54 -0500 Event Begins: Wednesday, November 13, 2024 4:00pm Location: Palmer Commons Organized By: DCMB Seminar Series Abstract: The initial Human Genome Project was a landmark achievement, serving as an essential resource for basic and clinical science, as well as for understanding human history, for over two decades. However, it needs an upgrade due to missing data, inaccurately assembled regions, and its inability to fully represent and identify sequence variants equitably. A single reference map, regardless of its completeness, cannot encapsulate the variation across the human population, leading to biases and ultimately inequity in genomic studies. Recognizing this limitation, the new initiative known as the Human Pangenome Project aims to deliver hundreds of highly accurate and complete genomes. This effort intends to define all bases of each chromosome from telomere to telomere (T2T), ensuring a broader representation of common variants across the human species. Achieving these goals will require the rise of new tools and technology standards for complete genome assemblies and pangenomics, which will have broad and lasting impact on genomic research. Short bio: Throughout her career, she has developed innovative computational and experimental approaches to advance understanding of centromeric and pericentromeric DNAs. She works at the forefront of genome technologies as part of the T2T and Pangenome initiative to construct genetic and epigenetic maps to expand our understanding of their structure and function. As a group leader, she prioritizes fostering a creative and scientifically rigorous environment that supports inclusivity and diversity within our scientific team. She also prioritizes training that operates at the intersection of science, justice, and equity. Full Article Lecture / Discussion
dc AI Podcast 1.0: Rise of the machines By www.npr.org Published On :: Fri, 26 May 2023 21:42:53 +0000 We used to think some jobs were safe from automation. Though machines have transformed industries like agriculture and manufacturing, the conventional wisdom was that they could never perform what's called "knowledge work." That the robots could never replace lawyers or accountants — or journalists, like us.Well, ever since the release of artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, it feels like no job is safe. AI can now write essays, generate computer code, and even pass the bar exam. Will work ever be the same again? Here at Planet Money, we are launching a new three-part series to understand what this new AI-powered future looks like. Our goal: to get the machines to make an entire Planet Money show. In this first episode, we try to teach the AI how to write a script for us from scratch. Can the AI do research for us, interview our sources, and then stitch everything together in a creative, entertaining way? We're going to find out just how much of our own jobs we can automate — and what work might soon look like for us all.(And, in case you're wondering... this text was not written by an AI.)This episode was produced by Emma Peaslee and Willa Rubin. It was edited by Keith Romer. Maggie Luthar engineered this episode. It was fact-checked by Sierra Juarez. dc AI Podcast 2.0: The host in the machine By www.npr.org Published On :: Wed, 31 May 2023 23:32:56 +0000 In Part 1 of this series, AI proved that it could use real research and real interviews to write an original script for an episode of Planet Money. Our next task was to teach the computer how to sound like us. How to read that script aloud like a Planet Money host.On today's show, we explore the world of AI-generated voices, which have become so lifelike in recent years that they can credibly imitate specific people. To test the limits of the technology, we attempt to create our own synthetic voice by training a computer on recordings of former Planet Money host Robert Smith. Then we introduce synthetic Robert to his very human namesake. There are a lot of ethical, and economic, questions raised by a technology that can duplicate anyone's voice. To help us make sense of it all, we seek the advice of an artist who has embraced AI voice clones: the musician Grimes. This episode was produced by Emma Peaslee and Willa Rubin, with help from Sam Yellowhorse Kesler. It was edited by Keith Romer and fact-checked by Sierra Juarez. Engineering by James Willetts. Jess Jiang is our acting executive producer. We built a Planet Money AI chat bot. dc AI Podcast 3.0: Dial M for Mechanization By www.npr.org Published On :: Fri, 02 Jun 2023 22:32:58 +0000 It's the thrilling conclusion to our three-part series on AI — the world premiere of the first episode of Planet Money written by AI. In Part 1 of this series, we taught AI how to write an original Planet Money script by feeding it real research and interviews. In Part 2, we used AI to clone the voice of our former colleague Robert Smith. Now, we've put everything together into a 15-minute Planet Money episode. And we've gathered some of our co-hosts to listen along. So, how did the AI do? You'll have to listen to learn what went surprisingly well, where it fell short, and hear reactions from the real-life hosts whose jobs could be at risk of being replaced by the machines. This episode was produced by Emma Peaslee and Willa Rubin. It was engineered by James Willetts and fact-checked by Sierra Juarez. Keith Romer edited this series and Jess Jiang is our acting executive producer.
