ww 21-Year Old WWII Soldier's Sketchbooks Are Visual Diary of War By www.metafilter.com Published On :: Sat, 16 Nov 2019 01:41:53 -0800 21-Year Old WWII Soldier's Sketchbooks Reveal a Visual Diary of His Experiences A visual diary with 158 pencil sketches brings to life the wartime experience of noted architect Victor A. Lundy, who served in the U.S. 26th Infantry Division during World War II. In 1942, Lundy was 19, studying to be an architect in New York City. Excited about rebuilding Europe post-war, he and other college men enlisted in the Army Special Training Program (ASTP). But, by 1944, with D-Day planned, the Army needed reinforcements, and Lundy and his company were thrown into the infantry. Lundy couldn't believe it and recalled during an oral history interview that during lectures, he "never listened, I was busy sketching." But soon, "I sort of took to it. ... war experience just hypnotizes young men." Lundy, who is now 92, recalls his inability to listen during lectures. “I was busy sketching,” he admits. During his time in the infantry, he continued to sketch in his pocket-sized notebooks. The drawings, which were created between May and November 1944—when Lundy was wounded—take us from his initial training in Fort Jackson to the front lines in France. The vivid images show everything from air raids to craps games for cigarettes. A sense of longing for home is a recurring theme in his sketches, which include detailed drawings of his bunk as well as particularly dream-like drawing, titled Home Sweet Home, that shows a soldier lounging on a hammock. Lundy, who went on to have an acclaimed architecture career, donated his eight sketchbooks to the Library of Congress in 2009. The sketchbooks have all been digitally archived and are now available for viewing online. Lundy’s gift is a precious one, as in this age of continued war and terror it is more important than ever to learn from our past history. Full Article

ww AppleVis Extra #98: Recapping Apple's WWDC 2024 Keynote By www.applevis.com Published On :: Wed, 12 Jun 2024 22:36:33 +0000 In the latest AppleVis Extra, hosts Dave Nason and Thomas Domville convene to share their insights on the highlights from Apple’s WWDC 2024 Keynote.transcription: Disclaimer: This transcript is generated by AIKO, an automated transcription service. It is not edited or formatted, and it may not accurately capture the speakers’ names, voices, or content. Hello there and welcome to AppleVis Extra number 98.My name is Dave Nason.Because it is June we are talking, of course, about WWDC and because it is AppleViz I am talking, of course, to Thomas Domville. How are you today, Tom?Hey, I'm pretty good.Boy, was that a show or what?It was.Nearly two hours that went on and, yeah, it was probably the most anticipated WWDC I can remember in a long time.Like everybody was waiting for this one, waiting for the announcement. So before we get into the nitty-gritty, did it meet those expectations for you?Definitely.I had a check box of all the things I wanted to hear and it definitely checked all the tick box that I wanted to see and hear.So I was very happy with the results. And I know there were some disappointments out there as well, but that's what we'll be talking about.Yeah, for sure. And it's funny, we've had a few of these announcements in recent months from all the companies, you know, Google had IO, Microsoft had events, OpenAI had an event, and they've all, you know, Google especially and so on.They've shorn the words AI or the letters AI into every sentence of the entire thing it seemed, whereas Apple, it was kind of, it must have been nearly an hour before they set the term, though I thought that was interesting. So we might take the same approach to them and we will kick off with the regular updates, you might call them, to iOS and Vision OS and Mac OS and so on.And then we can have a chat through the so-called AI.That sounds great.I think that'd be perfect. So they did kick off with Vision OS and I don't think we need to.Why not, man?You know, it is kind of odd that, you know, it's only been four months since they released it and they actually have a Vision OS 2 that comes out.I'm thinking, wow, this is kind of, not only that, but it really didn't feel like it was a 2.I mean, it was like one big thing and that was it.I was kind of really disappointed.I mean, yeah, granted that 3D photos sounds cool now, but definitely not for anything for us.No, no.And laserhertz, you know, Marcus Brownlee, you know, he said, it's more, felt like more of a 1.2 than a 2.Exactly.It was like a 1.2.It was like a 1.5 update. That was it.But I guess what they're doing there is they're getting it onto their summer cycle. That's all that really is.So next year, it'll be 3 and, you know, go from there, I guess. So it makes sense. But what it included was, yeah, you can turn any photo into a 3D experience or whatever the correct terminology is and some new gestures. But from an accessibility point of view, we're not aware of anything really. You know, it's still a product that is very limited in terms of availability and, you know, what it can… Full Article

In this episode, we speak with retired Army Colonel Edna Cummings, who made it her business to get the 6888 their belated recognition, and with Smithsonian magazine senior writer Jennie Rothenberg Gritz, who wrote about Col. Cummings' quest (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-all-black-female-WWII-unit-saved-morale-battlefield-180981540/) for the March 2023 issue of Smithsonian. ww Awwdorable Otter and Kitten Grow Up Together, and Now, They Cannot Sleep without One Another (Video) By cheezburger.com Published On :: Mon, 11 Nov 2024 07:00:00 -0800 We don't know if you have heard of it, but some people out there claim that cats are not friendly animals, and we think that they are ridiculous for it. They don't believe us when we tell them that cats love their humans. They say that the only reason cats show us any affection is because we feed them and take care of them, that if we didn't, our cats would be just as aloof to us as all these cat haters claim. We know better. We just can't seem to prove it to people. So, here we are, trying again, this time by showing them cats showing affection to other animals. Because if cats being friends with dogs was not enough, and cats being lifelong friends with birds, and kittens befriending pigs is not enough, then maybe a video of a cat and an otter being best friends since babyhood and cuddling every night to sleep will be enough to prove the cat haters wrong.
