Viewsonic VG2230vm

A few days ago I ordered a Viewsonic VG2230 22" widescreen LCD for about $300 from www.newegg.com It replaces an ancient 19" Viewsonic G790 CRT display. I also have a little 15" Gateway LCD as a secondary monitor. So far I'm loving this new monitor. I have a lot more room to do stuff, and games look awesome on it. It is plugged into a DVI port on my Radeon x1950 Pro. I briefly ran Quake 4 and Half Life 2. I ran F.E.A.R. Combat but it insisted on running on the secondary display. I hope I can resolve this later. I still need to try Bioshock on this thing. This monitor can swivel on its base, and it has a height adjustment that can go pretty high. It has some speakers I will never use. This monitor will improve the many, many hours I spend on my computer. Now I just need to upgrade my secondary monitor.

Dressing for Successful Job Interviews - Military Transition Tips

This is one of the articles on Military Transition Tips. Our article web site
can be very helpful for your job search and more. This is one of the articles
from our Military Transition web site.

Dressing for Successful Job Interviews

The first thing an interviewer will notice about you is how you're dressed.
Even before you say hello or shake their hand, they are starting to form an
impression of you based on your appearance. This week's job searching tip
deals with making sure you are dressed properly for interviews.

It's estimated that people gain meaning more from non-verbal cues in
conversations than from the actual words exchanged. Therefore, how you
present yourself in an interview will have a significant impact on how the
interviewer perceives you.

If you're applying for a job as a manager, the interviewer will be trying to
decide how you would be perceived by subordinates and other managers.
Basically, they're asking themselves, "would this person fit in?" One way to
figure out how best to dress to fit in would be to visit the company ahead
of time for some "surveillance" work.

If you hang around outside the company's parking lot, you could observe
how most people dress there. Of course it's best not to be conspicuous - if
the interviewer saw you hanging around their parking lot a few days earlier,
they might think you're strange!

There are some basic rules that everyone should follow when
going on a job interview:

- Your goal should be to look clean, healthy and successful.
- Make sure you don't have bad breath. Nobody wants to work with
someone who smells bad.
- On the other hand, don't overdo it with aftershave/perfume.
- Always err on the side of conservatism. Men should
wear conservative ties for interviews and women should opt for a more
conservative blouse.
- Your hair should be clean and neat.
- Your nails should be clean and a reasonable
length.
- Women should wear tan or light hosiery. If you know people who work
in a similar company (or the same company) in the same location, talk
to them about how people dress for work. Especially if you are moving
from another part of the country.

For example, lawyers in California often dress a bit more casually and
wear less conservative ties than lawyers in New York. Be sure to follow
rules of etiquette when on the interview itself. Give the interviewer a
chance to offer you a seat. If you're wearing a suit jacket, don't take it
off in the interview.

Remember, an interview is partly a formality. Especially if the
interviewer is a human resources person or other staff member who is
not very familiar with your field, you may be judged much more on
your appearance and how well you conform to the "picture" of what a
good interviewee should be like than on the content of what you say in
the interview.

A great movie about creating the right appearance is the recent Steven
Spielberg film, "Catch Me If You Can," which starred Leonardo Di Caprio.
In the movie, which is based on a true story, Di Caprio plays a con artist
and counterfeiter named Frank Abignale, Jr. Frank is able to work as an
airline pilot, a doctor and a lawyer all because he is able to come across
like he fits in. Even though he was only 16, he knew enough to do his
research ahead of time and create the right appearance.

One of the great lines in the movie is when Frank says to the detective
trying to catch him, "Why do you think the Yankees always win? Is it
because of Mickey Mantle? No, it's because everyone's busy watching
the pinstripes."

Belize Trip Reviews - March, April 2013

March 10, 2013.

Andy, Simone, David, Nora, Wanni, Lucas, Aidan, and the rest of the staff; What an amazing 4 days! Everything was so much fun, and the guides were so well-informed, it is hard to pick a favorite.
The first day we went to the Xunantunich Mayan site; quite interesting, with Junior as our guide;

Then on to the Iguana Park.

Next day was to Cave’s Branch tubing, as we floated through limestone cave, and then down a gentle river with Fernando.

The next day to Caracol Mayan ruins, Rio Frio Cave, and Rio on waterfalls and swimming area with Bruce.

Every day was new and exciting, and our room was always clean when we got back, besides an excellent breakfast and dinner every day. Your staff is what made it so special.

On day one at the airport we met David, and he drove us every day and become a good friend to us. He was great company and an amazing young man.

Best of luck to you all! Hope to see you again. This trip was for a 50th anniversary and Simone (as busy as she is) even remembered, and made us a card. What a group!

Dawn & Hilda Elden,
Shawney, Oklahoma, USA.

March 22, 2013.

Dear Jungle Dome team,

Many thanks for an amazing introduction to Belize over the past 5 days, from the pick-up at the airport and trip to the zoo, and throughout the action-packed few days, I’ve had a great time experiencing a variety of activities, including my first ever horse ride and the beautiful ATM caves.

At the end of each adventure, it has been wonderful to have that feeling of coming ‘home’ to the Jungle Dome, and being made to feel part of the family, with lovely home-cooked meals, a comfy, homely room, and great conversations.

Thanks for the tips and advice, I am sure I will use in San Pedro in the coming days. You have a lovely place, and I will definitely  recommend it to anyone coming out here.
Virgina,
Greenwich, London, UK

March 31, 2013.

Belize Jungle Dome is AWESOME! David, our caretaker, has been amazing! He is full of knowledge about the sights we’ve asked him about. He is so interesting to talk to.

The meals have been very convenient, especially since we were over Easter weekend, when most restaurants have been closed. The pool is a refreshing break when we get back from our tours.

Make sure you do the cave tubing/zip-lining. St. Herman’s cave and the Blue Hole is an interesting side trip. Tomorrow we head to Mountain Pine Ridge and the, sadly, we have to leave the Jungle Dome, and head to San Ignacio.

We’ll always remember our stay here, and how welcome David made us feel.  I plan on writing a fantastic TripAdvisor review!

P.S. Love the friendly dogs, who also made us feel at home!

April 20, 2013.

The Jungle Dome was awesome! We absolutely loved our stay here. The staff was great and the food was amazing. Our guide David was really nice, and Lucas was fun to be around too. Everyone here is so nice (including the dogs), we will definitely write a review about the Dome on TripAdvisor.

Thanks for everything,

April 13, 2013.

Dear Jungle Dome family,

This has been a home away from home…Simone, Andy, their kids, David, Marina, Tella, Wani, and all the crew, thanks to all of you for your hospitality, delicious food, cozy apartment, incredible spirit and beautiful energy.

I just leave my heart in Belize. I had, not only, a great time and amazing vacation, I also learned so much about the culture, history, and traditions.

God bless you!
Love and peace, Claudia

Unveiling learner experience in MOOC reviews

The surge of learner enrolment in massive open online courses (MOOCs) has led to a wealth of learner-generated data, such as online course reviews that document learner experience. To unveil learner experience with MOOCs, this research uses machine learning methods to extract prominent topics from MOOC reviews and assess the sentiments expressed by learners within them. Furthermore, this research investigates the cooccurrence of the topics using association rule mining. The findings reveal six central topics discussed in MOOC reviews, such as "instructor", "design", "material", "assignment", "platform", and "experience". Notably, most learners express positive sentiments in their reviews. The sentiment indicated in reviews of skill-seeking MOOCs is higher than that in reviews of knowledge-seeking MOOCs. Furthermore, the association rule mining identifies four meaningful association rules. The findings offer valuable insights for MOOC instructors to enhance course design and for platform operators to ensure the long-term viability and success of MOOC platforms.

Decoding YouTube Video Reviews: Uncovering The Factors That Determine Video Review Helpfulness

Aim/Purpose: This study aims to identify the characteristics of YouTube video reviews that consumers utilize to evaluate review helpfulness and explores how they process such information. This study aims to investigate the effect of argument quality, review popularity, number of likes, and source credibility on consumers’ perception of YouTube’s video review helpfulness. Background: Video reviews posted on YouTube are an emerging form of online reviews, which have the potential to be more helpful than textual reviews due to their visual and audible cues that deliver more vivid information about product features and specifications. With the availability of an enormous number of video reviews with unpredictable quality, it becomes challenging for consumers to find helpful reviews without consuming significant time and effort. In addition, YouTube does not provide a specific feature that indicates a review helpfulness similar to the one found on e-commerce websites. Consequently, consumers have to examine the characteristics of video reviews that are readily available on YouTube, evaluate them, and form a perception of whether a review is helpful or not. Despite the increasing popularity of YouTube’s video reviews, video reviews’ helpfulness received inadequate attention in the literature. The antecedents of the helpfulness of online video reviews are still underinvestigated, and more research is needed to identify the characteristics that consumers depend upon to assess video review helpfulness. Furthermore, it is important to understand how consumers process the information they gain from these characteristics to form a perception of their helpfulness. Methodology: Following an extended investigation of the relevant literature, we identified four key video characteristics that consumers presumably utilize to evaluate review helpfulness on YouTube (i.e., review popularity, number of likes, source credibility, and argument quality). By employing the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), we classified these characteristics along the central and peripheral routes. The central route characteristics require a high cognitive effort by consumers to process the review’s message and reach a logical decision. In contrast, the peripheral route assumes that consumers judge the review’s message based on superficial qualities without substantial cognitive effort. A research model is introduced to investigate the effect of central and peripheral cues and their corresponding video review characteristics on review helpfulness. Accordingly, argument quality is proposed in the central route of the model, while review popularity, number of likes, and source credibility are proposed in the peripheral route. Furthermore, the study investigates how consumers process the information they obtain from these routes jointly or independently. To empirically test the proposed model, a convenient sample of 361 YouTube users was obtained through an online survey. The partial least squares method was used to investigate the effect of the proposed characteristics on video review helpfulness. Contribution: This study contributes to the literature in several ways. First, it is one of the few studies that investigate online video reviews’ helpfulness. Second, this study identifies several unique characteristics of YouTube’s video reviews that span peripheral and central routes, which potentially contribute to review helpfulness. Third, this study proposes a conceptual model based on the ELM to explore the effect of central and peripheral cues and their corresponding review characteristics on review helpfulness. Fourth, the research findings provide implications for research and practice that advance the theoretical understanding of video reviews’ helpfulness and serve as guidelines to create more helpful video reviews by better understanding the consumer’s cognitive processes. Findings: The results show that among the four characteristics proposed in the research model, argument quality in the central route is the strongest determinant factor affecting video review helpfulness. Results also show that review popularity, source credibility, and the number of likes in the peripheral route have significant effects on video review helpfulness. Altogether, our results show that the effect of the peripheral route adds up to 0.463 compared to 0.430, which is the impact magnitude of the argument quality construct in the central route. Based on the comparable effect magnitude of the central and peripheral routes of the model on video review helpfulness, our results indicate that both peripheral and central cues significantly affect consumers’ perception of video review helpfulness. The two routes are not mutually exclusive, and their cues can be processed in parallel or consecutive ways. Recommendations for Practitioners: The study recommends creating a dedicated category for reviews on YouTube with a specific feature for consumers to indicate the helpfulness of a video review, similar to the helpful vote button in textual reviews. The study also recommends that reviewers deliver more appealing and convincing argument quality, work toward improving their credibility, and understand the factors that contribute to video popularity. Impact on Society: Identifying the characteristics that affect video review helpfulness on YouTube helps consumers access helpful reviews more efficiently and improves their purchase decisions. Future Research: Future research could look into different types of data that could be extracted from YouTube to investigate the helpfulness of online video reviews. Future studies could employ machine learning and sentiment analysis techniques to reach more insights. Future research could also investigate the effect of product types in the context of online video reviews.

Organizing Information Obtained From Literature Reviews – A Framework for Information System Area Researchers

Aim/Purpose: A literature review is often criticized for the absence of coherent construction, synthesis of topics, and well-reasoned analysis. A framework is needed for novice researchers to organize and present information obtained from the literature review. Background: Information and communication technologies advancement have yielded overwhelming information. The massive availability of information poses several challenges, including storage, processing, meaningful organization, and presentation for future consumption. Information System Researchers have developed frameworks, guidelines, and tools for gathering, filtering, processing, storing, and organizing information. Interestingly, information system researchers have vast information that needs meaningful organization and presentation to the research fraternity while conducting a literature review on a research topic. Methodology: This paper describes a framework called LACTiC (Location, Author, Continuum, Time, and Category) that we adapted from another framework called LATCH (Location, Alphabetical, Time, Category, and Hierarchy). LATCH was used to organize and present information on e-commerce websites for seamless navigation. We evaluated the LACTiC framework. Contribution: Information System Researchers can use the LACTiC framework to organize information obtained from literature review. Findings: The evaluation reveals that most researchers from information systems organize information obtained from the literature review category-wise, followed by continuum, author, time, and location. Recommendation for Researchers: Overall, the framework works well and can be helpful for researchers for an initial idea for organizing information obtained from the literature review. Future Research: To conceptualize the framework, the study was carried out using Information Systems related literature. To generalize the proposed framework, we may suggest that the study can be extended to other areas of business management, such as marketing, finance, operation, decision sciences, accounting, and economics.

DIFFERENT VIEWS OF HIERARCHY AND WHY THEY MATTER: HIERARCHY AS INEQUALITY OR AS CASCADING INFLUENCE

Hierarchy is a reality of group life, for humans as well as for most other group-living species. And yet, there remains considerable debate about whether and when hierarchy can promote group performance and member satisfaction. We suggest that progress in this debate has been hampered by a lack of clarity about hierarchy and how to conceptualize it. Whereas prevailing conceptualizations of hierarchy in the group and organization literature focus on inequality in member power or status (i.e., centralization or steepness), we build on the ethological and social network traditions to advance a view of hierarchy as cascading relations of dyadic influence (i.e., acyclicity). We further suggest that hierarchy thus conceptualized is more likely to capture the functional benefits of hierarchy whereas hierarchy as inequality is more likely to be dysfunctional. In a study of 75 teams drawn from a wide range of industries, we show that whereas acyclicity in influence relations reduces conflict and thereby enhances both group performance and member satisfaction, centralization and steepness have negative effects on conflict, performance, and satisfaction, particularly in groups that perform complex tasks. The theory and results of this study can help to clarify and advance research on the functions and dysfunctions of hierarchy in task groups.
