ada Filling The Labour Gaps The Key To A Thriving Tourism Industry In Canada By destinationsinternational.org Published On :: Wed, 30 Oct 2024 15:35:42 +0000 Filling The Labour Gaps The Key To A Thriving Tourism Industry In Canada jhammond@desti… Wed, 10/30/2024 - 15:35 Image Off At a time when Canadian youth, newcomers, and members of underrepresented communities face record levels of unemployment, our sector is presented with a unique opportunity. We have a chance to transform our workforce, improve the quality of life of every Canadian, and make a positive impact that goes beyond an economic contribution. We must promote the rewarding and long-term career paths the tourism sector provides to attract and retain the next generation of Canada’s talented workforce. Nik Mills 4 min read October 30, 2024 Tourism is, at its core, about people. It’s powered by the connections we make, the stories we share, and the experiences we create together. From the dedicated hospitality workers who welcome travellers with warmth, to the local artisans and guides who bring our culture to life, it’s the people behind the scenes who truly make tourism thrive. Every journey is enriched by the unique contributions of individuals who are passionate about showcasing their communities and welcoming visitors from around the world. Employment in the tourism sector remains lower than it was before the pandemic. According to the most recent annual data, employment levels for several advanced career positions in tourism and hospitality are dramatically lower than in 2019. Air traffic controllers are down 33 per cent, executive housekeepers and hospitality workers are down 31 per cent, and for conference and event planners, employment is down 19 per cent. At a time when Canadian youth, newcomers, and members of underrepresented communities face record levels of unemployment, our sector is presented with a unique opportunity. We have a chance to transform our workforce, improve the quality of life of every Canadian, and make a positive impact that goes beyond an economic contribution. We must promote the rewarding and long-term career paths the tourism sector provides to attract and retain the next generation of Canada’s talented workforce. As an industry, we must plug the gaps that hamper productivity and threaten to damage Canada’s reputation as a tourism destination. Strategic public investment is required to promote tourism as a vocation and enhance its labour force with talent. This is best achieved through meaningful partnerships—not only within our sector but with the federal government. These partnerships will be the cornerstone of our industry’s success. To this end, TIAC is working with Restaurants Canada, the Hotel Association of Canada, and Tourism HR Canada to call on the federal government to fund a national marketing campaign through a three-year, $5-million investment. This campaign promotes tourism as a career among young Canadians. It builds on the work that THRC has initiated with its Discover Tourism program, which provides valuable career planning, curriculum, and HR tools to job seekers, employers, and educators. The logic underpinning this program presupposes that today’s youth are unaware of the career possibilities the tourism industry presents and the satisfaction that comes from showcasing Canada to its visitors. Nascent workers, read about the Discover Tourism program and take advantage of the resources available to you. Careers in tourism are varied and fulfilling; your perusal of these programs could lead you to your dream job. While we build our future workforce, we must leverage existing industry supports and government programs such as THRC’s Ready to Work program, which helps businesses recruit job seekers and integrate newcomers into a career in tourism. Its internships—a composite of in-class education and workplace training—facilitate job-readiness and career planning. Over the years, it has provided under-represented communities with career options and growth opportunities in the tourism sector by providing them access to certification programs (e.g., WHMIS, CPR, responsible alcohol service) that will open up new pathways in their pursuit of employment. The Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot is an express-entry program that pairs employers with skilled newcomers, asylum seekers, and refugees to Canada. Such opportunities enable these individuals to flourish and ensure their new lives an auspicious start. It also makes available to employers qualified candidates whose background and education could provide unique skillsets and perspectives. Even without a firm job offer, talented refugees may nevertheless gain entry into Canada and begin their new life, with employment opportunities coming as they settle into the country. Tourism operators suffering from the labour gap are encouraged to take advantage of this program that is mutually beneficial for themselves and those skilled workers who hope to call Canada home. As global demand for tourism rises, Canada must remain a top-tier destination. To do so, the fundamental needs of the sector must be met for it to thrive in the years ahead. By investing in our people and forging strong and reliable partnerships, we can ensure that Canada’s tourism industry does not just survive, but truly flourishes. Together, we can build a future that benefits our economy, our communities, and everyone involved in this wonderful sector. ada OSCE confidence- and security-building measures must be adapted to current security challenges, says Polish Foreign Ministry Under-Secretary of State By feeds.osce.org Published On :: Wed, 13 Apr 2016 16:38:23 +0000 VIENNA, 13 April 2016 – As Poland takes over the rotating Chairmanship of the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation (FSC), Under-Secretary of State with the Foreign Ministry Marek Ziółkowski said that one of the main tasks of his country will be to strengthen confidence- and security-building measures by revitalizing the Vienna Document 2011. Moving this process forward and including regional perspectives into the security dialogue with the focus on some areas including the Baltic Sea region, Central and Eastern Europe are the priorities of Poland’s Chairmanship of the FSC. Opening the 815th meeting of the Forum for Security Co-operation Ziółkowski said: “Poland believes that risk reduction is one of the pillars of the Vienna Document-based co-operation. And nowadays the relevance and usefulness of risk reduction mechanisms are growing.” He noted in particular the proposal made jointly by Poland and other OSCE participating States to improve co-operation regarding hazardous incidents of a military nature. Poland’s Chairmanship will put an emphasis on regional perspectives in the security dialogue in the OSCE area. Political-military aspects of security in Georgia and Tajikistan as well as Montenegro’s Demilitarization Programme (MONDEM) will also be topics of discussion. Regarding the crisis in and around Ukraine, the Under-Secretary of State drew attention to the lack of progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements and further deterioration of the security situation in Donbas. “The OSCE must retain its focus and resolve to facilitate a peaceful and lasting resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. We see room for the FSC to play a more prominent role here. For example, the applicability of the existing set of confidence- and security-building measures could be re-examined and further explored,” Ziółkowski said. Poland is taking over the Chairmanship of the Forum for Security Co-operation from the Netherlands and preceding Portugal. Ambassador Adam Bugajski of Poland will chair the FSC till the end of the summer recess.Related StoriesOSCE confidence- and security-building measures must be adapted to current security challenges, says Polish Foreign Ministry Under-Secretary of StateDialogue for enhanced European security in focus at joint session of OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation and Permanent CouncilGreater international efforts needed to address challenges to stable security in Georgia, say participants of OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation Full Article Forum for Security Co-operation Arms control Press release

ada Tradecraft: Jamie Bell Joins Clancy Adaptation WITHOUT REMORSE By doubleosection.blogspot.com Published On :: Sat, 05 Oct 2019 05:15:00 +0000 It looks like this time, Paramount's decades-held hopes of making a movie out of Tom Clancy's epic saga Without Remorse are really going to happen! Last month, Variety reported that Jamie Bell will join the previously announced Michael B. Jordan (playing frequent Clancy hero John Clark) in the movie from director Stefano Sollima (helmer of the very Clancy-esque Sicario: Day of the Soldado). Bell will play a familiar character from the Tom Clancy universe, CIA Deputy Director of Operations Robert Ritter. Henry Czerny memorably essayed the role in 1994's Clear and Present Danger, in which Willem Dafoe played Clark. Today, several more actors joined the cast, making this Without Remorse more and more of a reality! (Forgive my incredulity. It's just hard to believe this movie is finally happening after literally decades of development!) Deadline reports that Luke Mitchell (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys For Life), Cam Gigandet (Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden), Jack Kesy (12 Strong), and Todd Lasance (Spartacus) are all signing on as members of Clark's SEAL team. Nearly all of them have played special forces operators before. Additionally, Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship, The Neon Demon) has been cast as a potential love interest for Jordan. According to the trade, "Without Remorse is the origin story of John Clark, played by Jordan, a Navy SEAL-turned-CIA ops officer, who seeks revenge after his girlfriend is killed by a Baltimore drug lord." That sounds more or less like the novel, so if this capsule summary comes from the studio (and not just a Deadline writer Wikipedia-ing the book), then perhaps we can expect a fairly faithful adaptation. What I'm guessing we won't get is a period piece. I doubt Clark will serve in Vietnam in this version; I suspect they'll make it contemporary. (This was the plan back when Tom Hardy was supposed to play Clark in a series intended to cross over with Chris Pine's intended Jack Ryan franchise.) Paramount are very eager to launch a new film franchise with this movie, already eyeing Clancy's Rainbow Six as a follow-up. Also unclear is whether there will be any crossover with Amazon's Jack Ryan TV series, which hails from the same producers. The Clark character has been kept out of that series so far because of the percolating film franchise, but that doesn't necessarily preclude a cameo from John Krasinski in Without Remorse.... Without Remorse is slated to open September 18, 2020. Full Article Books Jack Ryan Movies Tom Clancy
