Mother and child hair cortisol association suggests a heritable part or maternal calibration. Cortisol output gradually stabilizes, has a stable trait, and is positively correlated to birth weight. Little is known about the impact of tobacco smoke exposure on preterm children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. It is essential to understand how environmental exposures, such as tobacco smoke, influence respiratory morbidities in this vulnerable population.

Chronic tobacco smoke exposure is common in children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. In children who required home respiratory support, hair nicotine levels were a better predictor of hospitalization and activity limitation than caregiver self-report. (Read the full article)

Early psychosocial exposures are increasingly recognized as crucial to health throughout life. A possible mechanism is physiologic dysregulation due to stress. Cortisol in hair is a new biomarker assessing long-term hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity.

Added early psychosocial exposures seem to increase infant long-term hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity and risk of common childhood diseases in a cumulative manner, supporting the model of physiologic dysregulation as a plausible mechanism through which early detrimental exposures determine health outcomes. Morrison was unanimously elected to a second term as chair of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) at a PECC Standing Committee meeting in Bangkok on July 26. He is the first chair to have served a three-year term and the first American to chair PECC since 1993.   PECC also named Mr. Jusuf Wanandi of Indonesia as the Asia co-chair, beginning in 2009.  Mr. Wanandi has served on the EWC’s Board of Governors and has chaired its International Advisory Panel.

HONOLULU (July 11, 2008) – Members of the East-West Center’s Board of Governors have elected international development economist Puongpun Sananikone to serve as the board’s new chairman. At a meeting today, the board named Sananikone to succeed Roland Lagareta, who became the board’s vice-chairman.

In addition, the board reappointed member Il SaKong, a former South Korea minister of finance and currently a leading economic advisor to President Lee Myung-bak, to a third term on the board. SaKong’s new term will extend until October 2011.

BREAKING: Kano Discharges Health Commissioner, Prevention Task Force Co-chairman, 14 Other COVID-19 Patients

Sixteen patients receiving treatment for Coronavirus in Kano State have been discharged after recovering from the disease.

This brings the total number of discharged patients in the state to 22.

Mallam Muhammad Garba, Commissioner for Information in the state, made this known in a statement on Thursday. 

Garba said among those discharged were Prof Abdulrazak Garba Habeeb of the Department of Medicine, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Bayero University, who is also the Co-chair of the state’s Prevention Task Force on COVID-19, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, the state’s Commissioner for Health among others.

The commissioner pointed out that all the patients have tested negative for the disease after the two follow up tests and have therefore reached full recovery.
