Device for source position stabilization and beam parameter monitoring at inverse Compton X-ray sources

Compact X-ray sources based on inverse Compton scattering provide brilliant and partially coherent X-rays in a laboratory environment. The cross section for inverse Compton scattering is very small, requiring high-power laser systems as well as small laser and electron beam sizes at the interaction point to generate sufficient flux. Therefore, these systems are very sensitive to distortions which change the overlap between the two beams. In order to monitor X-ray source position, size and flux in parallel to experiments, the beam-position monitor proposed here comprises a small knife edge whose image is acquired with an X-ray camera specifically designed to intercept only a very small fraction of the X-ray beam. Based on the source position drift recorded with the monitor, a closed-loop feedback stabilizes the X-ray source position by adjusting the laser beam trajectory. A decrease of long-term source position drifts by more than one order of magnitude is demonstrated with this device. Consequently, such a closed-loop feedback system which enables stabilization of source position drifts and flux of inverse Compton sources in parallel to experiments has a significant impact on the performance of these sources.

Microsecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction for the investigation of fatigue behavior during ultrasonic fatigue loading

A new method based on time-resolved X-ray diffraction is proposed in order to measure the elastic strain and stress during ultrasonic fatigue loading experiments. Pure Cu was chosen as an example material for the experiments using a 20 kHz ultrasonic fatigue machine mounted on the six-circle diffractometer available at the DiffAbs beamline on the SOLEIL synchrotron facility in France. A two-dimensional hybrid pixel X-ray detector (XPAD3.2) was triggered by the strain gage signal in a synchronous data acquisition scheme (pump–probe-like). The method enables studying loading cycles with a period of 50 µs, achieving a temporal resolution of 1 µs. This allows a precise reconstruction of the diffraction patterns during the loading cycles. From the diffraction patterns, the position of the peaks, their shifts and their respective broadening can be deduced. The diffraction peak shift allows the elastic lattice strain to be estimated with a resolution of ∼10−5. Stress is calculated by the self-consistent scale-transition model through which the elastic response of the material is estimated. The amplitudes of the cyclic stresses range from 40 to 120 MPa and vary linearly with respect to the displacement applied by the ultrasonic machine. Moreover, the experimental results highlight an increase of the diffraction peak broadening with the number of applied cycles.

Generating three-color pulses in high-gain harmonic-generation free-electron lasers with a tilted electron bunch

A multi-color light source is a significant tool for nonlinear optics experiments, pump–dump/repump–probe experiments and in other fields. Here, a novel method is proposed to create three-color pulses based on a high-gain harmonic-generation (HGHG) free-electron laser with a tilted electron bunch. In this method, the initial bunch tilt is created by transverse wakefields after the bunch passes through a corrugated structure with an off-axis orbit, and is further enlarged in a following drift section. Then the tilted bunch experiences the off-axis field of a quadrupole magnet to cool down the large transverse velocity induced before. After that, it enters an HGHG configuration adopting a transverse gradient undulator (TGU) as the radiator, where only three separated fractions of the tilted bunch will resonate at three adjacent harmonics of the seed wavelength and are enabled to emit three-color pulses simultaneously. In addition, the use of the natural transverse gradient of a normal planar undulator instead of the TGU radiator to emit three-color pulses is also studied in detail. Numerical simulations including the generation of the tilted bunch and the free-electron laser radiation confirm the validity and feasibility of this scheme both for the TGU radiator and the natural gradient in the extreme-ultraviolet waveband.

The title salt, C24H27N2OS+·BF4−, was prepared by an alkylation at the amino N atom attached to the sulfur atom of the corresponding sulfodiimide. The configuration around the sulfur atom is a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry with two S—N bonds and two S—C bonds. The lengths of the S—N(diethylamine) and S=N(m-methylbenzoylimine) bonds are 1.619 (2) and 1.551 (2) Å, respectively. The two N—S—N—C(ethyl) and the N—S—N—C(m-methylbenzoylimine) torsion angles are −85.43 (3), 58.94 (17) and 62.03 (16)°, respectively. The dihedral angle between the two phenyl rings is 84.03 (14)°. In the crystal, C—H⋯F hydrogen bonds link the cation and anion, forming a three-dimensional network.

Redetermination of diammonium trivanadate, (NH4)2V3O8

The crystal structure of (NH4)2V3O8 has been reported twice using single-crystal X-ray data [Theobald et al. (1984). J. Phys. Chem. Solids, 45, 581–587; Range et al. (1988). Z. Naturforsch. Teil B, 43, 309–317]. In both cases, the orientation of the ammonium cation in the asymmetric unit was poorly defined: in Theobald's study, the shape and dimensions were constrained for NH4+, while in Range's study, H atoms were not included. In the present study, we collected a highly redundant data set for this ternary oxide, at 0.61 Å resolution, using Ag Kα radiation. These accurate data reveal that the NH4+ cation is disordered by rotation around a non-crystallographic axis. The rotation axis coincides with one N—H bond lying in the mirror m symmetry element of space-group type P4bm, and the remaining H sites were modelled over two disordered positions, with equal occupancy. It therefore follows that the NH4+ cations filling the space available in the (001) layered structure formed by (V3O8)2– ions do not form strong N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds with the mixed-valent oxidovanadate(IV,V) anions. This feature could have consequences for the Li-ion intercalation properties of this material, which is used as a cathode for supercapacitors.

Crystal structure of zymonic acid and a redetermination of its precursor, pyruvic acid

The structure of zymonic acid (systematic name: 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-5-oxo-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid), C6H6O5, which had previously eluded crystallographic determination, is presented here for the first time. It forms by intramolecular condensation of parapyruvic acid, which is the product of aldol condensation of pyruvic acid. A redetermination of the crystal structure of pyruvic acid (systematic name: 2-oxopropanoic acid), C3H4O3, at low temperature (90 K) and with increased precision, is also presented [for the previous structure, see: Harata et al. (1977). Acta Cryst. B33, 210–212]. In zymonic acid, the hydroxylactone ring is close to planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.0108 Å) and the dihedral angle between the ring and the plane formed by the bonds of the methyl and carboxylic acid carbon atoms to the ring is 88.68 (7)°. The torsion angle of the carboxylic acid group relative to the ring is 12.04 (16)°. The pyruvic acid molecule is almost planar, having a dihedral angle between the carboxylic acid and methyl-ketone groups of 3.95 (6)°. Intermolecular interactions in both crystal structures are dominated by hydrogen bonding. The common R22(8) hydrogen-bonding motif links carboxylic acid groups on adjacent molecules in both structures. In zymonic acid, this results in dimers about a crystallographic twofold of space group C2/c, which forces the carboxylic acid group to be disordered exactly 50:50, which scrambles the carbonyl and hydroxyl groups and gives an apparent equalization of the C—O bond lengths [1.2568 (16) and 1.2602 (16) Å]. The other hydrogen bonds in zymonic acid (O—H⋯O and weak C—H⋯O), link molecules across a 21-screw axis, and generate an R22(9) motif. These hydrogen-bonding interactions propagate to form extended pleated sheets in the ab plane. Stacking of these zigzag sheets along c involves only van der Waals contacts. In pyruvic acid, inversion-related molecules are linked into R22(8) dimers, with van der Waals interactions between dimers as the only other intermolecular contacts.

The title compound, C4H12N+·C11H5N4−, contains one tetramethylammonium cation and one 1,1,7,7-tetracyanohepta-2,4,6-trienide anion in the asymmetric unit. The anion is in an all-trans conjugated C=C bonds conformation. Two terminal C(CN)2 dinitrile moieties are slightly twisted from the polymethine main chain to which they are attached [C(CN)2/C5 dihedral angles = 6.1 (2) and 7.1 (1)°]. The crystal structure of the zwitterionic co-crystal of 2,4-dichloro-6-{[(3-hydroxypropyl)azaniumyl]methyl}phenolate and 2,4-dichlorophenol

The title compound, C10H13Cl2NO2·C6H4Cl2O, was formed from the incomplete Mannich condensation reaction of 3-aminopropan-1-ol, formaldehyde and 2,4-dichlorophenol in methanol. This resulted in the formation of a co-crystal of the zwitterionic Mannich base, 2,4-dichloro-6-{[(3-hydroxypropyl)azaniumyl]methyl}phenolate and the unreacted 2,4-dichlorophenol. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (in space group Cc) and the asymmetric unit contains a molecule each of the 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4-dichloro-6-{[(3-hydroxypropyl)azaniumyl]methyl}phenolate. Examination of the crystal structure shows that the two components are clearly linked together by hydrogen bonds. The packing patterns are most interesting along the b and the c axes, where the co-crystal in the unit cell packs in a manner that shows alternating aromatic dichlorophenol fragments and polar hydrogen-bonded channels. The 2,4-dichlorophenol rings stack on top of one another, and these are held together by π–π interactions. The crystal studied was refined as an inversion twin.

Tetra-n-butylammonium orotate monohydrate: knowledge-based comparison of the results of accurate and lower-resolution analyses and a non-routine disorder refinement

The hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions of the structure are joined by weaker non-classical C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. An accurate structure analysis conducted at T = 100 K is compared to a lower-resolution less accurate determination using data measured at T = 295 K. The results of both analyses are evaluated using a knowledge-based approach, and it is found that the less accurate room-temperature structure analysis provides geometric data that are similar to those derived from the accurate low-temperature analysis, with both sets of results consistent with previously analyzed structures. A minor disorder of one methyl group in the cation at low temperature was found to be slightly more complex at room temperature; while still involving a minor fraction of the structure, the disorder at room temperature was found to require a non-routine treatment, which is described in detail.

The crystal structure of 1 displays typical Zr—CH3 and Zr—O distances but the Si—O distance [1.628 (2) Å] and O—Si—O angle [110.86 (15)°] are among the largest observed in this family of compounds suggesting steric crowding between the t-Bu substituents of the silicon atom and the cyclopentadienyl groups. The silicon atom lies on a crystallographic twofold axis and both Cp rings are disordered over two orientations of equal occupancy.

Structure refinement of (NH4)3Al2(PO4)3 prepared by ionothermal synthesis in phosphonium based ionic liquids – a redetermination

After crystallization during ionothermal syntheses in phosphonium-containing ionic liquids, the structure of (NH4)3Al2(PO4)3 [triammonium dialuminum tris(phosphate)] was refined on the basis of powder X-ray diffraction data from a synchrotron source. (NH4)3Al2(PO4)3 is a member of the structural family with formula A3Al2(PO4)3, where A is a group 1 element, and of which the NH4, K, and Rb forms were previously known. The NH4 form is isostructural with the K form, and was previously solved from single-crystal X-ray data when the material (SIZ-2) crystallized from a choline-containing eutectic mixture [Cooper et al. (2004). Nature, 430, 1012–1017]. Our independent refinement incorporates NH4 groups and shows that these NH4 groups are hydrogen bonded to framework O atoms present in rings containing 12 T sites in a channel along the c-axis direction. We describe structural details of (NH4)3Al2(PO4)3 and discuss differences with respect to isostructural forms.

Crystal structure of the coordination polymer catena-poly[[[(acetonitrile-κN)copper(I)]-μ3-1,3-dithiolane-κ3S:S:S'] hexafluoridophosphate]

The polymeric title compound, [Cu2(C2H3N)2(C3H6S2)2](PF6)2, represents an example of a one-dimensional coordination polymer resulting from the reaction of [Cu(MeCN)4][PF6] with 1,3-dithiolane. The cationic one-dimensional ribbon consists of two copper(I) centers each ligated by one acetonitrile molecule and interconnected through two bridging 1,3-dithiolane ligands. One S-donor site of each ligand is κ1-bound to Cu, whereas the second S atom acts as a four-electron donor, bridging two Cu atoms in a κ4-bonding mode. The positive charge of each copper cation is compensated for by a hexafluoridophosphate counter-ion. In the crystal, the polymer chains are linked by a series of C—H⋯F hydrogen bonds, forming a supramolecular framework. The crystal studied was refined as a two-component twin.

Poly[[tetradecakis(μ-propionato)heptabarium] propionic acid monosolvate tetrahydrate]

The title compound, {[Ba7(C3H5O2)14]·0.946C3H6O2·4H2O}n, is represented by a metal–organic framework structure that is held together by Ba—O—Ba bonds, as well as by O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds of moderate strength. The structure comprises of four independent Ba2+ cations (one of which is situated on a twofold rotation axis), seven independent propionate and two independent water molecules. The bond-valence sums of all the cations indicate a slight overbonding. There is also an occupationally, as well as a positionally disordered propionic acid molecule present in the structure. Its occupation is slightly lower than the full occupation while the disordered molecules occupy two positions related by a rotation about a twofold rotation axis. In addition, the methyl group in the symmetry-independent propionic acid molecule is also disordered, and occupies two positions. Each propionic acid molecule coordinates to just one cation from a pair of symmetry-equivalent Ba2+ sites and is simultaneously bonded by an O—H⋯Opropionate hydrogen bond. This means that on a microscopic scale, the coordination number of the corresponding Ba2+ site is either 9 or 10. The methyl as well as hydroxy hydrogen atoms of the disordered propionic acid molecule were not determined.

Crystal structure of 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazoniacyclotetradecane bis(perchlorate) dichloride from synchrotron X-ray data

The crystal structure of title salt, C14H36N44+·2ClO4−·2Cl−, has been determined using synchrotron radiation at 220 K. The structure determination reveals that protonation has occurred at all four amine N atoms. The asymmetric unit contains one half-cation (completed by crystallographic inversion symmetry), one perchlorate anion and one chloride anion. A distortion of the perchlorate anion is due to its involvement in hydrogen-bonding interactions with the cations. The crystal structure is consolidated by intermolecular hydrogen bonds involving the 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazoniacyclotetradecane N—H and C—H groups as donor groups, and the O atoms of the perchlorate and chloride anion as acceptor groups, giving rise to a three-dimensional network.

A binuclear CuII/CaII thiocyanate complex with a Schiff base ligand derived from o-vanillin and ammonia

The new heterometallic complex, aqua-1κO-bis(μ2-2-iminomethyl-6-methoxyphenolato-1κ2O1,O6:2κ2O1,N)bis(thiocyanato-1κN)calcium(II)copper(II), [CaCu(C8H8NO2)2(NCS)2(H2O)], has been synthesized using a one-pot reaction of copper powder, calcium oxide, o-vanillin and ammonium thiocyanate in methanol under ambient conditions. The Schiff base ligand (C8H9NO2) is generated in situ from the condensation of o-vanillin and ammonia, which is released from the initial NH4SCN. The title compound consists of a discrete binuclear molecule with a {Cu(μ-O)2Ca} core, in which the Cu⋯Ca distance is 3.4275 (6) Å. The coordination geometries of the four-coordinate copper atom in the [CuN2O2] chromophore and the seven-coordinate calcium atom in the [CaO5N2] chromophore can be described as distorted square planar and pentagonal bipyramidal, respectively. In the crystal, O—H⋯S hydrogen bonds between the coordinating water molecules and thiocyanate groups form a supramolecular chain with a zigzag-shaped calcium skeleton.

Crystal structure of 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazoniacyclotetradecane bis[chloridochromate(VI)] dichloride from synchrotron X-ray data

The crystal structure of title compound, (C14H36N4)[CrO3Cl]2Cl2, has been determined by synchrotron radiation X-ray crystallography at 220 K. The macrocyclic cation lies across a crystallographic inversion center and hence the asymmetric unit contains one half of the organic cation, one chlorochromate anion and one chloride anion. Both the Cl− anion and chlorochromate Cl atom are involved in hydrogen bonding. In the crystal, hydrogen bonds involving the 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazoniacyclotetradecane (TMC) N—H groups and C—H groups as donor groups and three O atoms of the chlorochromate and the chloride anion as acceptor groups link the components, giving rise to a three-dimensional network.

Synthesis and crystal structure of a 6-chloronicotinate salt of a one-dimensional cationic nickel(II) coordination polymer with 4,4'-bipyridine

A 6-chloronicotinate (6-Clnic) salt of a one-dimensional cationic nickel(II) coordination polymer with 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy), namely, catena-poly[[[tetraaquanickel(II)]-μ-4,4'-bipyridine-κ2N:N'] bis(6-chloronicotinate) tetrahydrate], {[Ni(C10H8N2)(H2O)4](C6H3ClNO2)2·4H2O}n or {[Ni(4,4'-bpy)(H2O)4](6-Clnic)2·4H2O}n, (1), was prepared by the reaction of nickel(II) sulfate heptahydrate, 6-chloronicotinic acid and 4,4'-bipyridine in a mixture of water and ethanol. The molecular structure of 1 comprises a one-dimensional polymeric {[Ni(4,4'-bpy)(H2O)4]2+}n cation, two 6-chloronicotinate anions and four water molecules of crystallization per repeating polymeric unit. The nickel(II) ion in the polymeric cation is octahedrally coordinated by four water molecule O atoms and by two 4,4'-bipyridine N atoms in the trans position. The 4,4'-bipyridine ligands act as bridges and, thus, connect the symmetry-related nickel(II) ions into an infinite one-dimensional polymeric chain extending along the b-axis direction. In the extended structure of 1, the polymeric chains of {[Ni(4,4'-bpy)(H2O)4]2+}n, the 6-chloronicotinate anions and the water molecules of crystallization are assembled into an infinite three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network via strong O—H⋯O and O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds, leading to the formation of the representative hydrogen-bonded ring motifs: tetrameric R24(8) and R44(10) loops, a dimeric R22(8) loop and a pentameric R45(16) loop.

The crystals of compound 1 contain neutral and anionic Bmphfp molecules, and form a one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded chain motif. The crystals of compound 2 contain anionic Bmphfp molecules, which form a complex three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network with the ethylenediamine and water molecules.
