Synthesis, crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of N-(6-acetyl-1-nitro­naphthalen-2-yl)acetamide

The title compound, C14H12N2O4, was obtained from 2-acetyl-6-amino­naphthalene through two-step reactions of acetyl­ation and nitration. The mol­ecule comprises the naphthalene ring system consisting of functional systems bearing a acetyl group (C-2), a nitro group (C-5), and an acetyl­amino group (C-6). In the crystal, the mol­ecules are assembled into two-dimensional sheet-like structures by inter­molecular N—H⋯O and C—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter­actions. Hirshfeld surface analysis illustrates that the most important contributions to the crystal packing are from O⋯H/H⋯O (43.7%), H⋯H (31.0%), and C⋯H/H⋯C (8.5%) contacts.

Crystal structures of ten phosphane chalcogenide complexes of gold(III) chloride and bromide

The structures of ten phosphane chalcogenide complexes of gold(III) halides, with general formula R13–nR2nPEAuX3 (R1 = t-butyl; R2 = i-propyl; n = 0 to 3; E = S or Se; X = Cl or Br) are presented. The eight possible chlorido derivatives are: 9a, n = 3, E = S; 10a, n = 2, E = S; 11a, n = 1, E = S; 12a, n = 0, E = S; 13a, n = 3, E = Se; 14a, n = 2, E = Se; 15a, n = 1, E = Se; and 16a, n = 0, E = Se, and the corresponding bromido derivatives are 9b–16b in the same order. Structures were obtained for 9a, 10a (and a second polymorph 10aa), 11a (and its deutero­chloro­form monosolvate 11aa), 12a (as its di­chloro­methane monosolvate), 14a, 15a (as its deutero­chloro­form monosolvate 15aa, in which the solvent mol­ecule is disordered over two positions), 9b, 11b, 13b and 15b. The structures of 11a, 15a, 11b and 15b form an isotypic set, and those of compounds 10aa and 14a form an isotypic pair. All structures have Z' = 1. The gold(III) centres show square-planar coordination geometry and the chalcogenide atoms show approximately tetra­hedral angles (except for the very wide angle in 12a, probably associated with the bulky t-butyl groups). The bond lengths at the gold atoms are lengthened with respect to the known gold(I) derivatives, and demonstrate a considerable trans influence of S and Se donor atoms on a trans Au—Cl bond. Each compound with an isopropyl group shows a short intra­molecular contact of the type C—Hmethine⋯Xcis; these may be regarded as intra­molecular ‘weak’ hydrogen bonds, and they determine the orientation of the AuX3 groups. The mol­ecular packing is analysed in terms of various short contacts such as weak hydrogen bonds C—H⋯X and contacts between the heavier atoms, such as X⋯X (9a, 10aa, 11aa, 15aa and 9b), S⋯S (10aa, 11a and 12a) and S⋯Cl (10a). The packing of the polymorphs 10a and 10aa is thus quite different. The solvent mol­ecules take part in C—H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds; for 15aa, a disordered solvent region at z ≃ 0 is observed. Structure 13b involves unusual inversion-symmetric dimers with Se⋯Au and Se⋯Br contacts, further connected by Br⋯Br contacts.

Crystal structures of fourteen halochalcogenylphos­pho­nium tetra­halogenidoaurates(III)

The structures of fourteen halochalcogenyl­phospho­nium tetra­halogen­ido­aurates(III), phosphane chalcogenide derivatives with general formula [R13–nR2nPEX][AuX4] (R1 = t-butyl; R2 = isopropyl; n = 0 to 3; E = S or Se; X = Cl or Br) are presented. The eight possible chlorido derivatives are: 17a, n = 3, E = S; 18a, n = 2, E = S; 19a, n = 1, E = S; 20a, n = 0, E = S; 21a, n = 3, E = Se; 22a, n = 2, E = Se; 23a, n = 1, E = Se; and 24a, n = 0, E = Se, and the corresponding bromido derivatives are 17b–24b in the same order. Structures were obtained for all compounds except for the tri-t-butyl derivatives 24a and 24b. Isotypy is observed for 18a/18b/22a/22b, 19a/23a, 17b/21b and 19b/23b. In eleven of the compounds, X⋯X contacts (mostly very short) are observed between the cation and anion, whereby the E—X⋯X groups are approximately linear and the X⋯X—Au angles approximately 90°. The exceptions are 17a, 19a and 23a, which instead display short E⋯X contacts. Bond lengths in the cations correspond to single bonds P—E and E—X. For each group with constant E and X, the P—E—X bond-angle values increase monotonically with the steric bulk of the alkyl groups. The packing is analysed in terms of E⋯X, X⋯X (some between anions alone), H⋯X and H⋯Au contacts. Even for isotypic compounds, some significant differences can be discerned.

Crystal structure characterization, Hirshfeld surface analysis, and DFT calculation studies of 1-(6-amino-5-nitro­naphthalen-2-yl)ethanone

The title compound, C12H10N2O3, was obtained by the de­acetyl­ation reaction of 1-(6-amino-5-nitro­naphthalen-2-yl)ethanone in a concentrated sulfuric acid methanol solution. The mol­ecule comprises a naphthalene ring system bearing an acetyl group (C-3), an amino group (C-7), and a nitro group (C-8). In the crystal, the mol­ecules are assembled into a two-dimensional network by N⋯H/H⋯N and O⋯H/H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter­actions. n–π and π–π stacking inter­actions are the dominant inter­actions in the three-dimensional crystal packing. Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates that the most important contributions are from O⋯H/H⋯O (34.9%), H⋯H (33.7%), and C⋯H/H⋯C (11.0%) contacts. The energies of the frontier mol­ecular orbitals were computed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP-D3BJ/def2-TZVP level of theory and the LUMO–HOMO energy gap of the mol­ecule is 3.765 eV.

Crystal structure of hexa­chloro­thallate within a caesium chloride–phospho­tungstate lattice Cs9(TlCl6)(PW12O40)2·9CsCl

Crystal formation of caesium thallium chloride phospho­tungstates, Cs9(TlCl6)(PW12O40)2·9CsCl showcases the ability to capture and crystallize octa­hedral complexes via the use of polyoxometalates (POMs). The large number of caesium chlorides allows for the POM [α-PW12O40]3− to arrange itself in a cubic close-packing lattice extended framework, in which the voids created enable the capture of the [TlCl6]3− complex.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of a halogen bond between 2-(allyl­thio)­pyridine and 1,2,4,5-tetra­fluoro-3,6-di­iodo­benzene

The crystal structure of the title 2:1 mol­ecular complex between 2-(allyl­thio)­pyridine and 1,2,4,5-tetra­fluoro-3,6-di­iodo­benzene, C6F4I2·2C8H9NS, at 100 K has been determined in the monoclinic space group P21/c. The most noteworthy characteristic of the complex is the halogen bond between iodine and the pyridine ring with a short N⋯I contact [2.8628 (12) Å]. The Hirshfeld surface analysis shows that the hydrogen⋯hydrogen contacts dominate the crystal packing with a contribution of 32.1%.

Synthesis, non-spherical structure refinement and Hirshfeld surface analysis of racemic 2,2'-diisobut­oxy-1,1'-bi­naphthalene

In the racemic title compound, C28H30O2, the naphthyl ring systems subtend a dihedral angle of 68.59 (1)° and the mol­ecular conformation is consolidated by a pair of intra­molecular C—H⋯π contacts. The crystal packing features a weak C—H⋯π contact and van der Waals forces. A Hirshfeld surface analysis of the crystal structure reveals that the most significant contributions are from H⋯H (73.2%) and C⋯H/H⋯C (21.2%) contacts.

Mercury(II) halide complex of cis-[(tBuNH)(Se)P(μ-NtBu)2P(Se)(NHtBu)]

The mercury(II) halide complex [1,3-di-tert-butyl-2,4-bis­(tert-butyl­amino)-1,3,2λ5,4λ5-di­aza­diphosphetidine-2,4-diselone-κ2Se,Se']di­iodido­mercury(II) N,N-di­methyl­formamide monosolvate, [HgI2(C16H38N4P2Se2)]·C3H7NO or (1)HgI2, 2, containing cis-[(tBuNH)(Se)P(μ-NtBu)2P(Se)(NHtBu)] (1) was synthesized and structurally characterized. The crystal structure of 2 confirms the chelation of chalcogen donors to HgI2 with a natural bite angle of 112.95 (2)°. The coordination geometry around mercury is distorted tetra­hedral as indicated by the τ4 geometry index parameter (τ4 = 0.90). In the mercury complex, the exocyclic tert-butyl­amido substituents are arranged in an (endo, endo) fashion, whereas in the free ligand (1), the exocyclic substituents are arranged in an (exo, endo) pattern. Compound 2 displays non-classical N—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter­actions with the solvent N,N-di­methyl­formamide. These inter­actions may introduce geometrical distortion and deviation from an ideal geometry. An isostructural HgBr2 analogue containing cis-[(tBuNH)(S)P(μ-NtBu)2P(S)(NHtBu)] was also synthesized and structurally characterized, CIF data for the compound being presented as supporting information.

Crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis, and DFT and mol­ecular docking studies of 6-cyanona­phthalen-2-yl 4-(benz­yloxy)benzoate

In the title compound, C25H17NO3, the torsion angle associated with the phenyl benzoate group is −173.7 (2)° and that for the benz­yloxy group is −174.8 (2)° establishing an anti-type conformation. The dihedral angles between the ten-membered cyanona­phthalene ring and the aromatic ring of the phenyl benzoate and the benz­yloxy fragments are 40.70 (10) and 87.51 (11)°, respectively, whereas the dihedral angle between the aromatic phenyl benzoate and the benz­yloxy fragments is 72.30 (13)°. In the crystal, the mol­ecules are linked by weak C—H⋯O inter­actions forming S(4) chains propagating parallel to [010]. The packing is consolidated by three C—H⋯π inter­actions and two π–π stacking inter­actions between the aromatic rings of naphthalene and phenyl benzoate with centroid-to-centroid distances of 3.9698 (15) and 3.8568 (15) Å, respectively. Inter­molecular inter­actions were qu­anti­fied using Hirshfeld surface analysis. The mol­ecular structure was further optimized by density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6–311+ G(d,p) level, revealing that the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO is 3.17 eV. Mol­ecular docking studies were carried out for the title compound as a ligand and SARS-Covid-2(PDB ID:7QF0) protein as a receptor giving a binding affinity of −9.5 kcal mol−1.

X-ray diffraction from dislocation half-loops in epitaxial films

X-ray diffraction from dislocation half-loops consisting of a misfit segment with two threading arms extending from it to the surface is calculated by the Monte Carlo method. The diffraction profiles and reciprocal space maps are controlled by the ratio of the total lengths of the misfit and the threading segments of the half-loops. A continuous transformation from the diffraction characteristic of misfit dislocations to that of threading dislocations with increasing thickness of epitaxial film is studied. Diffraction from dislocations with edge- and screw-type threading arms is considered and the contributions of the two types of dislocations are compared.

'I'm Not A Cover Girl': Halima Aden On Why She Decided To Leave A Modeling Career

For Halima Aden, the decision to walk away from a career as the world's first hijab-wearing supermodel was fairly clear cut. She's felt used for so long, she says — by the modeling industry and by UNICEF, the organization she was photographed by as a child in a refugee camp in Kenya and later served as an ambassador for.

Aden has been featured on the covers of Vogue, Elle and Allure magazines. And she walked the runway for Rihanna's Fenty Beauty and Kanye West's Yeezy.

She tells Morning Edition host Rachel Martin she wanted to be a role model for young girls while being true to herself, but she wasn't accomplishing either. Modeling, she realized, was in "direct conflict" with who she is.

"I'm not a cover girl, I'm Halima from Kakuma," she says. "I want to be the reason why girls have confidence within themselves, not the reason for their insecurity."

Aden was raised in the Kakuma refugee camp in northwestern Kenya. She and her family moved to Minnesota in 2004 when she was 7.

It was there her journey as a model began, competing for Miss Minnesota USA in 2016, seeking a scholarship. She finished in the semifinals, and says from there, modeling "fell from the sky" into her lap.


Interview Highlights

You saw [modeling] not just as a chance to wear gorgeous clothes and to have your photo in magazines but also as a way to help people.

Growing up in America, not seeing representation, not seeing anybody who dressed like me look like me, it did make me feel like, wow, what's wrong with me, you know? And I'm sure if I had if I would have had representation growing up, I would have been so much more confident to wear my hijab, to be myself, to be authentic. But to be that person, to grow up and be on the cover of magazines, I've covered everything from Vogue to Allure, some of the biggest publications in fashion. And yet I still couldn't relate personally to my own image because that's not who I really am. That's not how I really dress. That's not how my hijab really looks. And, you know, fashion, it can be a very creative field, and I completely appreciate that. But my hijab was just getting spread so thin that I knew I had to give it all away, give it up. I'm not a cover girl. I am Halima from Kakuma. I want to be the reason why girls have confidence within themselves, not the reason for their insecurity.

When you say your hijab was being kind of styled out of existence, what passed for a hijab as you were walking down those runways?

Everything. Oh, my goodness. I had jeans at one point on my head as a hijab. I had Gucci pants styled as a turban. It just didn't even make sense, and I felt so far removed from the image itself.

During the pandemic you decided to walk away from fashion and UNICEF. Was it a complicated decision?

I'll be honest with you, the feelings that I've had towards the fashion industry and UNICEF, it was just multiplying as the years went on, so it was just festering. You know, because the fashion industry is very known to use these young girls and boys while their young, age 14 to like 24, I think is the average career of a model. And then they just replace them and move on to a newer model. And same with UNICEF. They've been photographing me and using me since the time I was a baby in a refugee camp. I remember getting those headshots taken and it made me feel, it's very dehumanizing. And so I wanted to show UNICEF, too. How does it feel to be used? It's not a good feeling. And so let's stop using people.

What are you going to do [next]?

For me right now, I don't know what's next. And that's OK. That's OK, because I'm young and I have time to figure it out. And I'm grateful. I'm grateful to the people that I've met. I'm grateful to the agents that I worked with. I'm grateful for the experiences I was able to have these last four years. But at the same time, I just am also grateful that I don't have to do that anymore because it was in direct conflict with who I am as an individual, as a human being.

Poetry Challenge: Create A List Poem That Grapples With Rise Of Anti-Asian Racism

Over the years, NPR's poetry community has turned both painful and joyful experiences into magnificent work.

As the world still endures the coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. also grieves over increased violence against Asian Americans and a mass shooting in Georgia that left six women of Asian descent dead.

"Let's be clear: Anti-Asian violence and discrimination are not new. But, this racism seems to be heightened," says Kwame Alexander, NPR's resident poet. "And the onus is not on Asian Americans to figure this out. Frankly, it's on white people, it's on the rest of us — individually, systemically, to talk about it, to pay attention to, advocate against it."

"Between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice, Today," by Emily Jungmin Yoon, is a list poem that reflects the coldness of the world and how it wears on us. Yoon is a South Korean-born poet pursuing her Ph.D. in Korean literature at the University of Chicago.

Alexander and Morning Edition's Rachel Martin ask listeners: How do you cope with recent anti-Asian violence and discrimination? Tell us in a list poem.

The National Academies Keck Futures Initiative (NAKFI) is pleased to announce the recipients of three $500,000 NAKFI Challenge awards. A 15-year, $40 million dollar program funded by the W.M. Keck Foundation, NAKFI was initiated in 2003 to break down barriers between fields and to promote interdisciplinary research.
