The COVID-19 pandemic has stretched the planet’s health systems to their limits and tested the measures adopted to alleviate difficulties. Contact tracking or tracing to identify infected people has been one such example. However, contact tracing based on interviews with identified or suspected patients presents known weaknesses from previous pandemics. Turning to digital means in a world where global mobility is the rule was therefore of the essence.

2021 Global food policy report: Transforming food systems after COVID-19: Synopsis [in Chinese]

Poems : new and selected / Ron Rash.

"A collection of haunting lyricism that evokes the beauty and hardship of the rural South, by a revered American master of letters— the award-winning, bestselling author of the novels Serena, Something Rich and Strange, and Above the Waterfall. In this incandescent, profound, and accessible collection, beloved and award-winning poet, novelist, and short-story writer Ron Rash vividly channels the rhythms of life in Appalachia, deftly capturing the panoply of individuals who are its heart and soul— men and women inured to misfortune and hard times yet defined by tremendous fortitude, resilience, and a fierce sense of community. In precise, supple language that swerves from the stark to the luminous, Rash richly describes the splendor of the natural landscape and poignantly renders the lives of those dependent on its bounty— in cotton mills and tobacco fields, farmlands and forests. The haunting memories and shared histories of these people— their rituals and traditions— animate this land, and are celebrated in Rash’s crystalline, intensely imagined verse. With an eye for the surprising and vivid detail, Ron Rash powerfully captures the sorrows and exaltations of this wondrous world he knows intimately. Illuminating and indelible, Poems demonstrates his rich talents and confirms his legacy as a standard-bearer for the literature of the American South." -- Description provided by publisher.

You Don't Belong Here: The Stories Our Systems Tell (and Why We have to Disrupt Them) (November 13, 2024 12:00pm)

Event Begins: Wednesday, November 13, 2024 12:00pm
Location: Rackham 4th Floor Assembly Hall
Organized By: Sessions @ Michigan

You Don't Belong Here: The Stories Our Systems Tell (and Why We Have to Disrupt Them)
There is a widespread story that institutions of higher education value diversity and will actively foster belonging for all in the community. In actuality, though, many members of the higher education community continue to face marginalization and othering within their professional and educational spaces. This session centers around an embodied case study depicting one woman’s reflections on her experiences of higher education that sent a persistent, systemic message that she didn’t belong. Through session activities, participants will consider how these messages manifest and why they continue to occur despite the extensive labor of individuals sincerely committed to advancing equity. Together, they brainstorm possibilities for changes that could increase equity at a systems level. This session is appropriate for faculty, graduate students, and academic leaders.
This session can be offered in a fully virtual, synchronous format (90 minutes) or a fully in-person synchronous format (120 minutes).
**The video performance portion of this session contains strong language. It includes explicit descriptions of racist and classist behaviors and the impact of systemic inequities on individuals and communities.

Meow Money Meow Problems

More than 20 years ago, something unusual happened in the small town of Dixfield, Maine. A lady named Barbara Thorpe had left almost all of her money—$200,000—to benefit the cats of her hometown. When Barbara died in 2002, those cats suddenly got very, very rich. And that is when all the trouble began.

Barbara's gift set off a sprawling legal battle that drew in a crew of crusading cat ladies, and eventually, the town of Dixfield itself. It made national news. But after all these years, no one seemed to know where that money had ended up. Did the Dixfield cat fortune just...vanish?

In this episode, host Jeff Guo travels to Maine to track down the money. To figure out how Barbara's plans went awry. And to understand something about this strange form of economic immortality called a charitable trust.

This episode was produced by Willa Rubin with help from Dave Blanchard. It was engineered by Josh Newell. Sally Helm edited the show and Sierra Juarez checked the facts. Jess Jiang is Planet Money's acting Executive Producer.
