han Lily Cole: Technology as a Drive for Social Change | WIRED 2012 | WIRED By www.wired.com Published On :: Mon, 19 Nov 2012 09:04:52 +0000 Impossible, a platform that encourages people to do things for each other for free, could bring a huge amount of social value, argued founder and former model Lily Cole at Wired 2012. Subscribe to WIRED ►► http://po.st/SubscribeWired Full story: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-10/25/lily-cole-impossible "Technology was never something that I was particularly interested in or would consider myself working in, but I feel inspired by the potential for technology to be the driver for social change," she said. Once Cole had the idea for Impossible, she started to research the gift economy, finding lots of pre-capitalist examples and also examining Wikipedia, whose founder Jimmy Wales has invested in the business. "The amount of stuff that we do for free for each other is bigger than GDP." han Poaching the Poachers: How Kenya is Saving Elephants with Night Vision Tech By www.wired.com Published On :: Wed, 17 Oct 2018 04:09:30 +0000 In the last decade, Africa’s elephant population has declined by around 110,000, primarily due to poaching. The slaughter of African rhinos has also skyrocketed — 1,175 were killed in South Africa in 2015 alone, compared with 13 in 2007. Because poachers operate mostly under the cover of night, this type of crime is hard to tackle. In December 2012, Google awarded WWF a $5 million grant to tackle the poaching crisis through technology, launching the Wildlife Crime Technology Project. They have collaborated with FLIR, a thermal imaging company, to design a new infrared camera capable of detecting human movement at night, and have installed cameras around Kenya's Maasai Mara Conservancy. Since the programme started, local rangers have nabbed over 150 poachers. han Aphantasia: The People Without a Mind's Eye | 'Out of Mind' | Wired UK By www.wired.com Published On :: Wed, 14 Apr 2021 06:02:54 +0000 If you close your eyes and picture an apple, how clear is that apple in your mind? Most people can visualise images in their head instantaneously - this known as the mind's eye. But in 2015, a scientific study shed new light on the relatively unheard-of phenomenon known as aphantasia, a mental blindness where the brain is unable to call images to the mind eye. This short documentary uncovers the root cause of a person's emotional detachment from people and events - and the unexpected advantages that come with it. Alex Wheeler shares the story of how his experiences with aphantasia have affected his life, particularly his grieving process after losing his mum, as he seeks answers from Adam Zeman, Professor of Cognitive and Behavioural Neurology at the University of Exeter Medical School. WIRED also talks to artist and YouTuber Amy Right, better known as @AmyRightMeow, who shares their experiences with aphantasia and how it feeds their creative process.
