Pentagon chief says a six-month temporary budget bill will have devastating effects on the military

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says passage of a six-month temporary spending bill would have widespread and devastating effects on the department and the military. He wrote in a letter Sunday to key members of Congress that passing a continuing resolution that caps spending at 2024 levels, rather than taking action on the proposed 2025 budget will hurt thousands of defense programs, and damage military recruiting just as it is beginning to recover after the COVID-19 pandemic. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has teed up a vote this week on a bill that would keep the federal government funded for six more months.

COMEDY

Julio Torres: Color Theories
If you're keyed into comedy up-and-comers, you're probably already familiar with Julio Torres, the Salvadoran American SNL writer who also appeared in Search Party, Shrill, Los Espookys, and Fantasmas. Torres' A24 feature Problemista featured Tilda Swinton and a side of surreal quirk, following a Salvadoran toy designer whose work visa runs out as he toils as an assistant for an art-world weirdo. I'm a fan of Torres' thoughts on all things millennial—design aesthetics (wavy mirrors, Canva flyers), internship hell, and crushing student loan debt. This comedy set will continue to tap into the zeitgeist. LINDSAY COSTELLO
The Crocodile, Belltown (Nov 11–12)

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson On Handling COVID-19, Racial Justice And More — In His First 6 Months

These crises may be unfolding on a national and international scale, but affect lives in every American city and town. Outside of Atlanta’s national spotlight, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson is working to address these issues head-on.

More Than A Month Since Election Day, Trump, Clinton Teams Can't Let It Go

To glance at some of the political news this week, you'd think it was October. Clinton campaign Chairman John Podesta did Meet the Press over the weekend to talk about Russia hacking the DNC's emails. Hillary Clinton aide Brian Fallon took to Twitter on Tuesday to question the FBI's investigation into Clinton's emails. Donald Trump and Bill Clinton sniped at each other. But it's mid-December. The voters and electors alike have cast their votes. And while millions of Americans are doubtless more than happy to have Election Day well behind them, they can still plan on hearing still more about the election in the coming days or even weeks. There's good reason for some of the continuing concern over the election. The FBI and CIA alike say they are now confident Russia hacked the DNC's emails, that Putin was involved, and it was all in an attempt to influence the election in Trump's favor. That could have very real repercussions. President Obama told NPR's Steve Inskeep that Russia's

Residents Of Alaskan Town Receive Monthly Stipend Not To Move Away During Pandemic

Copyright 2020 KHNS. To see more, visit KHNS . LULU GARCIA-NAVARRO, HOST: Southeast Alaska's economy is getting hammered without cruise ship tourists, who stayed home due to the pandemic. So one tiny town is using its federal relief money to write monthly $1,000 checks to every resident, paying them not to move away. Claire Stremple reports from member station KHNS. CLAIRE STREMPLE, BYLINE: The boardwalk-lined streets of Skagway, Alaska, are usually filled with tourists by midsummer. But this year, the streets are quiet. REBECCA HYLTON: I became unemployed March 13. STREMPLE: Like many people in town, Rebecca Hylton has depended on the tourism industry for decades. She ran marketing for a local brewpub. But no cruises means no business. She couldn't pay her mortgage until she and her 7-year-old son got their first $2,000 from the local government. Then she spent a little money downtown. HYLTON: So right away, we bought some new boots for him, whereas before, I definitely would've
