Assessing racial equity globally is complex, involving policies, cultural attitudes and systemic issues that impact minority communities differently across regions.

The performance of a high-Z photon-counting detector for powder diffraction measurements at high (>50 keV) energies is characterized, and the appropriate corrections are described in order to obtain data of higher quality than have previously been obtained from 2D detectors in these energy ranges.

The mol­ecular structure of the solvated title salt, (C21H25N2)2[Fe2(C14H10S2)4]·2C3H7NO reveals that the anion is situated on a crystallographic inversion center in the triclinic space group Poverline{1}. The title compound crystallizes utilizing a network of weak π-stacking inter­actions of phenyl rings pertaining to the di­thiol­ene unit. Moreover, the acidic imidazolium H atoms [N—C(H)—N] display non-classical hydrogen-bonding inter­actions of the C—H⋯O type to the oxygen atoms of the N,N-dimethyl formamide solvent, and hydrogen atoms on the backbone of imidazolium rings display weak C—H⋯S inter­actions with the di­thiol­ene sulfur atoms.

The structure of the title compound, [RuCl2(C7H10N2)2(C2H6OS)2], has monoclinic (P21/n) symmetry. The Ru—N distances of the coordination compound are influenced by the trans chloride or di­methyl­sulfoxide-κS ligands. The mol­ecular structure exhibits disorder for two of the terminal methyl groups of a dimethyl sulfoxide ligand.

The title compound, [Ni(NCS)2(C6H7N)2]n, was prepared by the reaction of Ni(NCS)2 with 4-methyl­pyridine in water. Its asymmetric unit consists of two crystallographically independent NiII cations, of which one is located on a twofold rotational axis whereas the second occupies a center of inversion, two independent thio­cyanate anions and two independent 4-methyl­pyridine co­ligands in general positions. Each NiII cation is octa­hedrally coordinated by two 4-methyl­pyridine coligands as well as two N- and two S-bonded thio­cyanate anions. One of the cations shows an all-trans, the other a cis–cis–trans configuration. The metal centers are linked by pairs of μ-1,3-bridging thio­cyanate anions into [101] chains. X-ray powder diffraction shows that a pure crystalline phase has been obtained and thermogravimetry coupled to differential thermoanalysis reveals that the title compound loses half of the 4-methyl­pyridine coligands and transforms into Ni(NCS)2(C6H7N). Nearly pure samples of this compound can be obtained by thermal annealing and a Rietveld refinement demonstrated that it is isotypic to its recently reported Cd analog [Neumann et al., (2020). CrystEngComm. 22, 184–194] In its crystal structure, the metal cations are linked by one μ-1,3(N,S)- and one μ-1,3,3(N,S,S)-bridging thio­cyanate anion into single chains that condense via the μ-1,3,3(N,S,S)-bridging anionic ligands into double chains.

The mercury(II) halide complex [1,3-di-tert-butyl-2,4-bis­(tert-butyl­amino)-1,3,2λ5,4λ5-di­aza­diphosphetidine-2,4-diselone-κ2Se,Se']di­iodido­mercury(II) N,N-di­methyl­formamide monosolvate, [HgI2(C16H38N4P2Se2)]·C3H7NO or (1)HgI2, 2, containing cis-[(tBuNH)(Se)P(μ-NtBu)2P(Se)(NHtBu)] (1) was synthesized and structurally characterized. The crystal structure of 2 confirms the chelation of chalcogen donors to HgI2 with a natural bite angle of 112.95 (2)°. The coordination geometry around mercury is distorted tetra­hedral as indicated by the τ4 geometry index parameter (τ4 = 0.90). In the mercury complex, the exocyclic tert-butyl­amido substituents are arranged in an (endo, endo) fashion, whereas in the free ligand (1), the exocyclic substituents are arranged in an (exo, endo) pattern. Compound 2 displays non-classical N—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter­actions with the solvent N,N-di­methyl­formamide. These inter­actions may introduce geometrical distortion and deviation from an ideal geometry. An isostructural HgBr2 analogue containing cis-[(tBuNH)(S)P(μ-NtBu)2P(S)(NHtBu)] was also synthesized and structurally characterized, CIF data for the compound being presented as supporting information.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is pulling ads for the Fox television show "Red Band Society" from nearly 200 buses amid complaints they are racist and offensive to women.

The ads show the ensemble cast's members in front of a wall with graffiti describing their characters.

A denigrating word for a woman is used to describe the show's star, Octavia Spencer's character.

The Los Angeles Times reports transit officials began pulling the ads on Wednesday. They had been up for five weeks.

The Red Band Society also shared the ad on its Facebook page in August.

Protesters who attended Thursday's transit agency board meeting complained the depiction of Spencer's character is racist and offensive to women.

The actress, who plays a nurse in the hospital drama, is black.

Over the years, NPR's poetry community has turned both painful and joyful experiences into magnificent work.

As the world still endures the coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. also grieves over increased violence against Asian Americans and a mass shooting in Georgia that left six women of Asian descent dead.

"Let's be clear: Anti-Asian violence and discrimination are not new. But, this racism seems to be heightened," says Kwame Alexander, NPR's resident poet. "And the onus is not on Asian Americans to figure this out. Frankly, it's on white people, it's on the rest of us — individually, systemically, to talk about it, to pay attention to, advocate against it."

"Between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice, Today," by Emily Jungmin Yoon, is a list poem that reflects the coldness of the world and how it wears on us. Yoon is a South Korean-born poet pursuing her Ph.D. in Korean literature at the University of Chicago.

Alexander and Morning Edition's Rachel Martin ask listeners: How do you cope with recent anti-Asian violence and discrimination? Tell us in a list poem.

A Minnesota judge sentenced former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to 22 1/2 years in prison Friday for the murder of George Floyd.

Judge Peter Cahill wrote that part of the mission of the Minneapolis Police Department is to give citizens "voice and respect."

"Mr. Chauvin, rather than pursuing the MPD mission, treated Mr. Floyd without respect and denied him the dignity owed to all human beings and which he certainly would have extended to a friend or neighbor. In the Court's view, 270 months, which amounts to an additional ten years over the presumptive 150-month sentence, is the appropriate sentence."

Chauvin, 45, was convicted in April of all three charges he faced — second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

He was sentenced only on the first of the charges, the most serious, as is typical in Minnesota.

Cahill said Chauvin's crime included four aggravating factors: that Derek Chauvin abused a position of trust and authority as a police officer, that he treated Floyd with "particular cruelty," that he committed the crime as part of a group with at least three other people, and that children were present during the commission of the offense.
