ted Textifi: How to OCR Hard Copy Printed Material Even in Airplane Mode By www.inclusiveandroid.com Published On :: Tue, 22 May 2018 17:27:16 +0000 Textifi by Virtual Eye is a simple OCR app that doesn't require a data or wi-fi connection. The Play Store link is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=textifi.virtualeye.iohl=en_US the interface is straight-forward. In the top right corner is a button for turning on the flashlight/torch, and across the bottom are buttons for detecting text, copying text to the clipboard, and reading the text out loud again. There is no menu icon, and there don’t seem to be any app settings. To use Textifi, do the following: • Turn on the flashlight (if necessary). • Center your phone's viewfinder over the printed page. • Tap the Detect Text button. Recognition is fairly quick. If nothing happens after a second or two, tap the screen again. Once text is recognized, it is read automatically. If you want it to be repeated, tap the Speak Again button, and if you want to save it, tap the Copy button, then use TalkBack's editing menu to paste the text into a notepad app. This app’s OCR results are great, but the key is to position your camera right. I was sitting in my office at school going through junk mail. If I positioned the camera by putting my elbow on the table next to the printed page and holding my hand up in the air, results were very good, almost as good as the Eye-D app by GingerMind Technologies. With Eye-D, recognition was pretty good even if I didn’t keep the camera level; with Textifi, recognition was great if I held the camera right, but results were bad if I wasn’t careful. ted Social Media Fail of the Day: ISIS Creates Social Network ‘Khelafabook,’ Anonymous Reportedly Takes It Offline By cheezburger.com Published On :: Tue, 10 Mar 2015 12:00:00 -0700 Between threats from Anonymous and a new crackdown from Twitter, ISIS is having a tough time reaching out and recruiting new psychopaths online. To circumvent the censorship, the Islamic militant group has reportedly created its own social network called “Khelafabook.” The Facebook clone claims it is independent and not actually sponsored by ISIS (even though it has ISIS logos all over its homepage). It says its goal is to show the world that they don’t only “live in caves” and “carry guns,” and they vow to “will rule the world by Allah’s permission.” Khelafabook was set up by a man in Mosul, Iraq, according to The Independent, and is hosted in Egypt. There’s also an associated Twitter account which is linked to from the site. The site first popped up last week, but has already been taken offline “to protect the info and details of its members,” according to a message on the page. After it was taken down, Twitter accounts associated with Anonymous appeared to claim responsibility, as Vocativ points out. For the the time being they’ll have to look elsewhere to share their terrorist pancake recipes. Full Article anonymous hacked social media isis

ted 'Did they think they were gonna make money from their wedding?': Newlyweds "devastated" after only gaining $3k from wedding instead of the $10k they expected By cheezburger.com Published On :: Wed, 13 Nov 2024 08:00:00 -0800 This newly-married couple is going to be in a world of debt after throwing a lavish wedding that didn't exactly pay off. Weddings these days are a bit different than they were 50 years ago. Besides the obvious changes in decorum and decoration, there's a whole new tradition around gift-giving. Many couples choose to live together before marriage these days, which can be quite beneficial. You can learn if you are compatible with someone before legally declaring it forever. However, if you live with someone for a few years before marriage, you'll have to buy everything for your house in the meantime. In the past, couples were just starting out, and would move in together after marrying. Their gifts would often include cookware, baby items, furniture, or other presents designed to start a new couple off in their home. Nowadays, you may as well give the newlyweds some cash. They probably have a lot of furniture and pots and pans already. But they might be going severely into debt to pull off their dream wedding, just like the couple here. It's an eye-opening read, as shared by @kaylajohnsonatl. Commenters debated the state of gift-giving these days–check it all out below. After that, this interviewer lamented that "[It] is just really tacky" after noticing that a job candidate did something that gave him pause. ted Cheap Fix Floated For Plane Vapor's Climate Damage By science.slashdot.org Published On :: 2024-11-13T17:20:00+00:00 AmiMoJo writes: The climate-damaging vapors left behind by jet planes could be easily tackled, aviation experts say, with a new study suggesting they could be eliminated for a few pounds per flight. Jet condensation trails, or contrails, have spawned wild conspiracy theories alleging mind control and the spreading of disease, but scientists say the real problem is their warming effect. "They create an artificial layer of clouds, which traps the heat from the Earth that's trying to escape to outer space," said Carlos Lopez de la Osa, from the Transport & Environment campaign group, which has carried out a new study on the solutions to contrails. "The scale of the warming that's associated with them is roughly having a similar impact to that of aviation carbon emissions." Tweaking the flight paths of a handful of aircraft could reduce contrail warming by more than half by 2040, at a cost of less than $5.1 per flight. Geography and a flight's latitude have a strong influence on whether a contrail is warming. Time of day also influences the climate effects of contrails. Those formed by evening and night flights have the largest warming contribution. Seasonality is also important -- the most warming contrails tend to occur in winter. "Planes are already flying around thunderstorms and turbulence areas," Mr Lopez de la Osa said. "We will need to add one more constraint to flight planning, which is avoiding areas of contrail formation." Read more of this story at Slashdot. Full Article

ted Assisted dying bill: Two doctors would need to approve action By www.bmj.com Published On :: 2024-11-12T04:31:17-08:00 Terminally ill adults in England and Wales who are expected to die within six months would be able to get help to end their lives if their applications were approved by two doctors and a High Court judge, under proposed new legislation.1Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, who proposed the bill, said it provided the “strictest safeguards anywhere in the world.” The law would apply only to people who have full mental capacity and are terminally ill. Mental illness and disability are both excluded as eligibility criteria, and a person would need to declare twice in writing that they wanted to be helped to die.A person who wished to end their life would have to administer the medication themselves. It will remain illegal for a doctor or anybody else to end a person’s life. No doctor will be obliged to participate in any part of the process. The bill would also make it... Full Article
ted Behavioral and Neural Mechanisms of Face-Specific Attention during Goal-Directed Visual Search By www.jneurosci.org Published On :: 2024-11-13T09:30:19-08:00 Goal-directed visual attention is a fundamental cognitive process that enables animals to selectively focus on specific regions of the visual field while filtering out irrelevant information. However, given the domain specificity of social behaviors, it remains unclear whether attention to faces versus nonfaces recruits different neurocognitive processes. In this study, we simultaneously recorded activity from temporal and frontal nodes of the attention network while macaques performed a goal-directed visual search task. V4 and inferotemporal (IT) visual category-selective units, selected during cue presentation, discriminated fixations on targets and distractors during the search but were differentially engaged by face and house targets. V4 and IT category-selective units also encoded fixation transitions and search dynamics. Compared with distractors, fixations on targets reduced spike–LFP coherence within the temporal cortex. Importantly, target-induced desynchronization between the temporal and prefrontal cortices was only evident for face targets, suggesting that attention to faces differentially engaged the prefrontal cortex. We further revealed bidirectional theta influence between the temporal and prefrontal cortices using Granger causality, which was again disproportionate for faces. Finally, we showed that the search became more efficient with increasing target-induced desynchronization. Together, our results suggest domain specificity for attending to faces and an intricate interplay between visual attention and social processing neural networks. Full Article

ted Eight PTI men ‘exonerated’ in Lahore corps commander house attack case By www.dawn.com Published On :: Wed, 13 Nov 2024 15:49:42 +0500 • Govt objects to repeal of prison rules for PTI founder • Imran booked in 54 cases across Punjab, LHC told LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday disposed of pre-arrest bail petitions of eight PTI activists in the case regarding an attack on the Lahore corps commander’s residence after police declared them innocent in the investigation. ATC-I Judge Manzer Ali Gill was hearing the bail petitions of 32 activists when a prosecutor stated that a joint investigation team (JIT), formed to probe the May 9 incidents, had exonerated eight of the petitioners for lack of evidence. At this, the lawyer for the activists sought the court permission to withdraw their bail petitions. The judge adjourned the bail petitions of other activists till Dec 11 and 13, asking them to join the JIT investigation. The judge allowed the request and disposed of the petitions of Tanzila Imran, Rizwana Ghazanfar, Makiya Saeed, Shahbaz Amir Ali, Farooq Ahmad, Usman Naveed, Zirk Khan and Mian Ahmad Rehman. Sarwar Road police of Lahore had registered a case against PTI leaders and workers for attacking the Lahore corps commander house, also known as Jinnah House, on May 9 last year. Separately, ATC-III Judge Arshad Javed adjourned the hearing of post-arrest bail petitions by the PTI leaders, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Rashid and Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, in May 9 cases. The judge directed the petitioners’ lawyers to conclude their arguments on the next hearing; otherwise, the petitions would be decided on the basis of police record. The judge postponed the pleas of Rasheed till Nov 12, Dr Yasmin till Nov 13 & 16, and Qureshi till Nov 19. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz, issued a notice to Advocate Sher Afzal Marwat on whose petition the section was set aside, seeking his response. Prison rules Meanwhile, a two-member division bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) took up the petition of the chief commissioner Islamabad against setting aside of Section 265 of the Punjab Prison Rules that prohibits political discussion during prisoner meetings with visitors. The plea contested Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan’s verdict, which had struck down Section 265. Advocate General Islamabad Ayaz Shaukat argued that the IHC lacked jurisdiction to intervene in Punjab’s laws and maintained that the single bench did not have the authority to nullify provisions in the Punjab Prison Rules. Chief Justice Farooq asked, “So, you are saying that the Islamabad High Court cannot interfere in any provincial law?” Justice Imtiaz noted that the Punjab Prison Rules are also applicable to prisoners in Islamabad, suggesting an overlap in jurisdiction. The CJ inquired whether a formal notice under Section 27A was issued to the attorney general or the advocate general by the single bench, a requirement before declaring any law invalid. While the advocate general said he had been summoned, he acknowledged that a formal notice was not issued. Advocate General Shaukat requested the immediate suspension of the single bench’s decision, but Chief Justice Farooq scheduled a formal hearing for the next week. Justice Farooq Haider was hearing a petition filed by Imran’s sister, Noreen Niazi, challenging the non-disclosure of the cases’ details against her brother. Cases against Imran Also on Tuesday, Punjab Police told the Lahore High Court that 54 criminal cases, including those related to May 9, had been registered against PTI founding chairman Imran Khan in different cities of the province. An additional advocate general presented a report on behalf of the inspector general of police, revealing that 21 cases were registered in Lahore, 19 in Rawalpindi, seven in Sheikhupura, five in Faisalabad and one each in Gujranwala and Mianwali. The cases include attacks on the Jinnah House, Askari Tower at Liberty Roundabout, General Headquarters in Rawalpindi and office of an intelligence agency in Faisalabad. A law officer for the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sought additional time to provide details of the cases, if any, against Imran Khan. The judge allowed the request and adjourned further hearing till Nov 20. Published in Dawn, November 13th, 2024 Full Article Pakistan
